The Geek Critique I know you probably get this ALL THE TIME, Honey? but I SWEAR you are the spitting image of Bray Wyatt!! Lmiao. wow!! (A Wrestler in case you don't follow wrestling. Lol.) 💜 💜 💜
Matt formerly from SuperBestFriendsPlay *sniff* sent me, I'm loving these videos! And the Metroid videos are on point LOVE THAT COVARR! You were 100% right about DKC3. I played 2 and 3 as an adult & man 3 is OKAY, but not great like the others. At least it's not DK64 a shallow clone of Banjo-Kazooie. I was immediately disappointed when you couldn't jump on enemies, one of my favorite things in DKC was bouncing off enemies in rapid succession. I still love Banjo-Kazooie but DK64 shouldn't be a padded-out, busy work Banjo, it should be a DKC in 3D. IT WASN'T, as everyone needs to know.
I like the fact that when Chad talks about DKC3, he doesn’t just say “DKC3”, he just says; “donkeykongcountry3dixiekongsdoubletrouble” as fast as he can
Especially since he sounds a lot like James Woods. Am I wrong when I say that? I definitely hear some resemblance. Definitely not what I expected but that's not a bad thing!
Just came here to say that I LOVED Donkey Konga. I was a Gamestop manager about a year after it came out and I was able to snatch four congos for a few bucks. I used to bring the game out at parties and folks really did get into it. This lasted for like 4 years. I would love to see an arcade version of the game.
I mean all the critique is on spot but after high school, getting ripped on a few jazz cigarettes, and jamming on some fake bongos was great. Yeah, it was dumb but I'll never forget it.
ShayMay What's going on with your channel, Shay Baby? I get nothing from you now! you are one of my top 3 TH-camrs! unbreak my heart, honey. please come back. do it for an loyal Irish girl. 😢 💜 💜🍀 💜 💜 😢
I was surprised you didn't talk about King of Swing or Jungle Climber. Provided those were past the buyout era, but they feel like the products of the Rare buyout era. I'm glad you liked Jungle Beat. So much fun on the Wii and pretty underrated if you ask me.
I LOVED Jungle Beat. Maxing out your combos and finding hidden banana trails was incredibly addicting. Plus the bongos actually added a great visceral feeling to the combat and platforming. I loved whaling on all those enemy Kong’s and trying to figure out their fighting styles in those punch-out style boss fights. I’d love to experience it again with those particular controls.
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is probably my favorite DK game, unless Donkey Kong '94 counts. A lot of people seem thrown off by the bongos, and don't seem to understand that it's focused on playing for score with actual platforming taking a back seat, but goddamn is it unique and fun to play when you set aside that isn't going to be and isn't trying to be DKC.
loving binge watching all these for the first time and enjoy your analysis but as an honest critique i would avoid deferring from those elements of the video in favor of weird scripted conversations on camera lol
Wait wait, is the plot literally DK and Diddy seeking a fortune to buy bananas despite the fact that they live on an island where you can find a lifetime supply just outside your house?
Listens to the DK RAP... ... and quick and nimble and quick and nimble and quick and nimble and quick and nimble and quick and nimble and quick and nimble...
nintendo needs to bring back that version of donkey kong racing. i would love to race with the animal buddies. it would be interesting to see how they pull off squawks
I almost never played Donkey Konga using the Bongos. But I played it much, especially the second part. I still like the songs from this game, even if I normally don't like mainstream songs ;)
To make thinks clear. It is never a bad idea to expand your franchise. Look at Diddy Kong Racing. It may have only Diddy in it. But it still holds the Kong name. Donkey Konga is not a bad idea, just poorly executed. The real problem is the lack of a true Title to the franchise. Look at Fallout. I want a good ISOmetric Fallout game again. I also want another Fallout Tactics. There is nothing wrong with having ISOmetric Fallouts, First Person Fallouts, Diablo like Fallouts or even Racing and Card spin-offs. Expand your franchise, make the games work and the right people will buy it. Just don't neglect your main route, where your Franchise originated from. That is what pisses people off.
