  • After moving house and finally settling in. I'm getting back to business. Here is my repair attempt of a faulty Airport express I picked up from ebay. I hopefully want to use the Airplay feature on this to get music to the Kitchen.

I'm having the exact same issue in 2022 and your video just pointed me in the right direction. Mine does multiple flashes, wants to start up but apparently can't. The two caps have minor bulging so I'm going to start by exchanging those and we'll see. Thanks for making this video!

Excellent. After 13 years mine broke in the described way. Opening up the device is the hardest part. 2 new capacitors and all up and running again. Thanks for great explanation and video. Up cycling is so satisfying.

Glad to help. I actually have plans for another one of these that I took apart years ago. Video of that coming soon.

Opening the ultrasonically welded housing parts is the difficult part. I used milly putty to bring it back to a nice one piece part.

Thanks for the repair video…i wish i hadn't thrown away my broken AE a year ago. A tip cracking the glued plastic case open is to USE A PLASTIC CLAMP WORKING YOUR WAY AROUND THE CASE…TURN IT UNTIL YOU HEAR THE GLUE/PLASTIC POP/CRACK….that will get it open and then you can glue it back together without wrecking the case. Works on all power supplies/glued cases.
    Thanks for the demo...

Thanks. Replacing the capacitors on the Power supply Board repaired my Airport express. I used a cutter knife and a bit of time to open the housing, which made gluing the housing back together easier.

Many thanks! Mine had exactly the same capacitors blown out. Replaced them with heavier duty ones (25 V) to diminish risk of blowing out again. The soldering took some effort, but I pulled it off. Success, it works again! This gives me great pleasure.

Many thanks for this! Seems there are a few hacks for replacing the entire supply, but this was the first one I'd come across that repaired the fault directly. Managed to get a cheap broken unit resurrected for a few cents using this info :)

Yeah these old AE with the HP jack were super handy. Way ahead of their time. I remeber my roomie and I in college being able to easily change change the music in our Pad, and we had decent I turned throughout the house before most of my pleb classmates.

This MATT is hidden FOR A REASON!
My friend just followed his replacement and improvised with a 220 instead of 2 capacitors of 105 each.
I wish I could send Matt my prayers - because I cannot, I continue to pray for his good sake.
The reason that is still not recognised by my mac Airport Utility is with the Mac version (iphone version).
After I use a Windows utility or get Mac/iPhone to see it, I will every day pray for your health, dear Matt!
Because my Airport Express now lights as a new one.

thank you very much. This is exactly what I am looking for. My device has broken yesterday. Same diagnosis. After plugin back green flash and then nothing. So, I am going to do my homework like you did. Hopefully same capacitors replacement with successful result. But first of all I'll crack the box. Bummer

Good video. If you want to make the result look a little nicer, you can close up the seam with a small amount of Bondo (the same stuff used for quick repairs to car bodies) and then paint it white (and probably a clear-coat to get the gloss right.) It probably won't match Apple's finish, but you won't have an ugly gash down the center.

don't dremel...do what Courtland Kertetter says with clamping. I replaced the same two capacitors and worked like a charm with little or no damage to Airport Express...Thanks!

I know this is an old video but still useful. my device runs hot suspect caps may need replacing.

Opening a case like this should not destroy it when you know how. This is the type you have to crack open cause there is a bit of glue in the groove.
You only have to take a large but slim flat screwdriver and knock on the groove with a hammer such a way to crack open the groove-glued.
    Then, ply appart.
I did so many times (small black psu, modem, remote, etc.)
Be patient, secure the device not to move, watch your fingers.
    It saves the box.

Nice one. If that doesn’t work there are tutorials to replace the power section. The wifi extender and airplay function is still useful even now.

@@wellhiddenmatt I already have 3 airport extremes from CEX between £8 and £12 each . They are still perfect extenders for my house , WiFi everywhere . This , if it gets mended , is for a printer . May as well get another for the stereo from CEX for £5 too . Thanks , in advance , for the help .

you can open the box if you hit it harder and repeatedly across the joint line with a rigid and thin object (a wrench)

Squeezing it in a vice worked well for me.

Where did u bought the replacement capacitors from and what is the exact volts or other numbers on the capacitor thanks

    • @wellhiddenmatt
      @wellhiddenmatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi there, you can buy capacitors from any electrical wholesale shop. In the UK CPC Farnell or RS components are the usual. Or from eBay. Good quality capacitor makes are rubycon, nichicon or Panasonic.
For the voltage and capacitance it’s written on the side you can always go with a higher voltage NEVER lower. And it’s also important that the capacitance is also the same.

Apple really did design the original Airport Express to be recycled when they die. What are the parts worth in that thing? Less than £10 I reckon. They still make the best consumer wifi gear though.
