Wow, amazing work! They couldn't be a proper match for a freakin' machine mistakenly called human, moving at 60-120mph, able to carry a whole armoury with it, reacting within milliseconds and using explosives to boost itself. It was rather a mercy move not to interact much with monsters.
That idea of using a Spawn to open the bars in E4M8 is incredible... but I can understand why it took a TAS to see it being used in a whole run. Looks easy to screw up.
Yeah he's shooting his shotgun at exact times to manipulate RNG to make the spawn act as he wants as optimally as possible. Basically 1 in a hundred million chance of doing this legit in an RTA run. When I originally found this it was annoying just to get him to clip through the wall, let alone doing so quickly. I actually found out spawn clipping was a thing by complete accident by making troll/kaizo Quake maps a few years back lol. I kept seeing spawns get into rooms I never put them in and was like "wtf are they doing here? how?" Scrags are also notorious for getting OOB. Though it's yet to be seen if there's a route that abuses that for a faster time anywhere in any official maps/expansions.
as someone that probably put 2000 hours of play into this game from 1997 to 2001. My childhood included fragging thousands on E1M1, and I'll always cherish that lol. Really enjoyed watching the game get destroyed by this TAS. Great video, well done.

Correct me if I am wrong. In e1m1, the tas performed the strafe jump so fast to the point we barely see the screen shaking otherwise how did quake guy slinged himself out of the elevator so fast?
I improved it to 17 seconds later, there's a newer vid on my channel for e1m1 ER. Doesn't take away from the WR though, it's extremely impressive regardless
I assume you are talking about the last level of episode 2. There's a bug with the LG where the two side beams it shoots are calculated completely incorrectly and often extend far beyond the view of the player. Usually it isnt noticable, but with a precise setup , the bug allows the TAS to shoot the vore "through the wall".
I think there is something wrong with the link you have in the tas quake repository, the one in the about page. It redirected me 3-4 times through some sketchy looking domains.
At some points, it seemed as player did get a lot less damage from grenade/rocket boosts at low HP. Is there any trick used to reduce the damage while keeping the strength of the boost or it's me having false memories of weapons dealing higher damage?
A lot of the boosts are close to max range for taking damage, but yea you do get less boost when you take less damage. For the nightmare run I completed more recently (which is better optimized than this run all around) I was a bit more greedy and took more damage from the boosts.
any reason for not using the rocket jump to suspended exit teleporter on map end (instead of waiting for the spiked ball)? anyway, quite impressive TAS run

I guess it's a testament to Quake's programming how TAS run doesn't simply phase through walls like many other games.
