The 80s did fine with him, but when the 90s came along, several people chose Disney over his films the best when it came 2 box office records. I remember his movies by memory than Disney movies. I will never forget them, especially All Dogs Go To Heaven. He started a franchise with them and still inspires people to this day.
I truly wish he could be brought back to animation. There are WAY too many CG films these days and hand-drawn films usually wind up as direct-to-video or made-for-TV. We need someone like him to bring back hand-drawn animation to movie theaters.

You know Don would have returned to Disney but not in their feature film animation division but in their TV animation division along with all the artists and animators of the Disney Renaissance and even before that (if they are still living) to work on Disney's TV cartoons. It may be a little expensive but since Disney's overseas animation studios are kaput maybe it'll be the only way they can still work if Hand Drawn animation isn't dominating the big screen!
I think the older stuff definitely looks kind of dated up until the stuff they made during the disney renaissance. I think Bluth's style is sorta more 'consistent' (though that may not be a good thing depending on how you look at it, some disney movies are more stylized than others, looking at you Hercules...) and altogether kinda timeless.
They were for the quality of Disney's animation. Look at "101 Dalmatian", "Sword in the Stone", "The Jungle Book". The animation quality was waaay behind what Disney could offer in 1950s.
You're partially right, Don Bluth is stiil regarded as one of the most famous animators ever. Granted, he had a string of critical and financial "faliures" (I disagree) in the early 1990s. But he came back strong in 1997 with "Anastasia!" Yeah, any 2D animation that's done nowadays is either Flash or "Amerime." RARELY do we get pure Traditional Animation anymore, and that SUCKS! Still, I don't think it's the end of the road for Traditional Animation. I think it'll make a comeback.
Last Year, I talked to John Pomeroy about the urban legend of Daphne being modeled after Playboy pictures. He denied those claims and said that the real inspiration for her design came from some of the skimpy female costumes being used at the community theater Don Bluth was working at.
Beautifully done. I love love LOVE Don Bluth. Space Ace and Time Warp are my favorites. And Nimh is one of the best film ever made. Love the flying dreams Lullaby in that movie.

Last I checked it was mainly E.T. that nearly destroyed the video gaming industry. Because of the over hype, hard difficulty, and over population of a unwanted video game. Thus resulting in some of these Atari games buried in New Mexico. Now Pac man probably was not the best then, but it's a classic that's been rebooted multiple times, fixed up, and well beloved by gamers. Unlike the spawn Satan explained above known as E.T.
+Saro3964 It wasn't. First off, the crash was a uniquely American phenomenon. Europe and Asia were largely unaffected it by it. Secondly, the crash itself is actually more complex than most tend to describe. Seriously, look it up if you don't believe me.
Dragons Lair is one of my favorite games of all time and one of the first animated games I ever saw. Despite being a little kid, I managed to drop a lot of quarters in that game. I guess I have my parents to thank for that.
Its funny how Dragon's Lair got its own series produced by Hanna-Barbera, same with Space Ace. Okay, technically those shows were under the "Ruby-Spears Production" name back in the 1980s and I think the Space Ace Cartoon section was part of the Saturday Super-cade Block also back in the 1980s, but you get what I Mean by that by the time anyone's reading this comment right now.

