All three of these guys are next level musicians. No other band sounds like Primus. They always have some quirky diminished tones or some funky wickedness going on. You have to love their level of experimentation tempered with talent and good taste.

Holy crap, I've never seen the live version of this song, so good. The way they always reel people into the music and in this one they get the claps going, it adds a little touch that makes the song extra special. Amazing performers. I get this vision that even after these guys are no longer with us, they will be performing massive shows in the afterlife, their sound waking up the deepest of sleeping spirits to add their handclaps to the percussion.

Actually that's not the Whamola. It's just an electric upright bass. The Whamola has a single string and has the "tuning" (for a lack of a better or correct term) lever on the side.

    • @karenfryberger4260
      @karenfryberger4260 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@justin is 99% correct. Les is playing an upright, 4-string (maybe 5-string?) fretless bass in this performance. Check out Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade (one of his side projects)"Whamola" - the video with 1.3 million views. You'll see It has a single string which is manipulated via a pulley-and-lever system at the top (not side). POLO - if you see this comment, take it as a serious request for a reaction!

2011, I was hitting the jam band scene. Didn’t make it to Bonaroo, but Primus is a great example of the experimentation that those bands produce.
The thing that is so amazing is that you can have 10’s of thousands of highly diverse people for days and everybody get along so well. No fights, maybe a naked guy running around through the crowd. I really love those events and artists. 🖖🏼

Les Claypool is considered one of the greatest bass players of all time, for sure. People will probably disagree with where he stands among bassists like Victor Wooten, John Paul Jones, Bootsy Collins, Jaco Pastorius, Larry Graham, Cliff Burton, Charles Mingus, Geezer Butler, Lemmy Kilmister, Geddy Lee, Tony Levin, Paul McCartney, etc. As for Primus... well, great bands are either destined to top the music charts frequently OR inspire the next generations of musicians; Primus fits the latter category, much like Frank Zappa and George Clinton did.

He was on the stage I was working just days before all that happened. Still not even sure how he got to where he was. He was in really bad shape though. Everyone has their demons. He didn't deserve what happened, but I can see how it did. Wasn't very easy to communicate with him at that time. I did get to see him play one last time. That part was still amazing. Worked his tail off to do what he was able to do. Once in a life time great, he was. I hope he found the peace he was searching for.

So the bass player question.Primus is my favorite band, Victor Wooten probably has the most raw talent but Jaco Pastorius is the G.O.A.T of bass.
Jaco popularized the fretless bass and use of harmonics on bass in the 70s. He was extremely fast Jazz player that could stop on a dime. Wooten, Claypool, Flea and countless others have credited Jaco with being an inspiration, which was on the documentary created by Metalica's bass player Robert Trujillo.
I highly recommend listening to Portrait of Tracy, Donna Lee (cover), Teen Town or Havona.
There are tons of amazing stories about him, good and bad. Definitely a character to look into.

If you look like a bad ass, and you make it look completely effortless, chances are you are a true bad ass. This is Les Claypool.

Flea is an awesome bass player too. So is Steve Harris of Iron Maiden. My favorite is Justin Chancellor of Tool

Les is the reason I started playing bass when I was a kid. I was obsessed with the sounds he was able to get out of the bass.

Saw them twice- once at Lalapalooza and later opening for Rush. Geddy joined them for a song. Two of the best bass players on stage together!

When we lived in the lower 48 biggest regret is not seeing them live when they came through on tours. Was always day late or a dollar short. Love Primus, seen numerous other bands live still on my bucket lust of shows to see. Dont get many shows up here in Alaska.
Keep up the great reactions im here for it. Other band never got to see live that cant now would be Rush....

Two suggestions about great bass players : Magma - de Futura (bass : Jannick Top), Living Colour - Wall (bass : Doug Wimbish). For these two songs, both the studio and live versions are phenomenal.

Oooh ya....Wimbish. Good call. Those guys were bitchin. My buddy smoked Cult of Personality in a cover band in the early 90's. Good times.

@@joseywailer7624 With Doug there's way more than Living Colour : many Sugarhill Records as a studio musician, Tack>>Head (with the other Sugarhill Records musicians Keith LeBlanc and Skip Mc Donald, plus Bernard Fowler), a lot of On-U Sound productions with Adrian Sherwood, some Bomb The Bass songs, Jungle Funk and his own solo projects.

Have you done Elephant Talk by King Crimson? There's a live performance on the late, lamented Fridays tv show. Adrian Belew is amazing, as is the rest of the band.

This is probably my favorite primus performance. The guitar at the very end always gives me chills and I'm glad you enjoyed it as well! Their deep cuts are the best....like Del Davis's tree farm!