you should look into WHY Rare was allowed to be bought by Nintendo. Rare wasn't a perfect company by any means and had numerous problems getting projects off the ground. Plus the fact that i'm pretty sure a lot of the really good people working at Rare had left by 20001-2002. Also, Nintendo was running at a loss the year Rare was bought. Nintendo propped up Rare quite a bit. A lot of people seem to have... glossed over Rare's last several years with Nintendo in their memories. Do you really think Nintendo just up and abandoned a partnership/partial ownership of a critically acclaimed studio to a direct competitor? A lot of people imagine all of these incredible sequels that could have been, but... Rare was going to shit well before Microsoft bought them. Most of their projects were way behind schedule and they were hemorrhaging staff. What would Rare have done if they had never reached an agreement with Microsoft? Continued their decline. There's never been any indication that Microsoft notably influenced the development of games like Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, or Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Barring Viva Pinata Rare spent the last 16 years dropping mostly forgettable games, with the odd outright bad game mixed in. Hopefully Sea of Thieves will turn things around for them.
Man I loved Jungle Beat. Got all the platinum crests and just loved its style. The boss fights against the monkeys were great and it’s shocking how well it controlled with the Bongos. Never played any of the Konga games though.
I can see why some would look at Donkey Konga who are Donkey Kong fans and absolutely hate it and what it did to the series...I loved it and it was the main reason I re-bought a GameCube back in the day. The music was not perfect and the 1st had better music than the 2nd, but it was a blast to play.
It's good to see a new Geek Critique video. I forgot how much I dug listening to you talk about this stuff. Although I gotta admit, using the bongos as a controllers is really awesome, and I initally had a comment praising Donkey Konga until I realised I had confused it with Jungle Beat, which I DO think is a cool idea (although I admit, I wasn't around for its release, and can see why people might be disappointed by it). (This is why I hate the reaction to Federation Force. Comes off less like people expressing extreme disinterest in a game, and more like a bunch of whiny pissbabies). Are we gonna get any more DK videos, or is this the last one?
There's a second part to this one already up on Patreon, and it'll come out here next week. After that, I will definitely do Returns and Tropical Freeze at some point, but I'm undecided exactly what I want to do next.
*EDIT*: Thinking more on it, they've kept Diddy Kong after all these years, a creation of Rare's.. I guess I'm just bummed we haven't gotten the Kremlings in more recent titles, as well as how Metroid and the Prime titles are being treated I don't buy the whole "not fresh" thing about the Kremlings from Koizumi's quote at 9:20. I think the real reason they dropped the Kremlings stems from Japan's (or Nintendo of Japan's) attitude toward other cultures contributing to their series directly. Granted I am in no way Japanese despite my old, weebie username; I just can't understand why they would make such a major decision without getting input from fans around the world. Yoshio Sakamoto of Metroid may have intentionally did the same with the Prime series with Other M, which Nintendo surely knows by know how much other countries love, by changing lore (or even ignoring) in Prime. I've also watched a few videos from Japanese people and people living there and there's an issue of the culture thinking mostly of their own country.. Granted, DKC Returns series is enjoyable regardless and we might not have these great games and series (at least in the same form) without Ninty
Imagine. A dense 3D Donkey Kong game on his island. Broader and better than Donkey Kong 64. You can swing from vines. Sneak around caves and such. It could be great
Man, hearing people hate on Donkey Konga makes me kinda sad, but I totally understand it: I never played the US version. As you said, each version had their own track list and the Japanese track lists made the game worth playing. To better explain Donkey Konga, in Japan there's an awesome music game series called Taiko no Tatsujin which involves slamming a giant Taiko Drum. It's a blast and people love it. Donkey Konga is literally the exact same game from the exact same team, just with bongos. BUT, I was never that big of a DK fan. I like music games more, so it just...made sense to me. EDIT: Oh and checking the tracklists on Wikipedia, it appears Donkey Konga 3 featured a BUNCH of unlockable NES game music.
This was great guys! Very entertaining and very true!! All I wanted from the GameCube was a good DK game and it never happened . It kind of scarred my childhood lol
It's so weird to hear actual swearing on a TGC video, even if it's coming from someone else. lol Anyway, it's really unfortunate that Donkey Kong Racing never came to be, it looked so promising. Honestly, games like Donkey Konga would probably not be that much jarring we there was still the main stuff to keep fans happy. Jungle Beat is good at least, even if it's very weird with its bosses and enemies, seriously, some of those bosses look outright disturbing and feel more like they came from Wario Land 3 or 4.
