Turning a Custom Shifter Knob & Tapping a Threaded Insert - Woodturning [Walnut Burl]

  • This project was a practice piece for a commission for a few custom walnut burl gear shift knobs for a Studebaker M5 truck. Since it was my first shifter knob, and first time threading aluminum, I wanted to give my process a test drive, as well as try out the wood and make sure I let it dry enough.
I couldn't find any threaded inserts that I liked, so I decided to tap my own from aluminum rod. This knob needed a 3/8" x 24tpi insert, but if you decide to make your own, check the thread pattern first. Aluminum is soft enough to work with woodturning tools, so all you really need is the right tap and proper size drill bit. Just keep the lathe spinning slowly while you drill and tap it by hand with the lathe stopped.
For the finish, I used CA glue (try Starbond - 10% off code: CEWW) and MicroMesh (to 12,000 grit) to give it a durable gloss. Then I polished it with Shellawax.

Please note, my videos are for entertainment only. They are simply demonstrations and are NOT intended to be instructional. Proper training and experience are essential before attempting to use any woodworking equipment. Do not attempt projects or techniques that are beyond your skill level or your comfort level! Serious accidents can happen in an instant and bandaging wounds or sitting in an emergency room is much less fun than woodturning. You are always responsible for your own safety. The only rules are: 1) Be careful; 2) Have fun.

I agree, good job on reproducing an old style shift knob. I would have loved one in burl. 👍🤙

Hi Chad....ideally, the cutting edge tool would be fixed in a stable and static position on the tool guide and introduced to the stock in order to maintain centered integrity (since guiding by hand is not very stable); which makes me wonder if you can purchase a tool rest that would accommodate such a set up. You did an excellent fabrication nonetheless! Be well and stay healthy.

Thanks, Skip! I always appreciate your helpful comments. You’re completely right and I imagine I could buy or build something that would increase the precision and rigidity significantly. Tolerances for wood are nothing compared to tolerances in metal, so I knew it would be an uphill battle. Haha. I did another one with better results. My biggest mistake was that I didn’t have the end trued up before I started drilling, so I screwed myself from the start (pun intended). 😁 I did add a little taper to get the tap started, which helped, but figured I’d let people see me mess up then try to fix it. That’s just part of making after all. Luckily, I only have to make three inserts. Thanks for watching! Take care.

Nice job and good, clear exposition. Brass is also workable with woodturning tools, and not difficult to drill and tap. The aluminum threads, especial fine threads, would not stand up as well to an application that would require the part to be removed and reattached frequently. Obviously not the case with a shifter knob. Well done! Good idea to use the bolt as a part holder!

Thanks, Ron! I didn’t think about brass, but I’ll keep that in mind for future projects. I was a little iffy about the aluminum, but like you pointed out, it’s not going to be stressed or have any load applied to it so I figured it was worth a shot. Thanks for watching and for the brass idea!
