Something extra strange about the whole Gary thing in the first book is that by the time Ash had gotten to Hoenn, Gary had already retired as a trainer to become a researcher.
I believe the reason Gary is there is because in gen 3 and gen 1 I believe you could name blue different names and one of them was Gary
The second book you showed was sold at the scholastic book fair that came to my elementary school in like 1999. Every kid got this book and it blew everyone away that Pideot was pronounced Pid-jit.

I also want to point out that the Pidgeot page mentions that it catches "unsuspecting Fish element prey". Not Fish type, or Water element, which would at least be consistent with the book's type/element stuff, but Fish Element.
i had a copy of the first advanced handbook covered and vividly remember Torchic's name being mislabeled as Tentacool, among the other errors named. it seems like your handbook fixed that mistake lol

In the Super Deluxe Pokémon Handbook, it shows Fearow instead of Spearow and says Mega Lopunny’s type is pure Normal.
Me and my friend argued on mega lopunnys typing because he saw how this book said it was pure normal but I kept saying it was normal fighting 😭

I had the Sinnoh era version of this. I remember because of it I thought Rotom was a legendary for the longest time, and it mixed up the pictures of Porygon and Porygon2 so to this day I still confuse them for each other.
Oh my fucking god that book did the same for rotom for me, I had no idea the book was why I thought I was a legendary as a kid but that’ll explain it

There was this one really cool thing that I did in Ultra Sun, where I got a lv 100 legendary pokemon from one of those mystery gift things, and they would never do the attacks I wanted them to, so I literally spent hours just feeding it berries, battling with it, and such, until it finally started listening to me. But here's where it got crazy: Ever since then, it would almost always survive on just 1 hp, deal extra damage, and such, and this was super great, and I basically, in trying to get it to listen to my commands, made it the most stat-boosted friendship-based training pokemon ever.
Wow, wish I had that luck. But what Pokémon was it??? And do you still have it?

I have a copy of the Gen 6 handbook. And the most mind numbing thing I've noticed in that book, that I'm surprised wasn't mentioned in this video, was that they labeled Donphan as a normal type. Probably a typo or something but how did they mess that up?
Especially since Donphan is a pure Ground type, and NOT Normal Type. Also, I didn't know Phanpy's ability(Donphan's pre-evolution); was Pickup, either. I thought it was always Sturdy, even before it evolved. But Pickup is still a good ability to have. But Sturdy is way better as an ability.

The first one was screwed up but it looked good. And admit it, the font used for the first one (the most screwed) is the one I use in my videos.
Ooh, I had the handbook for gen 2, and the thing I remember best for some reason was that the pronunciation guide for Raikou said "REE-koh." It varies whether someone pronounces the -kou like "koh" or "koo" but pronouncing Rai that way is so out of nowhere, it's like calling Raichu "Reechu." I remember feeling clever as a kid when I caught the mistakes in the handbooks for it and gen 3.
Friggin "pid-jit spinner" killed me, especially when I remembered theres a perpetual spin glitch for the original pokemon red/blue games

Milan Beerepoot that is true, but I’ve learned to ignore the anime with mispronunciations like Ar-see-us and Ra-ta-ta... for me I tend to follow the root words they get their name from, or the Pokédex Pro app for 3ds, android, and iOS. Those follow the root words for the most part, and correct a lot of the anime’s mistakes.

Late to this, but the Pid-jit thing is probably because the original pokerap prounounces Pidgeot that way. (It's near the end of the names, in the last group, for anyone curious.)
I actually had the first two of these myself, though never the third. I did have the Johto book as well - or at least the first part/version. See, for some reason they intentionally left out a bunch of things that were in like a more complete version 2 of it or something. Bizarre.

That Gen-I handbook was THE coveted item of my elementary school's library. There was only one copy, and kids (myself included) would hold onto it for weeks at a time.
I remember the guide recommending bringing your own dragons to fight Lance, seemingly unaware that the only dragon-type move in the game was Dragon Rage. (Not that we knew that either.)

