Woodturning - Osage Orange Natural Edge Bowl [with Scorched Rim]

  • Osage orange wood is one of my favorites because of its bright yellow color, but it's often pretty gnarly and can be tough to work with. This piece had some cracks, an off center pith, and was somewhat dry (osage orange is hard on tools when it's dry), so I stuck with a simple natural edge design, minus the bark, and scorched the edge instead, which gave it a nice contrast against the yellow wood. As usual, I'm mostly using my 1/2" and 5/8" bowl gouges. I did include a good bit of the sanding in this video to show how I sometimes sand my natural edge bowls while they're still on the lathe. You have to pay close attention to the direction of the rotation of the bowl and the sanding pad, but it can be done quite effectively on some pieces (it's usually better for pieces without bark).
    You'll also notice the exciting new addition to my shop - a ‪@LagunaTools‬ Revo 24/36! I've been waiting about two and a half months for it to arrive. I'm looking forward to expanding my capabilities with the bigger swing and, especially, the 3hp motor!

    Great Osage bowl, especially the edge and thickness. Looks as tho it’ll hold a whole bag of jelly beans. Enjoy your new turning machine!!

    Hey Chad! Great video and congrats on the Laguna!! (I’m way behind on watching your video so sorry for the belated congrats! Lol)
    I love my 1836 although, I wish it had the secondary remote mounted controls like the 2436.
    That Osage orange turned out to be an amazing bowl! Thanks for sharing!

      It seems like my last few videos haven't had much reaction from the people who usually comment... hopefully, it's just a temporary thing! I'm loving my 2436, but I haven't used my secondary remote at all, because the only logical place for it is the tailstock, which I remove from my lathe for 90% of my turning. I put some magnets on the back of it, so I can stick it anywhere, but I still don't use it. Although, that might change when I get something with a big diameter on there that I can't reach around. Thanks for watching! Good to hear from you!

    First thing I noticed was the new lathe. I have one coming soon myself. So excited. Glad to see it in action. Not many of them out there to watch. Lots of 1836's though. Congrats on the new machine.

      Thanks man! Yeah, I could only find people with the 18/36 for the most part. I’m digging the 24/36 so far! I hope you enjoy yours!

    I saw some Linus and Daphne bums, haha! It's too bad this piece of wood had so many issues, I'm sure the bowl ended up quite a bit smaller than you hoped. As always you're work is incredible!

    • @ChadEamesWoodWorks
      @ChadEamesWoodWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The piece actually ended up pretty good. The cracks seem to be stable. It’s a little more “rustic” than what I usually make but that’s okay. Thanks for watching!

    I wqork with osage a lot and hope you put some UV protectant on it so it doesn’t turn brown. Nice job!

    • @ChadEamesWoodWorks
      @ChadEamesWoodWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi George! Do you have any recommendations for a UV protectant that actually works well for keeping osage's color in the long term? I haven't used anything that seems to do much in terms of color shift prevention and I haven't been able to find much info about products or methods that actually work. I've just accepted the fact that osage's color changes no matter what. It would be great to be able to slow that color change down! Thanks for watching!

      @@ChadEamesWoodWorks I have used regular sun block a couple time a year. Just apply a small amount and rub it in. I have also had good results with a lacquer finish from krylon that has a UV protectant in it and the results have been very good. No matter what finish I always recommend trying to keep it out of direct sunlight or light from incandescent or halogen light.Hope this helps.

    Very nice job on the bowl. AND --- A NEW LATHE!! wow Christmas in April! Just curious what options the Laguna had that took you in that direction over one of the other manufactures of lathes that size. Not making a negative comment on your decision. I enjoy your videos and find them very informative.

    • @ChadEamesWoodWorks
      @ChadEamesWoodWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Joel! My main requirement for a new lathe was 3hp, and the second requirement was a larger swing over the bed, preferably 24". If you want 3hp, the options get pretty limited, pretty quickly (Robust, Vicmarc, Powermatic, and a couple others). The Laguna is about half the price of the "top" brands and all the people I asked were happy with their Laguna lathes (mostly the 18/36). It's probably (definitely) not as structurally rigid as the others I mentioned, but the construction is similar to my Jet, so I assumed that would be the case. So far, it has been pretty solid, but I'll probably add two or three hundred pounds of concrete pavers to a rack that spans the legs, to help hold it down for bigger, unbalanced pieces. So far, it's been great though. I have more clearance over the banjo of the Laguna, than I have over the bed of my Jet!

    • @joelspring2487
      @joelspring2487 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChadEamesWoodWorks - I just looked at the specs for that lathe - I see why you may need the extra weight. I have the JET 1840 and use sand to weigh it down. The sand absorbs the vibration and doesn't rattle around. May be an option for you. Good luck with the new lathe - it should last you a long time!

    • @ChadEamesWoodWorks
      @ChadEamesWoodWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Jet 1642 had about 300 lbs of landscaping pavers under it. The cracks were filled with shavings so they didn't really rattle, but I do like the idea of sand for the extra dampening... that's probably the route I'll go. The difference between the Jet and the Laguna footprint and center of gravity are quite noticeable; the Laguna has a wider leg stance and the bed is much lower. It's been surprisingly stable without any extra weight, so I'm going to try it that way for a while, then add weight and see the difference. Thanks for the sand tip!

    Where did you get the sanding pad with the long shaft?

    • @ChadEamesWoodWorks

      One of them I made (it’s one of my previous videos), the other I pieced together with separate parts from several sources. Woodturners wonders has a good selection of sanding accessories.

    Just a safety thing Chad, never move your tool rest while the Lathe is running. Dangerous move. Just saying.

    • @ChadEamesWoodWorks
      @ChadEamesWoodWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve been waiting for someone to tell me that since I started my channel and I think you might be the first! I try to be aware and stop the lathe when I move the tool rest on camera just to set a good example, but I know in reality I move it plenty while the lathe is still running. Your concern is 100% valid and appropriate, and I appreciate you watching out for my safety! Just know that I do always assess the risk of what I’m doing with the tool rest when the lathe is on and if I think it is particularly risky I always stop it. If the day comes that I do have an “incident” I hope I’m recording it because that would surely be my most popular video! 😂 Thanks a lot for watching... and watching closely!

    Suggest you watch other videos that explain how to turn.👎👎

    • @ChadEamesWoodWorks
      @ChadEamesWoodWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My goal isn’t to explain how to turn. My goal is to demonstrate how I approach projects and anyone is welcome to glean whatever they can from it. Lots of people gain all sorts of knowledge from my videos. They tell me every day, literally. If you’re looking for basic instruction, there are plenty of options out there, but that’s not my thing (at least not on YT). Good luck with your turning endeavors!
