@@HybridHero I started a reread of the manga up until oras, because I don't have oras and more, because of the red video, and seeing the panel of Norman looking down on Ruby gave my full Prowler theme vides instantly. WHY IS THE MANGA SO FRICKEN GOOD?! I plan to get oras after the reread, should I get any others after that if there are any?
In my opinion, Norman has a big case of keeping everything to himself without explaining anything to anyone. No wonder his actions are so misunderstood to the point where they start affecting his relationships like that.
To be fair he had to spend 5-6 years away from his family to relocate the rayquaza that ruby is indirectly responsible for releasing. Not only that but he also took full responsibility for that blunder which costed him not only time with his family but his initial gym leader exam.
Plus you don't put that kind of guilt on your own son especially at that age. He isn't aware it was such a big deal when all he wanted to do was protect a childhood friend in danger.
Child abuse, domestic violence? Let's run the facts here. 1) Ruby literally ran away from home 2) Ruby caused a giant havoc across 2 major areas; An abandoned ship and slateport. Obviously Norman would need to discipline his kid. If my kid did that, *A punch is not what I would do*
To this day i still believe Ruby Sapphire is Pokemon Adventure at its peak, not only does it have a beautiful stories that depict the growth of the 2 main characters, but also makes side characters with barely any role in the game like Winona, Courtney, and especially Norman very compelling. Also it managed to make Archie and Maxie, who is more often than not referred by the fandom as 2 idiots, absolute menaces along with Groudon and Kyogre.
They also had the only canon ship in the entire franchise, loved the confession, shame that Ruby wanted to act Coy for all that time, boyo wasn't ready to commit yet
I'm going to have to disagree with the initial statement that Ruby doesn't consider his mother's feelings at all before running away. Because there's a panel where he looks downstairs and sees her shortly before he leaves, and he silently apologizes to her with a sad look on his face (maybe it varies between translations, but I think all are important to consider details from). He is thinking of her and knows that this will probably hurt her, but he thinks it's the only way he'll be able to achieve his dream, especially since we know that Norman has been opposing it for a while and Ruby doesn't really have any reason to believe that he would suddenly change his mind out of the blue. I know people get on Ruby's case a lot for not waiting for a few hours for Norman to come home and tell him, but if you really think about it...He already waited 5 years for that, and the moment never came until, from Ruby's limited perspective, it was convenient for Norman. We learn later that's not true, but I think people really forget that Ruby was never told jack squat (partially for good reason), so all he really has to go on are his own interpretations. Not to mention that Norman was against Ruby's desire to do contests when he wasn't around, which I honestly think would piss off anyone at any age, but it's especially prominent because he's a child. Ruby's selfishness in that regard at least partially stems from a certain feeling of "If I don't stand up for me, no one else will", (+ a hell of a lot of trauma avoidance) and while it may not be the most clear on a first readthrough, it's really not a surprise if you're paying attention. Side Note: I really like the one translation of the manga where, when Ruby is opening up about the Salamence incident to Wallace, he says "I lost everything" instead of "I lost a friend". It implies that he also blames himself for the fact Norman left the family and part of his anger might stem from the fact that he might genuinely think his father hates him in that context, and his sadness might instead manifest as anger. It makes their relationship feel even more tragic because Norman ultimately couldn't protect him from the blame in every facet. It actually makes me wish they actually had more time to talk because imagine how much more impactful it would be if Norman temporarily died finally understanding his son's feelings and seeing why things happened in the present while Ruby comes to understand the past. Then his survival really gives you the feeling they can start down a path of healing rather than putting a skewed amount of the burden on solely Ruby. Sorry for ranting. I just really like the Ruby-Sapphire arc and actually wish it went a little bit deeper into certain things on a psychological/emotional level because that's my bread and butter. This probably being my biggest example.
You're totally right, when I talk about him caring for his dreams and that not being egoistical by nature is in part that, what you said, what I'm talking about too. Ruby was never was influenced to or given a clue to follow his dreams, he was given no signal that he could do that even if eventually, he was ostracized and denied of his dreams. In pokémon world for some reason childrens there have way more liberty and have the care from pokémon center if they are away from home as well as they have means of income (pokémon battles, being an entertrainer like Ruby's dream, being a helper for a professor or resecher, pokémon trainer, gym leader, etc) so in his pov he had the means and resources for independence and was in the age and possibility of being independent and his parents never showed any sign that they would permit it, permit his independence, so he runned away. We can see, narratively and psychologicaly speaking, the whys and how it ended up like that and resulting in that (him running away). For his pov other childs had more independence and oportunity than him and he could achieve that by running away and securing his independence and liberty by force.
