As a professional photographer I have been using the Canon 5D mark III DSLR camera since 2012 covering assignments all over the world. These days I shoot with the R5 system but still pick up the mark 3 for the odd shoot. In this video I share how I set this camera up and talk about the various settings I use. Anyone with an interest in the Canon 5d mark 3 should find something of interest here but as ever its just based on my personal experience and opinion so feel free to jump into the comments if you have anything worth sharing! Thanks for watching. Roy Riley 2022

Long time 5D III user here, so most of your settings make perfect sense to me (though we can always learn and adjust a bit more). As always, good information provided and credit to you Roy for continually being helpful to answer peoples questions. Have a good day sir!

I got mine from park camera £760 last year it’s a joke the pictures darker them my cheap 600d and raw pictures grainy and tinted really worst of money. I loved my cheap camera but this full frame is joke in lowlights outdoors photos are great but for indoor it’s not what i expected.

I'm an old gear lover. Received one Canon 5D Mark III from my son two days ago as gift. I'm already using 5D Classic and 5DII with deep satisfaction. Therefore, 5DIII is bound to be a great DSLR. He used it extensively for his professional work and clicked around 214,000 shots. But I'm confident, this will keep clicking much longer.
Being a hobbyist, I would like to use it for all my purposes that includes landscape, street and wildlife photography. For action shots, I already own 1DIV and 7D. I'm confident, 5DIII will also work great in this genre.
    Thank you for the video.

I could speak to so many things in this video, but I'll keep it short:
I LOVE Peak Design's system! I have the red discs attached to every camera I own, so I can use the same strap on whatever camera I am using for the day. You can even buy just the anchors and put them on any other strap you like. I shot a wedding with the 5D Mark III and a 24-105 lens with a Peak Design strap, and I never felt like the anchors weren't substantial enough. I've also carried the same camera/lens while hiking through the woods MANY times, and never had a worry about the strap and anchors. Their products are VERY high quality.
I came from the film days, so I like to keep it simple, but I do use a few of the auto functions. I figure that the camera manufacturers spend a LOT of time and money on R&D, and I have found that the metering systems are amazing. I generally set my cameras to aperture priority, because aperture is the setting I am most concerned about. Sometimes I will set the ISO, but I mostly leave it on auto. And even though this camera has a million auto focus points, I usually only use the single center point.
    Again, thanks for the videos!

I've been shooting an R6 since it came out, but was looking for an older pro body to take on sketchier locations, boats, etc. I picked up a 5DIII at my local camera shop for 500USD. It's a tank and the images are amazing. I certainly prefer it with certain lenses, and I enjoy using the old "focus/recompose" method of how I learned rather than relying on my R6's incredible tracking AF (which is necessary for some things, but sometimes it's too easy, and therefore not as rewarding, creatively)
Great vid, as usual. Love your perspective.

@@RoyRiley i didnt say it is not reasonable quality but its nowhere near compared at iso 200 level. When you shoot wedding you dont shoot at iso 800 and give client pictures for what they paid for. not with 5d mark 3 , yes with canon r6 or r5.I shoot at raw only and with no noise reduction applied there is a huge diffrence shooting at iso 200 compared to 800. you cant deny that. I use canon 24-70mm f2.8L mark 2 lens and sigma 85mm f1.4 art. At iso 800 noise is visible if not applying noise reduction . at iso 200 there is no noise at all. This is indoor night event photography. When somebody pays you 2000usd you dont give them pictures with noise . you want to give them highest quality photos .There is plenty videos of 5d mark 3 with iso 800 all over youtube and noise is visible .If you say that picture quality is same with iso 800 compaed to iso 200 that is your opinion. It is so much cleaner image at low iso levels . This is not 2022 camera that handles low light that well. canon r6 and r5 are good up to iso 2000 noise dont exist at all. but at 5d mark 3 oh yes it exist

I got 5 dmk3 f2.8L 24/70 and a 600d kit lens 18/55 both exact same setting at f8 the 600d pictures are brighter and sharper I am really surprised that having a full frame is supposed to be good for low light and sharper it’s not at all . All I think is good about a old full frame they are more solid build and more expensive in my case it’s definitely not higher in quality.

