      In fact, there is another space game GALACTIC FIELD to be launched on STEAM this year. It is just an independent game. The space feels more sci-fi than STAR FIELD.

    It really is unfortunate that time constraints stopped you guys from getting the landing nacelles to rotate properly. Having played Starfield for the last week, watching those pods fold back on takeoff and swing forward on landing is pretty iconic, but even without that key element the model still looks great, and that's one heck of a testament to the great work you and your team out into it.

      I think they'd have to replicate movement to be more like a helicopter diving if you can't move the nacelles, heavily nose forward.

      The way the landing thrusters are still in the "landing position" makes it look like a model, not even CG, just .. fake. Not sure if they oversized the engines or ship body is undersized .. but it looks wrong.
      And how they did the take off just felt weird too since if you played the game you notice the thrusters are just there to "push it" off the ground so the main engines can take over and push it out into orbit while the landing thrusters rotate up for "flight mode"

    This might be one of the best series that tested has ever put out... I've watched 30 seconds of this video so far.... definitely starting from the beginning because this looks incredible

    Bethesda got my money for Starfield just for watching Adam light up making a practical model and the filming process.
    An STL for a smaller ship would be much appreciated.
    "Fail in private."
    "A model is not finished, it is abandoned."
    Are great words to hear.

    I think it needed a bit more touch up in post to really get it to work properly. The background, particularly, lacks depth. Maybe more work on the blacks to make the depth of space seem more infinite. Right now it still sits in the beautiful model in front of an LED screen realm. But amazing model, just needs more post refinement to sell it. I always wonder if miniatures are better suited to being shot on film stock anyway: the clarity of digital makes the blacks seem less deep.

      I agree, funny enough the test shots they did a couple episodes back were almost all far more convincing than any of these shots. So I’m a little disappointed :/ but I think that’s all entirely down to time constraints and this essentially being the first time this has ever been done.

    It still reads as a model to me, and I can't tell whether it's because I've seen all the behind the scenes production of the shot's, or because they didn't have time to put filters over top of it, and add things like thrusters firing effects etc. Would love to see one last episode doing all the post production stuff I just mentioned if possible. I've really enjoyed watching this in the run up to the release of Starfield, and am now enjoying my playthrough of the game as well. Well done Tested Team!

      The model is doing a distracting amount of jiggling on the motion rig. Also I think Adam is right, there are too few specular features. The model is still reading as plastic because it's so uniformly matte. The last seconds of that last shot though as that blue light softly illuminates the structure between the engines as the back rotates towards the camera is very cinematic. The elements are really coming together in a convincing way.

      Yeah the depth of field is to short and the LED wall ain't outputting enough light which makes it looks quite modely and fake.

      @@Armadous The biggest "tell" to me that it is a model is the lack of detailing. Especially on the front of the ship - the uniform paint job and lack of panel lines. I belong to a model building group and the members spend a lot of time making sure that their planes and spaceships have convincing paint jobs. The design of the ship and build quality is excellent though.

      Yeah I agree. It didn't look "real" to me. Just looked like a toy model. It's a fanstically well made model but I just didn't see the cinematic quality here.

      Indeed. For me the only shot that really works is the last one. All the rest sits between fake and terrible (the landing gear shot with the moss).

      The crew being able to see almost finished footage in real time is a game changer. The Orbital CCO said he'd never seen anyone do a motion control model shoot with LED screens before. Instead of waiting for renders to come back, they can tweak everything on the fly, like how Adam added quickly smoke to one sequence.

    Oh, please Adam, please talk to your clients going forward and see if any of them will allow you to do this with their projects. Everyone loves behind the scenes content, and you'd be providing a version of behind-the-scenes content that we haven't seen since the ILM content for Starwars. This series was the best thing I've seen in a long time on TH-cam. You've given us a taste... Now we're addicted and want more.

      Yes. All in all absolutely stunning, but considering the obvious budget I wonder what more is needed to get it to realism as it did look like a miniature still. Nonetheless it is beautiful work of course.

    7:47 lol 😂 thanks for putting in Adam using technical jargon while making edits. The “ri ruh” & “ruh ri” are very important in production. I’m a musician and we have these jargons too. It’s amazing how communication gets in art but a great team absolutely understands what is being said.

    When I was a kid and Star Wars first came out, there we so many TV programmes about the SPFX - models, green screens and the Dykstraflex, little model X-wings, TIE Fighters, The Falcon and big explosions on the Death Star diorama, etc.
    I loved it and this series brings it all back.