Whenever you were talking about "The Videogame Crash of 1983" I 100% bet you forgot that your video was about Don Bluth. Also it's so funny the way you put funeral music in the background of the audio.
I remember the rumors of a secret Wizard's lair level in Dragon's Lair , supposedly you could access it only on the hard difficulty level and you had to do a particular move at a specific time in a certain room to uncover it, you would then face off with Mordroc . The rumors were unfounded but circa 1983 when DL was released it became a sort of mini legend people would obsess over . I'm thinking the change guy who worked in the arcade spread the rumor so people would keep on dropping money into the machine on the hard setting and losing all their change in the process in the hopes they could see the secret room . Also recall reading in an old videogame magazine from the 80s how DL 2 was supposed to be a way more epic experience than what we eventually received . You were supposed to fight Blackbeard and all manner of bad guys from the past/ future , the project was very ambitious but they ran out of funding so everything was scaled back . Another thing i wish came to fruition was what was going to be the spiritual sequel to Space Ace, Sea Beast , a game that was supposed to have, obviously, an aquatic theme instead of an outer space one , would have loved to see that game become reality . Man Anastasia was almost a perfect film in my Opinion. Glade it made it high on the list. lol If it wasn't for the villains in the film it would of been perfect. If I could completely edit them out of the film, I would be so happy.
What a legend! I was lucky... I had a friend who's dad repaired video games to sell. He essentially had an arcade in his house, including Dragon's Lair. LOVED it and got to play for free .
gotta admit, i never got to play it cuz it was an expensive machine, but when i was kid growing up on the sunny essex southend seafront, out of every game i ever walked past, dragons lair is the one that always caught my attention, i never saw it played, and i never got to play it, so i never knew that it was just a simple choose ya own adventure dvd type game, all i knew back then was that it looked fucking amazing!!!, and it still rocks. theres something about hand animated games that are amazing. i know its not don bluth, but look at broken sword 1 and 2, and then compare them with their own remakes and 3d sequels, they dont have the charm of the hand animated originals. the remakes failed by making the extra bits they put in for nicole, in 3d, and making it look hand drawn. but you can so tell its not hand drawn and it sticks out too much. if they remade dragons lair and space ace in flash or something, or in 3d it would just wreck it. the reason they have that wow factor, is because you know how much work animating by hand as smooth and fluid as that, takes a shit ton of work, and you can feel every bit of blood sweat and tears that went into animating these games when you watch them....all these years later ive still yet to play them, the proper ones mind you, not those pixelated snes remakes they did so as to fit the animation onto the smaller memery capable home consoles. i know those were hand animated too, but its just not the same as something that looks like it would be just as at home on a 20 foot high cinema screen as it is in an arcade cabinet. i wish more hand animated games like this were made these days, with the mobile games industry booming, theres defo a place for new stuff like this.
Great documentary with vintage footage. One thing I cannot agree with is how many associated the video console crash as a video arcade crash. Arcades were still going strong during this time, even though companies were going bankrupt. Chuck E Cheese was big and still making money, games like UN Squadron, Street Fighter 2 (well before Mortal Combat), and Pit Fighter had lines to play them. Even Grocery stores and MiniMarts like 7-11 had 1 to 2 arcade games available.
I remember seeing The Secret of NIMH in theater. Three years before I had read a book called Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. I wanted to read it because it came out tue the year I was born, 1971. Coincidentally it also started my mission to read ALL the Newbery books, the top honor for young adult books given once a year. I was so moved by the book that I was telling everyone about it, including my Cub Scout den mother. When in 82 my den mother saw the trailer for the Secret, she recognized the story. Although my birthday isn't until October, and my family was getting ready to move to another state, my den mother took me and my mom and sister to see it. None of them seemed to think much of the movie, but it carved itself into my soul. For the next year I annoyed everyone by bringing it up when ever I had a chance. To this day, even though I'll be 50, the mere thought of it brings sentimental tears. My current wife loves to hear me sing Flying Dreams.
I think Don Bluth is underrated, he is a very talented guy almost as good as Walt Disney I miss classic animation, now in these days almost everything is squared flash
I played all three of these games on PC. Dragon's Lair was a real challenge the first time I played it, it took me almost 2 hours to beat it, the more I played it, it got easier, but not so easy that it loses its fun. Dragon's Liar 2 was really hard because of having to collect all the treasures as well as making the right moves at the right time, but I beat it in about an hour, Space Ace was really easy, but still fun, beat it in about 15 minutes.
Yes its true that both Nintendo and Sega had their own home platforms for the average consumer but another reason why DL2 failed in '91 was because the idea of a another animated video game release was already done 8 years before. Another reason is - DL1, Space Ace, and DL2 are all linear game play meaning you couldn't freely move Dirk around to explore the different levels. Game technology had significantly progressed by 1991 making the Dragon's Lair games and Space Ace a thing of the past. - I still love those games regardless.
Mad respect to Don Bluth. His persistence at doing animation was a goddamn adventure.
He was upset with Disney who wanted to make more live action because they had a belief kids thought Disney was for kiddies.

i find it very nice of you to say that don bluth in a way indirectly helped disney become what it is today and i very much admire him more then ever right now, not only because of the movies he's made that i enjoyed in my childhood but because he indirectly helped disney become what it is today, without the both of them i would never have had all those wonderful movies i grew up with, heck i wouldnt even have my favorite game kingdom hearts

Man Anastasia was almost a perfect film in my Opinion. Glade it made it high on the list. lol If it wasn't for the villains in the film it would of been perfect. If I could completely edit them out of the film, I would be so happy.

