Thanks for the review! I have a question that’s a spoiler: Why did Sigrid get to go to Valhalla but Hervor goes to the underworld? They both used cursed weapons so that part made no sense to me. If anyone can answer this question please let me know 🙃
From the writer Eric Carrasco on twitter "All the weapons have their own curse - at the end, Hel says, "Antler will have its own outcome." Sigrid's spear damns her to kill the wrong god. Hervor's denies her her dying wish, the Seid-Kona's paired knives are shared between her and Egill, but we know how that goes..." "I probably shouldn't have answered this so quickly - Zack and I wanted people debating why and how the curses worked, but I saw enough people confused to feel like I ought to say something."
Good review. I finally finished the show today, and it's clear that at this point in his career Zack is only interested in telling one story with only the slightest of variations. It's all about getting the band together for a job. Justice League was getting the band together but it's superheroes. Army of the Dead was getting the band together but it's a zombie apocalypse. Rebel Moon was getting the band together but its Star Wars. This is getting the band together but its God of War. It's all the same derivative bullshit padded out by excessive slow motion, junior high school level philosophical musings, massive exposition dumps in lieu of character development, and gratuitous violence and sexual content that Zack confuses for maturity. There are aspects of Twilight of the Gods that're actually not terrible. The animation is mostly good (though some episodes look better than others), and the voice cast is fine. But it's just so dull. In 8 episodes you don't really get to know most of the characters or why they'd even go on this journey with Sigrid in the first place. I don't care when anyone dies, because I don't know them. It's such a bore! Just watch Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal instead.
It’s gotta just be a name thing, because I can’t see any other reason why Zach Snyder would have still gotten hired for this. A toddler could have told you that a story at this scale with this many characters was just not possible in 8 episodes. The pacing is legitimately the core of every issue in this show and I have to imagine a part of it is Zach’s poor patience. The Zach meat riders are in full force, which sucks because that means they’ve never been exposed to anything better before. It’s fine to like the show, but to honestly argue it isn’t incredibly flawed is just dishonest.
Not to undercut some of the more well placed criticism, but the Jesus thing does have some symbolic value here. The Prose Edda and other sources on Norse mythology are all works from the post-christianization of the Icelandic countries they originate from. And a lot of synchronization was added by those authors to try and link the two in some way. Importantly to this story, Snori the author of the Prose Edda pushes the idea that Baldur is a per-abrhamic Christ archetype. Who after Ragnarok would return to be the primary God of the world. I suspect Snyder is invoking this concept intentionally.
Sleep well knowing that you CAN be wrong, but still have good content. Enjoyed some your other takes but this one is at the very least extremely odd and misplaced.
Brother ain't no right or wrong, this shit is my opinion 😭 Regardless, I appreciate the words, but "odd and misplaced is wild" . The series had some objectively jarring issues that I cannot believe you can ignore.

It's no hate talk the show just got stupid and clunky at the end special in episode 8, things just started happening, I loved the start of the show and the characteristics of the so-called Greek gods as douchebags, but the end is just so confusing, and if you want to say this was to set up a second season, then it was handled terrible and it feels like the second season doesn't have that much of a story to tell if screwing over the audience in season one is the only way to get them interested in it. All and all 6/10

