Our First Ramadan Bazaar in Sibu, Sarawak 🇲🇾 | East Malaysia Vlog 2023

  • First time at a Ramadan Bazaar here in East Malaysia, how different is it to your local bazaar? Is it cheaper than Kuala Lumpur?
Little bit of a brief interval on our trip as we bring forth a Ramadan Bazaar that we ventured out to in Sibu Sarawak - plenty of traditional foods you may not see on mainland Western Malaysia, maybe it's a little different to the obvious choices in Kampung Bahru.
Every one is getting into the spirit ahead of Hari Raya as the Ramadan Bazaar's open (for Westerners it's like a Christmas market) so we've released this early - plenty of amazing food - we get to eat some old favourites to.
Including one of our old favourites. The last time we were in Malaysia it was a very different Raya and these markets were not really running, so we're glad we're back to be able to do this properly!
Plenty more to come on the East Coast and Kuching.

16:50 once the lady knew you were about to eat the gulai nangka with lemang, she reopened the pack and adding more gravy so you will have enough to dip with. How lovely!

Goodness gracious! Giulia is quick! I was just about correcting the same thing in my mind "it's -di/dekat Sibu instead of dalam Sibu" and there she was,.. expressing my thoughts ha ha ha ! Take care guys! You did a great job! And by the way it's totally fine to eat in front of us.. at least to me. I don't mind at all. We do understand and respect non-muslims as well it's your right anyway.

Doing the whole Malaysia tour series...ehh.. "If you were vegetarian, this would be food paradise" ....I can relate to that statement.. Yup , Lemang , i can see why you were ecstatic when i passed by the ALL Lemang stall at the Bazaar in JB... LOL .... I like the improvisation... Mix and match your food..... the next level of foodie.... Yup, prices are definitely cheaper than JB... one murtabak here is already double the price.... If there ain't Roti Canai on Veggie On Tour, I ain't watching it.... LOL ...Not everyday you see Orang Puteh walking around a Ramadan Bazaar....Some of the food prices are really value for money. Really killing that Lemang at the end of the vlog....
Sarawak Food Experience - Level UP!!! 👍👍👍

Very difficult to find malay savoury food suitable for vegetarian/vegan. Even the vegetable based gulai will have something like shrimp paste or dried shrimp/anchovies/fish in the gravy. For the dipping sauce like the sweet soy sauce can have shrimp paste in it.

Happy to see you both finally making your way to Sarawak. Sibu is not as big as Kuching and has a different vibe to it.
3:30 Don't worry about eating in front of people. I've never heard anyone offended in Sarawak about such matter. For us, you do you. The attitude is that if you can eat, you eat. If I can't eat, don't eat. Respect goes both ways.
There are interesting vege nasi goreng in Sarawak you can't find in the peninsula but I'm not sure how common is it sold in shops - nasi goreng dabai (a fruit that resembles the olive) and nasi goreng bandung/daun ubi. At times, they also have anchovies in them...
13:39 The stall operators were shouting "besai, besai!" which means "big, big!" referring to the big plastic cups.
18:45 "Gula apong" is palm sugar made from the sap of the "apong" palm. It is akin to the gula melaka but it has a more burnt or caramel taste to it.
