My mind is blown by the family photos and interval timer. Wow I have no idea why I never thought of this. 5D3 setup tonight for family photos tomorrow!
I prefer using af:on too af OFF using index finger to meter and focus...leaving my thumb too stop a.f. or move my focus point with the multi controller.
Nice video and initial suggestions for the buttons swapping, but what does intervalometer/time-lapse have to do with having to change them first thing when getting a camera? Maybe I'm missing something.......
PhotoRec Toby I figured that too. It's such a great setup to use ergonomically and what makes the Canon "X"D series cameras stand out from others in my eyes/use.
PhotoRec Toby I can see that. I truly think the SLR has a firm place for simple features like that. But, mirrorless may actually be experienced as a better alternative for some types of photography like many landscape shooters. Wedding, sports, and journalists (70% of my work) still lean on SLR ergonomics and features...although it was funny to watch you and Christina argue a bit over that on Mish Mash last week. LOL
not an expert, but I never understand manual focus. As long as (I’m aware) and the camera tells me what it’s focused on. It always does a better job then me looking at a 2” Lcd screen.
Hi: I just bought the Canon 5DS camera and switched from JPG to RAW. But the photos won't transfer to my 128 GB SD card to transfer them to my computer. WHY? Thank you.
+Tomas Ramoska Yes. I should have included that because I do that too. Never used the DOF button like that, interesting idea and could be useful to me.
Hi I am trying to take square pictures for my web site using my 1300d eos canon and I also bought new macro lence with lights, ,is there settings for this,as my pictures I am taking are terrible ,all different sizes etc
Guys i have a question about Focusing shots. I have a T3I which as most of you probably know doesnt come with auto focus which is okay with me however if i am gonna be standing some distance away from the camera but also some distance away from the wall behind me how can i focus the camera when there is going to be nothing in the shot to focus. because obviously if i stand in position for a video i cant reach out and focus my camera because ill be too far away
I just can't seem to get used to using back button focusing. I am so trained with the half press over the past 20 or so years of autofocus I just can't seem to untrain myself.
SupraWes I understand what you mean, but only because of the location of the button. It can be awkward, reaching for it with your thumb! On my 7D it is much easier, when shooting profile shots, because the layout is a bit better!
I retried using back button focusing last year and I havent gone back since, so I guess it just took a second try for me. Also the realization that I could just press it once for a one shot type focus and recompose, or hold it down for focus tracking with continuous AF enabled was a huge eye opener for me to make the switch.
BBF is more work. It takes an extra step to accomplish! With focus tied to shutter button all is accomplished in ONE motion. With BBF it takes two steps across two fingers! I do not see how that is easier? If you want to focus only once and then shoot why not focus automatically and then put lens in manual mode! Then your focus is fixed and you can shoot away. If BBF was the norm in cameras and the shutter method came along you would be lauding focus with the shutter button for it's simplicity and economy of motion.
Hi Antonio, most pros use BBF for the reasons I mention in this video and in this article photorec.tv/2012/05/back-button-focusing/ AND while it's true it does take two fingers you can press them at the same time and that is way easier to do than switching your lens to manual which would be a pain to switch back .
+EnrichingMomentsPhotography By Elizabeth It does not. You can install magic lantern and record at very low frame rates which is almost identical - in fact I would say it is the same - you just have to take the effort of installing ML.
Curious: in the time lapse video above, what is the interval setting? Wondering what I should start with as I start to learn/play with time lapse. Thanks
+Rick Mentore You can make freaking fantastic images with this camera. Do I agree that when quantified via certain Dxo criteria it ranks 22 - sure. hard to debate that. I will be talking about this on our next live show. Thanks.
Hi nice video.. Can you kindly let me know the use of various other options which we get while customizing the AF On button.I will really appreciate it.Thanks :-)

