The Tromp Family Disappearance... and Reappearance

- In 2016, an Australian family inexplicably left their home, leaving everything except a pile of cash behind. Eventually, they were all found one by one but the reason they decided to run away remains unknown...

I think its pretty simple- one person had a psychotic episode, and were so frightened that this initially convinced the family that they were in real danger.
not "one person" it was mark, and only mark.
@@audrei679 That is one person?

So the daughter being found in a catatonic state is just an inconvenient truth?
Mold actually CAN make people hallucinate. It could very well be possible that the family members had been exposed to it for a long time and came to their senses after they left the house.
they did say they were in the process of renovating which could have exposed them especially since theyre on a farm
I wondered about mold too. Or a chemical used on renovation or on the farm.
That’s a smart out of the box explanation!
There's a movie called 'mold'
My first thought was something like carbon monoxide or some other accidental poisoning
He leaves because he fears people are coming after him thus triggering a national manhunt.
ikr? oh the irony
lmao thats actually CRAZY funny
Hahahaha yeah didn't look at it like that! 😂
I think it started out as 'group psychosis' only in that the father was able to convince the family that he was in some kind of danger and they needed to leave immediately. They bought in at first but as things progressed they began to peel off one by one as they began to realize dad was completely delusional. I can't explain the fugue and catatonic states of the mother and daughter, but I can't think of anything else that would result in those states either.
Could be a reaction from a farm product. Food gases, etc.
I genuinely think it's as simple as this. When an intelligent and trusted person in your life becomes paranoid, at first it can be very easy to buy into. It starts out small and understandable before it progresses into more recognizable psychosis. The catatonic state may be explained by simple shock/trauma. These people were in a state of fear, confusion and actual danger for several days. Their sense of reality had been warped. They suddenly had to escape some unknown enemy but then they had to escape the escape and their own family members. It sounds like an extremely confusing and stressful experience. My brain would probably just turn itself off too.
The catatonic state can be explained by them being in shock/tarumatised. Of course they would be, they were all a normal family before this went down, I think they were struggling to process everything that just happened.
honestly, sometimes shock and confusion can have you near catatonic too
Group psychosis is one of the lazier diagnoses I've ever heard of. It's the term investigators throw at cases when they feel like the investigation has gone on too long and it's getting too costly. Just look at the case of Gloria Ramirez. There was a pile of physical evidence, and the investigators said "uhhhhh no doctors or hospitals were at fault, don't sue us, it's just women being hysterical again, those crazy dames" and to this day, that's the accepted explanation.
Isolation, loneliness, exhaustion (from working the farm and rehabbing the house) can mess with your mind. Dad may have been delusional but the kids might have thought they were just going for a ride in the car when dad suddenly became very weird and they didn't know how to respond. I hope after rest and everything else the family are now back home and doing well.
Their house was also found by the police as if it was ransacked. that means that the kids knew something was wrong. i think the dad went insane, and dragged his family to come with them immediately.
Remember the “kids” are adults.
I’m sorry for how rude this sounds, but there’s no nicer way to state this fact. Almost everything about your comment is embarrassingly incompetent, and literally anyone with an IQ over 90 would hysterically laugh in your face if you told them this theory
The way sister looked at brother during the interview looks like she was signalling "are you seriously telling them ?" They definitely are hiding truth
I caught that too. Very interesting
What truth? Maybe they're just embarrassed of their episode. They're not hurt and they didn't hurt anyone so they owe us nothing. They can keep their reasons, that's non of your business.
@@ughlwtmechangerhisthabks8349 it being none of our business isn't mutually exclusive with hiding something
this is the type of thinking that ive never liked, i just go with the most likely option. they went insane for a bit.
@@shotnothing3419 again, what does it matter if they're not hurt and no one else is? Let the people be. Just because you're curious and they refuse to please your craving for gossip that means they're "hiding something"? I mean yeah, everyone is hiding their private matters from the rest of the world if that's what you mean. I bet you're hiding an awful lot from me right now.
I completely accept the shared psychosis explanation. Not only is it a proven phenomenon, there are also some suggestions that there might be a genetic predisposition to such a thing, so having it happen in a family isn't so surprising. In historical examples there was also far less genetic diversity among rural communities in which these things happened, so that also supports the possibility that there's a potential genetic link. I'm glad they're all safe and I hope they're doing well. It's nothing to be ashamed about, mental health is an important topic that all should be free to discuss without stigma. Sharing personal experiences also helps us to learn, and makes it far easier to deal with.