This is some Castlevania type mid show. Everyone getting fooled by the visuals don't recognize good writing if its tattooed on their skin. Compared to great story telling like Blue eye samurai or arcane this show feels like a highschool kid recreating a great story from memory.
I tried, but just couldn't get down with Blue Eyed Samurai. I did enjoy the first couple seasons of Castlevania though. Definitely better than Blue Eyed or this new Twilight cringe sex show.
No I 100% agree. I watched that Thera part and after that I put the series down. I honestly felt disgusted because like you said it gave grooming or diddy vibes. I only returned because I saw a thumbnail of Odin encountering Jesus on video which I thought would be interesting. The whole series was filled with pointless scenes like that unfortunately - I'm not 10 years old and have to be constantly shown that to stay hooked, a good story is good enough
I don't understand the hate. After rebel moon I didn't have good vibes about this but i decided ti give it a try and I liked it a lot.. far from being perfect, episode six for example was pretty boring but overall it was good!
My interactions with Snyder's movies look always the same: 1. I'm watching his movie/series 2. I really enjoy it 3. I'm finding hidden details giving the story hidden meaning 4. I'm starting making theories 5. I'm opening YT to see if someone made video which will allow me to learn about details I missed and... 6. All I see are rants trying to create false narration that given movie/series was a flop and had bad story. I could understand that people are unable to understand the meaning of "Martha scene", that people don't see hidden sidestory in Army of the Dead, that people are unable to understand that Rebel Moon is exacly what was promissed to us and even more, but I don't get what people can have against Twilight of the Gods? It's the best interpretation of the Norse mythology we had so far, with probably the best version of Loki
@@aminebenabbas3593 Actually, he was pretty similar to the pre-MCU Marvel version of this character, when he was still a villain. It's good to see at last a version of Loki which is able to both succeed in manipulating others and fight like a god :)
People don't critise the mythology, i have seen mostly praises for it's portrayel and for the visuals. What is critisized are the characters and the story. I personally didn't feel any chemistry between them and any group dynamic was lacking. I think this whole project could have been a lot better if Snyder was just a visual director and let other people handle story and dialog.
@@ferrarikluk2680 Other ppl did handle story and dialog 😑. Synder was just directing. The characters were good and their chemistry to me was awesome each one def played off each other. Especially the 2 would be husband and wife.
The last battle was a little wonky and the sex was meaningless, but still I wouldn't call the show mid... the characters were great, the writing, dialogues and story were awesome most of the time. I get that people get pissed when you change religion but it's fiction so whatever, I don't understand the hate, it's a pretty solid show.
honestly I actually thought the threesome was well placed. The archer girl hasn't experienced anything at all in her life. She didn't have a single story to tell. She was a servant. And going to war the next day vs gods. If we didn't know better they all would have died. Giving her an experience like that is pretty wholesome
I’m not going to say the show is bad. I think it’s a 7/10, but I think it’s a lot more style over substance. But hey, you don’t have to be that deep when you’re pretty.
To each his own, I definitely think it isn't for everybody, but I strongly disagree with your overall take here. I think your bias migut be clouding your judgment a bit. I admit that I am generally a fan of most of his movies to one degree or another, but I haven't really liked any of his other Netflix work, so I'm hardly a blind fanboy. I can appreciate someone not liking that he used the Seven Samurai formula mixed with his personal "extraness' yet again. That's a fair personal quibble on the level of personal preference, but it's not an actual problem with the thing in and of itself when judged on its own merits, especially when it is actually done fairly well overall. Characters were almost all very well defined, and most of them were interesting with believable motivations that I at least found to be conpelling. The animation was well done, the art style was unique. I even think it had a few moments of genuinely great dialog writing. I also think it had some interesting ideas and things to say about the mythology and comparative religion. My only criticisms would be that some of the gratuity seemed a bit excessive when it wasn't needed, and, although still good imo, parts of the middle felt a little too much like a side quest. Idk if this is an objective criticism or a matter of personal taste, but I would have paced some scenes a little bit more slowly because it felt like some scenes needed a little more room to breath in order to feed properly fleshed out, but that's a problem I have with a large number of modern movies and shows, not just here. Zack Snyder is an acquired taste. I think even his most diehard apologists should at least be able to admit that, and nothing about that changes here. I just think this is objectively a well made proeuction and the best thing he's made since at least Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021.
Yeah, like what the hell? With Odin showing up at the end of episode 6, I thought it was going to go down but nothing happens! In episode 7 starts with the main battle. Made me think I missed something.
Its funny to see and heard people ""rationalizing"" about Snyder work like people do the same with things they hate, but want to cope with it. "I hate this beacaue....~1h30m of essay later~but its not just a feeling, is rational ...guys."
Show was pretty good, the adult content wasn't needed.. some of the characters while two dimensional served there purpose and we're still likeable. The overarching narrative was great, even if it's treading same waters it's pretty good still
The last episode was the worst by a mile, the reason why you (and I ) got so invested till the last episode was because other people were directing till episode 8. Zack Snyder made the longest, most self indulgent and boring episode of the show. The show was ok (and even great sometimes) but he found a way to ruin it. Snyder is a hell of a man.
I honestly really liked this series. Definitely fun and something to turn off the brain for a bit. The only thing that was "jarring" was the sex scenes. I dont think they really added anything to the story and were not needed in any way. The "viking" theme is strong these days.
Im honestly enjoying this so far. The sex scenes are well placed... I think people forget that such things were very much a part of the culture. Raw, passionate and often. The threesome was especially amusing, i laughed harder than I meant XD i should have expected it. *Shrugs* to each their own