Do you customize your depth pf field preview button? I have mine set to switch over to AI servo using my ring finger, I find that my ring finger rests naturally in that location anyway. If I am in single shot mode and my subject does start to move on me a single finger press allows me to track them.
+PhotoRec Toby this worked great for me shooting my son's wedding. The bride stops single shot mode she starts walking directly into AI servo. It worked really well
Can you please tell me that which camera do you use for recording your videos and which camera you used for recording this video please please +PhotoRecToby
+MonkeyButt117FTW, is it safe? im afraid that if i do something wrong it would break my camera. i dont even install magic lantern with my t3i because im not sure i could do it right.. btw thanks a lot bro... maybe its time for me to try magic lantern.
People always forget to mention that you loose the ability to shoot-at-focus when you set back-button-focus-only. :/ It's really only good for people that have a lot of time for composition, not really good for sports and such
You need to tone it down. You are talking way too fast and you are pushing buttons and going to the next step without explaining what you just did and why.
This is an overpriced piece of rock for $3,899 ! Common, now people will spend that kind of money, for having an intervalometer? The dynamic range is bullshit. Focusing, a fast moving bird, is lame, at the best !! Canon, stop repacking legacy instruments with gimmicky feature !
+Sandeep Krishnan (Sandy) Why do you care what other people are shooting? Maybe you should be concerned with your own photo output rather than sticking your head in other people's decisions.
Sandeep Krishnan That's great. You continue to waste your time arguing about hardware specs with strangers like a grade schooler, while the rest of us will actually enjoy working on our photography.
Like I said, feel free to do what you want, while the rest of us who actually care about photography work on taking great shots, not arguing with strangers on the internet about specs. While you're off in the corner raving like a crazy person and worrying about what's the latest and greatest (which will be inevitably surpassed), we're all shaking our heads and improving our work.
My mind is blown by the family photos and interval timer. Wow I have no idea why I never thought of this. 5D3 setup tonight for family photos tomorrow!
Hi Toby. Love the time lapse of the ferry backing in and unloading.
The first thing that I change is to disable "shoot without card". I never need or want to shoot my camera without having a card installed...
Yours video clear my mind about set up thank you
At last some one showing what to do.Instead of telling you what to do. Thanks
Thanks for this information!
Glad it was helpful!
I prefer using af:on too af OFF using index finger to meter and focus...leaving my thumb too stop a.f. or move my focus point with the multi controller.
Really good information for the beginners.. thanks a lot again :)
Not just beginners.
Love the video, Thanks a bunch
Excellent tips thanks!
what amazing different levels of clouds on your last time lapse!
+FaSCoRP I love how that looks too.
Nice video and initial suggestions for the buttons swapping, but what does intervalometer/time-lapse have to do with having to change them first thing when getting a camera? Maybe I'm missing something.......
--Interesting on the Timelaps. I've always wanted todo that.
Toby, definitely gotta set up the joystick to control the AF point. That's a very crucial feature of the 7D, 5D and 1D series cameras.
+Kevin DiOssi I completely forgot that isn't the default. Yes - I do that too. Thanks!
PhotoRec Toby I figured that too. It's such a great setup to use ergonomically and what makes the Canon "X"D series cameras stand out from others in my eyes/use.
+Kevin DiOssi It is and I am not shooting lots with the Sony a7Rii and REALLY miss the easy focus point selection on the Canon.
LOL
very useful video, thank you Toby!

Hi:
I just bought the Canon 5DS camera and switched from JPG to RAW. But the photos won't transfer to my 128 GB SD card to transfer them to my computer.
WHY?
Thank you.
Very informative and practical . Thank you.
Nice tips I also like to set joystick to direct af point selection and dof button when you hold it down to change af single to servo..
+Tomas Ramoska Yes. I should have included that because I do that too. Never used the DOF button like that, interesting idea and could be useful to me.
Awesome thanks for that. Great video great info Cheers
I also change the rate button to protect image.
awesome video! thanks for sharing.
Hi I am trying to take square pictures for my web site using my 1300d eos canon and I also bought new macro lence with lights, ,is there settings for this,as my pictures I am taking are terrible ,all different sizes etc
Is the grain so bad in dark areas as some people say?Great video!
How long video can recording?
Great video!
I dont have interval timer on my 5d m3. Do you know why.
EXCELLENT TIPS THANKS
that feature is not on my mark 3, what gives

Interval brilliant.
very good stuff!
Thanks Terry!
I just can't seem to get used to using back button focusing. I am so trained with the half press over the past 20 or so years of autofocus I just can't seem to untrain myself.

does the t5i have the movie timelaps as well and those other options to change?

2-3 seconds is a great interval to start with.
Great, thanks for the reply and the video/tutorial.
Toby, do you agree with the DXO assessment of this of this camera. Indeed it is ranked at about 22nd on their list?
+Rick Mentore You can make freaking fantastic images with this camera. Do I agree that when quantified via certain Dxo criteria it ranks 22 - sure. hard to debate that. I will be talking about this on our next live show. Thanks.

+Jakub Handzuš LOL I know - what the heck did I say that triggered it?!?!
how to take a slow motion video on an eos 80D!!?
Hi
nice video.. Can you kindly let me know the use of various other options which we get while customizing the AF On button.I will really appreciate it.Thanks :-)
Nope. He's not going to tell you anything.
Great to know, thanks 🙄🤓😎
why i don't see any Nikon in your videos ?
Thanks very nice video again. I can't find time lapse option on my 70d...is there such thing on 70d ???
+Mathieu Couture never mind...found my answer
+Mathieu Couture Yep sorry. Look into the triggertrap system. th-cam.com/video/LJLDOt6ewks/w-d-xo.html
Awesome!
Nice video. If you could recommend a tripod for a Konva slider, motor and battery pack what tripod would you recommend? Thank you.

If I install Magic Lantern in my Canon 1300D, does it void the warranty?
It likely does - petapixel.com/2013/05/27/will-custom-firmware-void-my-warranty-canon-nikon-and-panasonic-respond/
Can you please tell me that which camera do you use for recording your videos and which camera you used for recording this video please please +PhotoRecToby
+fake account I used the Sony a7r2 for this video.

+PhotoRec Toby thank you Toby
Cool
ho toby i just want to ask if my 70d has this movie time laps option?
+MrSanzuku not, it doesn't.
+Giuseppe Pipia thanks man...
+MrSanzuku but magic lantern does
+MonkeyButt117FTW, is it safe? im afraid that if i do something wrong it would break my camera. i dont even install magic lantern with my t3i because im not sure i could do it right.. btw thanks a lot bro... maybe its time for me to try magic lantern.

People always forget to mention that you loose the ability to shoot-at-focus when you set back-button-focus-only. :/ It's really only good for people that have a lot of time for composition, not really good for sports and such
The title should say that the video is about Canon cameras. Otherwise it's just clickbait.
Lol weddings