The real reason is because in tradional Japanese culture males are expected to be the breadwinners of the household. While women stay home and raise the kids and look after the homestead. The creator of Pokémon has stated the lack of a father figure in the games is to actually reflect their real life experience with their dad barely being home and seldom seeing them. Also Pokémon was inspired by the creators childhood involving catching horned beetles and making them fight each other with other friends or beetle battle groups. Also with the creators love of exploring and wanted to create a game centered around their own childhood and life experience. Vola. Pokémon is born. The more you know
14:46 also conflict seems to be a key theme in hoenn in a variety of way. Battling vs contest, beauty vs strength, experience of the old vs potential of the young, land vs sea, Wallace’s feelings for Winona vs his responsibility as the rightful trainer, etc.
Red's father is not shown, but is confirmed to be alive at the time of RBY/FRLG. One of the TVs tied to a SNES console at Celadon Department Store has text that mentions a game Red's dad would like, saying "A sports game! Dad'll like this!" Since it's talking in present tense, that means his dad is around somewhere, just not in the player's reach
No matter how many pros this Norman gets, as somebody who suffered from domestic abuse myself, I can't commend this sort of behaviour. No matter the situation, a father - a parent - should never beat his child. So called "tough love" can easily destroy any sort of trust and understanding between a parent and a child, if not cripple a person mentally. Norman from RSE/ORAS way better.
It's a hard thing to say; The line between Discipline and abuse is very thin. If you're too soft on them, they will get spoiled (feeling entitled), if you're too hard on them (they won't trust you).
I'm pretty sure that was at least partially the point of Normans character in the manga, his "tough love" isn't supposed to be a good thing, it's one of the reasons this entire misunderstanding between him and Ruby existed in the first place, their battle was the result of his lack of communicating with his son leading Ruby to distance himself and to ultimately run away, which enraged Norman. In the end, what mended their relationship wasn't Normans "tough love" (if anything the "tough love"-approach almost led to them both dying), but Norman speaking clearly and giving his son his support.
A bit excessive but Norman only beats his son that one time and it is because he is running away from home. May be it is the different in culture but in Asia, parent hit their child when they did something wrong is quite normal so I don't feel Norman's action is that wrong. Ruby really causes this parent sad and angry.
@@nguyenphuc306 In Asia, if your teenage child inconvenienced others; You would get a beating. My friend literally got smacked down into the floor after getting caught smoking in elementary grade by his dad. And I've seen other kids get thrown into the river or lake for doing mischief.

Red’s father is referenced in the Celedon Dpt Store’s electronics floor. “It’s a sports game. Dad might like this.” It looks like Red has the only father that’s a part of the protagonist’s life outside of the game’s plot.
@@areaxisthegurkha Yes, but we don’t know where they are. The most likely answer would be that the dad is at work. Somebody’s paying for the house, and the fact that the mom is always there when the protagonist goes home makes it pretty hard to believe that she has a job.
