Noel - Want some advice? I know you have ridden on Amtrak with your wife and kids in the roomettes and also the family rooms, but next time try getting adjoining deluxe bedrooms. There is a wall that slides open between (I believe between room B & C) that turns them into one big suite. They both have their own shower/toilet so you don’t have to go down the hall for that. Also, when it’s time to put the kids to bed, they can go to their own room and you can then close the wall between the rooms, giving you and your wife some privacy. I too have two kids and we used to do this all the time. It worked out perfectly! 😉
I've always ridden coach. The seats are fine: more comfortable and roomy than an airplane, Greyhound or local bus, and you get an electric outlet. Sleeping is what you'd expect in a chair, but I wasn't ready to spend $200 more per night for a bed. At night I listened to sleep/hypnosis meditations on a digital music player.
I tried riding coach twice on the zephyr and Texas eagle and it was so hard for me to sleep in the coach seat that I was extremely stressed and exhausted from lack of sleep over 2-3 days period. The rooms are more expensive but my neck and back is more valuable so I don’t mind splurging on a roomette once every 2 years.
Hey brother, another AWESOME video! Chicago Union Station brings back some good memories for me. And some odd ones as well. I was sitting in the waiting room getting ready to board my train back to Palm Springs, CA. and it was packed, when a group of police came through with dogs. One of their dogs alerted on a passengers bag, a dude of about 20-25 years old, and when the cop opened the bag, he LITERALLY screamed out, "G*N, G*UN, WE HAVE A G*N"! Which instantaneously created panic and chaos with everyone in the waiting area! People running in all directions, screaming and shouting. I just sat in my seat with my little dog on my lap watching it all unfold. The young man, jumped up and leapt over people and took off with the police and dogs in hot pursuit. They caught him up at street level as he tried to go out the door. Turns out, it was a very dangerous long g*n, fully loaded and chambered. It was crazy! I have so many stories about my travels on Amtrak as Ive been traveling Amtrak since the late 80s all over America. Ive traveled every route they offer except the Northeast corridor. Which is on my bucket list, especially the Acela express! Currently, ive logged around 15,000 miles on Amtrak,so far, with many more planned. Ive done it ALL on coach as well! My next trips, will all be in the sleeper car though, as im disabled now and walk with a cane.
Many people from the US, and especially from Europe just don’t appreciate how damn big the USA is. It’s insane, especially if you’re going east to west.
Wow, you went through the town I live in, Minot North Dakota. I remember having a storm like that this past summer. I wish we would have more. Amtrak is a life line for me here. I take it when I visit friends in Minneapolis. I've only done the sleeper car once but I liked it. Otherwise it's too expensive. I end up in coach and, yes, sleeping in those seats is pretty much not going to happen. I fell asleep once in them and nearly gave myself an award for that accomplishment. Still, the whole trip is worth it for the dining car alone. I love sitting with other people and talking about their lives and their destinations. It's worth every penny just for that.

Lol Havre MT was where I lived from 2007 to 2011 then moved to Minot ND where I lived from 2012 to this last December. I now live in California. So seeing a youtuber from the other side of the pond that I follow going through the places I used to live is a trip. The world is small indeed.

I did the 50 hour train ride from San Antonio Texas to NYC, with a stopover and transfer in Chicago. It was a birthday experience for myself and I went first class and it was pretty amazing. I'm not sure I'd do it again too often, but it was worth doing it at least once.
I grew up in Portage, WI, and it wasn't uncommon to hear someone who was taking the Amtrak to Chicago have their train delayed for a few hours! I bet those who lived in those small towns, like me, got really excited to see their hometown displayed for a brief moment, and remembered what kind of things happened near the train station!
I took the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago and back three times, and I loved it. I traveled coach, and your bottom does start to get a little tired after the first day, but if there isn't someone sitting beside you, you can stretch out a bit. I loved chatting with the people sitting near me and the views. So much fun. ♥️☺️
I love traveling by train although I am not a big fan of Amtrak as a company especially due to its poor management for the last 20 years, for the most part the employees are friendly and as you said the scenery is outstanding. Two other must do trips are the California Zephyr from Chicago to Northern California and the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Seattle.
@@ricardopinto243 I think the US should return to the old private rail lines system, it went well until the government substitutes plane travel and build the interstates. I think for the US private rail, private interstate highways and private airlines is a good solution. But this solution fits not everywhere, other country's have a great state owed rail that works for them.
Very enjoyable to watch. In my much younger years my mom and would take the train from Los Angeles to Chicago to visit our relatives in Michigan. Wonderful way to see the country.