Its a 6/10. Its ok to watch. Good art, plot, characters for the most part. It bastardizes norse mythology, is predictable and rakes in some DEI points from blkrk. I quit after ep. 3
This is such a horseshit review if you can even call it that. It starts off immediately with a hate boner for snyder. Its like you wanted to hate this show. Just because snyder does team up films doesn't make it a formula. Each of them are completely different and have a completely different story. This is just lazy attenpts at critique. Also, edgy is a meaningless, lazy, parroted word that yall abuse. Him not sanitizing things for you doesn't make it edgy. You being uncomfortable with the violence, and the sex doesn't make it edgy. The story wasn't lackluster, and there was plenty of emotional weight behind it. What plot holes ?
I agree with this take 💯. Here's why he keeps getting funding: his stuff is entertaining. As MID as this series was...I binged it in a night. I liked what I saw. Was it good? No. The writing was average and the ending was terrible. But the ONE thing they did really well was an anti-Marvel version of Thor. Much closer to mythological version. And the fight scenes were well choreographed despite the fact all the plot armor the main character has. Snyder is the best bad director in Hollywood. Other than Rebel Moon he keeps making stuff I watch although it's not original. It's a guilty pleasure.
IF GOD DOESNT OPEN YOUR EYES !! , you can never UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE THE MEANING AND SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE OF SHOWING JESUS LORD OVER ALL gods in this Last episode ,, it will not just make sense to you becuz you’re using Human understanding to try and understand a spiritual matter
Its really not. The primary modern source of Norse mythology is the Prose Edda. Which was written by a Christian who wanted to synchronize Norse mythology with the Abrahamic mythos. The Same way Dante did with Greece-roman mythology in the Divine Comedy. A popular motif of writers in the 13th century it turns out as they attempted to reconcile national identity with the prominence of a foreign faith. Baldur as a risen God, son of the All-father who returns from hell to rule after Ragnarok was Snorri Sturluson's way of linking the Norse figures to the Abrahamic. Snyder is simply invoking that.

Sorry, but you can't fault Snyder for showing the parallels between Norse Gods and Christianity. It's an interesting topic for an adaptation of Norse Myths to explore. Both have been linked to each other and researches debate whether Norse Paganism influenced Christianity or if Christianity influenced Norse Paganism in its latter incarnations, such as the two sources written in 10th century when Scandinavia was already Christianized. Snyder did in one episode what the MCU was too scared to ever bring up in all of its existence, despite the fact that the notion of a Norse God existing in modern Christian world would create so much conflict around the world, it's rather scary to think about. But hey, I guess making Thor the butt of jokes was more important.
Definitly, very likely enough christian monks namely snorri did chrustianize that they are allowed to exist, including ragnarok very probable. Also the christian and that coexisting and influence. Thats all over europe with local christianity basically adapting similar "pagan" stuff to be inviting, but its a good topic. That doesnt need jeebus , just make baldur jeebus like in ragnarok

Hi, hello, greetings. I'm about to use this space to rant a bit about my feelings on this show. I am, by this point, sick and tiered of Norse Mythology, which I consider to be part of my heritage, being bastardized by Americans. It wasn't cool when marvel did it, and it's no better here. portraying the Asir, and especially Thor, as cartoonishly evil does nothing to elevate this series from the ethical complexities of Tom & Jerry. If anybody wants to know how people of Norse decent feel about this, if we assume there are any, let me tell you that it's at best a misappropriation and at worse a mockery. Never before have I wanted to bar a person from using Norse mythology as I have now. Goodbye and thank you for coming to my ted talk.
Why does everybody feel the need to turn the Norse Gods into the villains. This was just another piece of trash, to add to the ever growing pile of shitty attempts at norse myths.

