  • Big Red’s Rebel cruiser line grows this season with the addition of the 2021 Rebel 1100 ($9,999 as tested, with optional Dual Clutch Transmission). Honda’s latest cruiser builds upon the Rebel’s lovable character by adding power and high-end electronic rider aids, including Honda’s exclusive DCT.

    Rebels are renowned for their friendly demeanor and ease of use by virtually any sized rider, short or tall. And the 1100 continues the format. Mid-foot controls, a low seat, and slim powertrain make for a bike that’s easy to straddle, especially for smaller riders. Although a tad narrow, the handlebar has a pleasing upright bend, that will work well for most. Overall the controls are well-proportioned but a tad cramped for a 6-foot-tall rider.
    Honda’s optional $700 DCT is a game changer for novice and more experienced riders alike. It takes the worry out of synchronized clutch and gear-shifting action replacing it with a fully automated experience, much like a scooter. Still, riders can select each of the six gears, manually via paddle-like buttons on the left-hand-side switch gear. A monochrome round-face dash display keeps tabs on vehicle vitals and is easy to read at a glance.
    Steadily refined over the last 11 years, Honda’s DCT programming is so intuitive to control input and so fast in operation (we’re especially fond of its racebike-like auto-blip downshift feature) that it will make you think twice about riding a manual-transmission-equipped motorcycle. Another plus: the system is virtually maintenance-free. Our only gripe is that the gearbox doesn’t offer the Africa Twin adventure bike’s “G switch,” enabling faster (and more sporty feeling) clutch engagement.
    With around 80 hp available at the 16-inch Dunlop rear tire, the Rebel 1100 zips around town with enough oomph to lift the front wheel in first gear. Although to be fair, it feels less punchy than the Africa Twin’s engine (read the report in the 2020 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sport ES DCT MC Commute Review) from which it is borrowed.
    The 1,084cc (66-cubic-inch) parallel twin employs an uneven firing order designed to mimic the firing pulses of a V-twin. Since its Honda, the character of the engine is smoother and less rowdy as compared to other 270/540-degree firing interval parallel twins we’ve ridden (i.e., Aprilia’s 660, KTM’s LC8c, and Yamaha’s CP2 power units). Still, it’s rambunctious enough to put a smile on your face, and we appreciate its calculated level of engine vibration that doesn’t become annoying after a couple of hours in the saddle. Adjustable engine power, traction, and engine-brake control make for a tailored riding experience. With a push of a button the Rebel can go from mild to wild. Cruise control is also standard.
    In spite of its 509-pound curb weight (claimed), in typical Rebel fashion it impresses with how light and maneuverable it feels in motion. It hugs turns well and offers a surprisingly lean angle before the footpegs kiss asphalt. The calibration of the suspension is equally pleasing and overall ride quality is astounding, even over rough, broken pavement despite having less than 4 inches of rear suspension travel. The Rebel 1100 is the most versatile riding mid-control cruiser we’ve ever ridden. Well done, Big Red.
    Twin hydraulic disc brakes do a fine job of slowing down the Rebel and include IMU-powered ABS. Although styling-wise we wished the Rebel used a twin front disc setup, we can’t knock the performance of the solo setup. We also appreciated the power and response of the rear brake.
    Aside from its exemplary performance, the Rebel offers a high level of build quality. Though we wish it would have done a better job of hiding the instrument and switch gear wiring. Designed with customization in mind, a wide range of OE accessories are available and Honda says the Rebel can be stripped easily. Aftermarket companies like Burly and Vance & Hines also offer a variety of bolt-on accessories to make the Rebel yours.

      Except for the location which is stupid
      that's something from the past that should be completely abandoned
      one day the key will get bent when you brush your left knee against it and you will be stranded
      or something else hanging from it will fall off and you will never know
      that's the dumbest "RETRO" thing they did with this bike
      and if they could put a keyless ignition on the ADV 150... There should've been one on this bike
      they said they only did it to clean up the area by the speedometer but obviously a proximity T would've done the same thing
      this was laziness and they "CHEAPED" out on this aspect of the bike

    It's kind of unfortunate that he has to stay with the Honda nanny. I feel like we would have got a better feel for this bike had it not been through stop in go traffic. I do appreciate your videos, as we have the same build and height. I was looking at one of these as a sportster competitor but I was most concerned about how it would fit a tallish rider. Hopefully you can get it back some other time and get some

      It says it’s an “MC Commute” video. I got a great feel for how well the Rebel 1100 with the DCT would do as a daily driver - very good, from what I see here. That’d be most of my riding, so I’m glad to get a real-word look at it.

