why nursing sign on bonuses are a bad idea

  • I took a $10,000 sign on bonus and immediately regretted it. There is a reason why employers offer sign on bonuses! Here are my reasons why they’re a terrible idea.
What are your experiences with sign on bonuses?
0:42: sign on bonuses & contracts
    1:50: high nurse turnover rate
    2:37: unsafe staffing
3:26: my experience at a toxic job

Invest the sign on bonus. You earn $ off it and if you need to refund it you have it there ready.

Investments carry risk. The likelihood that all the money will be there when you need it decreases or increases depending on what you pick.

I love how honest you are. That initial money is just to hold onto you for their personal gain.

Most hospitals in my area offer a sign on bonus. It seems to be a competition. The hospital I’m working at now is pretty laid back compared to my last job. I wish I had went for the sign on bonus.

You nailed it! Yes I turned down a scholarship when I was in nursing school because they were going to try and stick me on a unit that would have been best for them. Yes run…nothing is ever easy or free!

Your hospital reminds me of this very famous medical center in Northern California, highest paying hospital in the entire country, but they just couldn’t hold on to their staff, constant turnover, because the bullying was so toxic AF, especially by assistant patient care managers, nurses would be writing each other up, reporting one another to HR, openly passing nasty comments about their coworkers in front of patients. And to think this was a top 10 medical center.

Hi Safiya! Yes, I have to admit, I signed a contract for a sign-on bonus with a LTC facility. I knew it was a trap however, I do want to acquire some experience in LTC. This will open up tons of avenue for me so that’s the only reason I chose to accept it. I wish I had watched this beforehand because I didn’t know if I leave, there would be repercussions. Thanks again for this video! Oh new subbie too!

It’s definitely a trap, I’m a new nurse and I regret taking my sign on bonus.

Amazon gave me 10 k sign on ... and they fired me in 3 weeks. They said bc I worked for another company I couldn't work for them.. so now they want 6,800 back.. I'm going to let it go collections! Maybe pay it off in 5 years from now .. maybe 10 .. maybe never ... what will they do to me if I don't pay it back .

Turns out Amazon can't collect on a job sign on bonus. All they can do is add it to ur taxes! Paying taxes on it is cheaper then giving it back!!!!! O one more thing! I can not work for Amazon anymore!!! Fine by me!

What about the international RNs? They won't be able to step in the US unless they are sponsored and sign 3 years contract with the hospitals beforehand. ☹

    • @safiyamarz
      @safiyamarz  ปีที่แล้ว

that’s the only thing :/ I’ve worked with a lot of international nurses and they’ve all told me they’re required to stay for 3 years. it’s a great opportunity though. and the years will pass anyways!

Omg I seen that select speciality hospital in my area in nj and it looked very inviting because they do student loan forgiveness, 10k sign on, 401k, tuition reimbursement etc but I heard some horror stories

Or worse, they make new grads pay a fee if they break contract. And it doesn’t come from a sign on bonus, but from your own pockets.

Can I have no contract for a nursing residency program if I don't receive the sign-on bonus? I don't need that bonus but, I heard nursing residency programs mostly have 2year contracts.
