    I wish I had seen this simple and informative video before now. It seems like a great, basic starting point set up, for the reportage side of the wedding shoot. Thanks for posting.

    Thank you so much! I just received my 5Dm3 and my eyes glazed over from so many options. I needed a place to start. Your tutorial was perfect because it not only told me where to begin, what to try and gave me a better handle on what settings were available... And you did it in under 6 minutes. Bravo!

    Every photographer has their likes and dislikes, and their favourite settings, the ones they are most comfortable and most conversant with.
    You shouldn't be beaten up for shooting your ISO in Auto mode, or shooting in AV mode for that matter. That is what does it for you.
    I feel comfortable in M (Manual) mode, so that i control everything. BUT i have been caught out many a times by not adjusting settings, and ended up with poor quality images. You live to learn, you learn to live. An advantage of AV or TV for that matter is that, you choose your depth of field (or shutter speed) and let the camera work out the shutter speed (or aperture value correspondingly) and you can just focus on shooting images. :-)

    • @MixUpTheVideos
      @MixUpTheVideos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think in a lot of cases that shooting in manual mode is purely based on an expression of arrogance.
      When you have time to compose a shot, compose all the settings, to force your camera to produce a result different to what your camera wants to do, then great...go manual.
      But when your results are going to be no different between manual and any other setting (from semi auto such as TV or AV to full auto) then why complicate it? And especially why complicate it at the risk of not being quick enough to adjust settings correctly to create a photo and miss the photo all together.
      Get over the arrogance, and understand that modes other than manual have their place.
      Ever tried to shoot 300 vastly different photos within a sporting event in manual mode? You would end up a chaotic mess, and there is n way you would get all your settings spot on for each photo. Instead, use TV, adjust this ONLY as needed, set ISO to auto and so on. That way, you are going to take care of what should be the highest priority in a sporting photo - shutter speed -(funny that...perhaps that's why it's called shutter priority?) and have your photos turn out crisp in freezing the motion. Yes, you may miss some opportunities of manipulating the creation of a photo by being in this mode - instead of say needing out of focus/in focus the way you want, but you are going to capture more overall opportunities by being in this mode! And if you DO want control of depth of field, then set up an AV setting too, and if needed, switch between your preset AV and TV settings as needed! No arrogance. Easy. And above all WORKS!

    I would also think about using Highlight Tone Priority in Camera3 panel. This helps stop the bride's dress being blown out in the sunshine - cos there's nothing worse than a head perched on top of a white cone!

    First of all, congratulations on making very useful video for not only wedding photographers but for all. I am so deeply impressed that i have instantly liked and subscribed to your channel.
    Few questions if you can find time to answer.
    1- Does these settings can put an extra load on battery, like ''Orientation linked AF point" if yes then how much?
    2- How to get soft light with speedlite mounted on camera body in an outdoor scenario without bumping ISO?
    3- Are all these settings dependent on AV mode or i can shoot with these settings on Manual Mode as well?

    I like the idea of reprogramming the DOF button. After a few years you know your DOFs so rarely use it. I would add registering the Highlight Alert to the favorites menu, so you can enable/disable it quickly.

      f14media I mean, in the menu, turn on Highlight Priority option, and it will care about more the white dress! More detail you save with it! The ISO settings will start from iso200 with it, you gonna see a "+" mark! In the menu: 1st section, 3rd page, under Picture Style! :-)

    • @nathan_woodgate

      Yes in the "Record func+card/folder" (Yellow section) menu select the record function "Record Separately". You can then chose what records to each card.

    hello just bougth my new first camera ever canon 5d mark iii. still trying to figure out how it works. but i got one qustion what type of memory card that i should buy for this 5d mark iii

    • @nathan_woodgate
      @nathan_woodgate  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +zion darl The camera will take 2 different types, CF and SD card. What type of card you need can all depend on what you are shooting. Burst shooting of sports needs a high speed read write to be able to keep up with the image processing. If you are more of a portrait photographer and have a smaller budget, a less speed read write are cheaper. But remember when it comes to downloading the images, the higher the speed card the better.

    excellent video! I just have one question do you leave Automatic ISO the entire day during the wedding or only in church?

    • @nathan_woodgate
      @nathan_woodgate  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Yesenia Gonzale Hi, that was just really for in the ceremony. We have now moved onto Fuji cameras and set the ISO manually. If the light will remain constant in the ceremony it may be easier to set the ISO manually but if the light is changing constantly then auto ISO is very useful

    • @yeseniagonzale5568
      @yeseniagonzale5568 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Photography Team : I am using a canon 70d so the best setting will be manuallt for the ceremony if the light is constant and when I go outside to shoot the couple it will be better to set it auto since the light changes correct?..also one more question when you are focusing with AI servo where do you place your focal point when the couple are walking down the aisle?

    • @nathan_woodgate
      @nathan_woodgate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Yesenia Gonzale yes that's correct, I normally use AV mode outside. If you are able to it's best to place a focus point on a face. However I also use zone tracking and let the camera automatically focus on the moving subject

    I would love see your set up for hassle free on camera flash. (600ex rt) As I understand in ettl and AV, the auto ISO is capped at 400?

    • @nathan_woodgate
      @nathan_woodgate  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +scz67 Yes that is true, when using our flashes we normally use either full manual mode or AV mode but we set the ISO manually. The flash is always on ETTL unless we want more control and then we switch it over to manual.

    I don’t shoot weddings, but I’m a big believer in we can all learn off each other no matter what genre. ISO is frequently used for wildlife photography, where tracking your subject can take the settings through several different meter readings. I can imagine, especially in older churches with the larger windows, the bride can walk through several meter readings just walking down the aisle. Are these permanent settings or stored in one of the custom settings? The reason I’m asking is for when you use artificial light and the impact of auto ISO there.

    Its hard for me to understand why you do not place the camera body in M mode when shooting inside the church. Shooting in M with the flash in E-TTL provides a much higher chance of getting well-exposed photos. Av should be reserved primarily for outdoors during the day light. Av causes the flash to be in Fill Mode, but it should usually be in Key mode.

      Unfortunately we are not allowed to use flash inside the church

    Hey,
    Is there an update for the 5dm3 or something, or an unlock for advanced options, because mine are limited in reference point to yours.
    Just wondering why your menu/settings has more options then mine, I couldnt get passed ISO Speed settings, I didn't have this option it the tabs, mine are more limited then yours?

      I half figured it out, I was on auto mode, which mode / dial do you use?

    • @nathan_woodgate
      @nathan_woodgate  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WorkJoker I mainly use AV mode

    I find it weird a pro would use auto iso.

      I sometimes use auto ISO too. The 5d3 has great high ISO performance, and the Canon dual control wheels make exposure compensating in the priority modes easy.
      The result is the ISO would be what I would choose if using manual ISO anyway, but one less thing to deal with in the fast paced wedding environment. If you shoot weddings you'll know the light inside some venues can change dramatially from the spotlit alter to near darkness just a few steps away.
      You also saw in this video where you can restrict the max ISO so you don't need to worry about the ISO going super high. 3200 is my personal max on this camera, but to each their own.

      You have your camera set to RAW. You need to change your image quality settings on the camera to JPEG
