Smash 64 may not have looked great, but it was a technical marvel. I'm glad to see that TGC saw that, the fact that it runs at a buttery smooth 60 framerate even at 4 players is pretty incredible for the N64.
Yeah and honestly knowing all the history it's a lot more understandable sakurai had very little to work with back then, and still turned out a pretty good product. It's honestly really inspirational.
10:05 *This* is what I love about the Super Smash Bros. games. Instead of having to memorize a lot then juggle multiple characters in memory, you only have a set of standard button combinations and you can always remember what they do for every character. ...of course, then there's characters like Jigglypuff where B+UP won't save you from falling...but still, it's mostly consistent and that makes SSB an easy fighting game that I can just jump into.
It has to be strange to think about, but I've analyzed this series a lot. I'm on my 6th watchthrough and I love how your re-telling is almost a history lesson, a time machine with a focus on the *feeling* of the time, not the events. The emotion and re-creation of how I *felt* when I was playing Mario Kart with my group of friends on a couch, or beating some ass in super smash bros really takes me to a place of calming bliss. I really like and appreciate this series, and all of them for that matter, just all for different reasons.
I'm honestly really surprised your channel doesn't have upwards of 500,00 subscribers, although I'm sure it eventually will. Your commentary and editing is superb, and seems almost professional. It reminds me of Gamexplain a lot. Also, each video is fresh and unique, with an interesting topic. Just wait until some of the right people find out about you, because you deserve tons of attention.
+WCPMachines Ditto on that thought, I was one of Emergency Awesome's first 1,000 or so subscribers(1.1 million subs now) and that show is not nearly as polished or, more importantly, good as this one. TGC will hit a million in the next year if these quality vids keep coming, mark my words
Smash 64's roster is the most balanced of the entire series. The only one that comes close is Smash 4 and, as good of a job as it does balancing a roster of nearly 60 characters, 64 has a slight advantage over it. No character is worthless in this game and they are all capable of placing well even at the highest levels of play. You'll see a surprising amount of low tiers like Samus and Ness placing well at majors, despite this game being over 18 years old. Yeah, Pikachu is a little too good and deserves to be toned down a little, but he's nowhere near as bad as Brawl Meta Knight or Melee Fox/Falco. However, Smash 64 still has more than solid balance all around.
Wow, this really hit all of the most important factors. Great history lesson. I did not know about the unauthorized prototype, but it definitely felt like an underground game uncharacteristic of Nintendo. I also underestimated how important exposure for Samus was and I did not know that Luigi's personality mostly came from this game.
aniki91344 I _might_ be impressed if they reveal that Rock Band 4 is coming to Wii U, and you'll be able to use the instruments to control the squids. But really, no, HYPED FOR SPLATOON!
I really appreciate the attention to detail that you give your reviews, and that you try out the games before you review them. Smash Brothers is one of my favorite game series precisely because it is such a massive crossover. That's actually what drew me to it in the first place. Thank you for all your hard work. I really enjoy watching your videos.
4:25, I think the point is that this is a kid playing with action figures, for the intent of the game yes that's mario, but for the backstory, it's technically a toy, I've always interpreted this as kids making action figures fight imaginary battles like kids dream up
I'm glad you mentioned the items and how fun they are. While I agree that it makes sense to turn them off at competitive play, I feel like nowadays too many people just scoff at the idea of using items at all, even when you're not playing competitively. I remember having a lot of fun with my friends playing both this game and Melee. (Also Super Smash Flash at some point). It was great. And it was fun to see all the different combinations of options on the menus, seeing all the items that existed and their effects and playing around with that. Especially the Pokeballs, it was a really nice thing.
I always thought part of Luigi's cowardous personality derived from early comics and TV shows (most blatantly, "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show"). While "Smash Bros." certainly helped to build his character, I wouldn't say they were the first to take a crack at it.
Great video! But, tbh, Smash 64 gets played in my apartment more than Melee or Brawl, so I beg to differ with your final analysis. S64 is just so charmingly simple, it remains my favorite of the franchise.
***** Smash 64 is my second to most favorite game in the franchise. My first is Melee simply because it's a lot more challenging in my opinion. I've actually participated in local Melee tournaments before. :P Don't get me wrong though, Smash 64 is great but it just can't compare to Melee when it comes to challenging duels and sick control schemes. Anyhow, ciao! P.S. - We have the same first name.