I was lucky... I had a friend who's dad repaired video games to sell. He essentially had an arcade in his house, including Dragon's Lair. LOVED it and got to play for free .
Don and Gary will develop the characters as will make the princess more developed than her game counterpart as looking forward for the feature film.
Dragon's Lair always had the flashes and I was on a college campus at the time so we must have gotten it right away.
I saw old footage, it was hard to tell but I didn't remember seeing flashes

gotta admit, i never got to play it cuz it was an expensive machine, but when i was kid growing up on the sunny essex southend seafront, out of every game i ever walked past, dragons lair is the one that always caught my attention, i never saw it played, and i never got to play it, so i never knew that it was just a simple choose ya own adventure dvd type game, all i knew back then was that it looked fucking amazing!!!, and it still rocks. theres something about hand animated games that are amazing. i know its not don bluth, but look at broken sword 1 and 2, and then compare them with their own remakes and 3d sequels, they dont have the charm of the hand animated originals. the remakes failed by making the extra bits they put in for nicole, in 3d, and making it look hand drawn. but you can so tell its not hand drawn and it sticks out too much. if they remade dragons lair and space ace in flash or something, or in 3d it would just wreck it. the reason they have that wow factor, is because you know how much work animating by hand as smooth and fluid as that, takes a shit ton of work, and you can feel every bit of blood sweat and tears that went into animating these games when you watch them....all these years later ive still yet to play them, the proper ones mind you, not those pixelated snes remakes they did so as to fit the animation onto the smaller memery capable home consoles. i know those were hand animated too, but its just not the same as something that looks like it would be just as at home on a 20 foot high cinema screen as it is in an arcade cabinet. i wish more hand animated games like this were made these days, with the mobile games industry booming, theres defo a place for new stuff like this.

One thing I cannot agree with is how many associated the video console crash as a video arcade crash.
Arcades were still going strong during this time, even though companies were going bankrupt. Chuck E Cheese was big and still making money, games like UN Squadron, Street Fighter 2 (well before Mortal Combat), and Pit Fighter had lines to play them. Even Grocery stores and MiniMarts like 7-11 had 1 to 2 arcade games available.
I agree. Since I'm both a Knuckles and a Mephiles fan-girl, and I used to have a crush on Sonic when I was a kid, I can totally agree.

I remember seeing The Secret of NIMH in theater. Three years before I had read a book called Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. I wanted to read it because it came out tue the year I was born, 1971. Coincidentally it also started my mission to read ALL the Newbery books, the top honor for young adult books given once a year. I was so moved by the book that I was telling everyone about it, including my Cub Scout den mother. When in 82 my den mother saw the trailer for the Secret, she recognized the story. Although my birthday isn't until October, and my family was getting ready to move to another state, my den mother took me and my mom and sister to see it. None of them seemed to think much of the movie, but it carved itself into my soul. For the next year I annoyed everyone by bringing it up when ever I had a chance. To this day, even though I'll be 50, the mere thought of it brings sentimental tears. My current wife loves to hear me sing Flying Dreams.
Dragonslair was ahead of it's time,and Dafney is hot for a animated character.
I think Don Bluth is underrated, he is a very talented guy almost as good as Walt Disney

I played all three of these games on PC. Dragon's Lair was a real challenge the first time I played it, it took me almost 2 hours to beat it, the more I played it, it got easier, but not so easy that it loses its fun. Dragon's Liar 2 was really hard because of having to collect all the treasures as well as making the right moves at the right time, but I beat it in about an hour, Space Ace was really easy, but still fun, beat it in about 15 minutes.

Probably not because a good 99% of that look back would be talking about the same thing the Ice Age Movies.

Yes its true that both Nintendo and Sega had their own home platforms for the average consumer but another reason why DL2 failed in '91 was because the idea of a another animated video game release was already done 8 years before. Another reason is - DL1, Space Ace, and DL2 are all linear game play meaning you couldn't freely move Dirk around to explore the different levels. Game technology had significantly progressed by 1991 making the Dragon's Lair games and Space Ace a thing of the past. - I still love those games regardless.
