Hello. I am a fellow TH-camr with 543 subscribers as of now living in Lao Cai/Sapa Vietnam. I have been here for 3 years now as an English teacher and have dedicated my channel to showing the beauty of tier3 /tier 4 cities and rural parts of Vietnam. I pay 6milvnd per month for my studio which is a lot compared to yours in Danang but I do have floor to ceiling windows and a wall to separate it and make it look more bigger. I am from America as well and have traveled Asia just like you (I am the younger version of you it appears) for we both live the same way and want the same things. I also advise people on how to eat cheap/healthy and adapt to the culture and learning curve when moving here. Especially if a place like Lao Cai where I was the only Westerner for an entire year in 2021. I wanted to compliment you on your channel and ask that you give mine a look. I have playlist for all aspects of Vietnam from Motorcycle racing in Sapa, to teaching advice. I also work with local ethnic groups in Sapa and have been the boom operator in a few films we submitted to a couple Independent film festivals. I just finally reach 5 patreon supporters and after 12 years of work, seeing my channel and passion grow with new subscribers everyday, I try to post daily and keep a variety of topics with even new ones such as podcast about military things. FMF corpsman 8404 2002- (You will know what that is if you ..) Happy Tet!

This was good to hear. I was here in 68-69 as a Marine grunt. On a jungle ridge near the A Shau valley, and other places, I was awed by the natural beauty. I did not meet many Vietnamese people, but the children were always nice.
I came back in 2018-19. And since October 2022, I have been back n forth between Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, and Thailand. Most of my time in Vietnam, I stay in Da Nang. It's where I first set foot in Vietnam on Christmas Morning 1968. The people are wonderful, as is the natural beauty, the food an more.

    • @DanielCunningham_Gia-na-dai
      @DanielCunningham_Gia-na-dai 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I was there in 1969-70. Christmas night of 1969, Bob Hope was making jokes about the Green Berets at a USO show. I could hear him on the radios on Hill 125, i think, while going down to an ambush site. We lost two of our guys that night.
I got to know a lot of the people. I remember carrying kids piggy-back and even riding on a water buffalo. Some of the people I knew in I Corps, around Marble Mountain, Hai Van Pass, were refugees from the communist takeover up North. They hated the communists like I could not. In the South Vietnamese Regional Forces there were men who had fought with the Viet Minh against the French and then against the viet cong with support from the Americans. Why do you suppose no one ever talked about these things? Could it be the communists' re-education camps beat the life out of them? Some of the mountain people, like the Hmong, were massacred by the communists - the ones who did not make it to North America, or to Thailand, where they are exploited.
I was in Quy Nhon, Da Nang and Saigon in 2017-18, 2020, and 2022. On the way back and forth to Thailand where I lived and to the States where I had to go to have heart surgery at the VA hospitals.
The people are wonderful? I found the people to be sullen and uncommunicative. At the beginning of the COVID craziness in 2020.
The food I remember from back in my marine corps days was c-rations that we mixed in with the rice the RF's would cook in their big pots. Poor food but companionship.
In this century the food - basically I find Thai food to be much better - and I can order food in Thai - the dialect of Vietnamese that I learned at the language school at the Presidio in Monterey in 1969 was from Saigon. In I Corps the dialect was closer to the Northern speech. But, anyway we communicated with people using the pigeon talk that emerged there. And money talked too, of course.
In this century I have not been able to talk Vietnamese to anyone. Even the words for greetings have changed. If you remember, we used to say "Chao ba," to older women and "Chao em, " to kids. Now they only say "Chao ban, " to everyone. But I never ordered food in a Vietnamese restaurant. In 2017 .... 2022 I was always with a Vietnamese friend who knew English. So it did not matter that I could say, "nuoc mam," and "thit bo" (beef). And nobody cared. They just wanted my money.
And it is noisy in traffic. Terrible drivers driving badly on Honda scooters and not paying attention to other drivers and honking horns all the time.
So you think this guy was good to hear? Did he talk about the scammers at Marble Mountain? the card readers at the ATM machines? These things are important to know about.
He tells us it is hot and humid. Right. Good information.