10:10 I see what you have done there, and it intrigues me. I can't know for sure why you put it in there, but I can suppose that it was intentional. Lol, love your videos, and it's amazing to see that, even going back 3 years, your videos are still great quality.
Since I knew 'fighting games" during a time before Smash Bros, I clearly remember how disappointed I felt during my first few minutes of Smash Bros. It wasn't like Street Fighter or MK, I thought... But as I learned that it was different and played it with ITS rules, it became so much fun.
Nickname Exactly! It's such a challenge to get any sort of content to actually be seen on TH-cam. Contrary to DeMaggioGamer up there, I can't make anyone subscribe against their will. The day the contest ended, I lost about 150 subs. But that's fine! If you're not interested, then why would you want my videos taking up space in your feed? The hope, though, is that some proportion of people who come for the contest check out the content and stick around. I might feel bad about it if, say, I was doing a contest for a game I had no interest in and would never talk about. But when I did the contest, I already knew that a Smash Bros. series was up next for the channel, and if you wanted a demo code, chances are you might like these videos, too.
Never played "Smash 64", but I do have fond memories of "Melee". It's probably the only game I've ever loved that I never actually owned myself. Usually, when I went round my best friend's house when I was younger and played his GameCube, I'd either be shit at the game and give up, or I'd just let my friend pick the game and watch him do it. (I had a PS2, so I only ever played GC games at his house). But with "Melee", even though I was still shit at it, I had a blast playing it, to the point that when my friend asked me what game to play, I'd pick "Melee" 8 times out of 10. Once or twice, I'd actually BEAT him. DK was usually my main guy. :)
i kinda find the polygonal sytle of smash 64 to be charming to this day ...can really be said about the n64 as a whole. super mario 64, the mario party trilogy, mario kart 64, banjo kazooie, smash 64, zelda ocarina of time and majoras mask they ALL look outdated as hell today. but damn it in spite of their looks, they are still charming. yes, even dumpy dk in smash 64.
Never seen any of your stuff before, but I enjoyed this quite a bit! Didn't really learn anything new, but I really enjoyed your ability to patch everything about the games development along with character info while still managing to separate opinions/theories was great! You have a new subscriber, I can see this video and it's sequel covering Melee bringing you in lots of views and subs. In other words... DON'T SCREW THIS UP, TGC!
Romeo MacTavish Yeah... just like Smash Bros. appeals to a wide spectrum of people, it looks like videos ABOUT Smash Bros. tend to have the same effect! Glad you enjoyed my work!
This game (and Kart 64) is still the go-to for multiplayer in my house. Almost all age groups can participate and they’re simple enough to play when drunk. Dreamcast, Wii, Cube, PS4, all collect dust or are sold off, but the N64 soldiers on
ItsNyteShadows Yeah, it's funny to think that 10 years ago, I was making people feel old by going, "Super Mario Bros. is older than I am!" And now I'm on the opposite side of that. "What do you MEAN, your first console was the PS2? How is that even possible!? That thing came out, like, yesterday!"
I don't know why, but when I first heard of Smash as a kid and not seeing the game yet, I pictured them duking out in the fashion of one of those old school wrestling games.
"No fighting game is as fun to play in single-player as it is in multiplayer" Subspace Emissary. Then again I'm hardly a standard perspective, I'm definitely a story-first gamer and normally not a fighting game player.
"Super Smash Brothers was a very good game, but it wasn't quite a great game" Can't agree with you there. It most definitely was a great game. It wasn't perfect, but it was definitely great. Great video nonetheless.
Thank you! "Great" is quite a compliment, coming from you, haha. I guess I am kind of comparing it to its sequels, even then. Like... my Gamecube was hooked up for YEARS until Brawl came out, just as a Melee machine. My Wii stuck around even when I got a Wii U, just so we could keep playing Brawl with GCN controllers. Admittedly it's a bit hard to say since the gap from 64 to Melee was so short, but I don't think Smash 64 would've had the same staying power. We never got burnt out on Melee and Brawl, but we'd get burnt out on Smash 64. That said, I suppose the gap from "very good" to "great" is slim, and you can still make an argument that it's the best multiplayer game on the N64, which would DEFINITELY make it great.