I live in an Amtrak town, Bryan, Ohio, Lakeshore Limited rolls through here. I have ridden all the lines east of the Mississippi River but I fly when I go way out west. Thanks for this video of the roomette. My grandfather was Chief Mail Clerk for the New York Central from Chicago to Cleveland many years ago.

What a fantastic journey with the family absolutely wonderful to experience this all together . I have an experience with Amtrak many years ago when we took a train from El Paso to Houston overnight . Don’t remember a lot but was fun 👍 I remember the staff of Amtrak being wonderful and it made our trip . One thing i love is the Americans and hospitality as it’s just outstanding and warmth fills you 👍

Excellent report. I have ridden the train both ways between Chicago and Seattle several times, and have enjoyed it each time. Its the best way to see some of the real USA, without actually getting out and walking about. Well done!
The Pacific Northwest is one of the most scenic parts of the USA. That train journey looked great, i think i'll have to give it a try one day! Great video!
I've taken the Empire Builder from Minneapolis to Seattle on a backpacking trip. I rode coach for the entire journey. Not bad overall, I knew going into it that the seats wouldn't be the best, I would compare it to a business class seat. Bring food as the café is expensive and the restaurant is not available to coach passengers. Bring a book, cell service is limited. I spent a lot of time in the observation car, and left my bag behind my seat.
Aw, no idea you were in the MSP area recently! Hope you enjoyed it. When I went to school at the University of North Dakota, I would take the Builder from Grand Forks to Minneapolis-St. Paul several times a year, until I got my car. An alright experience, great view when the sun came up.
Visited twice on my recent trip! Spent a day there and visited Mall of America, then flew to SFO and passed back through eventually on the Empire Builder. Absolutely fell in love with MSP - it’s a lovely city; and one of our favourites so far!
I’ve always wanted to that after seeing the trains in Southern California. Thanks for doing this, love that you had the family with you too, the kids were awesome.
I traveled that line from Minneapolis to La Crosse through Red Wing and Winona to visit family in La Crosse when I was young. Super super cool to see it again in this video!!

Very nice video. It brought back memories from the couple times I have taken the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago. I did my trips in coach and while obviously a bedroom is more comfortable I found the coach seats quite large and with plenty of leg room. The one benefit of traveling in coach is you tend to meet more people since everyone is sitting together and in coach you will tend to hang out in the lounge more. Meeting random people and sharing this great adventure together is one of the best parts of traveling across the country by train.
I believe Paul Lucas ran into a big thunderstorm around Minot, ND when he was taking this train a few years ago. I guess that’s travel in Tornado Alley during the summer for you!
I did Chicago to Portland on the Empire Builder, Portland to Sacramento on the Coast Starlight and Sacramento back to Chicago (over the Rockies) on the California Zephyr. Don't worry about booking a sleeper, the coach seats are comfy and recline (despite what he said) Just do it it's cheap too.
The Empire Builder *is* one of Amtrak's great long distance trains... Although if you are looking for scenery, I'm actually more fond of the California Zephyr (especially between Emeryville, CA and Denver, CO, although it goes all the way to Chicago, IL) and the Coast Starlight from Seattle WA to Los Angeles, CA. The former train Westbound trip has amazing daylight crossings of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains and Colorado's Rocky Mountains. The latter has amazing views of Puget Sound, the Columbia River, the mountains of Oregon, and the California Coast. On the other hand, if you are looking for punctual schedules....ride the Tokaido Shinkansen

I've travelling on Amtrak train even before Amtrak merged private Railroad Company for over 52 years. I hopped once or twice a year acrossing in any part of USA as I love it and no matter if the train is delays or on time because trains travel is a blast with a wonderful socially different people from all over the world and a beauty by looking a view passing to different areas too.
I spent 2 weeks in America during the summer of 2018, a week in New York before getting on the overnight train to Chicago, we loved it. We took local trains and subway to Grand Central terminal, where we left NYC for Albany NY, changed onto the overnight sleeper to Chicago, even caught a few thunderstorms overnight around Buffalo and further to the west. Arrived into Chicago Union station at lunchtime. Fantastic seeing your vid, it brings it all back.
Stunning scenery. What a great trip. That food looked really good, especially the steak. That train journey beats air travel and I'd very much love to travel in America that way.
The food is shockingly good. If Amtrak had the budget for everything else like they do for food (evidently a point of consternation in Congress), they'd be the finest passenger train in existence.
The Amtrak steak is one of the best ever. I have had them numerous times. Once our train was delayed for 26 hours and I ordered steak and it tasted different. I told the dining car attendant that the steak did not taste like an Amtrak steak. She admitted that they had run out of steak and had to purchase steaks from a local supermarket in Havre, Montana. Towards the end of that trip they catered Subway onboard as the diner had run out of food.
Great vlog as always! MT looked like a background picture from a Windows 98. Lol! I like trains,and would love to take the train across the US and Canada. Come to Norway and take the train. A new thing for this year is that rails has been opend up for all. There is a UK rail co that now has the Oslo to Stavanger service. I think the sweds got Oslo-Trondheim-Bodø. Great video👍 Trains are just great. I once took the train from Agra (India) to Trivandrum (deep south). A little over 3000 km and 52 hours. I absolutely loved it and I will never forget that wonderful journey.
Noel, I'm so glad that you and the family had such a good time! Wife, kids, and I have taken the train from Seattle area to Memphis twice. Once on the Empire Builder, and another on the Coast Starlight/California Zephyr (coming out of the mountains to Denver was best view I think I've ever seen) to Chicago. Next spring, wife and I will be taking the train from Massachusetts to Seattle for our anniversary. Do you have any other possible trips on Amtrak that you would want to take? I would suggest the Coast Starlight, and taking a shorter trip on the Amtrak Cascade. It's a more "European" type train, with only one floor.