Damn. I was really enjoying these videos, but actually seeing u this time & that u chose to wear a ........tank top.. to record your video....it gives me great sorrow. And on your big guest star episode no less. I usually couldn't give two shits about what hosts wear, but it never occurred to me that one would do a video in his gym clothes. Turns out, it bothers me. And I used to live at the gym. Anyways, sorry for being rude as fuck, I just had to get that 0ut.
Goofdookie eh, more power to the man. a more formal tank top may have been more appropriate for the occasion, if one is being picky; perhaps one with a nerd logo of some type.
And in 2021, the 35th anniversary of Zelda, nintendo fans gets.... an HD version of Zelda Skyward Sword for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo never changes....
Just in case you didn't know and/or were curious, Temple O' Trunks is still up online to this day, even though it wasn't been updated in probably over a decade. The creator, Meri, is married to one of the guys who runs Kanzenshuu and frequently guest appears on their podcast.
Hey, the PAL version of Donkey Konga I have has TWO DK songs - the DK Rap and the DKC theme (both are the Smash Bros versions). Three DK songs if you count the Donkey Konga theme.
My heart goes out to Geek Critque for receiving that brunt of the violence that Donkey man commited , over a not so perfect trilogy . All around I'd say : Rude . Period .
This was well worth the wait and I can't wait for Part 2~ I actually remember getting Donkey Konga 2 as a birthday present instead of a wii back in 2007 and I threw a tantrum like a dumb kid... Though looking back at it I think I was sorta in the right to not care for it. I remember my main issue for the game being that it was T rated due to language and I was really picky about that at the time (being nine years old). Honestly the only thing good to come out of the DKonga series was the fact that the JPN versions had a decently good soundtrack with some of the best Anime themes from the time, which is why I think it did well over there.
Ooh, I didn't know that. I'm sure having a worthwhile soundtrack contributed nicely to its popularity over there. I do really wish that we'd gotten some DKC tracks, though.
Microsoft really is an abysmally stupid company. I don't need a masters degree in business to know that buying up a creative company and their IP, and then having them make products with that IP that are just, so utterly off-base with everything that IP has been associated with is a terrible idea. I could understand the idea of milking the franchise for tons of crappy cash-in spinoff games, sure. But to do that, there needs to be a strong _core_ to spin off from. So the first thing you need to do is establish that, especially if the most recent game wasn't very well received. First you fix the core, _then_ you milk it until it dies of dehydration.
I like the part where they spend a third of the video either naming things the others have done like an advertisement or pretending to argue for 3 seconds
donkey konga holds a special place in my heart tho!! it was the first game tournament I entered when I was young and I got 2nd place !! I miss gamecrazy..😔😌
I'm surprised you didn't mention Taiko no Tatsujin / Taiko Drum Master and how Konga seems to be an attempt to bring that series to the west, alongside the PS2 game Too bad both it and Konga had nothing but awful covers of old pop music. What the fuck were they thinking???
DKC3 is my favorite. While I agree it's not as groundbreaking or amazing as the first two, it has a charm and identity all unto it's own that I really like. Sometimes, that's all you need.
Well, glad to see that you made a new video man.:) Honestly, I find Donkey Konga 1 & 2 okay at best. For the novelty those games had you could do worse but no way in hell would I replay those games. Although I find Jungle Beat a pretty underrated game honestly. Sure, it's no DKC but it's fun and addictive. And since it was made by the same people who would make Galaxy 1 & 2 it makes sense that I would like this game. Though yeah, keep up the great work man. I'm surprised the video already got a dislike I mean really? I'm guessing you ticked off somebody by saying Donkey Konga 1 & 2 is terrible.
At the end of the day, the N64 was a financial failure when compared to SNES and NES sales. Considering how heavily involved Rare was in the N64, Nintendo saw Rare as not being quite up to snuff, and unable to prevent poor sales.
Yeah, I'm convinced every Nintendo franchise goes through a dark period. DK went through it, and has come back thanks to Retro's magic. Metroid's gone through it twice now. Fire Emblem pretty much was stuck in a perpetual unknown status til as of late.
Oh, and this is late to the party, but the reason DK attacks the others is because they are trying to take over the Jungle. It's kinda like Super Mario Land 2 where Wario takes over Mario's Castle. They're home invaders.