I'm a zack snyder fan. I really like him and his films (i guess some of em). He's a top tier director when he's adapting a story that already exist. But he sucks when it comes to original ideas. I really hope he'll realise this and do something good. Insted of doing this twilight of the gods, he should've adapted Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology or something. What do you think about this? I really wanna know your opinion.
Im not familiar with Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology, but I am a supporter of the notion that Zack is a lot better when he's not involved in the writing/creation process. I enjoyed his take on the DCU, despite its flaws.
@@failureoncommand I too enjoyed DCEU. BvS UE is my favorite cbm. And some of his works such as 300 and Dawn of the Dead are simply a masterpiece. And if you're interested in Norse Mythology, I would recommend you to read Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology. It's a really good story ❤️
The battlefield was empty because the bodies were all claimed by Hel or the Valkyries. I get the feeling you were only half paying attention a lot of the time and missed some of that context. Everything in the show is consistent with the Eddas, so maybe it's a fault of Snyder's to presume that the audience would be familiar enough with the mythology to fill in the blanks. While I do agree that the pacing gets thrown off in the last three episodes, you're mostly complaining about irrelevant details. The point of episode 6 is to take the time to more fully understand the characters' histories and their values. It's the episode where it's revealed what Ulff's "black deed" was that binds him to the Seer. The Vanir don't besiege Asgard because it can't be besieged. The walls are too strong to be overcome, and the gods don't need access to farmlands to keep the food coming in, but the gates can still be breached by a strong enough force. That's what compels them to battle rather than sitting in their corners until Ragnarok. I wouldn't say that this is a great show, but IMO it's actually good and not just mediocre, if only for the novel way it reframes Norse mythology by questioning the power dynamics of a pagan pantheon. It's probably the best thing Zack Snyder's ever done, which only proves that he needs to be more limited as a creative and working more in concert with a team rather than treated as an auteur. If you let him indulge all his impulses then what we get is totally cliched juvenilia like Rebel Moon.
I may be confused what exactly in the video you're referring to, but when I said the battlefield was empty I was fixating upon the fact that it was unmanned and unguarded, no soldiers anywhere, which becomes particularly strange on the castle walls themselves. This has no bearing on the corpses, or the use of the word "siege", and I think I was pretty clear in conveying that. It confuses me that you decided to fixate on two irrelevant points in response. Episode 6 expanded the characters and dove further into their backstories. I don't think the way it did it counts as good storytelling. It was boring and killed the pacing for me. If you want to tell us this information, spread it out in spots of the story where it can be meaningful. Making a whole episode strictly so you can make your characters take turns spouting backstory/lore is lazy.
@@failureoncommand It's diagetic. Zach Snyder has always been obsessed with melodramatic stories about god-like figures, and nothing is more melodramatic than the actual stories about the gods. It's perfectly within his wheelhouse to make something novel with that setup.

Yeah, I agree. Here. I'm not talking about this show but in general. Here we go. 'Adult' doesn't just mean gor3 and s3x. It's about mature themes and complex storytelling. Why don't companies understand that adult animation can be about more than just shock value? I'm not against gor3 or s3x, but the rest of the story needs to be for a mature audience too. Like 'Blacksad'! It has violence and erotic scenes, but the overall story is complex and thought-provoking, making it unsuitable for children - because kids would think it's boring. I don't have much to say about this show. I'll try to watch everything and see how they handle adult content.

@@failureoncommand You are correct. I just felt like it accomplished what it set to and it felt like something that deserves appreciation amongst the myriad of awful shows getting pumped nowadays.

The show was absolutely amazing. Don't know what you're crying about. Just bcoz you hate Snyder doesn't give you license to disregard the hardwork of all the amazing creators & artists involved with the show. He was only a co creator & the lead writer is Eric Carraso.
Exactly
It's no hate talk the show just got stupid and clunky at the end special in episode 8, things just started happening, I loved the start of the show and the characteristics of the so-called Greek gods as douchebags, but the end is just so confusing, and if you want to say this was to set up a second season, then it was handled terrible and it feels like the second season doesn't have that much of a story to tell if screwing over the audience in season one is the only way to get them interested in it.
All and all 6/10
@@hakkimalhaki2825 Just bcoz you didn't get the ending doesn't mean the show is bad. You're in youtube. It's easy to find ending explained videos if you don't get it properly.
@Uxas-k5b I hear I do, but if your audience doesn't get the message of your show, it's kinda of a bad presentation on the director's part, I shouldn't have to go watch a video of someone else, we watched the same show, usually ending explained TH-camrs look up info outside the show to explain, and I just don't feel like my entertainment feeling like an assignment

