Bass is pronounced as base, brother! I made that mistake when I was young and was promptly corrected on it, lol. Just thought I'd share. Primus is a great band. Les definitely inspired a love in the bass guitar for me. One Better is one of my favorite songs they play. They have a cartoon music video made for it that's pretty wild. Check it out sometime!

My girl never liked Primus until I took her to go see them live at the Oakdale Theater in Connecticut. Being a concert junkie she agreed to give them a chance. We were on the edge of the pit all night so she could get close to the action without getting hurt. I’ve been a fan since around 1990 and though I love their albums it’s their live show that never fails to be phenomenal. They killed it and she got to elbow a few people who got too close. Lol. She’s become a huge fan.
Les is known to have a ton of side projects, too. Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains is worth checking out with Buckethead, Bernie Worrell from P Funk, and Bryan “Brain” Mantia who is drummer on a few Primus Albums. He did one album under the name Sausage which is actually the original Primus lineup. Todd Huth on guitar and Jay Lane on drums. I recommend starting with “Riddles are Abound Tonight” on that album. He has a solo project where he plays everything with only a few small guest musicians an a few songs. That album is called “Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel Presents: Highball With the Devil.” The track “Holy Mackerel” is a good place to start on that album. He has a project called Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade with a rotating membership of musicians and some interesting instrumentation. They play a lot of festivals and shows and are actually on tour right now.
Lastly, Les was a massive fan of Geddy Lee and Rush early on and became friends with them in the 90s. My best friend and his brother saw Primus open for Rush and that’s my biggest missed-concert regret.

The first time I heard Primus was when I was 13 years old in 1993. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area every New Years Primus will have a concert I begged my parents to let me go but they never let me.

My best friend played the stand up bass when we were growing up. He started on the stand up and he also had an electric bass. My friend said at the time that he could get more deeper sounds from the stand up bass

A little trivia about this video: Les Claypool is a big Pink Floyd fan. His pig costume and the businessman on fire are references to the Floyd albums "Animals" and 'Wish You Were Here".

I'm glad you like Primus. They got me through some rough stuff in life and to see you react to their music on a Saturday morning... It's made my day

Randomly saw them live in Guadalajara Mexico quite a few years ago. Smaller venue. Top ten best shows ever. Teatro Diana was the name of the place. Nice and cozy super perfect for this!

More conventional? Ummm...surrrre. How about simply great!
Edit: Les Claypool is the madman on the bass and vocals.

"Mr. Krinkle, have you heard the brand new sound? It's across between Jimi Hendrix, Bocephus, Cher and James Brown. It's called 'Heavy Hometown' New Wave, cold-filtered, low-calorie, dry." Best description of Primus ever.

"How can you not like this?!" You're completely correct. I seen them live once in Pittsburgh, PA on their Anti-Pop Tour and it still holds the #1 spot for best band I've seen live.

If you haven't watched Rammstein's Du Hast live from Paris, I highly recommend it. It's a Grrman rock band, but you don't need to know the language to love the concert. Pyrotechnics and effect are hands down the most fantastic I have ever seen. Its jaw dropping.

Loving seeing you discover some bands I've come to take for granted. I have always lent towards music that challenges the norm, and Primus is definitely that. I reckon you'd probably enjoy Morphine also. Maybe "Honey white", or "Buena". Unusual line-up of instruments and such great grooves.

Primus was the first concert I went to when I was a senior in high school (1992) at the Greek theater in Berkeley, CA. Them and the Violent Femmes were my favorite bands at the time. And I got to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Lalapolooza a couple years later.

Hey polo. I appreciate how you help me see my favorite stuff for the first time again. Especially since I'm not very musically educated. It's nice to hear someone put words to things I'm unable to describe. The Bass in this video makes me want to see your reaction to the 2 man group, 2cellos. Especially their thunderstruck cover.

Moshed to Primus in the lawn at a Lalapolooza 93. Love some Primus. But now I'm old. If you did dig this, get to Vegas and see Cirque de Solei - Mystere. It's the most recently thing I recall seeing that gave me this kinda vibe. No guarantees but it might be a life experience for you.