a number of years ago, my strap broke on vacation in LA, and i picked up a big blue Peak Design. with the thick pad. I had a canon 7D at the time.. and it was quite comfortable. and i continued on my vacation with my rose colored glasses on.
fast forward.. quite a few vacations and locally shooting pics for the better part of a decade my biggest complaints are:
    1. its the original with the thick pad... forget storing it easily, even in my SKB case its a pain, let alone going on vacation with it. VERY annoying
    2. camera slides and freely swings when you bend down. i cant count how many times my nice camera and lens has almost dinged off of a metal surface i happened to be bending down by, or concrete walls etc... imo the biggest pain in the butt with these straps
    3. the smaller strap they offer, isnt as comfortable with my full frame and zoom lens as its bigger brother for longer walks, but its easier to pack, but suffers the same sliding issue (2) the original slide had/has.
    4. neither can be used if you're wearing back pack or even a shoulder bag without a great deal of hassle and headache.
i had honestly grown to hate all straps known to man, currently i use two of the Peak Design anchors on the right side of my 5dmark III, i then loop a very strong wound paracord wrist strap over them.
I have recently given black rapid a try and have to say, the slide stops alone to prevent my camera slinging and sliding into solid objects is a solid win for me. im not keen on how it connects to the camera, and am currently trying to "make it my own" by fashioning it to connect to the camera's strap lugs, and not the tripod nut.
this is my own experience with it, others experience i'm sure are better, or worse than mine, but this is mine. I dont see any professional photographer ever using this, (i work wedding venues a lot), but i see a metric ton of black rapids and the like.. its comfortable and literally addresses all the problems i have with peak designs.
but if given the choice.. i'll just carry mine with my home made wrist strap lol.

My 5DMk11 is very well thought out in favor of the consumer and the Mk111 forgets the phrase KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID and IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT??? LETS MAKE IT SO DIFFICULT THAT ONLY A COMPUTER GENIUS CAN FIGURE OUT THE 100'S OF CHANGES.
If the programmers had smarts they would create software packages that the owner could install and make minor tweaks for example a Snow skiing package, a Rodeo package, Under water etc. Of course the programmer would have to be a brilliant Digital photographer. Then maybe Digital camera sales would not be FLUSHED DOWN THE TOILET because of the great cell phones that are doing your programing job??? KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID...

    Greetings! I purchased a used 5DMarkiii. It's a love/hate relationship.
When I put a battery in the camera, and use it, the battery is fine, otherwise, it zaps the battery.
Like the next day, it's dead.
I don't feel safe to use the camera for a wedding. Checked filmware and said it was up to date. Any suggestions, Roy?
I need to work with the settings to - works great for a car show, but not for movement.
My 70D shoots better in low light situations where i can't get the other to register.

Thanks so much Roy. I have the R5 and R6 and while I enjoy them both, I miss my 5D Mark III and several of my EF lenses. They were terrific! Sure, the R5 and R6 give you more keepers, but there’s nothing about my photos from the DSLR that are that much, if any worse, than the mirrorless cameras. Sorry that I ever sold the 5D and bought into mirrorless. I’m a hobbyist so the mirrorless cameras have way more bells and whistles than I need

Great comment! Thank You 🙏 I wonder how many oeople feel the same after making the mirrorless switch. It’s taken me about 6 months of everyday use to get comfortable with the R5. Still when I pick up the 5d3 it feels more comfortable and more familiar than any mirrorless camera.. For me it’s all about using the right tool for the job and the focussing improvements alone on the R5 make it a great tool. Good luck with your photography and remember it’s all a journey, enjoy what you currently have, while you have it and adjust accordingly further down the line.. best wishes. Roy