I remember playing 64 so much. I rarely put it down, the classic mode never got repitive to me because that was usually a way you learned how to use the other characters. If I ever get the chance I'd love to play what started it all again.
Wow! Such a different experience to my own before the original came out! I remember reading about Smash Bros before it was released and my younger brother and I were chomping at the bit to play it! I remember the day it came out we went to Blockbuster in the morning and rented it immediately. Played the HECK out of it. Unlocked the SMB NES stage and a couple of the secret characters. Just had a BLAST. To this day Smash (in one form or another) is our go to party game. We have legendary battles between Marth (myself) and Roy (my brother) or Ike. We haven't yet played Smash Wii U together so I can't wait to do another classic Marth/Roy matchup with that, but he lives far away now. But all of those good times started with that first renting of the original Super Smash Bros for N64. Loved it back then and it just got better. My brother ultimately prefers Melee because he spent so much more time on it, but I myself have gotten used to Brawl. I've only recently acquired Smash Wii U so I'm still getting to know it. Really hoping for a Smash for switch at some point.
My favorite memory of this game was when me and 3 of my friends had been playing this for hours until we stopped to go get dinner. While we were out we set the game to 100 stock lives and 300% damage and setup 4 lol 9 CPU's to fight eachother. It was Mario, Link, Donkey Kong and Pikachu duking it out to see which Character reigned Supreme! When we got back from dinner we were able to sit back and watch the last of the match.
With all the Yellow rotorscoping effects I always thought Super Smash Bros (N64) reminded me of Dragon Ball Z. Flying martial arts, You had Fox UpB makes him look like he's powering up to become a supersayan and lets not forget Samus Kahameiameia Wave (or hameamea depending on what translation). But yeah the zero health bar was the big draw for me. focusing on finishers and map control over combos and memory.
Great video. I love Smash 64, it was actually the first fighter I ever played. I have fond memories of going over to my cousin's house to play it. Can't wait for the Melee retrospective.
The Geek Critique I didn't play any of the Mortal Kombat games until recently when I found the original for the Genesis up in the attic and MK9 when a friend brought it over to play. Even though they're tough to get used to, I still had fun playing them.
6:50 well the Mario bros show was already a thing and other Mario media so I’m pretty sure Luigi didn’t really get his personality just from smash lol But all other points are golden 👌 great video as always
The funny thing about this is that Super Smash bros For the N64, was the very first game I ever played at age 3. And this game was released the year I was born, so you can tell how old it was easily. P.S. Now I can't say I remember too much about my time as a 3 year old, This is game being my first, is one that really stood out to me.
slightlytwistedagain o_o I somehow never really considered that someone who'd never played Smash Bros. would check out this video, but I'm glad it was through enough for you to enjoy!
As a kid one of my friends had melee. I wanted to play starfox not knowing it was nintendo exclusive and i had ps2. So that accidently got me into ratchet and clank one of playstations best exclusives.
The reason characters are portrayed as toys is so that they can be scaled to similar sizes and you have a plausible story of how they're all in the world and fighting.
Smash Bros. 64 is a good game, but Mariokart 64 is my favourite Mariokart game, while Smash Bros. Melee is the best Smash Bros. One thing I don't understand though is why the Saffron City stage has never re-appeared. Can't wait for the next part!
TheS2Guy Best I can figure is that with all those long falls, it wasn't exactly a well-designed stage? But I mean, there are some of those in every newer Smash, too, so I have no idea.
Super impressed with this video and super duper looking forward to your melee one dude i checked out some of your other stuff and man i love it you have like a really nice voice and the way you put shit together is pretty sick keep on doin what ya do super looking forward to your melee video i hope you talk about the competitive community a bit thad be TIGHTTT
When I heard "kingmaker", I originally thought you were referring to how good people can get at the game, and thus become the "king" of smash. But maybe that's just because I recently watched the smash documentary
I really enjoy the 'broken' down look at this game. That's what I really love about your videos, use make me appreciate the games more! I also want your next part to come out because Melee is most probably my favourite game out there!
PokeSoxx Hey, I enjoy them for the same reason! I'd never really thought about Smash 64 to this degree before, and I was surprised when I ended up with so much to say about it!
