Spearfishing Float Setup

I have been asked quite often about my spearfishing float setup, so thought i would put up a short video just to show what i do. This is just what works for me and no doubt other people will have different ideas.
the float line is PVC tube; i fill the ends with bathroom sealant and then fold and tape the end over.
The PVC tube avoids tangling and does actually float which is perfect when in amongst the weed.
Carrying a VHF and EPIRB might seem excessive, but we get some pretty strong tides and i like to get out and swim in them, so it makes sense to me. VHF range from in the water would be very limited though, but there are usually fishing boats around and the EPIRB would hopefully get the coastguards attention... I already have the EPIRB and VHF for other boat/surfski hobbies so it costs nothing to use them here.

Nice job adding the 3M reflective tape to the sides of your Guardian float for enhanced visibility. I have the Guardian and considering adding an LED strobe to the top of my dive flag staff. Cheers, --> #SeattleRingHunter

Thanks, its a good float. I use a slightly smaller one these days - the Beauchat Argo i think its called. does the same but fits in the car better :)

Great video man! quick question: is this model of Beuchat good for swims of 1km before spearfishing? can we get on it and use it kinda like a boat while finning down?

I have a very similar setup with a guardian, vhf, beacon etc. I use a divers smb reel for the line. I also have a c-tug kayak trolley to cart all this stuff to the beach which collapses down and comes onto the float with me.
However, I am looking to scale down my gear for those times where there is a more of a hike to the mark. Have you made any changes to your setup since you posted this video? Does the guardian always come out with you?

This is the setup that i used for pretty much all spearfishing or scalloping over he last few years. It can all be carried using the rucksack type straps, so worked well for me. Actually i have just sold it as i am moving more to boat-based dives and more free diving, less spearing. i think that setup was perfect for me and didn't have any changes lined up.

its about 20 metres altogether, but it depends on what depth you will be diving. its rare to go more than 14m in guernsey waters because the tide gets strong in the deeper water.

if i want to anchor then i use a small folding anchor about 1kg but usually i clip into a loop on my weight belt.
