Not sure if the people who recommended this version mentioned this - but he was sick as a dog with the flu during this performance. Which just puts this on a whole other level of vocal craft

my dad was a great musician, he played accordian, played in bands etc. Even after playing nearly 50 years he made the odd slip, but what made him great was was turning it around in such a way that no one else would notice. I only noticed because I grew up watching him lol
I became a DISTURBED fan at 60.... I seek out reactions to this and other Disturbed's music.... I FEEL their songs lyrically and musically deeply... I am so moved by it

You need to react to one more version of this song...the live version of this Disturbed did with Myles Kennedy in Houston...That is the definitive version in my opinion and its a duet, like the original S&G version.

There's a version of live performance by David and Miles Kennedy harmonizing this song that is amazing!! And they switch who is higher/lower throughout.
I recently saw disturbed perform this live while visiting Melbourne Australia back in March 2024.

Daniel, David was very sick while singing this! This man can SING! By the way...try "The Light" by Disturbed... think you'll love it!
I suspect his vibrato is intentional for this. I'm not 100% sure of that. I'm not a super fan, with some example at hand. I'm not trained vocalist, that can find a clue somewhere else in the song. More, it's the fact the vibrato he uses serves the performance so well, and the performance is so great, it just seems more likely he chose it. Is that fair?
I am familiar with his metal music though, where he does some pretty acrobatic things. And as others have noted, he was pretty sick during this performance and still gave a great performance. You can hear touches of nasality here and there, that don't sound bad necessarily, but also weren't in the original. It makes me wonder if we're hearing the illness there. Yet, to be able to successfully adjust to all of that, live... It makes me think he has full control of his instrument and the vibrato was a choice in the arrangement, not just the only one he had available.

Your explanation to this song is in line with my thoughts. It reminds me so much of A Perfect Circle's "Disillusioned". I normally don't recommend music videos when Maynard is vocalizing but this music video is a perfectly beautiful compliment to the lyrics. Please check it out if you have some time.

This is one of the best covers of a song ever. Could I recommend something rather different but full of just as much emotion and passion. It is Kasey Chambers singing Loose Yourself by Eminem. She is so far from a rapper, yet this song is so powerful and shows the words on a whole different level. I think you would appreciate it. Thanks. Love all these reactions.
