- Gen 5 Competitive Singles is a unique metagame defined by Permanent weather effects and many powerful threats. Xatu, while not a very commonly seen Pokemon, has it's important role as the premiere Magic Bounce user in Gen 5 OU.
Xatu is the preferred choice over Espeon in the eyes of Pro players for its superior defensive typing and longevity with Roost.
Xatu is able to offer hazard protection to teammates, especially those vulnerable to Stealth Rock, and completely wall many Passive enemies like Ferrothorn, Skarmory and Gliscor.

Some will never figure out how to get Xatu in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Xatu Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Xatu Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.

Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on TH-cam. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Xatu usually runs bulky EV spreads to further take advantage of Magic Bounce. The Ferro could also be invested in Sp. Def
Max Special Attack Xatu can ohko Ferro but its not really ideal to spec in anything other than HP/DEF/SPD.
Apparently xatus dex says it sees into the future constantly and is almost appears to be frightened did it see the future in which mugulis and the other future paradox’s exist in perhaps

Xatu also happens to be one of a few Pokémon whos name begins with an X. Although he does not appear to be a pirate on the surface, the fact he carries an X-marks-the-spot in their name, and their status as a Pokémon with a prophetic nature, means that they could be useful in finding treasure. Let's hope Xatu stays safe in light of this new knowledge.
Magic Bounce is a great addition to the meta game. Xatu deserved it. Heat Wave is a bonus.

Xatu had a below average stat distribution even back in gen 2, when the power level was pretty low.

This somewhat eases the pain of the fact that Xatu's 3D model is stuck perpetually flying. Xatu. The bird pokemon partly based off a totem pole. A thing that stands. Suspended in the air without the elegance it should have. This is what sky battles did to us.
They did fix a few of these, let's hope they fix Xatu at some point

Xatu is indeed quite epic. Back in gen 5 and 6 I would sometimes try sneaky choice specs sets to punish switches out of it with hefty damage, with u-turn to dodge incoming ttars and other pursuit users.
Xatu was always my favorite Pokémon. Magic Bounce was a really great 'Risk Reward' since both Espeon and Xatu were pretty frail. You either predict your opponent going for a status/entry hazard move or you get slapped for a significant percent of your health, it really did reward smart play.
I remember if often conditioned players to click entry hazards in really unoptimal situations. A dragon dancing Salamance? Perfect time for stealth rocks.

I love Xatu, I went well out of my way to add one to my team back in Heart Gold even though he didn’t have any kind of STAB outside of Fly 😭 still loved him though. Wish he’d get a convergent species or an evolution 💚 love the green pigeon man

Xatu’s gen 5 success did indeed surprise me.
It's been a lot of fun watching your videos lately! I play competitive pokemon pretty casually, and it's been awesome to have your videos to keep up with the trends and the waxing and waning power levels of certain pokemon.
But of course, I would be remiss not to say that the physical and special split made gen 4 competitive better than gen 3. ;-)

You missed the opportunity to say "they threw xatu a worm", you know, because he's an early bird.
I ran Xatu in gen 5 OU for almost the entire generation! Dual screens, Roost and Night Shade, it was a really good support mon. Its biggest problem is Tyranitar, Pursuit wears it down very fast and TTar could even setup as Xatu fled the field. Really fun Pokemon, the power level feels just about right for it.

Yarp xatu is ever goated at the battle factory too. Not for magic bounce unfortunately it’s just pretty good at level 50 rentals. Wish gen 5 had rentals so much, I love playing with rental pokémon.
I used Xatu with much success to get Ho-oh in Colosseum in Mt. Battle pairing it with a Slaking. It would use skill swap to free up Slaking and was the only mon that could learn that and is immune to Earthquake. Good times...

6:23 You could also add the fact that Excadrill can ignore Xatu's Magic Bounce thanks to Mold Breaker and use Stealth Rocks freely against it. Truly an awful matchup for Xatu

I can't believe Iron Mugulis managed to breed with a ditto and distribute itself into so many people's homes. If only we had Xatu's "Magic Bounce" to protect us from any of its hazards.

Xatu is my favorite Flying bird Pokemon and I wish it and the other Gen 2 birds (Noctowl, Delibird) got more love. I think an evolution for each of them would be fantastic.

That's because Xatu didn't come out until gen 2 where Venomoth had its psychic typing replaced by steel.

If xatu is the better magic bounce user, what is espeon doing in OU? Consdering you mentioned how its threatened by tyranitar and isnt good as an offensive psychic type
From what I can tell by its smogon analysis, it's one of those "ou by technicality" mons.
Some Pokemon are stuck in higher tiers even if they are not that good because new players keep using them. Don't know if that is the deal with Espeon, haven't played 5 OU.
But early bird is such a good ability
Xatu needs a stat buff maybe make it’s speed and special attack better? I don’t know but it deserves something!
A third stage evolution in a future game / generation may just be what it needs to keep up with power creep.