      ​@@914Rocky Well, the crane used was not well balanced (I doubt it would be used in this state on actual production). Movement realism was not a target i think. This was mostly to demostrate lightwall usage.

    This whole series has been absolutely amazing. With each episode, I’ve been impressed with how well the whole team worked together. And the BTS footage at Orbital made me feel like I was on the set with you. Great job! Thank you for all the hard work that went into this series. I’d definitely enjoy watching many more like this.

    Adam, I've been a fan for a while...but your depth of enthusiasm for the field of every single person you interact with is amazing. You're like a kid in a candy store in the best way possible with everyone you work with, and it's an inspiration.
    Beautiful model, excellent series, and fantastic insights into the film industry and the art of scale model making and shooting! I'm not even a film maker, and this is one of my favorite series' to date.

    I didn't understand, during the first hours of gameplay, why all the technicians and salespeople were talking so badly about the Frontier - with _"that thing's older than" and "surprised it made it here"._ Contrast that against the (still fresh) awe and wonder of space travel, delivered to me by Barrett's ship at the beginning of this masterpiece. It's like a first car, undoubtable in your mind: the best vehicle ever engineered. I felt truly bad selling it. The spaceship, not the car, _that_ I was glad to get rid of haha.

    I would love a series where once every couple months the audience just picks a sci fi prop or set like a car, gas station, fridge, just something totally random and Adam and the crew design and make that prop. I could watch them make miniatures all day. So fascinating with the background on Grant Imahara's work on robotics, Fon's input, ILM techniques, etc. Great series!

    Amazing work by the Tested peeps! I love that Grant's work and techniques are used and applied in one way shape/form. I cannot think of a better way to pay homage and respect to him. I'm really looking forward to see the potential for continuing this series with other partners and Tested crew. It feels like a the next natural progression for the channel.

The filming shots were spectacular and you ALL deserve the highest praise for the excellence of your work. I build (well, I'm going to start up again) static plastic kits so, this was a fun watch for me. You guys deserve to bust your arms patting yourselves on the back for this one.

    Bethesda allowing them to release a print file of the hero ship is pretty cool. The final cuts were awesome. My fave was the ground shot start-up, seeing the thrusters come on with live smoke, chef's kiss 🤌
    Wish we could have seen them play with the cockpit cut-away diorama in the mo-cap studio. Or the extended version of the loading ramp for the cargo bay. Ah well...

    Looks like you guys had fun! But it quite clearly looks like a miniature unfortunately :)
    Firstly it's the depth of field, not sure what aperture you are using, but it needs to be quiet a lot smaller. But of course doing that will be a problem connected to the second reason why it feels like a miniature and that is that it seems like those LED panels aren't outputting enough light. That's most clear in the cloud shot where the sun ain't hitting the ship nearly as hard as it should making the background feel quite disconnected with the ship. And it seems that you know yourself that it's not enough light since you had to add another key light in that space shot, problem is though that it doesn't match the sun and the light on the planet in the background making it again feel quite disconnected with the ship.
    Also the ship feels quite matte over all and with no metal anywhere, which would be an easy fix if this had been full CG ;)

      I feel like had this been a real scene on an actual movie or show a lot more time would've been put into the preparation of the scenes, shooting as well as post production. This was more of an experiment as a new way of shooting with miniatures with these new led panels and yeah, there are parts that could be worked upon but at the same time it's a great demonstration that this whole setup works, and it works well enough to be worth while.
      Also, in the same way shooting with miniatures is hard because it can easily look like a miniature, CG scenes almost always are obviously CG scenes and we are all used to it because it's everywhere nowadays, but it does has its flaws and the same spot made for example entirely with game graphics would've just looked boring, where as this, this is.. interesting, it's odd, it's different, eventhough it's clear what it is.

      @@MrChoklad Yeah they would probably have worked harder on this for a real shoot, but tbh I don't think at least these LED panels is any good for this kind of miniatures shots, it's just the problems with physics. They need to shoot at VERY small apertures to get both the model and background in focus, and then they start getting issues with diffraction and that loss of light from the panels. So sure, better and brighter panels would help, or perhaps smaller panels with smaller pixel pitch so they can get closer to the model. Or bigger models.
      .. or just well done CG, that will beat even the best practical effects :)
      (I know this is not the right channel to advocate CG, but fyi there are LOADS of CG that you've seen but haven't noticed just because it blends in so extremely well :) )