      lol @ nanny. when i was "shopping" a 'honda nanny' had to go with me. i was interested in the Fury. i told them if i cant open it up, feel its potential, ride, handling etc id turn around, bring it back and buy bike elsewhere. i was told Honda protocols etc. When we got a cpl blocks away the rep stopped at a red light and said "ok...ride it your way and ill just follow you. just dont take off and lose me." i rode "my" way. when we got close to the dealer on the way bk he waved me over and he took the lead. at the dealership he said "thats how you should demo ride dude! but u didnt hear it from me ok?" i bought the bike that hour lol 19 Fury

    As a shorter rider who favors mid controls rather than the typical foot-forward controls of most cruisers, this could just be the bike for me. I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing one in person very soon. Thanks for the review.

    Im happy that Honda made this bike. When I was shopping around in 2018 for a small cruiser with mid controls, there were only 4 bikes for me to choose from; Kawasaki Vulcan 650, HD 883 & 1200, and Yamaha Bolt. I liked the HD 1200 so I bought it. But, after the excitement of a new bike wore off, it really was an underpowered bike for a 1200cc motor. The suspension was bad too. For 10k, i felt like i bought a new bike that was built in the 90s. After learning the history of Sportsters, i realized i did buy a bike from the 90's. But that Evo motor still brings a smile to my face. Even though the Honda 1100 isnt a v-twin, it could be what the Sportster should've been for 2021 in terms of power, electronics and suspension.

    No missed shifts with DCT. Looked what happened to manuals in cars. Young people do not want clutches. Automatics will pull more people into motorcycles

    Glad to see an initial review so soon. I hope you get a chance to do a regular MC Commute on a manual version as that bike is on my short list for my next purchase in 4 years or so! It would be really awesome if it also had the touring fairing and saddlebags.

      @@dharokthewretched7373 yeah, it sounds like they set the big Rebel up for folks like you....the Indian Scout is setup much the same - keep the revs low and power delivery is pretty tame, but rev it out and she really hauls butt up above about 5000 rpm. Of course you get a little more electronics and quite a different style with the Honda than the Indian. Price wise it's hard to beat the Rebel 1100.

      @@brianhofmeister1279 Thank you. That's what it seemed like. Feels like a bike to "grow into" for those who, despite being a beginner wouldn't be irresponsible and aren't too afraid. I'd respect the bike, as it would be a new thing for me, but I'm comfortable on the road and watching for others. I drive an 18 wheeler for a living, and that gives me confidence on the road. I'd probably just hang out in the small streets while I learn to ride though before I even touch the high way haha.
      My goal is to first, go to a harley davison training course and see if I'd even like to ride after I get the endorsement.

      @@dharokthewretched7373 take an MSF course and you can skip the driving exam and get your endorsement by passing the class. Two birds, one stone. Bikes are a great way to unwind and take in the scenery in a whole new way! I hope you get your license, get a bike and enjoy yourself for many years.     $10k is a great price!
    I bought my Africa Twin new, as a one-year hold-over model, for $9700, and I feel like I stole the bike. Getting a new, liter-class Honda cruiser for $10k is as close to an honest steal as you'll get.

      The Sportster 883 is already out of the ballpark, IMO by performance alone the Rebel 1100 should go up against the Scout and maybe a new Vulcan (unless Kawa is gonna come out with the obscenely powerful new Vulcan)

    Would you characterize it as a accommodating step up from the 500cc? If someone was getting back into motorcycles after many years and had been looking at the Rebel 500, would you consider this 1100cc version easily managed?

      The 1100 is easily managed. Using rain mode cuts back power by a lot, for those who prefer that.

    Per usual, ill go with the Honda. Rode another Harley recently and when I give it 100% it only gives me 50% of what I'm hoping to feel 😑

    Cool bike, but to a lot of people chain maintenance gets old if you actually ride a lot and ride in all weather. (Yes, I know adventure bikes are often chain-drive, but that is a different market segment). If targeting Harley, a belt drive would be helpful.

      Agree completely. I have a 107 Fat Bob and love it, but this Honda is a temptation...except for that chain. I have a warrantee issue coming up with the condensation building up on warm sunny days at the bottom of the cluster. As long as I don't get any grief from Harley on this I'm staying with the Fat Bob. Otherwise, that Rebel is looking real nice.

      I'm waiting for the day where we no longer need to maintain are chains all the time. Didn't someone make a chain like that? Though from what I understand its not wide spread yet.

