Mate! this is exactly what we need, we have had the cables come off the drums far too many times when you need them to be working, I'm going to have to get some, Cheers mate 🤙🏻
Nice timing. I’m going wheeling in a few weeks. Had the winch set up for a year or so with the rope in the back. Will need to fit it this time. Have a few Gqs coming along. 😊 a simple but affective device. Keep up the good Matt. 👏👏👏
I like the way it prevents you from going past the point of minimum winds, all the way to the bolt, i currently only have the visual indicator of a rope sheath to let me know I'm near the end, but you can't see that in the car.
Normally the winch rope has an eyelet at the end of the rope. And it is bolted to the side of the winch drum with a tiny bolt or screw. Then you winch in to spool the rope onto the drum. The bolt and eyelet have no structural integrity or strength, its purely so the rope can be spooled onto the winch, which is why you have to leave atleast one wrap on the drum for the winch to actually hold. Failing that, if your screw is rusted out, u can use a cable tie to hold the rope to the drum while you spool on the first wrap of rope to the winch drum. This device stops the rope from completely coming off the drum, which could potentially happen if your at your winch ropes length and just have the one wrap on the drum. If you roll back for what ever reason the rope could come off the drum, or even if ur spooling out too much rope, past the recommended one wrap, you could potentially have the rope fall off the winch drum. Remember to always spool your rope on under the drum, not over the top.
Nice but i just use black Gorilla tape for 12 bucks. After pulling off the bolt loop on my Power Wagon's factory steel cable, i just taped the frayed cable end to my winch drum and it's never come loose yet. And if it works that good on a steel line, i reckon it would work even better on a synthetic rope.
Yes, I don't know why this type of "unwinding limiter" isn't on every synthetic loaded drum... Seen it years ago, would definitely suggest as an idiot proof solution to over unwinding. Simple - just a simple webbing strop - even a simple webbing loop (with the rope laid "just-right") does the job.
Hey Matty do you know if anyone makes a plastic device with a bunch of S turns and a hole in it so you could wrap your rope around something, lock it on to itself then put your hook through the hole?
@@MadMatt4WD Have you seen 'bleepin Jeeps freedom rope'? Its been woven to have holes in it just like a soft shackle that you can put the end thu and get various loops of about two, four and eight feet. Its a great idea, but I already have Warn Spydura rope, and thought if there was an attachment made that would grip the rope you basically do the same thing. I have seen small light duty ones used in climbing. Maybe someday I'll weld a bunch of 3/4 SS pipe elbows sliced in half that will accomplish that S friction attachment.
Been winching for many years and never had a rope come off. All I do is zip tie the tag end onto the drum and do one full drum spool load under hand pressure then the rest of the rope under load. Simples.
Yes and that works fine. The idea of this is to let you know when you’ve reached the end of the rope. Yours will pull of the drum if you just keep spooling out line.
Thankyou, its only 1year old now and had to pull it apart to regrease it all as it some how got some water in it. Might look into a plasma rope and fairlead to save some weight.
I don’t use wire anymore. If you go to the A247 website and use the code MadMatt you get a discount on anything in store. They have a number of cable and fairlead solutions. Link in description of video
@@MadMatt4WD Hi Matt, 3 years late to the party, but along the same lines. Im changing over from cable to synthetic as well. What are your thoughts on rollers for synthetic winch rope?
Hmmm...ok...but I simple carry enough strap length that I never get down to too few wraps of the cable on the drum to hold it. Neat idea but I'm too cheap to spend that much on a little piece of nylon.
And if I was worried about price I wouldn’t wheel a hemi🤣 Not a bad idea though, could get the local ladies at the country women’s association to sew a few hundred up for me🤘🤘
@@longy6612 When you get to the end of the rope, the rope will slip. There needs to be a number of lays to have sufficient friction to winch off. That's, where the plasma lock comes in it, stops to many lays coming off. It doesn't stop the rope from slipping the fact there are enough lays still on the drum stop the slip .

@@ShoeysAdventures Fantastic.
For those in the U.S., Bubba Rope makes one called "Grabber" for about 11USD on Summit Racing.
Wow I just stripped my winch bolt hole and I was begging to worry until I saw this video 👍👍
That plasma lock is ingenious - so simple, but effective ! Thanks for showing.
It's astounding that so many synth winches don't have holes big enough to fit the bloody rope through! This is the way forward :)
Thanks just what i needed as the retaining lug cuts into the winch rope under load. cheers Phil
Glad it helped
Great idea Mat, have seen it done with a loop of winch rope but that little gizmo is much neater.
Agree
Thank you, Matt. I think it's a great idea. Simple ideas are often the best ones. I've been watching you for a while now do you miss your 80 series.

@@MadMatt4WD Ok I haven't seen thet do you have a link for the 80 series race car.
Great to know about this device, I’d been having issues with my synthetic line staying attached to the drum. Thank You!!!

Great bit of kit there Matt! :)
Thanks Matt mine arrived yesterday and just fitted it simple and effective.
It's a nice bit of gear ay.

Have fun and make sure to look after the gqs. They talk tough but need a lot of hand holding.

Will do. 😁 you can chose your friends but you can’t choose there cars. Cheers
A bit of 3M double-sided tape will hold it to the drum. Bubba rope in the USA sales a version of this called The Gripper.

Thank you! Cheers!
Informative video Matt. Thanks for the tip and great instructions.
Any time!

So how is the cord normally loaded onto a drum? I have not unwound mine to see as yet and not seen any videos to show me.
Usually there’s a little tag on the end of the rope that a screw goes through.

Did U get it for free?
A mate in the UK wanted me to try them so he sent it to me so yes free but not from Red Winch. Do you have an issue with me getting things for free?
Aren’t you afraid of snakes? I thought I saw one behind you. Your Chauffeur, J Bruce, Hollywood North 🇨🇦
Not too worried about snakes. They tend to go away when we’re around.
$30 for a piece of webbing? The UK price of £9.59 makes more sense, but still... take a sewing machine and make your own.

Red Winch supply the British army so we can assume they make good stuff.
I think that a fair call
10x quicker to just do a clove hitch knot
Except it slips as there’s not enough rope on the drum to provide friction.
