  • It's easy to forget what it was like to first start out spearfishing and you can take seemingly simple things for common knowledge. In this video we look at the most basic spearfishing rig which is good enough to start your journey all the way through to massive fish, yes even black marlin have been landed on this simple rig. Where do you store your fish when you're in the water? I also go through two methods of holding on to your catch, each with pros and cons. I hope you got something out of this video - if you did, please hit that subscribe button 🙌

    Excellent video. I've been freediving/spearfishing since 1983 and I still use a float line and float. Also much quicker to reload than a reel gun setup. For bluewater hunting I use a breakaway system.

    • @DanielMann

      Definitely quicker if a large fish has taken line out of the reel. I tend to use whichever setup is best suited for the style of diving I'm doing.

    This was my rigging for the past 25 years (T-Bar on the float, not the Speed Spike). Then , about a month ago, I bought a new roller gun at RabiTech in Cape Town. Louis suggested to remove clip from the gun and attach it to the float-line rather than the gun. Just put a Loop of Dacron on each gun. This way you not only save on clips, but your float can now attach to any other float line in a flash. Also allows my Reel Guns to not have this long metal clip dangling under it when I disconnect the float in the seaweed/bamboo.
    Makes a lot of sense and now all my guns have a loop on the grip and the clip is on my float line. It also allows to clip the float on my drop weights....

    I haven't dove in a long time. We used to have something like a 3/16tgs of an inch, or ¼" safety pin looking thing. It clipped on your belt, and you would open it similar to a safety pin, slide the fish on gills first, and clip it back. We had great white where I dove, and elephant Seals, so would have a boogey board with rigging for line to dive down and tie to a rock, and a place to hook a stringer, or a goody bag, good for abalone. I later got a float that is a sewn cover for a smallish tire inner tube. Unzip it for lots of room, CO fusing to a predator.

    I use a T-string around my waist, my float isn't attached to me but I tend not to wander off too far from it, a friend suggested I attach it to my waist using soft bungee elastic, I still haven't tried the floatline to speargun connection, I'm guessing it will tangle too much...

    Im a new spearo. Been running some float rope with my buoy on one end, then a U-bolt on the other end. And my catch bag clips on underneath my buoy. I like it because i can easily hitch the bolt under my weight belt when i swim to the next reef, then i simply drop it like a little anchor. The fish are safe and secure in the catch bag. Plus its hi vis yellow and i can find it. Maybe i need another line for the gun incase the kings swim by lol.

    monofilament stringer sounds good. Thats all i could think about with using a stringer in the gulf of mexico. Bull sharks, hammerheads, tigersharks, definitely not something I would want a strong connection to hahaha

  • @mikefue9597
    @mikefue9597 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Little advice, sometimes tiny things matter A LOT.
    If you use fishstringer, PLEASE put a swiwel at the start of it where you connect the entire stringer to a buoy.
    Why do you need swiwel?
    - fish on the stringer tend to rotate the line along its axis either by hydronamic forces when swimming or half alive fish that still tries to swim.
    First thing it makes it harder to put fish on stringer later as it gets messier and mdore crumped or the mono can literally break due to forces.
    We have seen on so many ocasions when the letter happens... and it wasnt a mooray eel death spiral, just sheer hydronamic spiraling of bunch of fish.
    Swiwel just makes it supear neat in long run.

    How did you get over the fear of sharks? I'm from Brisbane, but have just moved down to Sydney and am currently starting my journey into spearfishing. I haven't dived around Brissy in years and only ever encountered Bull sharks while kayak fishing. It's always been a bit of a fear of mine and I'm just not sure why!
    Currently south of Perth for the next couple of months for work and brought my mask and fins for when I get some time to go for a bit of a look around. Still though, because it's been so long, I just can't help hesitate when getting in the water.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen those a lot. Do the fish spoil on long swims? Here it's common for me to be in the drink for 4hours and if it was baking on top in the sun they would be going off for sure.

    • @ioijiopjkiopjkp
      @ioijiopjkiopjkp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DanielMann Yea 4 hours would definitely be too long out of water. You can put ice into some float boats but it gets heavy quick. Still better to have a shorter dive with a float boat than having your dive ruined by sharks.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would probably use a drop weight to anchor my float and then use a reel gun. However to use a float you can make it easier by gathering it up in a coil on the surface before you dive. The float stays right next to you and then when you dive the rope follows you down, much less drag.

      For 99% of spearfishing not really necessary.

    Do you double or single wrap your shooting line?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the time single wrap.

    Hi! I want to get into spearfishing but the water in my area is very murky, around 30cm - 1m visibility. Is it possible to soearfish in this kind of water?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  ปีที่แล้ว

      This but it is difficult and you need a very short speargun.

    • @MIXIX333v2

    Does keeping the fish in the water on a stringer unnecessarily bring sharks in to inspect? I live on the pacific coast of California.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fish struggling and vibrating sounds will attract sharks more so than fish on a stringer in my experience.

    Hey Daniel, im new to spearfishing and a bit unsure wether to attach my speargun only to my float or to attach my float to me and then my speargun to me aswell. If you have time to answer, ill appreciate it alot!

      Never attach anything to you! Keep it all like on this video and you’ll be safe and ready to tackle almost any fish.

      @@DanielMann In Norway it's normal practice to attach yourself to the float. Lots of reasons for this, one of them being, you can drop your belt and pull it back up by the floatline. But we do have a quick release on the belt so we can unhook it pretty fast. Shooting big prey like halibut, your setup is preferred, so you dont get pulled after the fish. th-cam.com/video/wRHuZHmJM3A/w-d-xo.html
