As much as this movie freaked me out as a kid, I loved it then and love it now. William Hurt’s first movie and he was brilliant in it. RIP William Hurt.

one of the best movies from the 1980s, bar none. Excellent acting, compelling storyline, and holds your attention throughout. Hues very closely to the novel and it's one of the all time greats! It's one of Ken Russell's best pictures!

Saw this in college in the early 80’s. Completely blown away. William Hurt, Bob Balaban and Charles Haid were amazing, especially Hurt. Immense amount of passion. Have watched it countless times. It really reflected b70’s vibe

I've been watching horror films for almost 30 years... This is one of only three films that I have found genuinely scary. This was a film that absolutely needed a director with the genius of Ken Russel to make it work... I think he did a fantastic job.

Only Ken could have pulled this kind of insane mumbo jumbo and make it work.

Great film, I saw this a couple of months ago on Netfix and I was quite surprised how good it was. And this opinion is shared by a 17-year-old Finnish male.

One of the great opening sequences in film. The casual, throway narrative tone contrasts perfectly with the creeping dread of the ambient noise, soundtrack and graphics.

Back in those days they could creep the heck out of us with just letters and a soundtrack. The opening alone is brilliant.

41 years after first seeing this groundbreaking, surreal, haunting and atmospheric movie, have to say that what all the comments below do is express a fascination about the subconscious mind and all the facets of heightened perception that it contains. Could watch it over and over again to see it in it's totality.
Being an inner space explore, this film expresses the hidden depths of our extensive conscious awareness that has been vastly expanded by the use of power plants.

I love the opening, its unique and holds your attention, sets an interesting atmosphere, I think if one or two things were done differently this movie would still be talked about much more widely today than it is, none the less very well written in most aspects, William Hurt got better and better as the movie progressed, some of the trippy scenes were a little too much and I think it really got its point across without having to go so in depth but anyways I liked it a lot.

It is scary for being beyond our comprehension but not depressive. I am amazed that everybody experiences it the same way, by which I mean for the ones that search it the human experience boils down to the same exploration of the void. Then one can choose to interpret it as depressing or just an opening into some new thing we can not - yet -even fathom.

Both the novel and the film are based on John C. Lilly's sensory deprivation research conducted in isolation tanks. Sometimes under the influence of psychoactive drugs like ketamine and LSD, although during lengthy sensory deprivation experiments, many people started hallucinating even without psychoactive substances.

The letters of the film's title passing over each other and then pulling back so we can read it reminds me of the opening of The Terminator. Now I'm wondering if James Cameron got the idea from this, or if a lot of movies did that back then.

IMO, one of the darkest and most sinister title sequences I've ever seen in a film. Except for maybe Alien.

How'd you like William Holden as Max??? His character was more subtle, but he went through a lot throughout the movie. I though Holden's performance was amazing also.
