I would know cuz i have been doing exactly that, i got EU4 from Epic games and have been getting literally any mod, including Steam ones.

Nevermind am just dumb I have to do it the old fashioned way sadge Also the nahuatl religion is insane and I would recommend sticking with it even in MPs so many military buffs. +10% morale of armies and +5% discipline

Gotchu brother, i had internal conflicts and bankruptcy. Had to take one for the team to continue the tradition (totally not an excuse for being bad at the game)
Staying Nahuatl probably would have been better to keep the reforms. Plus, you could have agreed with France to try to push themselves colonizing to get a province bordering you as quickly as possible. The way you were expanding was basically the correct way to do it, but can be improved. Yes, reduce them all to OPMs, but then cycle between 2 sets of 5 OPM vassals to reform as quickly as possible. Never ever annex as pre-reformation Aztecs, and never finish a war without vassalizing. Ideally, while animist, you keep the minimum number of troops to defend yourself, in order to build up a massive war chest for when you swap back to Nahuatl. If you do it right, you can become a powerhouse on par with the Ottomans.
Amazing video! Just in case you decide to play Aztec again in the future, you might not have realised but your Doom increases based on your number of provinces. So you wanna keep it low whilst passing reforms. Really messed me up the first time I tried playing Aztec!
I dont have all the DLC but in my version with the Dorado expansion included I can adopt instutitions as aztecs without changing to animist, very strange.