Madness in the Fast Lane, documentary about two Swedish twins with folie au deux - shared madness absolutely brutal documentary
They are not supposed to say psychosis is reporting murders.
I know we have history on it but I don’t get how it’s possible!! I would think my family member is sick I wouldn’t buy into their delusion.
The case youre referring to was my first introduction to the phenomena about a decade and some change ago and it kinda freaked me out. But I remember being absolutely heartbroken when I learned how it ended. Over the years I stumbled across many more instances of entire families, siblings and friends sharing the same psychosis to the same degree. Just a really bizarre thing to read about but the human brain is one extremely powerful machine.
unlikely all at the same time though
3:26 For those with neurological conditions such as epilepsy, there are flashing lights at this time stamp.
I can tell you work hard on your videos and it really shows. Really enjoy watching your content! This is basically the modern-day "unsolved mystery" legit cinematic experience.
Delusion and psychosis seems terrifying, it must feel horrific to be so scared or feel so out of control that you push yourself to do dangerous and irrational things.
If they were doing home renovations they could have had a long term exposure to some kind of toxin... likely from older materials that were being torn out. Chemicals and toxins over time can really affect the brain in bizarre ways. Neurotoxicity can absolutely cause memory issues as well as behavioural issues.
I think it could very well be something like this as well. From the home renovation or the farm work.
I hope they are doing well today.
Yes! That’s what I was thinking too. During the home renovations, they could have been exposed to many different toxins that could have caused varying degrees of mental instability, depending upon degree of exposure. Lead from old paint, and mold comes to mind…
There is something awful about having a psychotic paranoid episode - and it becoming a media spectacle.
yeah. I'm curious about what happened but also it's not my right to know. It's okay that they don't want to explain everything. My brother has had delusion episodes very similar to this (he's in a mental hospital/rehab right now for the next three months) and I know he wouldn't want it becoming a huge spectacle, and I'm sure it would worsen his symptoms and make him withdraw and stop telling others about it, making it really hard to get help. It's hypocritical of me to say this I'm sure as I just watched this video about them, but I wish them peace and to be left alone.
So nice that you're back to making videos. Have watched all of your investigations numerous times together with my friends and it's always a joy when anything new comes out. Keep up the good work!
I adore your content. I cannot elaborate how grateful I am to have found a channel that covers strange incidents with a calming voice! Finally man
I know right
Perhaps this is just what happens in regional/rural Australia. Our town had a recent case of a mother collaborating with her son to murder her other son with special needs, but when they were caught they were assessed to be of sound mind and it seems to have been a moment of psychosis that led them to murder the child. It really shook the community because we'd seen them around and she seemed like a very loving and kind mother to the child she murdered.
OMG that's awful! And it sounds demonic af. Sounds like something weird is happening in that place. 😭
Can you really blame the mother? She’s also a victim
@@JaKingScomezhow is she the victim?
@@BigFreem nobody asks for a child like that and society judges mothers with children like that. She was stuck living with it and she couldn’t just put the kid up for adoption. She had no chances.
yeah probably something generational. you know, something stained in the bloodline if they’re from rural australia
Is it possible that they were exposed to Ergot Fungus, being farmers and workaholics they could have been exposed to the fungus in different degrees leading to different levels of delusions and why some members came to sooner than others.
Isn't that why witch hunts started? Ergot in the rye caused weird behaviour.
@@edwright480 something like that!
I saw this on an episode on the tv show McLeod's Daughters once. They were all hallucinating after eating infected bread.
Interesting hypothesis
Thats a great hypothesis! I thought perhaps some kind of long term exposure to a toxin (possibly mold) or chemical from doing home renovations. Neurotoxicity can also cause memory and behavioural issues.
Australians are so chill, they'll just find someone stuffed into the trunk of their car and just ask them if they're fine without freaking out
This is a heck of a story. Maybe the family is not sure themselves what happened.
Having experienced a close family member experience psychosis, i think the shared psychosis is a very strong theory. If me and this family member hadn't had issues in the past i could easily see myself getting swept up in it with her; it is very surreal to experience psychosis yourself and to see someone else struggle with it.
I witnessed this with my mom many times. The stress on a person being in that environment is understated. People can be very vulnerable in those situations, so I see this as a valid hypothesis.
Heyy you wanna be friends ??

