Good information. Would like to point out however the Gigabyte bios flash back option is called "Q flash Plus" not just Q flash. Qflash itself is part of the normal bios function for updating your bios normally within the bios itself.
Yes and I think that's in my pinned comment. Sometimes during takes I just say the wrong things or something gets cut (these videos start out really long). Thank you for pointing that out!

@@HumbleServant3777 try a different usb drive if you havent already. Also make sure youre using proper power connections from your power supply, and also make sure the file is at the ROOT of the usb drive (aka not in any folders whatsoever)
Hello Jason, you are at the top of my subscribed list and I value your posts. They have helped me greatly in my journey to build a fairly decent pc for flight simming. I wanted to comment about any power issues folks might have in flashing a bios without the cpu. I have a Thermaltake psu and an MSI B550A-Pro motherboard. Turns out the Thermaltake doesn't turn on (fan spinning) unless it is plugged into the ATX-24 motherboard connector. My consternation was that when I did that, the psu still didn't turn on. So after a bit of cursing and settling down I decide to try putting the USB drive into the slot and press the FlashBack button and lo and behold the flash light started flashing, the motherboard led debug light and the psu fan starting turning. Yay!!! While I'm still getting the rig together, I'd thought I'd share my experience for those who might be going or will be going through the same thing. Thanks again for all you do for us. Regards
Thanks for sharing, I'll be actually building a setup with a psu by Thermaltake and the same motherboard as you. It's a psu that starts fanning at about 40% power (hope it's the right term here, english isn't my first language), so I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for sparing me some mild panic xD

Man, you saved me. I thought all motherboards had this feature but just now I see not all of them have it, and gladly before I buy the motherboard for my Ryzen 5 5600. Thank you so much, you really saved me from many problems some money as well, as I don't have anyone near me with a 3000 series Ryzen so I would have to pay to a local technician. Does it have a bios flashback button on the back? Most of the MSI (I think all of them) X570s do. But double check or if you haven't bought it yet check the specs and it will say "bios flashback".

Will have my Asus Crosshair VIII Dark Hero by the end of the year and although I've read through the manual and instructions, etc. it's great to be able to have a visual run-through of the steps required to perform a successful flashback. Thanks for this! It’s my first time building a PC. I had to flash my z690 for 13th gen Intel. This video walked me through perfectly and was able to successfully flash my BIOS without a 12th gen CPU. 👍

Just finished building mine. My mobo showed up (same Gigabyte board here) and I reflashed it. I was skeptical it didn’t work because it abruptly turned off after finishing, and I didn’t know how to turn it on with my PSU. When I installed the cpu, GPU, etc it restarted my mobo screen a few times when I powered up. It “repaired” for about 5 minutes and now it works. Kinda weird but no big issues. Next thing I’m doing is wiping the drives and reinstalling everything I need. Thanks for the vid. Sure helped me.

This is the sliced bread of the computer world. Already did this twice yesterday. Once to recover from a bad flash on one motherboard, and once to prepare the way for a new i7 on a Z690 motherboard.

B550 Auros Pro (rev 1.0). I haven't flashed the BIOS yet because I don't want to take apart my current (i5 7600k) system to do so lol. I'm going to do it all at once as soon as those magical, mythical, ultra rare CPUs are put into existence again. Every time I watch anything hardware related I look at my new mobo and cry a little inside. Cyberpunk uses 90-100% of my 7600k. She's ready to become an emulation machine for the living room haha. You are welcome! Glad I could help! I definitely wouldn't flash it until I was ready to install the CPU. Could be a new bios comes out between now and then and I prefer to flash it as few times as necessary.

I've been planning to get a 5600G CPU and Gigabyte B550 MB combo. I didn't know that the 5600G won't function with the B550 out of the box and I had to update the motherboard first. My research led me to this video. Thanks for the clear tutorial but I'd say that would be the scariest 5 minutes of my life.
Literally looking at your mobo vids from a few weeks ago wondering if I made a bad purchase with my MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus. Do you think it'll work fine with a ryzen 7 5800x? Also glad you uploaded this because I need to do it before my cpu comes in lol.
The board isn't a bad one. It is just that at the time in October when I shot it (when they were still all selling for MSRP) that there were better offerings for the same price. Prices have been all over the place since that time (that's why I included the spreadsheet to help people when prices shift). That board does have bios flashback, so just use this vide and you can flash the bios without a CPU and get it Ryzen 5000 ready.
@@PCBuilderChannel okay that's good. I've just been reading that those boards apparently don't run very well with processors with more than 6 cores and didn't want to end up screwing the pooch cause I wanted a cheaper board.