@DanielCunningham_Gia-na-dai Daniel one thing I learned about the Vietnam War is the lying by our political and military leaders. Most of the people who fought against us, north and south weren't
communists. They were freedom fighters...like their ancestors. Some 800 years ago, or more, they defeated an army, and navy of 500,000+ sent by Kubla Khan.
      What happened to the
minority groups of Vietnam, after the war happens in many wars. When the Revolutionary War ended in 1782 those who were loyal to the British were brutalised. Their property was torched, or destroyed. Violence against them was widespread, even death. Many fled to Canada.
Growing up we were told we were helping to free the Vietnamese people. It's BS. After the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu- the Geneva Accords called for free elections in all of Vietnam in 1956. The US scuttled it. Dwight Eisenhower said they couldn't allow it because Ho Chi Minh would win 90% of the vote in the North, and South.
I got to know a woman from Cam Lo ville in Quang Tri Province. She sold Coca-Colas. We talked when I was at certain places. She had her three kids with her. After a few weeks she asked why I came to Vietnam. I said 'your president asked us to'. She said 'he's not our president. Your president make our president'. That was true. CIA coups, rigged elections, crushing the opposition...etc. She then asked 'who were the Redcoats'? I said the British. She then asked 'why did Americans fight them'? I said 'they had to get them out to be free and independent'. I felt the irony at that moment. She said 'you don't get mad at me'. Twice. I said 'no, we talk. You say what you feel.' Then, she leaned closer, and said 'Americans Redcoats in Vietnam'. She was right, and it got me thinking. In 1935 Major General Smedley D. Butler wrote 'War is a Racket'. He told the real reasons for wars he had been in, and led. Haiti was for the 'sugar interests', Mexico for the oil companies. China, 1927, for Standard Oil (Rockefeller company), Cuba for the National City Bank boys, Nicaragua for Brown and Brothers banking...
Daniel I liked the story about the food. I was at Charlie 2 my first time in Nam. Above Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province. We Marines provided the security with day patrols, and night ambushes. The base was army artillery. They got good hot food. We ate c-rats. Our officers ate the Army's hot chow. They had cooks! Our squad leaders asked our LT, and Captain if we could too at noon meal. They said we had our rations. People were pissed. I didn't know anything till Hall came up to me and asked if I had my gas mask. I said no. I was told my 1st day it's useless. Extra weight. Get rid of it ect. My position was at the front gate. Concertina wire. During the middle of the noon meal a gas grenade accidentally landed in the middle of guys enjoying hot chow. When they saw it, and when it went off, food trays went flying in the air, and they ran out in panic. Was one of the funniest things I saw.

Most of the people who fought against us were slaves of the communists. The communists took them from their villages in the North and sent them down South, with little support, to murder village leaders and take the rice from the villagers and rape the women and take their boys and press them into the viet cong.
Almost 1,000,000 people fled from North Vietnam after your freedom fighters took over. No one ran North to live under communism.
Ho Chi Minh did not hold an election because he did not know if he would win. So what he did instead was to send thousands of guerillas South in the 1950's in blatant violation of the UN accords. The Canadian observers in Viet Nam monitored the violations and reported them. I am not imaging this. It was documented. The refugees from the communists, many of them catholics, but not all. Some were Buddhists some were in the fighting because they were Hmongs, Gia Lai people, and other tribes and knew they would be persecuted and they were, after the Americans left.
I knew a mamasan who sold sodas to us marines who had two husbands murdered by the viet cong. @@paulmeuse7774 I do not believe your story about the Mongols. My sources indicate there were never as many as 500,000 people in the whole Mongol nation back in the time of Genghis Khan. One author claims the Mongols asked permission of the Vietnamese (It was only the North part of the country then as the Vietnamese did not expand to the South to take over from the Cham and Indian people there until later) - to go through their country in order to invade China from the South. Then the Viet burned their own crops - the scortched earth strategy - to discourage the Mongols, letting their own people die until the Mongols went back and finished their war against China from the North. I know the American revolutionaries persecuted the British sympathisers in the 1770' - 80's. And some of them were Tories by day when the British came looking for rebels and they were revolutionaries by night when the rebels came at with Indian allies to ask if they had any food to spare. And I know that in Quang Nam province some villagers would snitch to the South Vietnamese Quan Canh police that their neighbors were viet cong supporters - just so their neighbors would get taken in for questioning and torture.
I know what you are saying . And it is the same communist propaganda that they always say. And I know that what I know is true. The Frogs walked in to SE Asia and took over in the 1800's and took chunks of Viet Nam on the way to taking Cambodia and Lao from Thailand. And I know that the Japanese went into SE Asia to Burma with no resistance until the British and Americans drove the Japanese out and taught the locals how to fight. And I know that your freedom fighters tried to liberate Malaya and Thailand and Indonesia also and got wiped out without any trace. None of these fights had anything to do with American intervention and Cuba is a communist disaster now under the freedom fighters and Philippines is a functioning democracy because the Americans fought for the Filipinos. I know that after the Americans sold out in SE Asia, with the b.s treaty the mad-dog communists in Cambodia murdered how many millions of their own people ? 1.8 million, or 3.0 million. ?? Until the communist Vietnamese invaded Cambodia in 1978 to put a stop to madness.
      Why were you there?

