2023 and this video is still helping people, myself just now. I just purchased my first DSLR and it's a Mark iii 5d (second hand). I know it's an old camera but I'm loving the quality. Thanks for posting this video alllllll those years ago Chris.
It doesn’t matter how old the camera is man. If it did the job then it will do the job now. it’s all about your glass and your skills. I have a Canon 5D Mark iii and an old canon T4i and I could do some magic on that old camera. Sometimes too many options aren’t good.
Thanks for a useful video. I just bought my camera and so much to learn from it. Done photography since a kid in 60s and this is most advanced camera I bought. Still using film too. Cheers
Learn to take advantage of the amazing focus abilities of this camera and I don't see a problem. I use a 7D as well as the 5D III in so many situations and types of photography, including live bands and weddings and do not have any focusing issues once I worked out which selections to use in which situations.
This is a great, concise video on the autofocus features. I was making myself nuts trying to figure it out. Now I understand how to work my new camera's autofocus. Thank you
Thank you for this tutorial. I have looked at the manual but I must be daft as I couldn't use it at all. I only got the camera last week and have been using it successfully but have no idea what it is doing. This has been a great help to me.
Actually AF system is greatly improved. No more just point and shoot on auto. Different situations require different parameters and the 5D Mark III lets you tailor the AF system. If you watched this video your doing the right thing, learning how to use the camera. Learn its features and embrace them to improve you photos and video. There is a learning curve but Canon has given you a tool with many features. Get familiar with your camera and don't be intimidated. Its a great camera.
You could try that along with an aperture setting that allows greater depth of field. Try f/11 or numerically higher and see what happens. Remember that the distance between the subjects comes into play here. The greater the distance between them the greater the depth of field will need to be. You will need to experiment some to find what will work best. Aperture is the key here! Adjust shutter speed and/or ISO to get the proper exposure. I hope that helps and good luck!
This was really useful. thank you. I am shooting my sons sports day......so lots of moving people... Having played your tutorial and others, can you possibly give me a steer on whether I have this right! I have changed the back focus button. I have got it on shutter speed 1000 I have it in A1 servo I have changed the AF area selection to the one with 9 points (should I change this I wonder) I would also like to photograph him playing rugby where there are lots of little chaps running all over the place! Thank you.
Hi Christopher! I just purchased my first full frame DSLR, this Mark III. I have used the 60D for years and love it. There is a lot more to learn on this baby! ;-) Thanks for putting these videos on youtube; they've been very helpful. I'm having an issue though. When I started playing this morning, I was not having this issue, so I must have selected something to cause it. When I push the AF Point Selection button, I do not get the AF points displayed. Right now, when I push this button, "SEL AF" displays on the top LCD panel. Any ideas?? THANKS!
Hi Christopher, I would like to translate the audio from your video and post it in Brazilian Portuguese. Do you authorize me to do so? I found your content very cool, and I commit to giving you credit in the post. Many people in my circle don't speak English.
i agree 100% with you....you are smart...and also not smart...because you put a lot of energy into someones smartass comment....a comment that you cannot even take seriously......but it does show that you want to help other people (-: i just bought me the eos5d mark3.....i wish i knew all new functions haha
Manual focusing works well for static subjects, like landscapes, buildings, and portraits, but many of the other subjects that I shoot that move really fast would not give me as many keepers without knowing how to use the many types of AF settings.
Hello and thanks for the video! I'm having trouble taking close up portrait photos and I would like to which focus point setting I should use to be able to focus clients both eyes. Thanks in advance.
+Keiko Kikuchi-Appleby - You always should focus on the eye closest to the lens using single point focus. the smaller the lens aperture (higher f/stop) the deeper the depth of field to focus both eyes. This also depends on the mm of the lens you are using and how close you are to the subject. The closer you are the shallower the dept of field. It's complicated....but practice.
I had that same lens, it failed to be tack sharp no matter what body camera in the Canon family I put it on. It's the lens. Go with the Canon 50mm 1.4 (or even the 1.2 or 1.8), much better results.
I bought a new 5D3 and a Sigma mm f1/4 lens, it does not seem to be focusing well, I shot many pictures using a single point focus, shooting still portraits at 1.4, and many shots were not in focus, and none of them looked nail sharp, I am wondering if it is the lens, or if there is another focus setting that would work better for a 50 mmm 1.4 lens ? thanks
+Adrian David Payne It is a simulated viewfinder. The video is about how the various features of the Canon 5D Mark III work. It isn't about composition or anything like that.
+Logical Prepper I know it isn't about composition, however, if that were your shot you were presented with, you would have to recompose because there is no Focus Point available up there where it should be.
It's interesting that the AF picks the CLOSEST point, which is often meaningless, and a real crap-shoot in the field. Since Canon has forsaken the concept of Depth of Field with no help from tiny, unreadable lens scales, they should provide the option of finding both the closest focus point found in an array AND the farthest, then for a given f-stop, calculate focus for optimum depth of field, just like we did 100 years ago. I always carry a paper depth of field table I got from an old Kodak manual--really helps. And I always use the one-spot focus option, so I can AIM that at what I'm shooting. What's next, auto composition?
I'm shooting fast prime lenses at weddings and concerts, wide open, on the 5D3, and I'm overall insanely unhappy with the AF system. I'm missing shots because I don't have the time to deal with Canons AF system and selecting my focus points is by NO MEANS quick and easy... and focusing, then re-composing isn't an option. I would switch back to Nikon because of this, however, I need to keep the camera due to its abilities and the fact it's EOS mount. Any suggestions?
I dont get it. I take the tennis ball throw it to my dog I chose continuos shooting and dog is out of focus how do I get the bloody thing to follow the dog and focus ?
i use my 5d mkiii in car mount in video mode, and would love to get all picture in focus , is that even possible, if so , how do i do it please . Ps. i put the camera behind me , so you can actually see what;s inside my convertible plus view outside . But the trouble is that i can't figure it out how to get inside of my car and view outside in focus while i drive
So you bought a 3k camera and dont know *** about photography.. Take the widest lens you have, put your camera on aperture priority (its AV on the dial) and put the aperture at something like f11 or higher. Now focus on something half way of what you want to be in focus like front of the hood and then switch focus to manual so it will stay there.
TheKnutselaar oh no, i knew all that, i just thought there is some extra settings i don't know about but hey ho, thanks for help anyways . i've got 16-35 so pretty wide
TheKnutselaar also while you here. Do you know is 5d got otion of auto focus , so the focus will follow me every time when i get in front of it ? Sometimes when i'm on my own i wanna do some pics or vids but you can;t rotate screen plus i want to be further away from camera
Can someone tell me how i capture the monitor and focusings points while shooting to make a review? i want to show how a lens focus in real time to upload in youtube
So, I dindt get it. IF you have a mark III and dont know how to use it because its an expensive and profissional camera, yes, you have a manual, so why should you sell it? What about learning digital photography from a professional camera, reading the manual and experiencing from the best on market? Thanks for the tutorial. I must be doing something wrong though because I follow your steps but when I use the M-Fn button nothing changes ... *sad face*
Hmmm if you're shooting with a mk iii you shouldn't really be autofocus. It's a high end professional camera. I mean admittedly you can use AF for very few shooting styles, but mostly a professional I would consider to be using manual focus.
ah extremely funny ..you dont know me. I work as a professional photographer and I have read thousand books of photography, made courses, got diploma, got experience and got money. I have worked with nikon and pentax ad now I have changed to canon. And well my dear, before anything I read the manual from beginning to end + the books about 5d. you MIGHT be the one who needs some help.if you want me to explain something about the camera, feel free to ask :) here goes 15 years of photography.