I actually agree with people here - I think one of them (the father) had an actual acute psychosis and "convinced" them to follow him. I think people don't realize that not everyone can just NOT believe their family member - especially if you are very close one
exactly, especially if it's a parent. As someone whose mother has manic episodes and frequently is telling me that we are in danger and unsafe I can assure that its very hard to say no and not believe her, especially with the amount of conviction that people in that mental state have.
Then why would they steal a car after splitting up.... why didn't they call the cops right away when they still knew the location? They were all on drugs.
@@auds25definitely makes sense. I've had similar experiences with my family (especially because one of my brothers had some drug related struggles, that feasibly could put him in the dangerous situations he was convinced we were in) and I'm wishing you all the best. you are strong but it's okay to feel weak.
Especially, typically, a father.
That does not explain the disorientation of 4 family members. Something else occurred.
i've seen paranoid schizophrenia up close and personal, it's very complicated, and a psychotic break can happen to anyone if they are driven to it / cornered
full recovery is possible as long as the triggers are gone
Yes there is at least one book on transient psychosis. The one I know about is about 40 years old.
I think the year of this is telling. This is the beginning of when a lot of theories were coming out regarding world events. I think the father was watching too much of that content, and convinced the rest of the family they were in danger.
Glad they’re all safe now. Hope they can heal together.
yahhhhh mainstream groupthinkers think the End is Nigh! lol if only they could turn their dumb TV's off and go outside they'd see the sun still shining, grass still growing, birds still chirpin :D

How can i support you? You Guys really deserve it.
A substance of some sort was shared between them some how or some way. Maybe slowly, but one way or another. Be interesting to know if hair follicle test and/or toenails were tested for long term exposure to some fungus, bacteria, toxin, etc.
Good point Big Daddy
Yes. I'm thinking a chemical from farming.
I think they were doing substances
Just saw some videos about this type of thing being studied and perfected for Bio war fare
The kids can't explain what motivated them to go on this strange trip? The idea of a shared psychosis might have something to it.
Those two look extremely disheveled and in a lot of distress, something really weird seems that is going on with them
5:40 - The most probable means of transport is train, the Melbourne - Sydney line passes through both Wangaratta and Yass and is quite cheap ($30AUDish) running twice a day
i came back to this channel after a long time and its my new fave channel
So they didn’t test the water or food or medication? One dude drink one cup of water and decided it was cool? The neighbors didn’t go crazy but the pipes on their land could be damage but nobody wanted to check that? What!?!
If no one else on the same water supply experienced anything like this theres not necessarily a reason to check it. Other people WOULD have experienced symptoms, not just one specific family.
@@justoverit
Not necessarily. That family could have had great exposure or some other even that triggered a reaction.
Shared psycosis is very common - especially in well knit families. Remember the BURARI DEATH CASE in India?
yeah, that was nuts! men need to get therapy, patriarchy is stupid, the man who was forced to take on the family was seriously overwhelmed = killed them all rather than admit he wasn't coping
Oh yes. That was awful
Not convinced it was share psychosis. I would assume some natural reaction to something.

I was thinking something about poisoning. Remember they have a family farm. Could be some kind of chemical reaction????
Pesticides or the fertilizer ?
Maybe he heard someone say “Get Trump” and he thought they said “Get Tromp” and got scared…
Good one.lol
Whenever something odd like this happens that seems unexplainable, I try to find the thing the effected party is leaving out. I think that either the dad was in an altercation with someone he felt was threatening his life, or the dad had a bout of psychosis and the family feels embarrassed about it. This whole "uhhhh we all went nuts and started driving but we're better now, no need to look further into it" thing doesn't sound even a little bit true. Maybe I'd believe that if it had ever happened to anyone else, but I've never heard of it before or since.
The most obvious detail imo is the girls stealing the car. The story glossed over like that's normal in Australia or something. Well one thing that is normal there is hard drugs and one thing that is normal on hard drugs is breaking in to a hotel, and stealing cars. And if the girls were doing that away from the parents... it's pretty obvious they were exhibiting the same behavior... and they never contacted police as they were splitting up.... I mean it's so obvious it's drugs lol.
It's kind of like that movie, Bug with Ashley Judd, where this random man had her convinced that her motel room was covered in microscopic bugs listening to them and watching their every move.

