  • Tesla’s controversial turn signals without the traditional steering wheel stalk are going to make the automaker lose its near-perfect safety rating in Europe.
    Over the last few years, Tesla has built an impressive collection of top safety ratings from safety organizations all around the world.
    We previously reported on the Model Y acing its safety test with NHTSA and achieving the highest possible IIHS safety rating.
    The electric vehicle also got the top safety score from Euro NCAP and Australia’s ANCAP.
    But now Euro NCAP has warned Tesla that it is at risk of not getting its top safety score anymore because of its turn signals.

    Since when is a button not a physical control lmao?

      It’s ok some old dogs just can’t learn new tricks. Even if they’re simple🤷‍♂️ one less part to worry about says Tesla. No wonder they’re the number one company in the world, oh wait that’s bc of their AI that’s coming soon😉

    Tesla uses physical controls for turn indicators using force buttons instead of traditional stalks. I don't think it violates the new guideline.

      Ncap is already issuing warning to that effect, they may come hard on Tesla.

    People are very intuitive and will get used to the change. It took me a minute to get used to the features in my 2017 Model S, but they are now a part of me.

    I am in Australia, and I test drove the latest model 3 last week without reading or watching anything about it prior and my very first concerning feedback to the dealer was the stalk-less indicator. In some state, the law requires us to indicate when exiting a round-about and I found myself to always having to look down at the steering wheel which can be a safety concern. The gear on the touch screen is a bit of an issue as well, for me it wasn't too bad, but I know people with dry skin on their finger might find it difficult. Just my honest opinion.

      Pretty sure a lot of reviewers said the same about roundabout exits. Its hard to reach the turn signal and confusing because the wheel is upside down during a turn. It wouldnt be an issue if it was a steer by wire system, where the wheel doesnt need to be turned all the way like it does in a regular steering column.

      Thanks for your honest opinion, driving for the first time with a stalk-less indicator can be concerning and needs some getting use to.

    I've had mine for a few days. You quickly adapt to the new turn signal layout, and, as others have commented, a pushbutton on the steering wheel is not a touchscreen control.

    I think Tesla will come up with an "auto signal blinker" that comes on when the wheels crosses the dotted lines, then you dont even need to click it with your fingers lol

      I don't know how that works in US but in Europe the rule is that you need to signal before making the maneuvre because you need to signal the intention, so others can see and react accordingly. What you say doesn't make sense.

    • @aurora_occidentalis2248
      @aurora_occidentalis2248 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bencze465Exactly - that's too late. The signal _does_ go off automatically when you're in the adjacent lane or complete the turn which is a small but very nice feature.

    • @TOMMYBOY6969
      @TOMMYBOY6969 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bencze465 Since Tesla already have the blinkers turn off after a lane change, it would not be hard to make it turn on as the tires goes very near or touch the dotted line. One can just go very near the dotted line but not cross it right away thus turning on the blinkers, then when it is clear, then you make the lane change slowly. I dont know if they would do it, i am just guessing ?

    Those are an essential safety features. If you can't easily and reliably signal without looking around in your car you're a danger to other traffic participants. Obviously you don't need to be an "auto safety expert" just a driver to realize it's not really possible to find turn signals when the steering wheel is not in neutral position without looking at it and finding it with your eyes. This coincides with a situation where you're turning the steering wheel so in middle of a maneuver, which requires you to watch what happens outside the car, obviously (wanting to pull over or signal another turn while already in a turn, exiting roundabout, parking lot / garage maneuvers etc).
    I also agree with the new policy, nowadays we need to look at the screen for things that you need to do while driving because of the lack of tactile physical controls (like AC for some cars). For things you routinely need to use while driving controls should be easy to find without looking. No, voice control doesn't work because majority of the world has a native language that is not english (or the couple languages your car may speak) - not to mention voice control is just pretty shit in literally everything I seen so far, like siri, google assistant, alexa etc.
    It's bad enough that I can't make a call or plot a route using voice control, ok those are tough, but there's no valid reason to remove essential controls other than saving a dollar or so.

    I see a problem in Europe with the absence of turn signal stalks, in particular when driving through a roundabout. In the US you don't have many of those, whilst in Europe roundabouts are very frequent. While driving through one of those, with the stalks removed, your attention will be severely distracted trying to find the turn signal buttons on the turning steering wheel while negotiating a multi-lane roundabout trying to get to say the third exit.

      Not really. I've gone thru several today (in the US) and was not distracted. You quickly adapt and develop new muscle memory.
      It's bit like adapting to one pedal driving.

    Really don't see how having to push a button to signal is any easier than a knob within finger-swiping distance of your hand on the wheel. Seems honestly less intuitive considering you might push the wrong one, at least with the knob you know you signalled correctly if you pushed it in the direction you're about to turn your wheel.
    But then again, plenty of drivers in Texas don't signal to begin with so I guess this wouldn't be a concern.

    More buttons and knobs and stalks makes cars safer, what? How is a small button and small knob better than a screen where you can adjust the size, font colour, etc. With screens, you can also better include automatic blinker controls when cars cross over lines or the camera detects a roundabout. hhhmmm could this be - if we can't keep up with the market leader, lets punish their innovation. If buttons and knobs and big stalks are safer why don't we go back the 60s where cars had big knobs and big physical buttons and big stalks - those cars must have been really safe?

    Terrible path that they are taking, and the ONLY reason they are heading to that direction is because they can profit even more off of not using buttons. I love teslas but the path they are taking for turn signals, gear select, and many button dependent stuff is not it.

    Good job European Regulators. Making progress impossible, increasing prices of products and making safety ratings about touchscreens instead of actual safety.
    This is why most innovative businesses start in the US. Startup like Tesla will never exist in Europe.