Norman's story kind of reminds me of my own story with my dad, I wasn't really close with my dad because he wasn't there for my childhood, when growing up my father was in the US while my family and I were in PR, from my understanding he had a very good job at a factory in CT where he manufactured aircraft parts or something, and as his job was very demanding he was usually working overtime and stuff and would only take time off like once a year for Xmas and stuff, and that was when he would get on a plane to be with us, and my interactions with the man were not very good because his hobbies included doing work as a handyman or mechanic, while my hobbies included mainly playing videogames or listening to music and stuff, and I was actually really bad at sports because I wasn't taught by my father to play anything, so that is why my interests started lining up with art related stuff such as music, and I actually learned to play a bunch of instruments, because the Music teacher looked after me during breaks and even during lunch, and he even told my mom that I had a knack for music and that the skill should be further developed by going to an art school, but this is where my dad didn't really understand any of it and did not believe in me, he wanted me to be an athlete like my brother or a math wiz like my other brother, and through his interactions with them I truly felt like he was proud of them while he mostly looked down on my interests and stuff, and as such I didn't go to an art school or did the things I liked, but I eventually did get into computers and became IT, mostly because my family were very bad with technology, and all sorts of stuff at home would break down with no money to repair things, so I kind of took it upon myself to take apart the stuff that broke and try to figure out how everything worked, and in some cases I did manage to repair some things, which is why I developed that skillset since I always had stuff to repair, and eventually I even got a job that I've been working at for about 8 years now, and it was only after my father was at his deathbed that he confessed his thoughts to me, apparently he was always proud of me and wanted to see me succeed at things, but the reason why he didn't let me pursue anything in art, was because he was afraid that I would be unable to make anything of myself, since he did see many family members that had gone through similar things but were leading awful lives due to having no steady income and stuff, and as such he didn't want me to struggle with such a life, which is why he was tough on me but he was actually real proud that I made something out of myself, and that I succeeded in becoming real good with IT and such, especially considering how bad he was with technology himself, where he barely even knew how to use his smartphone and would always come to me for stuff related to tech, and that was when I basically made peace with my old man, and I now miss him as he is no longer around. TLDR All parents love their kids, its just that they have a hard time showing it sometimes, and for some they try to raise their kids with tough love, just to try and get them used to the hardships of reality, and the only way to truly know about this kind of stuff, is to just have a heart to heart with your folks, and closing them from your lives is just not the right answer unless they are actually toxic and bad people.
I love that you brought up the truth behind the Lightning strike incident, it's like in gsc when they edited a hand to get rid of the notion of a mother slapping her child
8:32 The german version also made this line more tame. However, I believe that it is, while still beeing out of place, better/more fitting then what we got in the english version. "Was ist?!" "Willst du mir was was sagen?! Dann komm her!!" translates to "What is it?!" "Do you want to tell me something?! Then get ( up) here!!" and I think that this fits way better to Normans other lines in that fight. For some reason, the german version also has him punch ruby.
I remember Red mentioning his father in Red/Blue/Yellow when you check out the games in Celadon City's Department Store. "An RPG game. Dad'll like that!"
Bruh what the heck i always heard bout norman treatment towards brendan in the manga was harsh but i never thought he was borderline abusve af Amd he wasn't even that menacing in the game
Imagine Pokemon, but father-son relationship is like between Heihachi and his son from Tekken. "Dad you beat me as a kid, Imma throw you into a Heatran lair"
Yeah, one of the things I don't like of the manga is that everyone is edgier and more intensefor no reason (in some cases). Like, attacking someone with your Pokémon as a hello is view as something normal, Lol
Aaa I remember reading this so long ago! I think I was too young to understand the deph of the sacrifice and everything that happened, especially with Celibi, but looking back, this truly was one of the best Pokemon arcs ever. so much emotion and growth.
20:03 this part never made sense to me. Ruby was completely justified in defending himself against a wild Salamence--we saw what it did to him, and it could've for sure done worse. It's the Salamence's (Zinnia's) fault for attacking two random children and going for a rampage--no one here should've takem the 'blame'. Are you telling me he should've just sat there? Really, makes what happened to Zinnia all the more justified.
Hmmm I don’t think him defending himself was the problem but sending it off like that without resolving things may have been? Regardless he was 6 so can’t blame him one bit LOL
@@HybridHero Ruby did his best, and there was no way he could've predicted it was going to destroy the lab. This whole thing about Norman being banned for being a Gym Leader for 5 years just felt very forced. And even if Ruby did nothing, it turns out in the ORAS arc that Salamence is from Zinnia's and was going to destroy the lab either way. It just felt like attacking them...for fun, I guess.
Having a facility containing a legendary pokemon treated as a god by some. Not having enough security measures to deal with an injured Salamence. How Rayquaza couldnt just escape by itself is beyond me. They should hold the facility responsible, not a dude who has nothing to do with it, and especially not a kid who just did self defense
Ruby was Norman favourite, he inherited his battle sense and genius. Heck, Ruby once aspire to become like his father. Then ONE day, suddenly he turn 180°. I can see why Norman felt betrayed and disappointed, especially since Ruby (like his father) kept things to himself. This is a bad habit of both of them, Norman doesn't give Ruby the chance to explain and Ruby doesn't want to explain. Imagine this, you're a Pro Rugby player and your son is as talented as you, even aspire to become like you then one day decided he just want to become a yoga instructor even saying that violence is bad.