I’ve actually experienced this. I have bipolar I and my ex husband does too. When him and I were together, we would commonly trigger each other into psychosis (manic episodes).
Psychosis and mania aren't the same thing
@@RepentImmediately sorry to inform but you are incorrect. Here is one example online “Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that features extreme shifts in mood, during which psychosis can occur. “
@@RepentImmediately I think it’s funny that you thought you could tell me about a mood disorder that I actually have where I have experienced psychosis myself.
@@RepentImmediatelyMania falls within the psychosis spectrum.
Oddly enough, you can be delusional without being psychotic.
Delusional disorder is marked by strong false beliefs and delusions, while maintaining a grip on reality. These false beliefs are so strong, that they generate false memories. Some examples are someone who believes they were abducted by aliens, or a cult leader who believes they are the world’s savior. Psychosis is cyclical in nature, sometimes delusions can linger, but it’s very rare for the human mind to maintain a state of psychosis for an tended period of time. People with delusional disorder don’t necessarily experience a psychotic break. The beliefs and false memories persist for an indefinite period of time
i love your channel!!

A relatively mild form of bipolar disorder is exhibited by the description of workaholic. This is a mild form of mania that is sustainable and they are able to work cheerfully when others are ready to call it a day. It is unlike the episodic type of full blown mania. Bipolar disorder often runs in families for example in the case of the novelist Charles Dickens and the painter Van Gogh. Its also well known that bipolar people ate attracted to others with bipolar disorder. Therefore it's entirely likely that the both parents and one of the siblings began cycling into a more severe type of mania caused by the father or mother which led to all of the family leaving together but soon the two siblings figured out that the others were suffering a shared psychosis, possibly with arguments ensuing causing the two not supporting the shared delusion to split off from the others. The son confirmed that the father was in a bad way so I'm guessing his psychosis was the trigger for the other two and because he was also a dominant member of the group the mother and daughter just shut down because of the stress.
As for the (obvious) water theory - it could take months for certain toxins to build up and cause paranoia, so a police officer drinking it once doesn't discount that. And the substance could either be leaching into the pipes of just their home or even inside the pipes, so only one home could be affected. I'm thinking of the many supply lines that run from public water supplies to homes that are made of lead in the US as an example.
Bed bugs can cause paranoia. I saw it happen to my roommates. I never got bit myself, but they seemed really really paranoid during that time.
Psychosis, ...what? The way the kids act in those interviews, the family is obviously hiding some criminal dealings.
Thank you for this. The first video that popped up for this case was the buzzfeed 'Unsolved' and I can not stand their awful attempts at humorous riffs, it was infuriating to try to watch.

i cant stand this persons monotone voice, why cant there be one documentary youtuber who just talks normally.
Self fulfilling prophecy-People are following us-leave inexplicably leaving other people worried, issue gets reporting-people literally are following them-to make sure they are okay.
This phenomenon happens fairly often: people with delusions about being targeted by authorities act in ways that force authorities to interact with them, often with escalatory consequences.
Why is nobody considering that one of the parents did something very illegal and convinced the rest that they had to flee, which is why no one wanted to reveal a single detail about what was happening as they got found one by one. So weird to see everyone talking about fungus, contaminated water, etc.
maybe they cook some wild mushroom soup for dinner that triggers their mental episodes... that's the most likely explanation i can think of, given they are farmers...
Ok but why did Riana have no memory... im so confused
In his defense. EVERYONE was after him at a certain point there lmao
It’s not unreasonable to think that the family was involved in something serious like a murder and they suspected the authorities were on to them 🤷🏻♂️

Hey how come your Kris and Lisanne video is private?
saw this name in annunsolved mysteries thread and your vid answered all my questions thx
Renovations? Perhaps high levels of paint/toxic fume inhalation. Someone in the comments also suggested mold. Perhaps during renovations they may have messed with black mold.
Definitely a fungus that grew throughout their farms, their father being the most exposed, thus; his delusions lasting the longest and strongest. The added stress of their daily lives combined with the fungus made their mental state fragile and malleable. That led the fathers delusions to be easily transferred amongst the family. The whole “not speaking about it” is definitely the parents way of saving themselves embarrassment. They couldn’t balance family, renovations, and farming which potentially allowed the fungus to go unnoticed. It might’ve made the father seem potentially negligent if it was avoidable not to mention he was the reason they left the house at all. It really all fell on him and I can imagine neither him nor his wife want the world to see. Farmers: ALWAYS TEST YOUR CROPS AND SOIL!!!!