ITS A MASTAHPIECE

Wait, *_that's_* what the Critique Geek looks like? Like a local independent wrestler?
Well that was unexpected.
Yeah, he looks a LOT like Tate Griffin
Especially since he sounds a lot like James Woods. Am I wrong when I say that? I definitely hear some resemblance. Definitely not what I expected but that's not a bad thing!
That should be his wrestling name. "Because he's gonna critique your ass!"
you see him on the sonic reviews. you can tell he's been getting swole.
he hot

Holy crap, an arcade version of Donkey Konga would be PERFECT. It makes the need for peripherals nonexistent!
Jungle beat was so fucking awesome
I mean all the critique is on spot but after high school, getting ripped on a few jazz cigarettes, and jamming on some fake bongos was great. Yeah, it was dumb but I'll never forget it.
No no no, you're playing Donkey Konga all wrong. You shout "ARSE" into the microphone, not clap!

ALL STAR WAS IN DONKEY KONGA????!!!!! My jaw dropped.
Donkey Konga 2, actually.
THRILLHO HOLY CRAP I NEED TO BREAK OUT MY COPY
Holy crap! Screw Beat Saber! I'm getting Donkey Konga!
7:21 All-Star...
in a Nintendo Game...
My life is complete...
I was surprised you didn't talk about King of Swing or Jungle Climber. Provided those were past the buyout era, but they feel like the products of the Rare buyout era.
I'm glad you liked Jungle Beat. So much fun on the Wii and pretty underrated if you ask me.
King of Swing, Jungle Climber, Barrel Blast, and the GBA ports are all in part 2! :)
The Geek Critique Sweet! Looking forward to it! Is Diddy Kong Racing DS going to be talked about briefly or is it not worth mentioning?
Hey, I said I'd mention every game where a Kong is playable except for cameo games, yeah? :D DKRDS is quite brief, but yeah, it's in there too!
The Geek Critique Okay. Just checking ;)
which version is better?
are you a professional wrestler?
I LOVED Jungle Beat. Maxing out your combos and finding hidden banana trails was incredibly addicting. Plus the bongos actually added a great visceral feeling to the combat and platforming. I loved whaling on all those enemy Kong’s and trying to figure out their fighting styles in those punch-out style boss fights. I’d love to experience it again with those particular controls.

Do people outside DKvine understand the term "buyout era"?
Probably not, but I think it's clear enough from context. Plus, since the actual guys who coined the term are present, I think it's appropriate.
loving binge watching all these for the first time and enjoy your analysis but as an honest critique i would avoid deferring from those elements of the video in favor of weird scripted conversations on camera lol
wait, what? Nintendo owned a friggin BASEBALL TEAM?!
Not really a fan of having guests show up in your videos but I'm glad you're now covering the Dk Buyout era.
Jungle Beat is a lot of fun! I even kinda enjoyed Donkey Konga...but I really enjoy rhythm games. The setlists were pretty janky.
Wait wait, is the plot literally DK and Diddy seeking a fortune to buy bananas despite the fact that they live on an island where you can find a lifetime supply just outside your house?
You can take a brisk walk outside DK’s house and already have enough potassium to kill a child
Listens to the DK RAP...

Fun Fact: in a Interview. Reggie hated Donkey Konga and is worried that it will hurt the DK Brand
I had 2 sets of bongos and I loved them. Donkey Konga and Jungle Beat are great
OMG, that All Star cover really is bad
Really pleased to see DKvine defend DKC3! It's a GREAT game!
Mr. Peterson, I have a question...
...Which Brothers Bear is best?
Power B Blue. It's his birthday.
07:13 Are you sure that this is DK and not shrek?

