- My friend @DownieLive and I spent 46 hours on the Amtrak Empire Builder in Business Class from Chicago to Seattle. On this route, we crossed 7 states and were able to see much of the northern part of the United States. Traveling by train in the United States is enjoyable and you get to see more of the hidden gems of this great country vs. flying.

Did this trip several years ago. Rode Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle. After a few days in Seattle rode Coast Starlight down to Los Angeles. Spent day in LA then rode Sunset Limited to Phoenix. Was an awesome experience! Thanks for this video. More people should experience the train.
As a railfan, I noticed Amtrak 145 at 0:58, that’s lucky to be able to be that close to a heritage unit. Great video!

I was born in Chicago. I was 11 months old the first time I traveled to Los Angeles via the Super Chief. I was six the next time we traveled from Chicago to L.A. via the Super Chief. That one I vividly remember!

This video is actually great for archival purposes; it's one of the last ones taken before the suspension, re-introduction, and menu overhaul of traditional dining on Amtrak.
I'd love to have a friend like you and Mike. You guys are so fun together. Can't wait for Part ll. I've never been on a train. Not so sure if I could do that "roomette" though. Seems a bit claustrophobic.

I have taken 2 trips on Amtrak from Kansas City to Seattle and back and 1 trip on Amtrak from Little Rock to Seattle and back. I love traveling on the train. Thanks for sharing your Amtrak adventure

Love the Empire Builder! I used to take it every winter between Chicago and Whitefish to go skiing. Last December they increased the Roomette fares 30%. Finding it hard to justify 26 hours on a train for $500!! Hope Amtrak can get their act together, it's a great way to travel. Great videos, safe travels to you guys!

Taking a train across the country is a experience everyone should do at least once. It's relaxing if you have the time.
Great video. My late-wife and I took the EB to from Seattle to Chicago and back in 2000, but we had the full bedroom and a small sleeper like you did. I got the the small one at night because I snored. The EB is a great trip and everyone should put it on the bucket list.

I did this last year and it was one of my favorite trips. It's like taking a step back in time, where the journey is part of the destination.

Loved this - the joy on your faces is a pleasure to watch! Planning on travelling to the US (from the UK) this autumn, and taking the train round the country, dropping in on friends as I go... The plan is to go from Orlando to El Paso, on to Yuma, then to Seattle & finally to Cleveland... About 7 days altogether, with a couple of nights between each leg. Can't wait!

Empire Builder, California Zephyr, Southwest Chief, Coast Starlight, Sunset Limited, Texas Eagle, City of New Orleans, Cardinal, Crescent, Capitol Limited, Lake Shore Limited, Silver Meteor... You will see urban and rural America...
Try the 5 day American Eagle trip, from NYC to L.A,or the other way round, and book a room, I don't advise traveling in coach.
I love you guys' enthusiasm! I have to do this trip.... took my only train trip as a 6 year old in 1961. NYC to Flint MI. Loved it.

I love the observation car, so much to look at and often great people. Haven't been on a train for a while but used to ride from Indy to Chicago to Albuquerque and often got a message from the Conductor about upcoming areas of interest like riding through history while meeting new people with their own stories...I go with a group of 6-18 girls ( at least once a year by car to different destinations) This year it is to Rodanthe! We have a blast, my designated duty is to identify what the locals do in their free time. Trains have been considered but go to slow! We are on year 16 this year! Thanks for sharing and look forward to next video! You and Mike have a kinship/friendship that'll live a lifetime, enjoy your adventures!

Great video! I've been on the California Zephyr, Southwest Chief, Coast Starlight, Lakeshore Limited, Silver Meteor, and all the Michigan trains....Train travel is the way to go, sleeper cars are cool....Now if you go from DC down to Florida the sleeper cars are different. They are viewliners and the top bunk has a window...we take the train from Toledo to Orlando every other year to go to Orlando and go to Walt Disney World. Well worth it, don't have to worry about checking luggage, etc.....

Around this same time frame, my fam and I were headed to Florida from Virginia to attend the Pro-Bowl via the Amtrak Auto-Train. We had one of the deluxe cabins for the 3 of us. Cozy but fun.

Ron I took the trip from Portage to save a few bucks, however the trip is very well worth. If you are going alone get a roomette or if you are taking a friend you might want to consider a viewliner deluxe sleeper with it's own toilet and shower! If you go this route make sure the shower lock opens from the inside before you shut the door. It's most embarrassing to have one's wife get the car steward to get you out. Hahahahaha!!!!!

Our family of 5 took this train from Seattle to Chicago and then onto New York. It was quite an adventure as the train was delayed 12 hours and we finally got too Chicago at 4.30 in the morning!! However, it was stunning scenery and a memorable experience!! I'm enjoying watching your videos!!

I stumbled across your and Mike's videos by mistake and have to say thank you. I also love trains, have researched the Empire Builder, and plan to do it next year. I have read that it's better do the Seattle to Chicago route as you'll go through the mountains during daylight, so would fly there from Philly. I can't wait to see part 2 of your adventure.

Taking the Empire Builder from St Paul, MN to Portland on Wednesday with my daughter for the first time!
Hey Will. Just found you and Mike and I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed watching yalls video. I live in KS but my Family is in LA and I usually travel by train when I travel home by myself. I've always traveled coach until my last trip. My daughter came with me so we got a roomette and I don't think I will travel coach anymore. Loved the Roomette and all our meals being included was awesome. Was so surprised how good the meals were. One day I will have to try the Sleeper Car.

I did the roomette once. Not bad except walking down the aisle to the washroom and showers. I know it's more expensive, but the bedroom with the toilet and shower in the room is worth it if you can afford it.

Wow that’s going to be an amazing trip Earl. You are going to enjoy it. So much nature. And the sleepers are comfortable. The train rocked me to sleep and I loved it.
You guys seemed to enjoy the trip. I took the train from Chicago to Washington DC and I loved it as I had enough time to rest and catch up on work plus the trip cost about $100.
We loved it Asuquo! So many memories that will last a lifetime from this trip. You found a great price for tickets.

I'm getting ready to make that same trip in 2 weeks, but I'll be going from Seattle to Chicago. Traveling solo and got a roomette. Staying 2 nights in Chicago and then flying back. Looking forward to my first Amtrak trip in more than 40 years.

I found your site, in watching @DownieLive. And, I'm happy to have found it. I like the concept of seeing two versions of the same journey ... good presentation.
In July, I took the Coast Starlight from San Francisco (Emeryville), to Seattle, in a Roomette. I loved it.
In your video you addressed snow. I've never lived in a snowy area, and that has been a concern of mine in planning a cross-country Amtrak journey, outside of the May-October season, when the train would be less crowded.