This is some Castlevania type mid show. Everyone getting fooled by the visuals don't recognize good writing if its tattooed on their skin. Compared to great story telling like Blue eye samurai or arcane this show feels like a highschool kid recreating a great story from memory.
Yeah no
I couldn't stand blue eyed samurai because of the voice acting
I tried, but just couldn't get down with Blue Eyed Samurai. I did enjoy the first couple seasons of Castlevania though. Definitely better than Blue Eyed or this new Twilight cringe sex show.

It was good, I loved the characters and the lore
Too brutal?

Tell that to Berserk, Tokyo Ghoul and Attack on Titans
No I 100% agree. I watched that Thera part and after that I put the series down. I honestly felt disgusted because like you said it gave grooming or diddy vibes. I only returned because I saw a thumbnail of Odin encountering Jesus on video which I thought would be interesting. The whole series was filled with pointless scenes like that unfortunately - I'm not 10 years old and have to be constantly shown that to stay hooked, a good story is good enough
My point exactly
I don't understand the hate. After rebel moon I didn't have good vibes about this but i decided ti give it a try and I liked it a lot.. far from being perfect, episode six for example was pretty boring but overall it was good!
i watched it without watching a review, and you're right, its all over the place dont make sense
My interactions with Snyder's movies look always the same:
1. I'm watching his movie/series
2. I really enjoy it
3. I'm finding hidden details giving the story hidden meaning
4. I'm starting making theories
Loki was straight fire
@@aminebenabbas3593 Actually, he was pretty similar to the pre-MCU Marvel version of this character, when he was still a villain. It's good to see at last a version of Loki which is able to both succeed in manipulating others and fight like a god :)
Exactly 💯
The DRAGON FIGHT! sorry, love that part
honestly I actually thought the threesome was well placed. The archer girl hasn't experienced anything at all in her life. She didn't have a single story to tell. She was a servant. And going to war the next day vs gods. If we didn't know better they all would have died. Giving her an experience like that is pretty wholesome
@@bubsenseijebe2993 I drew that threesome. It was certainly an experience. I tried not make it too graphic

I’m not going to say the show is bad. I think it’s a 7/10, but I think it’s a lot more style over substance. But hey, you don’t have to be that deep when you’re pretty.

Yall are ridiculous trolls.
"Boo hoo everyone who disagrees with my godly and holy opinion is an incel". Grow up nigga.

Is it the best show? No. Is it cool as hell? Yes. Its worth watching 2 episodes - especially if you're a norse mythology fan. :)

*Shrugs* to each their own
Overall, I thought the series was great; however, that last sex scene was borderline grooming 😢. Sigrid might as well be Ghislaine Maxwell.
@@isaacshaw1914 I'm on episode....four... I think? Don't think I got to that one. I'm seeing inconsistencies and things that wouldn't normally make sense.... But the style of the animation makes it easy to forgive. I think people expect a little too much out of a cartoon animation lol

No. The writing was average and the ending was terrible. But the ONE thing they did really well was an anti-Marvel version of Thor. Much closer to mythological version. And the fight scenes were well choreographed despite the fact all the plot armor the main character has. Snyder is the best bad director in Hollywood.

Zack who?
Boy this review isn’t accurate. It’s a really good show like an 8/10 type show
Sorry, but you can't fault Snyder for showing the parallels between Norse Gods and Christianity.
If youre in a Norse world Christianity and catholism lost you clown. Those religions snuffed such pagan practices.

You don't realize this is an adaptation? This is not original. This is Ring Cycle. He uses it heavily in many of his films

Thor in this is a billion times more power than the MCU Thor this is how a god should be being able to electronically teleport the first episode where a giant goes to slash him with his sword he teleports through the giant and the giant is split in half Thor was crazy powerful and Odin being able to split himself into three beings is a copy of Yeshua-Jesus YHWH-Yahweh and the holy spirit but seeing my god and king coming to overpower Odin was beyond awesome I said wait a second that's my king interacting with Odin and opening his eye when he touched his head