Like this Im subbing also did you really hide fox only really... it reminded me on facebook when the smash bros page referenced that, they had character bios and with foxes like the caption or whatever you call it said "Final Destination better be ready".
I don't know if you read any comments on old videos or anything but here goes. First, let me say I really enjoy your videos. Very informative and cool, I dig it. BUT! I don't think what you're saying in this video is accurate when it comes to saying "Fighting games lost their luster in the late 90s.". That simply isn't true. What had happened, was a shift in popularity to 3D fighters instead of the 2D ones you refer to a lot in this video. In 1999 when Super Smash Bros released, Tekken Tag Tournament (Tekken was hugely popular at this point), Dead or Alive 2 (Which was a system seller for Dreamcast and a darling from a graphical tech standpoint), Soul Calibur (A huge hit in Arcades and yet another system seller) and Power Stone. But even then, the scene for 2D games was still strong and some of the most popular and revered releases also came out that year. such as; Street Fighter Alpha 3, Garou Mark of the Wolves, Marvel vs Capcom, and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. I'll admit that sales for Garou and 3rd Strike were probably not great but they are very highly regarded games none the less, and this doesn't take away from the success that Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Probably the most popular Street Fighter game at that point in time) or what was the official beginning of the Marvel vs Capcom games. If you do read this, thanks.
Third Strike not a great game?? It has some of the greatest sprite work and animation in gaming history. And I would argue that power stone was more of a syetem seller when it comes to fighting games, but to be honest, almost every game was great on the system 😊 Just sharing my two cents on it Cheers mate
"[Fighting games] were known for their realism and-" WAIT HOLD ON STOP How in GOD'S name have fighting games EVER been known for "realism"? If they were, they'd be a lot slower and combos would barely even exist. Like for real, how can such a claim even be made?
I think I meant something about how they were known for being on the "mature" side of the ESRB scale. An E-rated cartoony mascot fighter was a weird concept alongside Mortal Kombat, for example.
When I first seen Smash I had a huge fangasm, "Holy crap, all my favourite Nintendo characters in the same game? And they're beating the hell out of each other? Count me in!" So I've played Smash 64 and completed it, it was a lot of fun, then I played and completed Melee, and it was also a lot of fun, and then I got Brawl, finished Subspace Emissary, and then I got sick of it... And I didn't get sick of it because Brawl was slower and less hardcore than Melee, I got sick of it because I had got desensitised to the 'fangasm', and the core gameplay that's below that, while deep enough for those who could find that depth, just wasn't my style... At the end of the day, traditional fighting games are more my thing, I'm nowhere near good enough to play it against the hardcores, but I still have a lot of fun playing them... Sure beating up Pokemon and throwing people off the stage is fun, but I think that doing complicated combos, pulling off special moves and depleting the opponent's lifebar was just a lot more satisfying...
As a fan of both, if you haven't given competitive melee a real try, you might want to lol, the combo potential in that game is... Well liberating and spontaneous, which is what I like as opposed to the preset nature of traditional fighters. Don't get me wrong, I love the other as well, nothing more satisfying then pulling off a good combo in battle that you worked your but off for, but give "fancy" melee a decent, you might find that it's not too different after all when it comes to "that" intensity lol
I normally played this game all alone. I had a lot of fun with the targets thing. Multyplayer was loud as hell everytime it happened so yea I had fun, but not the most fun. But that's me.
Yes, Ness and the Mother series would have been popular without SSB. It was the fact that Earthbound aged exceptionally well and, you know, the internet being a thing, that ensured its popularity later on. It's not like Pit (Kid Icarus) and Fire Emblem. Mother was popular in Japan and would have gotten a BGA release regardless of SSB, if it had come out in NA you might have had a better argument.
Great video mate. But really, who didn’t know about Earthbound/Ness until after this game came out? If you were born in the 80/early 90’s, you for sure knew what earthbound and who ness was. It’s ok to admit it was a little before your time people !
Been working on Melee all weekend, actually! I'd REALLY hoped to have it done by now, but PLEASE UNDERSTAND. Also, this video is still showing up for me on the main page, though I can't seem to access any of my favorites right now. Maybe TH-cam is just being screwy?
teddyisawesome Ooh, you might have me on this. It's one of those things I read about years ago, assumed was common knowledge, and haven't thought about critically in a long time. None of the big wikis seems to mention it, though they do focus on tournament rules quite a lot. I'll try to find a source.