      @@gurratell7326 no no I feel you on the CG, I'm both an avid fan of the corridor crew as I am of Adam 😂 but that level of good cg is comparable with the time and money required for miniature (whenever it's possible), let's not forget good cg still is extremely expensive. I think there still is a space for this type of work in the business, even tho as you say the tech is not quite there yet in this specific case. It's hard to say CG is not gonna take over in the future, but as much as it avances, practical effects in certain scenarios feel so much more vivid and real. I mean, Mad Max certainly has amazing VFX that complements the practical shots, but the rawness of those shots is incredible, to the point where I can't see anyone today being able to render out a single scene like that. Also, as Adam mentioned, the practical shots in Interstellar, which is also a movie with incredible VFX. But I'm deviating from the miniature topic lol

      When using LED panels, the depth of field has to be "faked" in the background shot, by blurring it a little, or a lot. The screen is way to close to get any real "bokeh", whatever aperture you're using.

      @@MrChoklad Tbh CGing these shots is quite easy, especially the space one. Just take the in game model and textures, maybe work say half an hour to up the shaders a bit, and then slap a big sun light and maybe some subtle area lights, press render and you're done. I've done some lighting for one of the latest Star Trek shows and it just takes a few minutes to get something good :)

    Looks great. I think one problem is that we saw this model for hours (including the previous videos). And then in the last seconds when we see the finished movie it is difficult not to think about this as the model which we saw for hours. I am sure for someone who never saw the model and only the final movie it looks a lot more real. It was a pleasure to watch this mini-series. Thanks.

    For me this video series was without question the best thing the Tested team have ever done. Infomative, collaborative, creative and heartwarming. It honestly felt like it's what Adam and team have been working towards all these years. They finally have the team, tools, knowledge and backing to take on projects like this.
    It would be amazing if these multi-episdode "Full Team" specials became a yearly thing that we can all look forward to!

    I've played about 20 hours of Starfield now, and now seeing this last part of the series has really cemented my excitement for models and visuals in this game (and in general). I keep trying to catch the light when I'm at a starstation or looking at a planet from orbit and think "What would Fon or Adam have thought about this?". This was truly wonderful, everyone did such a great job. Thank you!

    I know this comment will probably be lost in the masses, but I work in stage lighting using LED's and in recent years adding a LIME LED to the usual RGB makes a massive difference to the quality of all different temperature of whites as well as other colour mixes, hopefully the LED manufacturers will figure a way of adding a LIME substrate to the usual RGB substrates, I think that as well as smaller pixel pitches is the next big step.

    Thank you for allowing us the Roller coaster ride in to the real work behind the film.     The space shot is stunning in its own right, but the sight of the ship ascending through the lower atmosphere is truly incredible. It could easily serve as a shot in a modern sci-fi blockbuster.

    I agree with many that it still looks like a model. The landing gear on the moss just didn't work. What happened to the internal shot ? We never go to see that part.... With that being said its been a great series to watch , thank you Adam

    Oh man you make getting old fun! My brother and I were all about the Revell models Testors paints, Xacto knives, and model trains in the 70s and 80s. You've given me a whole new appreciation for getting the job done imperfectly. We can make mistakes on a small scale and still pull off the project.     When I saw the previous videos, I thought they’d gone overboard with weathering the model, but it actually looked very good and natural as far as that goes, once lit properly. Agree with others, though, there’s some issue with the cinematography that’s making it look model-y and fake in the end footage: jitter, focal length, etc.

      Weathering never looks as heavy to a camera. I've super weathered models and they looks slightly dirty on camera

    I watched the whole series and I'm blown away by the final shots you all were able to produce. The elements all blended together seamlessly to bring the viewer into the environment, you created reality from a blend of so many mediums. I'm reminded how far filmmaking has come since so many of those iconic movies we all grew up on. Bravo to you all!

    Sadly the final shots didn’t do justice to the final miniature. They said in the video that they had not photographed anything like this against these screens before and it showed. I think trying to shoot everything in one lighting pass was a mistake, and it should have been shot with multiple passes for ambient light, key light, engines etc… and then comped together. The background looked low rez and the ship looked more like a toy than the obviously high quality miniature that it appeared to be in other shots. Still it was a fun series of vids to watch !!

      Shooting it frame by frame would have given the model time to stop moving. Of course, that's very time consuming. The end result is not up to the quality of the model... and it is a great model.

      Yeah...I mean, for something that they have never done before, they needed more time for testing. Indeed the quality of the model deserves more time shooting and in the post proccessing. But yeah, actually the end result, altough it's had as the "main objetive", actually is just 1% of this whole awesome series!