      I have 13,000 miles of complete neglect on my Xring chain. Chain maintenance is overrated in my personal experience. Chain maintenance got old for me too so that’s the path I took with my current chain 😆

    I like your videos but man you sure aren't a poster child for rider safety. I think I saw you use a turn signal one time while turning or changing lanes, you spend too much time riding one hand in traffic, and noticed you also like to wait till the last minute and brake hard at stops. Almost took out the lead rider at about 17:15 of the vid as you flew up beside them as they were turning right at the stop sign, last minute correction on their part kept them from running over your front wheel. But I do like your videos and they are informative. Safe travels to you sir.

      Once you learn how to operate it you'll find out how it has a far quicker response than clutch shifting. You can still shift gears and automatic mode. You don't even have to let off the throttle to paddle shift. there's no timing.

    Great Review Adam! I must say I love this engine with it's 270 degree crankshaft. It would be a natural move up for someone that has a 500 Rebel as you said. But! Does it really fit into the traditional cruiser market? I would have to say no. The traditional cruiser market is and has always been dominated by Vee Twins. Although it does have several things going for it. Price, Honda reliability along with good looks and sound. I would stick with a manual transmission but DCT could be a big plus for some. Honda just may have something.

    I wish these reviews would mention a few more things. Is there a center stand? Does it come with a tool kit? What kind of valves and what's the valve check/adjust interval? No center stand on a chain driven bike is a deal breaker for me. Surely there's time in a 23 minute video to mention those things!

      From what I've heard, the DCT adds quite a bit of weight, which is why it's only available on the 1100.

    Excellent and informative video.
    I got 12,000 miles on my Rebel 1100cc DCT and still love it. Most of the time I am using the manual custom mode. It's a lot of fun on the Jersey shore with some flamenco guitar music in my helmet.

    That thing is a hell of a deal. with the DCT it is 9,999USD, that includes all the electronics and cruise control. 9,299USD without the DCT, still has all the electronics and cruise control. So for the price of an 883 Sportster or Indian scout 60, you're getting the most technologically advanced cruiser on the market and still will leave most cruisers in the dust as it has 90hp and non-DCT is under 500lbs, DCT is a hair over 500lbs.

      I was definitely asking for it. I've had the 500 for a few years, and always wanted them to put either the Africa Twin engine or the CB650 engine into it to make it a fully complete bike. Now they have, and I'm definitely going to fork over the money I've been telling them they should shut up and take.

    Don't like the automatic transmission. I like to shift gears myself with the use of a clutch and a foot shifter. Some people may find this appealing though since it's easy to ride.

I'm used to using the friction zone on conventional motorcycle transmissions for slow speed manoeuvres. Just curious... How is the slow-speed manoeuvring with the DCT?

I'm thinking of getting one in a few months as a first time rider, it was either the Rebel 1100, Shadow Phantom, or Indian scout 60 but since I want to use it for daily commute instead of my truck I eliminated the Indian Scout and I think the Shadow Phantom doesn't have enough power

    Waheed, need 1100 test 2, u solo. Wheelies, Ln splittin, 70's in 45 zone. Ask Tiger how that works out. Test 1-brain, test 2-no brain, and all ur other test. But, bottom line ur O.K. I did do 110 on My Honda 500-4 in 1971. Turn myself in?

    Adam, until now I saw many poor "journalistic" materials, anyway, your is one of the most poorest ever made it! First of all, It's unbelievable that you have not mentioned from the very beginning that "somebody" else will change gears instead of you, and you will be able to enjoy the view and the ride, also to comment in a very relaxing way mumbo-jambo things because of this unique system named DCT. Also, you forget to mentioned from the very begging that Rebel 1100 is the only one in his class with this brilliant dual clutch transmission. Well, maybe you have to apologize to everybody, including to Honda, for this important missed ...

    Funny. You don’t know what torque is. You confuse inertia and torque. The bigger flywheel doesn’t create more torque. A flywheel simply stores energy. It doesn’t produce energy. The. Offer flywheel simply reduces the twitchiness of the motor. Because doing that reduces the ability of the motor to power the motorcycle and rider at the same level of linear acceleration as the Africa Twin, they lengthened the stroke of the motor. A little increase of Stroke creates a higher degree of torque than a little increase in bore. The longer stroke means per unit of time there will be fewer reciprocations.
    Anyway. Believe me. They wanted the bike to be less twitchy but maintain acceleration. And to run at lower rpms. Cruisers don’t typically like high revving motors. They buzz. For hours. Drone on. Like being in an airplane in 1953.

    These ”media ride" days are a joke. I am surprised they don't actually attach a leash to you guys. I hope you're getting paid to ride.. So what if they give you the freedom to ride for four hours. It would be well worth it to me if half the bikes wrecked.