Love the Riker sit, done like a pro, 5/5
Haha, glad you liked it!
I'm not sure I was ready to see your face, but I'm guessing it was just to show off your arms
It made me uncomfortable
It's good to see a new Geek Critique video. I forgot how much I dug listening to you talk about this stuff.
Although I gotta admit, using the bongos as a controllers is really awesome, and I initally had a comment praising Donkey Konga until I realised I had confused it with Jungle Beat, which I DO think is a cool idea (although I admit, I wasn't around for its release, and can see why people might be disappointed by it).
(This is why I hate the reaction to Federation Force. Comes off less like people expressing extreme disinterest in a game, and more like a bunch of whiny pissbabies).

There's a second part to this one already up on Patreon, and it'll come out here next week. After that, I will definitely do Returns and Tropical Freeze at some point, but I'm undecided exactly what I want to do next.
Awesome. I look forward to watching it.
The skits with your guests... I... this wasn't my favorite.
I agree. It's honestly hard to rewatch these because these two just irritate me in a way I have trouble explaining.
It’s hard to act when you’re recording separately
So when does the actual review start. Been waiting for 3 minutes.
the fact that jungle beat still managed to be a good game, is a testament to how talented EAD Tokyo are.

As an expert at getting off 14 times to the Brothers Bear, I can affirm Hyle's statement.
dude, that punch sell. So good. 2012 Ziggler, and HBK would be proud.

I remember loving Jungle Beat on the Wii.
I wish Rare was never bought out. I'm still bitter about it to this day and I'm 30 lol.
So, DK Returns was basically inspired not by original trilogy, but the DK Jungle Beat?
Dude, DKC3 is just amazing!!
Very thoughtful and humorous, guys! I hope to see you and other DK Viner in future videos, Chad and Hyle!
Microsoft really is an abysmally stupid company. I burst a huge spot that was inside my ear whilst watching this video and it felt fantastic. A massive relief it had been irritating me for days.
I played Jungle Beat on the wii and liked it very much, even more than Country Returns
Donkey Konga still has a better playlist than Wii Music.
donkey konga holds a special place in my heart tho!! it was the first game tournament I entered when I was young and I got 2nd place !! I miss gamecrazy..😔😌
I'm surprised you didn't mention Taiko no Tatsujin / Taiko Drum Master and how Konga seems to be an attempt to bring that series to the west, alongside the PS2 game
Too bad both it and Konga had nothing but awful covers of old pop music. What the fuck were they thinking???
Great.
Now this makes me want to see a Donkey Konga 3(/4JP) centering around DKC music...
Dude i agree with everything DK related with you!Keep up the awesome work!
Donkey Konga: The series where Nintendo decided to straight troll us for THREE games.
And a Jungle Beat
Jungle Beat for the Wii is a fantastic game
wow, dude, watching your videos in order, you got jacked!
Kiddy Kong? Who likes the nerfed version of Diddy anyway?
I loved the DKC series but I loved Donkey Konga too since I like rhythm games and it was so different from the others
For a guy called The Geek Critique, you're fucking ripped af.
I don't think this was necessary.
Funny enough, I played DKC on GBC almost more than on SNES.
Because its portable
Don't you dare disrespect Donkey Konga, you monsters
DKC3 is my favorite. While I agree it's not as groundbreaking or amazing as the first two, it has a charm and identity all unto it's own that I really like. Sometimes, that's all you need.
I enjoyed _DK Jungle Beat_ on the Wii though I never could unlock all the special levels. There's not even a 100% save file on gameFAQs. Darn.
I like the donkey konga series and it pisses me off we never got the 3rd one released outside of Japan
Josh looks like a cute caveman... I'm into it
Well, glad to see that you made a new video man.:) Honestly, I find Donkey Konga 1 & 2 okay at best.
Hey man, good videos. Enjoying them very much. I would like to know the name of the music in 1:30 please!! Cheers
Wait, a DK version of McCartney's "Momma Miss America?!" This is my big discovery of the day.
They're home invaders.
the buyout era that you promised us for so long is finally here
If we could mod Donky Konga, then I would put in a cover of the Brinstar theme from Super Metroid.
I fucking loved Donkey Konga because at the time, it was the closest we had to a Taiko No Tatsujin, which was awesome to me
Looking good TGC, whatever exercises you're doing is working.