Today I have and use a Canon 5D Mark iii as my main camera besides my iPhone. I use auto ISO 100-400. I shoot in manual mode. I don't shoot RAW rather I choose to shoot my photos in JPEG. I don't do any post editing so much to my photos. I mainly shoot flower n foliage photos. And some times buildings and clouds. Before I upgraded to the Canon 5D Mark iii, I used a Canon 5D Mark ii. I loved that camera. But I love the 5D Mark iii even more than the 5D Mark ii. In my experience the 5D Mark iii more intuitive to use as compared to the 5D Mark ii. The auto focus is way better on the 5D Mark iii as compared to the 5D Mark ii. Both the Cannon 5D Mark ii and 5D Mark iii take equally good photos in my opinion. The Canon 5D Mark ii only has one Compact Flash card slot in it. But the Canon 5D Mark iii has two card slots-Compact Flash, and SD card. I only use an SD card in my 5D Mark iii for convenience as my iMac has a SD card slot reader built in. Thus I don't need to use an external USB card reader to transfer my photos to my iMac.

The 5DIII is a rock-solid camera. It is my camera of choice when I am asked to do an 'event capture.' I will probably take more than 500 photos at one of those events. I might be inside and/or outside. I might be close to people or far away trying to get candid shots. I like it because the AF will be 'spot on' and as it is FF, my photos will have that distinctive look. It never fails me in those situations.

Interesting you talking about straps. I’ll sell you my old “EOS digital” strap from my 1Ds mkII if you want, it’s a lot more “weathered” than your 5D3 strap. 😉
Serious mode, I’m using a blackrapid sling because it’s super low key, works lovely under a long jacket and can conceal even a bulky fast 85 or 70-200 anchored off the collar because of the sling system it’s super fast to bring the camera up.

    • @RoyRiley
      @RoyRiley  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for the support! In my opinion Slightly better AF on the mk3 over the mk2. It’s certainly not a huge step up though and good technical skill from the user is by far the most important factor. Low light AF is a bit better and the overall speed and accuracy slightly improved but we are talking maybe 20% better rather than night and day.. my honest opinion.. stick with the Mk2 and make the very absolute best of it! @RoyRiley  ปีที่แล้ว

I just use plain old RAW on both cards. I’m not a fan of any of the compact or smaller RAW options. I just want as much data as possible. Often people will use one card for RAW and the other to catch JPEGs which I guess makes sense for some uses.

Hi Roy, one of the issues I came across with my Mkiii is inconsistent WB. Not sure why, never experienced it with my Mki or any other camera. Updated firmware and reset setting, etc. Anyway, may be useful to someone to know about setting Kelvin using the quick "Q" menu and setting with the wheelie dealie. Or setting WB shift. I shoot in RAW+JPG and really like the photos straight from camera, so this may not affect everyone. For me it was huge to find a workaround.
I bought an a7iii but still can't come to part with my Canons. I'd put the inages from the 5d Mkiii with the 100mm f1.8 up against anything and be happy. Fantastic cameras and a completely different feel (at least to me) that mirrorless can't quite capture, although all cameras seem to be amazing these days. Anyway, cheers mate.

Hey Roy, I've got a few question, a while ago, i baught a 5D Mark II, your video and the idea of it's history made me pulll the trigger for it, and now, i'm debating between upgrading my 50mm 1.4 from canon to a sigma 50mm 1.4 art,
    My question is....
What would you suggest? 5D3 or keep the 5d2 and upgrade lens?
As reference, i am a boudoir photographer and most of my shots are shot in manual focus,
Since i got the 5d2 i took over 350k shots on it, hahaha, my workhorse for a couple of years already :D

    • @johndavidg.3962
      @johndavidg.3962 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Jeffery. This come down to budget and requirement. 5d4 is the best but all the other cameras you mention are all very very capable. Bang for bucks the best value will probably be 5d3. 6d Mk1 is showing its age but still very capable. 6d2 I have not shot with so cannot comment. I think the truth here is that all of these cameras are very very good. With decent lenses, good technique and a creative eye they are all capable of producing amazing photographs in nearly any circumstance. If in doubt just stick with what you have and focus on getting the very best from it. Hope this helps. Roy

I have a love hate relationship with camera straps. With wildlife being my main interest I am often set up in hides or on tripods and in that situation a strap of any kind is most definitely a pain in the arse. However, there are other subjects and situations where I need to hang a camera from a strap and that is why I have moved over to the Peak Design straps. Being able to unclip the strap easily and quickly is a definite benefit. The little button attachments remain fixed to bodies and lenses where appropriate and a strap can be quickly attached when required. I was initially sceptical about these button fixings but I have to say that I have not had any problems with them to date and hopefully never will. They are constructed in such a way that if they should become worn a different colour shows through and thus warns you to change it.
The straps themselves are very easily and smoothly adjusted which is great at a concert or sports event where I may want to have two cameras hanging at different levels.
Apologies for long winded comment on a strap, something I would never have expected to do 🙄.