The Geek Critique I remember when we would make up all kinds of stuff about this game, like if you get a mew pokemon just right he gives everyone gets 999% damage haha. Cool i'm interested to see what you find
I've done episodes on every other Smash Bros. game, too! If you'd like to check them out: th-cam.com/play/PLYoabN6QznuI295JnYS7UezUwTFMcqthB.html
The Geek Critique keep up the good work, love your videos

I don't know why, but when I first heard of Smash as a kid and not seeing the game yet, I pictured them duking out in the fashion of one of those old school wrestling games.
Dat freeze frame at 9:52.
Oh yes! That'll be one of the biggest aspects of the next video: the competitive scene.
Fox only?! That's sweet!
I died when I first saw that XD
Fox only, no items, final destination.
Perfection.
"No fighting game is as fun to play in single-player as it is in multiplayer"
Subspace Emissary.
Then again I'm hardly a standard perspective, I'm definitely a story-first gamer and normally not a fighting game player.
Why there's no F-Zero and Earthbound theme stages?
"Super Smash Brothers was a very good game, but it wasn't quite a great game"
Can't agree with you there.
Really hoping for a Smash for switch at some point.
look at that guy's left hand at 1:38
You got me
I dont get it
Oh, you gotta be kidding me.
Love the video, So far it seems even better than the mario kart videos, a bit more info is given. Great stuff! keep up the good work.
TheSupercrazyman11 Yeah, I agree. I watch my N64 retrospective and the Kart series now, and there's a lot I'd do differently! Ah, gaining experience.
This series is fantastic. I would have expected the channel to be more popular, too. Damn.
Is that a Fighting is Magic reference?? I’m impressed you even know what that is!
Bonus points for the NIИ shirt on the Guitar Hero guy.
Smash was a great game and still is. The most technical fighter of its time at a high level and endless fun at a casual level.
Your Ness point goes double for Europe, where this was the first we saw anything relating to the Mother franchise.
i love how you changed for glory to fox only for one frame
Great video. I love Smash 64, it was actually the first fighter I ever played. I have fond memories of going over to my cousin's house to play it. Can't wait for the Melee retrospective.
***** HAH. The first fighter I ever played was also an N64 game, but it was Mortal Kombat Trilogy.
The Geek Critique I didn't play any of the Mortal Kombat games until recently when I found the original for the Genesis up in the attic and MK9 when a friend brought it over to play. Even though they're tough to get used to, I still had fun playing them.
6:50 well the Mario bros show was already a thing and other Mario media so I’m pretty sure Luigi didn’t really get his personality just from smash lol
But all other points are golden 👌 great video as always
The funny thing about this is that Super Smash bros For the N64, was the very first game I ever played at age 3. And this game was released the year I was born, so you can tell how old it was easily.
P.S. Now I can't say I remember too much about my time as a 3 year old, This is game being my first, is one that really stood out to me.
As someone who has never played the Smash series, this was a great insight into it. Thanks.
slightlytwistedagain o_o I somehow never really considered that someone who'd never played Smash Bros. would check out this video, but I'm glad it was through enough for you to enjoy!
Great video! One of the best I've seen, out of 25,000, or so.
Dude Your really nice and awesome at this. I know how much effort this takes and to see you have little subs compared to other people surprises me.
As a kid one of my friends had melee. I wanted to play starfox not knowing it was nintendo exclusive and i had ps2. So that accidently got me into ratchet and clank one of playstations best exclusives.
0:53 The reason why I suscribed this channel. Awesome vids!
The reason characters are portrayed as toys is so that they can be scaled to similar sizes and you have a plausible story of how they're all in the world and fighting.
Chris Seltzer Oh, I know why it happened, I just didn't think it was as fun to think about that way.
The Geek Critique Yeah, it's anyone guess really. Eagleland Fourside is the exact same stage though in Melee, I just liked the Pokemon theme-ing.
