Fantasian was well worth my time. We need more games like these but preferably not locked to Apple arcade, this should have been on the switch as well. I really took my time with this one and the portable nature of it was great. My only real gripe was they should have added a quicksave option to let you quit and resume from the main menu but frequent checkpoints and save points do mititgate this problem somewhat.

fantasian is probably one of the only worthwhile JPRG I have played in years, I love the pace of the story and the text animations are actually really good, after being disappointed by things like I'm Setsuna and Octopath traveler, this game actually managed to fulfill my nostalgia por old Final Fantasy games (FF IX)

It's worth my time. I'm 40 hours in and can't stop playing, one of the best JRPG I ever played, at least one of the best of the last 20 years. It has the feeling of the old Final Fantasy games, the story is amazing imo, I love the concept of Order and Chaos in a war and all the philosofy behind it, all characters are likable with a nice background. The combat system is balanced and hard in a good way since we are in a time that all of these style of games are too easy, but it's not hard in requiring grinding, it's hard requiring strategy, preparation, thinking, if you know what you are doing you beat all bosses easily. If you are thinking about picking apple arcade to play this game just do it if you love classical JRPG. If you have an iMac, Mac Pro or Macbook you can play the game, no need to stay only on mobile. I play most of the time on my Mac Pro desktop with 4k resolution and it scales beautifully.

Note that after you complete the True Dimengeon quest, you have the option to empty it of its monsters for 10k gold at the outskirts of Vibra. The tedious grinding can therefore be avoided.

    Your review is excellent.
I spent 91+ hours on this game to complete the main story and all side quests. It's been weeks since I completed and I'm still mentally scarred by this game what I loved to hate so much.
To newcomers just do yourself a favor and just play Part 1 and then get a guide through the rest. Don't torture yourself like I did unless you're too far and just want to finish what you started like I ended up.
I went on to New Game plus for about an hour and immediately cancelled my Apple Arcade subscription because I was not doing that to myself!!! Apple must have approached Mistwalker to tell them to make the game longer however possible and that is a pure shame how they milked the game for Apple Arcade subscription revenue. This game deserved the original Final Fantasy 10 spirit it had in Part 1.

Thank you for the honest review. I'm someone who grew up with squaresoft and as a child I was a fanboy but as I've gotten older I've slowly drifted away from them, and I haven't enjoyed many of their games in the recent decades apart from their Dragon quest games and a few original games. I was always interested in Fantasian because of it being made by MistWalker, but it only being available on Apple arcade combined with its very lukewarm reviews had me not bothering to play it and wrote it off as mediocre. It's sad to see that was a correct assessment. I am however looking forward to project triangle strategy, I think that game looks pretty awesome.

@@rpg_haven Yeah, it definitely seems like they needed to trim the fat a bit and keep it a tighter journey with less filler. I bet if this had been a 30-35 hour rpg it would have rocked. Here's hoping they do Dragon Quest 4, 5 , 6 in the same style as DQ3!
Also, I'm curious what your thoughts on Shin Megami Tensei 5 are, if you play that series. I feel like you and I are on a similar wavelength to what we want out of games, so hearing your thoughts would be valuable and entertaining. Cheers.

I actually liked Part 2 better than Part 1. I agree that the encounter rate/Dimengeon were a real hassle throughout the game (something they can easily fix by lowering encounter rates and upping EXP gains) and that the story is a lot less fleshed out for an already mediocre plot, but simply being able to switch out party members mid-battle opened up so much flexibility/strategy in battle that I got hooked. I know you didn't finish the game but the last gauntlet of bosses was the most fun I've had in any JRPG, especially the final boss where it felt like every character had a role to play as opposed to the standard of just using your strongest characters to plow through.
That being said it definitely is a lot more "reactionary" in the sense that most bosses boil down to going in blind, wiping, and then changing your setup to counter said boss. Not to mention bosses can take a while (the final boss was pretty much a 30 minute marathon) so losing at the last second can be a real dealbreaker. If you don't have the time or patience for that you will absolutely detest part 2, which I can completely understand given the whiplash from how approachable part 1 was.

I wanted to love this game but the bosses just make me hate this game. Unless you have grinded enough, have the right gemstones, and use the right skills you’d have no chance. Plan on wasting 20 minutes for each boss fight before you figure out if you could do it. I’ve wasted so much time with bosses, even using guides. A lot of the time it’s random which attacks will happen which will decide your fate.
The best thing to happen to this game in part 2 would be to slash all boss HP I’m half or more. It might make it worth finishing. But for me a middle aged adult with a kid, I don’t have time for this. Deleting the game and Apple Arcade…

I'd like to point out that there is a solution for one of your biggest complaints. You can get around the tedium of fighting the lower-level enemies that fill up your Dimengeon device by going to a terminal outside Ez's house in the Vibran outskirts. It will let you clear you Dimengeon without fighting them for 10,000G each time.

    • @rpg_haven
      @rpg_haven  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I know about that, but I didn't find it useful. When I'm in the middle of a dungeon, I don't want to leave and go to that terminal, and I also don't really want to pay 10k just for that. I like the idea of the Dimengeon, but it needed more polish.

I thought that the first part was flawless. Really fun, story isn’t too hard for your level, you had to grind a bit for the last boss, but it wasn’t too bad. The first part does really well at introducing you to the game’s core mechanics.
Part 2 is a lot slower, but still really fun. There’s a lot more grinding, but the bosses are challenging and really satisfying to beat. The story isn’t quite as strict either, leaving you to do whatever you want in between the story. Sidequests are actually a little enjoyable to do, and the “free rein” style of Part 2 is really nice. It lasts you go at your own pace.
