  • Iran-backed groups connect to form a land bridge across the Middle East and form an alliance that Tehran calls the ‘Axis of Resistance.’ This land bridge can be used to transport equipment and personnel, but also allows for positions in Iraq and Syria to attack U.S. interests or threaten Israel closer to its borders.
WSJ explains what to know about the alliance that includes Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.

It is the country sitting on the nexus between the West and Tehran, has an overseas office for Hamas and Taliban. It’s the key interlocutor for hostage release.

WSJ forgot to explain the difference between Sunni and Shia, which is important in understanding Iran's connections to all these groups and others, except Hamas, which is a Sunni group. That is an important consideration. Why would a Sunni group be tied to a Shia regional power? For example, while Turkey, Egypt and Jordan are Sunni countries, Iran is Shia. It is an important distinction, for the US and Israel single-handedly seem to be managing to unify Sunni and Shia, a quite remarkable feat since it has rarely happened.

The US has been active in the Middle East for several decades, mainly to protect its national security interests and to support its regional allies. Some of the main reasons for US involvement in the Middle East are:
To prevent a hostile power from controlling the region’s oil reserves and using them as a weapon against the US and its allies1.
To deter and counter threats from Iran, which has been pursuing nuclear weapons and supporting proxy groups that destabilize the region23.
To fight against terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda and ISIS, which have launched attacks on the US and its partners, and to prevent them from establishing safe havens in the region24.
To promote peace and stability among the countries in the region, especially between Israel and its Arab neighbors, and to resolve conflicts through diplomacy12.
To foster economic and security integration among the US partners in the region, such as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the GCC+3, and to enhance their cooperation on global challenges such as climate change, food security, and health1.
To uphold human rights and democratic values in the region, and to support the aspirations of the people for political and social reforms23.
These are some of the general reasons for US involvement in the Middle East, but they may vary depending on the specific context and situation. The US also faces many challenges and trade-offs in pursuing its interests and goals in the region, and its policies and strategies may change over time.

Eventually, people get tired of outside influences in their lands, such as the US, which if the US hadn't been trying to just destablize the region in first place this kind of thing may not have happened, but the US abuses it status and power and this is the result. Gaza was the last straw, apparently.

No matter how you slice it, US dominance is over, except in Europe, until the Europeans also wake up and elect people who care about their countries sovereignty

Europe simply *obeys* the United States. This strategy has preserved their lives and livelihoods, but only time will tell if they are going to fair well when the American Empire falls.