Greetings from along the route, in the Flathead Valley where Whitefish is a stop. Between Spokane and Whitefish at Trego, MT, is one of the longest tunnels in Montana at 7 miles long, and it's the second longest railroad tunnel in the USA. I ride from Whitefish, MT to Portland, OR every now and then.
my wife had always wanted to do this for years but unfortunately she passed away 3 months so she never got to do it 😔 so i hope since i have some of her ashes in a miniature bottle attached to a chain and also our wedding ring around my neck i hope to raise enough money to go do the trip so i can cross it off the list she had it’s just upsetting how expensive it is but watching your video makes me feel like we are there so thank you mate and may god bless u and ur family and also all ur subscribers
Amtrak!! I rode one of those in 1998. We went from Arkanaas to Los Angelas, CA and then to Sacremento, CA. It was an amazing trip! I love Amtrak and would love to go again someday. The scenery is breathtaking cause you go through Colorado coming back.
If you get an opportunity at some point, I'd suggest you also take the section of the Empire Builder that runs west of Spokane. The trips to Seattle and especially to Portland are gorgeous.

I took this train across America all the way to New York, I loved it and would do again. My trip started in Vancouver WA. The meals were amazing and that year was the all star baseball game so the little bar downstairs was hopping and festive.

I'm originally from Williston, ND and living in Winona, MN. The Empire Builder is super convenient. Way cheaper than taking a plane, too.

What a fantastic journey with the family absolutely wonderful to experience this all together . I have an experience with Amtrak many years ago when we took a train from El Paso to Houston overnight . Don’t remember a lot but was fun 👍 I remember the staff of Amtrak being wonderful and it made our trip . One thing i love is the Americans and hospitality as it’s just outstanding and warmth fills you 👍

Excellent report. I have ridden the train both ways between Chicago and Seattle several times, and have enjoyed it each time. Its the best way to see some of the real USA, without actually getting out and walking about. Well done!

I've taken the Empire Builder from Minneapolis to Seattle on a backpacking trip. I rode coach for the entire journey. Not bad overall, I knew going into it that the seats wouldn't be the best, I would compare it to a business class seat. Bring food as the café is expensive and the restaurant is not available to coach passengers. Bring a book, cell service is limited. I spent a lot of time in the observation car, and left my bag behind my seat.
Aw, no idea you were in the MSP area recently! Hope you enjoyed it. When I went to school at the University of North Dakota, I would take the Builder from Grand Forks to Minneapolis-St. Paul several times a year, until I got my car. An alright experience, great view when the sun came up.
Visited twice on my recent trip! Spent a day there and visited Mall of America, then flew to SFO and passed back through eventually on the Empire Builder. Absolutely fell in love with MSP - it’s a lovely city; and one of our favourites so far!

Very nice video. It brought back memories from the couple times I have taken the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago. I did my trips in coach and while obviously a bedroom is more comfortable I found the coach seats quite large and with plenty of leg room. The one benefit of traveling in coach is you tend to meet more people since everyone is sitting together and in coach you will tend to hang out in the lounge more. Meeting random people and sharing this great adventure together is one of the best parts of traveling across the country by train.
I plan do a overnight train trip this year. I’ve always wanted to take a overnight train ride. Going to go from NYC to Vegas. :)

I believe Paul Lucas ran into a big thunderstorm around Minot, ND when he was taking this train a few years ago. I guess that’s travel in Tornado Alley during the summer for you!
Your are correct
North Dakota isn't in Tornado Alley. We do commonly get strong storms though.
Tornado alley typically ends in north east Illinois in the Chicago area.