Super impressed with this video and super duper looking forward to your melee one dude i checked out some of your other stuff and man i love it you have like a really nice voice and the way you put shit together is pretty sick keep on doin what ya do super looking forward to your melee video i hope you talk about the competitive community a bit thad be TIGHTTT
been binge watching your vids. All awesome bro
You have the production quality of a much larger channel, keep it up
When you speak words with the “sh” or “ch” in it. It Sounds your spiting 🤔
Good video. Very good insight. Came from your late night stream of Project M: 3.5
Oh yeah! A fellow Sonic fan. xD I've actually completed a series on all the Classic Sonic games, so check those out if you'd like.
Hey that's my post on Sega-16 at the end of video! Glad you noticed! Great episode once again - keep'em coming!
db-elec Yeah, man, it made my day when I found that! Thanks again!
The Geek Critique you made MY day when I saw my "db" logo!
When I heard "kingmaker", I originally thought you were referring to how good people can get at the game, and thus become the "king" of smash. But maybe that's just because I recently watched the smash documentary
marth1717 Ah, that's on my watch list. Though I'm tempted to wait until I get done with this series, so I don't risk ripping off their points.
Loved the video! Can't wait for the next one!
Great insights, and excellent video. This makes me want to play Smash Melee again lol
Like this Im subbing also did you really hide fox only really... it reminded me on facebook when the smash bros page referenced that, they had character bios and with foxes like the caption or whatever you call it said "Final Destination better be ready".
Ah, such an amazing game series! :D
super smash bros for the n64 is part of my childhood dude
^_^
Its crazy to think im only 2 years older than this game.
So pumped for the Melee video. Best fighter ever.
CorvidDude No, man, I already talked about Sonic the Fighters. xD
Top-tier post right here folks.
And I would argue that power stone was more of a syetem seller when it comes to fighting games, but to be honest, almost every game was great on the system 😊
Just sharing my two cents on it
Cheers mate
It looks like Melee used the same toy-becoming-real gimmick.
That Nintendo FPS sounds hilariously awesome
Great video! Liked the fact how Donkey Kong can totally beat Link haha
These are amazing! Keep it up, your time is coming!
10:06
Yes, that is how you hold an N64 controller!
"[Fighting games] were known for their realism and-"
WAIT HOLD ON STOP
How in GOD'S name have fighting games EVER been known for "realism"? If they were, they'd be a lot slower and combos would barely even exist. Like for real, how can such a claim even be made?
I think I meant something about how they were known for being on the "mature" side of the ESRB scale. An E-rated cartoony mascot fighter was a weird concept alongside Mortal Kombat, for example.
Good video, but I think you should lower the music volume a bit, it can get overbearing at times
But that's me.
that chiptune song at 5:15
how do i find it ?
The only thing this game needed was a Gamecube controller :P
Uh. I was born in 1988. I knew _of_ Earthbound because I remembered those horrible-smelling advertisements for it, but I had no idea who Ness was.
6:02
nice futureproofing, aha
10:12
Were you playing Fighting is magic?
Lol got a Castlevania ad before the vid. Cool
I see the meme you put in at 9:52
Why is this video no longer listed on your page? And are you going to do the Melee video sometime soon?
Been working on Melee all weekend, actually! I'd REALLY hoped to have it done by now, but PLEASE UNDERSTAND. Also, this video is still showing up for me on the main page, though I can't seem to access any of my favorites right now. Maybe TH-cam is just being screwy?
Nice video dude.
10:12 Wait a minute.
'Sonic Rainboom'?
So... a cartoon pony... stole a cool idea... from a last century fighting game?
I agree with everything you said. I never knew who C.Falcon was or Ness.
I like Smash 64 better than Melee. Am I the only one?
Can you list your music please?
I seen you on Dreamcast Now! Welcome to online DC. Can you make a video about it?
I'm actually writing it right now! :D
Ha Ha! Great channel, ive just subscribed. I think you will be very popular soon. Professional videos
items appear closer to players who are doing better? Source?
teddyisawesome Ooh, you might have me on this. It's one of those things I read about years ago, assumed was common knowledge, and haven't thought about critically in a long time. None of the big wikis seems to mention it, though they do focus on tournament rules quite a lot. I'll try to find a source.
The Geek Critique
I remember when we would make up all kinds of stuff about this game, like if you get a mew pokemon just right he gives everyone gets 999% damage haha. Cool i'm interested to see what you find
smash got me into fighting games.
great video!