Thanks man!!! After how many years of owning a 5D mark iii I now found a solution from this video. Very helpful😀😀😀
Great tutorial. I was lost adjusting the AF mode before watching this. Thanks!
Absolutely fabulous narration of the camera controls. Well explained, and great video display to accompany.
Learn to take advantage of the amazing focus abilities of this camera and I don't see a problem.

God Bless you for this Tutorial.

Mine doesn't work... AF will work, but none of these ever come on
Much easier to have a verbal description than reading a book

I would love it. people have been complaining about canon's focusing forever, and I have to agree that it's been pretty awful until now.
do you think that Canon will ever come out with an autofocus firmware update to make the 5Dlll focus better and faster in Low light like the 6D
Pretty Helpful. thanks
Why can't you move the AF points to the Top of the frame. Example at 1:12 Not a single Focus Point on his Face!

If you have a 5DMIII and don't know how to use it, then you should return it, get your money back and get a T3i. Plus you've always got a manual.
M-FN does not work when i press it in it turns the illuminated AF points off, only works by scrolling the main dial.
i use my 5d mkiii in car mount in video mode, and would love to get all picture in focus , is that even possible, if so , how do i do it please . Very helpful. Thank you.
I don't get focus points turning red at all is it because this video is a couple of years old
Good point and I agree entirely.
I have flashing vertical rows of AF points and can't get rid of them!!!

There are some new lens deals on www.photocamz.com/lenses for anyone looking for prime or zoom lenses.
I don't think that's possible.... Maybe it is?

ahahha what about learning?
Read the manual. I have no idea where you are pulling all this other stuff from. You need help child.
Really helpful, thank you!