I recently bought a used 5D Mark iii and based my decision on watching videos like yours, so thank you! I am a newbie and do learn best visually however, so this video isn't really helping as I need to SEE how you are going about setting it up within the camera menus et al.
I am still trying to figure out how to use this camera in a way that best utilizes what it has to offer for both photography and video. I am currently in college for Multimedia Communications and just did a video production course and struggled mightily throughout most of the quarter because I couldn't get the dang camera to AF correctly or consistently- I researched so many different channels trying to figure out my issues and find the settings that I needed, discovered that many of the camera settings the previous owner had used were the opposite of what I needed, but indeed learned a ton in the process, just wish it hadn't been so stressful.
In any case, I appreciate your continued love of this camera and will look into more of your videos to see if you have some that can help me understand it better all the way around. The built-in mic is extremely noisy but had to use it for class last quarter and do my best to fix the sound in PPro later as I couldn't get my new lav mic kit to work with it, think the mic kit is faulty (sure of it because it didn't work with my Iphone either) and wondering if you can suggest a budget-friendly mic kit that works well with this camera.
    Sorry so verbose, thanks again!
    Cat-

Hi Roy, I know that I may be a little late to the party where the 5D Mk3 is concerned, but I have recently added this camera to my armoury and I was looking for a quick guide to how best set the camera up in the menu. Your video fit the bill perfectly, so thank you very much indeed.

Hi, try ThinkTank straps if you're looking for a grippy strap (no horrid logos either, my total pet hate!). I used many of your settings on my Canon dslrs, though I've been keen on autoISO for a long time, and Program mode too (I don't care what the others say...!). The R5 took me months to set up as I like, so many options. So I'll wait for your R5 settings video to see if I've missed anything!

Cheers Andrew! I do not know why I have not tried Thinktank straps.. I use loads of their gear and it’s always been very good. In particular I have the airport roller which has covered a fair few miles but still works perfectly. Thanks for the heads up.. The R5 setting video will be an absolute monster!

I use the slide. The premium, not the lite. It’s great Roy. A bit bulky compared to the original strap. But it so easy to use, comfortable and versatile… Really. With the clips it becomes interchangeable, can use the same strap with every camera easy… And it is strong, seems like a seatbelt…😊 haven’t tried anging my one weight! 😂 Here in Portugal cost 60€.
Hood to see you back Roy! KRegards

I have been shooting with 5D Mark II for ages. your video was one of the best I have seen regarding settings. I would love mirrorless for the great focus and less weight, but nearing retirement , I will do my best to make my equipment work. Thanks for Your Video!

So my 5d MK3 has arrived..... Wow it's an awesome bit of kit 👍🏻. Now watching this video again as a great "tutorial". So glad I found this Chanel. It's just so easy to watch and learn from. It's like an open university video lecture only way cooler 👍🏻. Superb presentation skills and so interesting to watch. I know I will be referring to this particular video frequently as I become acquainted with my 5dmk3. Thanks again for your superb quality yet practical and down to earth content. Really appreciated.

Thanks Roy . I recently picked up one of these to replace a 6d (destroyed in a flood) and to compliment my 7dmkii. I love the image quality . I am gradually coming to terms with the control lay out .
I use auto iso for birds in flight photography where high shutter speed at a specific aperture is often important .
Very happy with my purchase .

Thanks for your thoughts on this Anthony. Maybe I will give auto ISO a throw next time I’m shooting. Feel like I’m missing out! R

I have used BlackRapid Camera Harnesses and Straps for years and I will trust no other; check 'em out. I also still rock 2 Mk 3s in our business and still love them after all these years.

I just bought a mkiii. Is there any downside to using the quick focus mode with liveview?