Such an engaging video! This is the first arc of the Adventures manga I've read from start to finish, it's so good! I'm currently trying to work through it all (like I read odd volumes when I was younger but missed basically everything between vol 1 and vol 7 of the RBY arc) and I have no idea why it's taking me so long to get through that first arc when its actually great 😂 sitting down to read is just hard sometimes lol
The real reason: Japanese work culture and the fact that these games were appealing to kids. Often times because of how often dads were in the office crunching away, their kids would literally either never see them, or only see them a few hours a day. This culture then permeates into the games that are being marketed towards said kids, and you get a section of media where deadbeat dads are pretty prevalent. Earthbound, One Piece, Pokemon, MHA... All series aimed towards kids with absent fathers that I can name off the top of my head.
Um...in black 2 and white 2, Nate and Rosa's Mom states that their Father works at the pokémart in the players hometown... but their father still address Nate & Rosa as customers when you interact with one of the pokémart employees and not as his kids for some unknown reason, maybe he can't tell that their his kids? Who knows?🤷♀️
20:03 I was questioning where was the supposed scene with Salamance that gave Ruby a scar, here we go, I just thought it would have been in the beginning of the story
I was pretty confused when people talked about Norman and domestic abuse, until I realized I had the reprint that made it so that Norman wasn't exactly beating up Ruby. It was quite surprising when I read the translated version of the original copies.
The reason why dads don't exist and moms are mostly just hometown decors (except for the DPPT mom, she was off doing her own thing when we run into her in Hearthome) is cause you can't have an adventure with parents looming over unless they're a problem like Norman.
I actually heard of a different theory. In Japan, having a single mother is actually common and having a proper family was almost impossible unless you are a company president.

Define "actually" toxic and bad people. Mine raped me.
I love that you brought up the truth behind the Lightning strike incident, it's like in gsc when they edited a hand to get rid of the notion of a mother slapping her child
They exist, they just end up being like Giovanni and Norman...
Both absolute chads.
“A *Sports* game! Dad’ll like that!”, is the actual quote.
Crazy I didn’t know
Too bad dad doesn’t exist eh
man the ace attorney ost really comes in clutch in every video it just makes me get glued to the video even more, keep up the crazy good job dude
I'm so glad the pokemon adventures is getting talked about more
Bruh what the heck i always heard bout norman treatment towards brendan in the manga was harsh but i never thought he was borderline abusve af
Amd he wasn't even that menacing in the game
I mean, everyone is edgy and more intense in the manga (in the good and the bad sense).
The games are made for 10 year olds. What did you expect?
and Norman in the manga still manages to be a better father than Ghetsis, even before character development
I don’t care what anyone says, manga norman is THE menace. Only thing that could kill him was ozone poisoning
Actual insanity
Hey at least Norman didn't left the region to get a milk...he's only your average Asian dad
Fun fact: the Italian version of the manga is COMPLETELY uncensored, we can enjoy the real pages like the Japanese
Shout out to the Italians for that
Imagine Pokemon, but father-son relationship is like between Heihachi and his son from Tekken. "Dad you beat me as a kid, Imma throw you into a Heatran lair"
Can't believe Ruby just, had a Celabi in his back pocket.
Not on the level of AoT's ending, but Red having a Celebi ruined the story.
I kinda feel like the relationship between Ruby and Norman, kinda mirrors the one between Shinji and Gendo in Evangelion
Bro is physically abusive to his son, the Manga really adds unexpected nuance.
Norman Grayson, also known as Omnor-Man.
2:57 What I wouldn't give for those literal Sonic shoes...
Because only Norman is Chad enough to find milktank and return
8:40 in the french release of Kurokawa, they kept the original scene where Norman punches Ruby 👀
Norman's last name in this universe is totally Osborn.
Norman was actually willing to let Ruby do whatever he likes but when he learned that his son left home without warning, that was where he got mad.
You just got a new subscriber. As an anime and game only for Pokemon I never knew this much lore about the pokemon manga
Norman explained through TFS quotes:
Game: “bye sooooon!”