    Very impressive project and a truly beautiful model. I fully appreciate the passion and attention to detail the whole team has put into this project, but something about the end result of those shots is a bit off for me. The camera moves? The movement of the ship? The shot composition? The lighting? The backgrounds? It all looks very "small" for want of a better word. Sorry to be a bummer, I'm just trying to figure out what's pulling my eye in weird directions and breaking the magic.

    This series has been amazing. Unfortunately the final shots were pretty underwhelming, and the first tests they did in the workshop actually looked far more convincing, but I realize this sort of time constraint on something that’s never really been done is not going to yield the best results. Regardless, I’m so glad this series was produced and I’m sad it’s over now!

      I’m sad to say that I agree. I loved the series but the final video looked like a model to me. It didn’t look at all realistic. I wonder if metal as opposed to 3d printed material would have made a difference. In many ways it feels like a 20 year step back in terms of technology.

      Those aren't the final shots, that's before the entire compositing/cinematography/colour grading etc pass. Go watch the live action trailer this was done for to see the actual final shots.

      @@914Rocky I think it’s just a problem of lighting and movement, neither of which they really had time to dial in very well. If you go back and watch the video where they first completed the model and did some test shots in their workshop you’ll see that some of those shots look totally amazing, particularly the one shot from behind the ship. This thing could be made to look absolutely real, I just think it would have taken much longer than they had to get it to look right in the motion-control virtual set.

      They had a huge video wall and used a TV size section to do the shot😂 what a waste of time. You know what else they could have used? A frickin LED TV. ..just as bad looking for a fraction of the cost. Gaudy space backdrops used. And the 800 dollar portable smoke machine the other guy was shilling last week? ( I'm sure they're flying off the shelves). As for Microsoft mega Corp (" democratising effect" or whatever nonsense Adam was blabbing about ) giving the 3d file away? Who cares? Its not as if someone has ripped the files from the game already.The ship design sucks anyway. The whole modular ship building in the actual game isn't really setting the gaming world on fire. Most would say it sucks if they are being honest. This Tested channel...I don't know..looking back at the recent videos. Expensive resin printers?. How to make...sorry...buyfor 800 dollars.. smoke machines. And how to snip a wire to the speaker on a kids toy?? Ehhh???

    I absolutely loved this series. I learned so much. In the end the production was still missing something. I play the game which likely gives me an unfair advantage as to what this ship looks like in motion. The lighting in place of thruster flames and lack of ship animations are difficult for me to digest. It just goes to show that it takes a massive amount of work to turn imagination into a believable presentation. Thanks to all who worked so hard and brought this to us to be able to appreciate.

    This is probably the most amazing series I've ever seen. As a modeller what stands out to me the most is your attention to detail. The finished shots from the studio definitely beats out any cgi that could have been created. You've blended old school tech, (the ship) to the latest in sound stage tech, (Orbital Studios) in a spectacular way. My hat is off to you and your team for creating such a cool ship! You are all a true inspiration. 👍👍👍👍👍

      Great though this series has been the final shoot was a disappointment and produced a weak result not even worthy of a cheap TV series. The ship wobbled visibly at some points and they even managed to make it look like a smaller model than it actually is.

    I hope this art never, ever gets lost. It genuinely makes me tear up for some reason.
    Edit: ‘There’s nothing like it all being in camera’ tell that to David Lynch’s Dune - possibly the most ground breaking SFX and astonishing single-pass visuals, combined with… well… they looked good at the time hand drawn SFX.
    EditEdit: Wow. It’s amazing how during the sunset shot it felt like the day was winding down, then cut to them reviewing that shot on the jungle stage and it feels like they’re standing outside, purely from the lighting effects of the virtual stage. Very impressive.

    The only nit is that the 4 side-mounted engines should be pointed back after takeoff and gear up. They rotate to about 10* down from center-line. They shouldn't be pointed straight "down" (relative to the ship body) in space.
    This has been an amazing project. I was a model-maker when I was a kid, and this really makes me want to take it up again. The problem is all the other hobbies and stuff I have now that I have money to spend on things... :D

      We didn't get much info regarding their initial meetings with Bethesda. Maybe the engines changing direction was never in the brief or any of the design files? Would've been cool though, I agree.

      @@Kwayzar_ Sure, they definitely didn't get into that. But a model maker should probably ask "What parts move and when?" Even for static models, knowing what parts should move and when helps to understand what you need to do to make a scene look the way it "should" according to the "reality" of the backstory of the scene.