Btw if your gigabyte mobo starts with serial number SN21 OR SN 2040 or 2040 and up then it shipped ready to go for ryzen 5 series. I confirmed by calling gigabyte.

Hi, you may want to clarify that you need Q-Flash plus to do this, not Q-Flash. There is a big difference and had me confused searching the web for an hour trying to figure out if i could do this with my board. YOU NEED Q-FLASH PLUS TO UPDATE WITHOUT A CPU

Hello Jason, how are you? In my case, I have a motherboard model: B550m Aorus Elite rev 1.3. And I just bought a Ryzen 5900x. For Ryzen to be recognized by the motherboard (B550m Aorus Elite rev 1.3), I have to update the BIOS. I only have one question. Most of the old videos I find here on TH-cam. All TH-camrs teach you how to download an old BIOS called the FC version, do you understand my friend? However, on the Gigabyte website, a "Latest" BIOS is now available, called the FDd version. My only question is. Can I download this FDd version now and update the BIOS directly (using the QFlash method)? Or do I have to update the FC version first and then update to the FDd version? @@PCBuilderChannel Hi! So I tried to qflash my B550 Aorus Master a few moments ago, and the debug Led showed as "00" during qflash. Should I be worried or is it normal for mobos with debug led during bios flash? I haven't touched it until all the lights went off. I have not able to test it yet since i'm still waiting for my last component to arrive.
Do we have to have a blank, newly formatted USB drive for the flashback process, or can we just put the relevant BIOS files onto our already-in-use flash drives? I would imagine folders with mp3s, etc wouldn't confuse the mobo, but I do worry that the drive might have fragmentation that may cause hiccups, but I'm not knowledgeable about such things.

"Warning: Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS. How do we know whether our BIOS even needs an update?
Sorry for going out of topic, but I need advice on this: My system spec is i3 4th gen with integrated HD graphics 4400, 4gb ddr3 1600Mhz x2 (8gb dual channel), 550w 80+ gold psu and the monitor is 1080p 60Hz. I am playing an MMORPG from 2005, and I can rock 30fps with the lowest settings (the integrated graphics is actually the game's minimum requirement). I recently bought a 1660 super to better enjoy the game (which I havent had the chance yet), but now I am thinking to also stream my gameplay. What other upgrades would you recommend? Do you think I need to upgrade to an i5 or i7? How about RAM, would you suggest I add another pair and go to 16gb? I have a very limited budget, btw.
This is a great question for the PCPartPicker.com forums. Off the top of my head, I'd say get a Ryzen 3100 / cheap motherboard combo with 16gb of memory (DDR4 3000 is fine) or an Intel i3 10100 and cheap motherboard with the same memory. But ask the PCpartpicker forums for their advice as well and remember to tell them your region.
So when you say power on your power supply, do you mean just switch it on at the mains? not actually switch it on at the MOBO? Great informative video.

Thanks for the info! I noticed you didn't even have a CPU installed on the board. Is it the case that you don't need to have a CPU installed for any board from any manufacturer to do the flashback? Any negatives to having the CPU installed?
You don’t need to have it if you have the bios flashback button. No negatives. But if you have the CPU installed already and it doesn’t work you have to tear it apart.

Just finished building mine. My mobo showed up (same Gigabyte board here) and I reflashed it. I was skeptical it didn’t work because it abruptly turned off after finishing, and I didn’t know how to turn it on with my PSU. When I installed the cpu, GPU, etc it restarted my mobo screen a few times when I powered up. It “repaired” for about 5 minutes and now it works. Kinda weird but no big issues. Next thing I’m doing is wiping the drives and reinstalling everything I need.

This is the sliced bread of the computer world. Already did this twice yesterday. Once to recover from a bad flash on one motherboard, and once to prepare the way for a new i7 on a Z690 motherboard.

Just make sure it is between 8gb and 32gb as FAT32 won't format on larger drives (hence the "32").

B550 Auros Pro (rev 1.0). I haven't flashed the BIOS yet because I don't want to take apart my current (i5 7600k) system to do so lol. I'm going to do it all at once as soon as those magical, mythical, ultra rare CPUs are put into existence again. Every time I watch anything hardware related I look at my new mobo and cry a little inside. Cyberpunk uses 90-100% of my 7600k. She's ready to become an emulation machine for the living room haha.