Manga: “DODGE! **hits son**
Anime:
“I need an adult”
“I am an adu-“
“NO. No, you are not.”
The dbz arbitrary😂😂
What do you mean I ain’t got no daddy?! 🥲
Oh get outta here
RUBY!!!!!!
You can't escape me!
I'LL CHASE YOU TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH!
I like these manga vids. I may wanna read the hoenn and kalos mangas. If i had a manga, it’ll take place in galar and my partner is inteleon. Kinda like this one sinnoh manga which hareta. Greninja is for if i was in kalos
Haven’t read the Kalos manga yet!
Is it just a coincidence that Giovanni and Norman look so similar, and around the time Giovanni went on the run Norman showed up in Hoenn? Hmmm 🤔
Definitely related
Don’t forget Bianca’s father. I like him as he is probably the only parent in the Pokémon world that actually cares and wants to protect his kid.
10:57 Im 34 and I still get questioned for making my own decision
Keep it up on your work and this video and channel
I love this video and channel
Thanks you for your video and channel
I love Pokemon all franchise
Wally at least proved that despite his condition, proved he can also be someone not bound
He may as well be having a surname - Osborne.

There are no fathers in pokemon because of the Great Pokémon War. Not everyone had Surge's luck.
wow that fan animation that I will not mention of ruby makes so much more sense now.
Fatherless behavior
Guess thats what it means to become the champion after all
the pokemon adventures ruby & sapphire story is unexpectedly amazing, wow :O
i'm not crying, you're crying...
i suddently have a gigantic urge to buy and read this manga, I might do it
Eh check back in an hour I’ll have my affiliate link there so you can purchase it!
Funny how Normal types get out classed and shined by other skilled types. . .And fighting, not forgetting that
Kinda like that it’s the strongest one here just because of that
@@HybridHero Would rather overlevel my team then take this guy on. Not risking being on top of a building
13:40 I want 1 million bucks
Such an engaging video! This is the first arc of the Adventures manga I've read from start to finish, it's so good!
I'm currently trying to work through it all (like I read odd volumes when I was younger but missed basically everything between vol 1 and vol 7 of the RBY arc) and I have no idea why it's taking me so long to get through that first arc when its actually great 😂 sitting down to read is just hard sometimes lol
Funny that this video showed up in my recommendation, I'm actually reading through the manga right now
The real reason: Japanese work culture and the fact that these games were appealing to kids.
Yeah i understand now why every protaganoist has no father
Norman makes Maxie and Archie look like saints
You know, the people that wanted to try and control the god of the skies. Look where this got you!
Why does norman looks like giovani in this manga?
Giovanni in the manga looks way more sinister than Norman
Cause Norman aged and his hairline went back
@@HybridHero being a pokemon trainer really took a tool on his hairline
That's what I like about the GCs. You got NO parent in those!
''strongest gym leader''
**STRONGEST GYM LEADER**
My parents: "Pokemon is evil you shouldnt be looking at that stuff!"
Me: "NO LOOK AT THIS VIDEO!!"
PokeSpe's pokemon world just has a different perspective from parenting compared to the real world
I would love to see more of the Pokemon Adventures manga! It is such an awesome series!
The reason why dads don't exist and moms are mostly just hometown decors (except for the DPPT mom, she was off doing her own thing when we run into her in Hearthome) is cause you can't have an adventure with parents looming over unless they're a problem like Norman.
Oh lord, even the adoptive fathers are bad.
This made me cry too. Hot damn...... ; _ ; Norman is such a chad, I see him in a new light, geeze.
We need more of it!!
You remind me of how much Pokémon in the manga is peak
I no longer feel sorry for kicking his ass in gen 3 what i do to his pokemon is nothing compaired to what my pokemon should do to him.
To represent and relate to the players of Pokémon

Giovanni actually was a pretty decent father. And he’s the bad guy.
technically there's 22 protags not 20. the heroes for S&M, and USUM are not the same.
Gabby and Ty made me a millionaire with a bunch of lvl 100 Pokemon.
I actually heard of a different theory. In Japan, having a single mother is actually common and having a proper family was almost impossible unless you are a company president.
Mudkip looks so confused here 2:59
Poor guy
It's a cool story but when most anime/mangs fathers are that way it gets weird. I do want some basic good fathers sometimes 😊