@@pixelarticuno1636 No, no you don't. But, the beak is a bit big. Zapdos and Moltres have pretty big and long beaks. But Articuno has always had a beak similar to most normal birds.
20:00 actually they probably wanted to take mechanics from game like level-upping - for example there was an episode of anime that a kid was training on a treadmill and answering to seniors' question about pokemon like what lvl they learn attacks or evolve
But the anime stopped using levels after that episode
The episode is called “The School of Hard Knocks”. It was in the original anime and I believe he was on his way to Sabrina because Erica is swapped with Sabrina in the Anime
The "Pid-jit" one, at least for me, is from Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew where I think someone pronounces it like that. Or Pidgeot itself cries its own name like that. So until fairly recently, that was how I pronounced it because of that. Hadn't watched a lot of the anime, and that was one of the few Pokémon DVDs I had as a kid, since my mum brought it back from Bali when she went on a trip there with our neighbour she was friends with across the road.
I do remember reading in a guide that rattata evolved at level 21. When it evolved sooner, I basically had shocked Pikachu face, lol.
My first books were a very short Kalos book that told you the starters, the box legends, the eveeloutions, and some other random Pokémon, and a how to beat diamond and pearl guide despite not owning the games.

These books are what a school boy or girl would make as a final project
a couple funny ones missed in the first generation handbook, the color behind the oddish art indicates that it's grass psychic despite being grass poison. Slowpoke and Slowbro are also apparently water and poison type according to their own background coloring. Venusaur also has element listed twice, listing it as seed element in addition to grass and poison element.
They were on something when they wrote these.
The torn starter pages were probably used as posters. I used to do the same thing with Guitar & Music Magazines.
In high school my wall was literally covered in about 30+ Pages of Guitar World, Revolver, & Alternative Press.
With like 5 or 6 actual posters thrown in.

I had the Gen I Deluxe Collector's Edition handbook as a kid, and even though I recognized that it was trying to combine the game canon and anime canon together into one giant contradictory amalgamation, I still trusted it on its word for everything. Like, it has a list of one-of-a-kind Pokémon like Mewtwo, Mew, the legendary birds... and it also mentions Eevee and Farfetch'd, presumably because you could only obtain one of each of them in Red and Blue. So here's kid me in 2000 watching the anime episode "A Way Off Day Off" which opens with Ash and friends encountering a whole flock of migrating Farfetch'd, and I'm like " NO! That's WRONG! There's only one Farfetch'd in the WHOLE WORLD!"
I can only imagine how many other young naive misconceptions these things were responsible for 😆
I had a Sinnoh handbook that listed Rotom as a Legendary Pokemon. The whole time I was like "wat?"
That was a common misconception at the time, because you could only catch one and it had its own music.
I found necrozma by accident coz it played different music
I thought that for a while too. I was confused how they have a Rotom Dex actually possessed by a Rotom until I found out it was just a regular Pokémon. I also had a Platinum handbook, maybe that's where I got it from?

Sooo… I have the Univa(can’t spell) essential handbook (the just essential version and not deluxe) and the Kalos specific handbook with what they called ‘Kalos Coastal Subregion’. But they both are still similar to the deluxe edition he has. Also I haven’t played either region stated earlier games
oh man the book's overall layout and design is so 90's/early 2000s and messy. definitely screams Staff Who Doesn't Normally Design Semi-Picturebooks.

Imagine if in the Gen 1 book, Good Against was what Types of Moves the Pokémon resists, so the Good Against & Bad Against only dealt with resistances while ignoring weaknesses.
In the final book, mega sceptile is listed as "Type: Grass". Not grass and dragon
I saw that too because I have the same book, and I also noticed that the book says Sandile is just the desert croc and not the Desert Croc Pokémon.
But sceptile is pure grass

I've got the non-deluxe version of the second book you showed, it's hilarious that they didn't take the opportunity to correct most of these mistakes. One I did notice they fixed is that the spearow image is missing from it's evolution guide in the original, the blue circle is there but it's empty.

I love torchic’s page the most, it for some ungodly reason has tentacool’s moves instead of its own, also the amount of things he didn’t catch in the gen 1 book is shocking.

So it just doesn't have Fire Type moves, just a Normal Type move(a type it's strong against when it evolves into Combusken) and a Water type move, one of the types it's weak to. Hey dude, that's why Torchic is the BEST Hoenn starter; but all 3 Hoenn starters are amazing anyways, no matter which one you use. They're all awesome to use, no matter what. But can Mudkip learn Flamethrower and Leaf Blade? And can Treecko learn Ground and Poison type moves?

Something I found funny was in on the Blastoise page for the Gen 1 handbook they talk about Nicknames saying "Have more than one Squirtle? When you get a new pokemon you can give it a nickname." Why would you have more then one Squirtle in gen 1? Like maybe it's a reference to the Squirtle Squad from the anime but still it's weird.