I did Chicago to Portland on the Empire Builder, Portland to Sacramento on the Coast Starlight and Sacramento back to Chicago (over the Rockies) on the California Zephyr. Don't worry about booking a sleeper, the coach seats are comfy and recline (despite what he said) Just do it it's cheap too.

The Empire Builder *is* one of Amtrak's great long distance trains...
Although if you are looking for scenery, I'm actually more fond of the California Zephyr (especially between Emeryville, CA and Denver, CO, although it goes all the way to Chicago, IL) and the Coast Starlight from Seattle WA to Los Angeles, CA. The former train Westbound trip has amazing daylight crossings of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains and Colorado's Rocky Mountains. The latter has amazing views of Puget Sound, the Columbia River, the mountains of Oregon, and the California Coast. On the other hand, if you are looking for punctual schedules....ride the Tokaido Shinkansen

I've travelling on Amtrak train even before Amtrak merged private Railroad Company for over 52 years. I hopped once or twice a year acrossing in any part of USA as I love it and no matter if the train is delays or on time because trains travel is a blast with a wonderful socially different people from all over the world and a beauty by looking a view passing to different areas too.
I spent 2 weeks in America during the summer of 2018, a week in New York before getting on the overnight train to Chicago, we loved it. We took local trains and subway to Grand Central terminal, where we left NYC for Albany NY, changed onto the overnight sleeper to Chicago, even caught a few thunderstorms overnight around Buffalo and further to the west. Arrived into Chicago Union station at lunchtime. Fantastic seeing your vid, it brings it all back.

Stunning scenery. What a great trip. That food looked really good, especially the steak. That train journey beats air travel and I'd very much love to travel in America that way.
The food is shockingly good. If Amtrak had the budget for everything else like they do for food (evidently a point of consternation in Congress), they'd be the finest passenger train in existence.
The Amtrak steak is one of the best ever. I have had them numerous times. Once our train was delayed for 26 hours and I ordered steak and it tasted different. I told the dining car attendant that the steak did not taste like an Amtrak steak. She admitted that they had run out of steak and had to purchase steaks from a local supermarket in Havre, Montana. Towards the end of that trip they catered Subway onboard as the diner had run out of food.

A new thing for this year is that rails has been opend up for all. There is a UK rail co that now has the Oslo to Stavanger service. I think the sweds got Oslo-Trondheim-Bodø. Oslo to Bergen is VY, the former NSB. Be safe, and stay safe!

Trains are just great. I once took the train from Agra (India) to Trivandrum (deep south). A little over 3000 km and 52 hours. I absolutely loved it and I will never forget that wonderful journey.
Noel, I'm so glad that you and the family had such a good time! Wife, kids, and I have taken the train from Seattle area to Memphis twice. Once on the Empire Builder, and another on the Coast Starlight/California Zephyr (coming out of the mountains to Denver was best view I think I've ever seen) to Chicago. Next spring, wife and I will be taking the train from Massachusetts to Seattle for our anniversary. Do you have any other possible trips on Amtrak that you would want to take? I would suggest the Coast Starlight, and taking a shorter trip on the Amtrak Cascade. It's a more "European" type train, with only one floor.

Greetings from along the route, in the Flathead Valley where Whitefish is a stop. Between Spokane and Whitefish at Trego, MT, is one of the longest tunnels in Montana at 7 miles long, and it's the second longest railroad tunnel in the USA. I ride from Whitefish, MT to Portland, OR every now and then.

my wife had always wanted to do this for years but unfortunately she passed away 3 months so she never got to do it 😔 so i hope since i have some of her ashes in a miniature bottle attached to a chain and also our wedding ring around my neck i hope to raise enough money to go do the trip so i can cross it off the list she had it’s just upsetting how expensive it is but watching your video makes me feel like we are there so thank you mate and may god bless u and ur family and also all ur subscribers
Great report - I travelled from Seattle to Chicago on the Empire Builder in 2010 and this brought back many happy memories!
Amtrak!! I rode one of those in 1998. We went from Arkanaas to Los Angelas, CA and then to Sacremento, CA. It was an amazing trip! I love Amtrak and would love to go again someday. The scenery is breathtaking cause you go through Colorado coming back.
If you get an opportunity at some point, I'd suggest you also take the section of the Empire Builder that runs west of Spokane. The trips to Seattle and especially to Portland are gorgeous.

I took this train across America all the way to New York, I loved it and would do again. My trip started in Vancouver WA. The meals were amazing and that year was the all star baseball game so the little bar downstairs was hopping and festive.