I am Vietnamese. We maintain a low cost of living, so people can join the workforce to move the country forward into an industrialized nation. Vietnam is a socialist country led by a Communist party, it has a mixed economy, completely different from North Korea. Foreigners who want to come to Vietnam to live are always welcome, but that is not our goal like Thailand and Philippines, so don't look at us with the mindset that we want to extort your money by any means. Our culture and tradition is to be hospitable and respectful, to be polite, and what is important is that most of the population are not members of the communist party. You can choose another place to retire and that is not something we mind.

As to your comment about dental care, I lived and worked in VN for 9+ years and got to know Australians that worked at the Australian Consulate. They told me that they would wait to get back to VN after holiday to get their dental care and eyes checked. They said the services are great, quality facility and modern equipment and the price is really cheap. As a US citizen, I know our health care cost is really expensive but I was surprised that even Australia is expensive compared to VN.

I had a tooth, which needed a crown. My Houston dentist wanted 2K. My Blue Cross Blue Shield only paid 40%, it was $1,200 out of pocket for me. My dentist was still working with BCBS to get the approval before work could be started. Before the approval came I took a vacation trip to Vietnam where I visited KangNam clinic, which was in Saigon. Kangnam was Korean owned but the dentists actually working my tooth were Vietnamese. They were excellent, professional and pleasant. The procedure started around 1PM on first day I came in. The next day I returned around the same time and the crown was installed within an hour. They issued me a 15-year warranty certificate. I could come back anytime I had any issue or needed adjustment. That was two years ago and I have not had any reason to come back. The cost for the crown was $250. It was the best dental service ever for me.

I plan to go there in March. From Thailand. What this Brian guy says here is mostly nonsense. He lets you know it is hot. He does not warn you to not let the friendly young female merchants take your credit card out of your sight for a minute. Nor that the ATM machines have the readers that steal your information and sell it to crooks in India. The people in the little towns are friendly, that is true. And you really need to rent a scooter and go into the hills and meet the tribal people. Not just the communist propaganda in the museum of American atrocities. I know what I am talking about. i was there in 1969-70 in the marine corps and since 2017 a few visits going back and forth between Thailand and the U.S. I got sent to the language school for the three-month course in Vietnamese in 1969 and I could talk to the common people back in 1970. In 2017 I could not talk to people. The language changed. The attitude of the people has changed. I have one Vietnamese friend, who speaks English well. She was born after the communist takeover. Her mother, other people in my age bracket who were there back then, do not talk because they have been in the re-education camps

There are many vietnamese people living in this area. I think that the fact Viet Nam is basically a buddhist nation has a major influence in the attitude and conduct of people. The buddhist tradition is prevalent in south east countries. My ethnicity is caucasian. I am certain Dan would agree that people in Southeast asia are more humble than the people in western

Bryan is from California and the heat is something he mention first, he must be talking to us Canadians but that's why I come here, to thaw out from Canada's winter months. My only advice for first timers coming to Vietnam or Thailand for that matter, you have to have the mindset that your not in North America or wherever you maybe from. It's different. It's my 4th time here and 6 times to Thailand once you leave your country's mindset at home, you'll be fine. If your plan is to fully retire, take Bryan's advice, check it out for 6 months to see if it is a good fit. Doesn't hurt to learn some basic language it goes a long way with the locals even to make them smile. Travel safe and Be Well.

