  • With Rocky Mountain Race Week coming up in the next couple weeks it is really time for us to buckle down and get ole Uncle Rob fully prepared and ironed out for the event. That includes getting rid of the weak and lame stock open diff in favor of a stronger limited slip posi unit! In this video we show how to tear it all down and remove the factory diff unit. We also prepare for a huge brake upgrade with EBC Brakes components!

I’m so pumped for race week. Even though Uncle Rob won’t be competitive in any classes I am just excited to participate with Logan as co pilot and see what the build will do! Who thinks it’ll run 11s?
Also…the OG SAW hat you always see me wear is now live on the website!

A note for Logan for using a torque wrench. You need to pull the handle towards you, then you have complete control. If you're leaning your weight into it, there's almost no control. Same with busting knuckles. Pulling gives you control, pushing gives you bust knuckles.

I had the same issue on my 10bolt about a month ago, my truck is pretty crusty like Uncle Rob. They're technically supposed to be 13mm, and although everyone believes 1/2 and 13 are the same size (which don't get me wrong, they're interchangeable 99.95% of the time), my diff bolts would try to round off with a 13mm, but ease right off with a 1/2. Both 6 point sockets from the same set.

I just found your channel so I'm not sure if you've changed the exhaust or not but the exhaust from a GMT800 Duramax. I've got an 06 Yukon and I put the exhaust from a 2005 crew cab Duramax 3500 I had. We cut it where the exhaust merge and welded the Duramax exhaust in. We used a Borla X1R oval muffler. It worked perfectly we just needed to add a hanger or two, even with 5" of suspension drop and on 315/35/20 which around 28" tall it didn't rub or contact anything. If I keep it NA I have a Flowmaster 3" to 4" merge to connect to the exhaust. If I go FI the downpipe will obviously connect straight up. Since you wanted this to be a budget build find someone that put an exhaust on their Duramax and scoop it up.

The pin is called a c clip retainer, the caps are line bored so you do want keep them on the right sides. And the easiest way to get the ring gear out is to put a old shop rag or t shirt in between the ring and pinion and spin the yoke, it will push the ring gear out. Just so you know for next time.

A case spreader makes this job easy and correct, 98% of people don’t use one.
It’s the only way to get proper bearing preload on the carrier bearings. And it makes the differential slide in and out when you spread the case .015.
If you can just slide the carrier in the housing, when the bearings break in the diff will be loose.

Okay okay first off nice build going on man. I have a 02 Z71 burb that I've been working on myself for a few years on a very low budget. In fact I'm replacing the whole rearend after I rebuild the new one in the garage. I wasn't gonna comment until I got about 15 minutes in the video and you said and I quote "roast me in the comments, help the algorithm" lol. So as much as I try not to make fun of people or what they do because they're doing the damn thing ya know? But...lol...at a minute and a half when I seen y'all was cuttin the rim...I was like alright this is gon be an alright video lol. I would've cut the cable above the wheel, they usually fall then. Also to help draining the fluid, take a 3/8 ratchet to the drain plug directly on the bottom of the housing. Other than that man good vids and keep on keeping on lol

Another thing you can do it tap the center of the axle and it will expose the c clips and you can take a magnet and pull them out

Change the axle seals and the bearing behind it while you have it apart. They are cheap. At least do the axle seals or they will probably leak. They make a case spreader that opens the case enough to easily get the diff out but guys like us don't have that luxury. I always use a pry bar like that. Another tip, warm the ring gear up just a little and it will fall off the carrier instead of beating on the bolts. Same with putting it back on.

The spare tire sucks. 2009 Silverado in Iowa so it was rusty as hell and stuck. Found a good video with a picture of the locking mechanism and was able to get it out eventually.

14:00, the term is "married" to one another...
14:56 put the pry bar in the cross pin hole, that way you can spear catch it when it suddenly dislodges and doesn't hit your foot. The same feet that are in sneakers...

Lol. I just had to deal with my spare tire mechanism like 3 days ago. Solved the problem by spraying pb-blaster and turning the rod back and forth for a few minutes and it eventually let loose. Works good now. But its funny how the timing of stuff works out sometimes.

Also a good magnet gets the axle clips out quick and easy... May not help you this time but could come in handy for the next time. Only reason I comment is b/c of your dedication to reading them it means a lot as a viewer! Keep it up bud your killing it!

I looked back at your RPO sticker and sure enough G80 isn’t there. Very bizarre that a fully loaded 4x4 Yukon would come without the locker but I’m guessing it has something to do with the z55 suspension. In the spot where g80 would be on the sticker there’s “g69” (nice) which also has to do with auto levelling.