I've been planning to get a 5600G CPU and Gigabyte B550 MB combo. I didn't know that the 5600G won't function with the B550 out of the box and I had to update the motherboard first. My research led me to this video. Thanks for the clear tutorial but I'd say that would be the scariest 5 minutes of my life.

Literally looking at your mobo vids from a few weeks ago wondering if I made a bad purchase with my MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus. Do you think it'll work fine with a ryzen 7 5800x? Also glad you uploaded this because I need to do it before my cpu comes in lol.
The board isn't a bad one. It is just that at the time in October when I shot it (when they were still all selling for MSRP) that there were better offerings for the same price. Prices have been all over the place since that time (that's why I included the spreadsheet to help people when prices shift). That board does have bios flashback, so just use this vide and you can flash the bios without a CPU and get it Ryzen 5000 ready.
@@PCBuilderChannel okay that's good. I've just been reading that those boards apparently don't run very well with processors with more than 6 cores and didn't want to end up screwing the pooch cause I wanted a cheaper board.

Hi, you may want to clarify that you need Q-Flash plus to do this, not Q-Flash. There is a big difference and had me confused searching the web for an hour trying to figure out if i could do this with my board. YOU NEED Q-FLASH PLUS TO UPDATE WITHOUT A CPU

For Ryzen to be recognized by the motherboard (B550m Aorus Elite rev 1.3), I have to update the BIOS. I only have one question.
Most of the old videos I find here on TH-cam.
All TH-camrs teach you how to download an old BIOS called the FC version, do you understand my friend? However, on the Gigabyte website, a "Latest" BIOS is now available, called the FDd version. My only question is. Can I download this FDd version now and update the BIOS directly (using the QFlash method)? Or do I have to update the FC version first and then update to the FDd version? @@PCBuilderChannel Hi! So I tried to qflash my B550 Aorus Master a few moments ago, and the debug Led showed as "00" during qflash. Should I be worried or is it normal for mobos with debug led during bios flash? I haven't touched it until all the lights went off. I have not able to test it yet since i'm still waiting for my last component to arrive.
Do we have to have a blank, newly formatted USB drive for the flashback process, or can we just put the relevant BIOS files onto our already-in-use flash drives? I would imagine folders with mp3s, etc wouldn't confuse the mobo, but I do worry that the drive might have fragmentation that may cause hiccups, but I'm not knowledgeable about such things.

@@PCBuilderChannel Thank you for your reply, the thing is like that I can get a brand new MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON MAX WIFI AT £110 DELIVERED the other 2 are at least another £16 for PRO and £29 for the Elite one and they are missing WIFI yes I know i can add it later on but it wil cost more and for some reviews I have read they tend to be slower transfer rate than the one fitted on the motherboard .I may go with MSI it seems ; )

Sorry for going out of topic, but I need advice on this:
My system spec is i3 4th gen with integrated HD graphics 4400, 4gb ddr3 1600Mhz x2 (8gb dual channel), 550w 80+ gold psu and the monitor is 1080p 60Hz.
I am playing an MMORPG from 2005, and I can rock 30fps with the lowest settings (the integrated graphics is actually the game's minimum requirement).
I recently bought a 1660 super to better enjoy the game (which I havent had the chance yet), but now I am thinking to also stream my gameplay.
What other upgrades would you recommend? Do you think I need to upgrade to an i5 or i7? How about RAM, would you suggest I add another pair and go to 16gb?
I have a very limited budget, btw.
This is a great question for the PCPartPicker.com forums. Off the top of my head, I'd say get a Ryzen 3100 / cheap motherboard combo with 16gb of memory (DDR4 3000 is fine) or an Intel i3 10100 and cheap motherboard with the same memory. But ask the PCpartpicker forums for their advice as well and remember to tell them your region.

Thanks! Yes, flip the switch that is on the PSU itself to on, but do not power on the PC using the case "on" button.

additionally, do we have to go through each bios version till we get to the most recent or can we go straight for the most recent like you did? I know f12 and f13 are new since this video so idk if that changes things? I'm pretty new to this and am beyond terrified of bricking my mobo ;-;
Nowadays you can usually go to the most recent, just check the older bios to make sure none of them say they have to be installed first.
You will likely need to flash the bios but should work well

I noticed you didn't even have a CPU installed on the board. Is it the case that you don't need to have a CPU installed for any board from any manufacturer to do the flashback? Any negatives to having the CPU installed?
You don’t need to have it if you have the bios flashback button. No negatives. But if you have the CPU installed already and it doesn’t work you have to tear it apart.