The South Vietnamese people lost everything to the communists. Another good interview with valuable information. I was in Vietnam in 1968 and it was far different than what was described in this video. I think the difference is the people then were chasing the dollar. That provides a very different view of the world.

    • @alfaromeo6985
      @alfaromeo6985 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

In 1968 it was the Tet offensive. People were running for their lives. It was basic survival one day at a time. They had no time and opportunity to chase the dollars as they do now. I did not see a single overweight person in 1968 other than a few ethnic Chinese merchants in the Cho Lon area. The vast majority then subsisted at near or on starvation diet.
Per the World Bank data posted on line, Vietnam GNI was 208 billion in 1995. In 2022 the GNI stood at 1.06 trillion. There is no data available for 1968 but keep it in mind when the war ended in 1975 the country economically collapsed. You can imagine how much has changed for economic betterment since 1968.

I have never met anyone that is overstaying a visa in Vietnam and Mark is not overstaying. Everyone I meet has permission to be in Vietnam.
If you are a rule follower, you should only follow the official rules to stay in a country. That is what I recommend (and that is what Mark has done).
But if you ever fall in love with a country and want to stay ... ask a few expats off camera how they stay in a country without overstaying their visa.

One, I don’t want to disrupt the lives of older people who are happily living in a country somewhere by publicly sharing controversial solutions that could get shut down if they became widely known because of me.
Two, I don’t want to publicly encourage a large number of people to use the same controversial solutions ... it might embarrass officials and place me on a shit list.
Instead, do exploratory visits, ask ex-pats questions off-camera, decide where you want to live and pick the best way for you personally to make that happen.

a couple notes: (central VN, DN folks are the most chilled in all of VN, hence Bryan's experience of "no one angry". Also for retirees, DN's biggest drawback is the weather (dry heat) in the summer months, and can be extra raining in the 3 winter months). You can escape the heat by going up to Ba Na Hills for the day if it becomes unbearable, or fly to Nha Trang for a few days if you want to escape some extended wet spells.

If you live strictly on retirement income and not have to worry about making a living, the best place for your golden years is DaLat. It is in the mountain area and was developed by the French during their colonial occupation to be the resort town for ranking govt officials and the wealthy minority. The natural beauty is awesome. Most of all is the weather. You wouldn't see a single A/C unit in the entire town. It is like living in air-conditioned environment year round. It is very quiet unlike Saigon and Hanoi. People are extra friendly and no worry about purse snatchers. It is not a place for younger crowd due to no sunbathing, so partying other than a few music festivals at Xuan Huong lake right in the city center twice to three times a year. It is a city of flowers and every other year you get to enjoy the flower festival.

If you have been around me long enough, you know Vietnam is one of my favorite countries in the world. But Vietnam has no retirement visa.
Yet, every time we visit Vietnam, we meet many older Western people who have been here for years.
Many of you asked why I didn’t ask Mark what visa he has.
Many people all over the world find ways to stay in countries they love. But if it doesn’t sound perfectly legit to me, I never promote it on my channel
      ... for two reasons.
That said ... I will be sharing more details about the various ways people are staying in Vietnam long-term as I learn more off-camera from the expats I meet here. Make sure to jump on my email list if you want to hear more controversial things that I am much more likely to share in an email after I have learned more.

    • @Explorer766
      @Explorer766 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Disagree. This picture of ceaseless anger in America "all the time for any reason" is concocted by media. I do agree there is more observable conflict in public view. And even though I know the media greatly exaggerates the problem it still creates an exaggerated view of America in my mind...and I live here!
Foreigners looking on us no doubt get the exaggerated view.
Our REAL problem is still obscured by media. Our economy...and the workd economy for that matter...is one giant Ponzi scheme.
This is not a fault of fundamental capitalism. It's plain and simple theft.
