    What I love about Herbert inventing the Spice Melange as the keystone commodity of his fictional world is that at one time in human history it really was spice that linked the east with the west via trade lol. I interpreted the Spice Melange as an allegory for oil & opium/hashish when I read the book many, many years ago.

      It was more that Oil was central to the world economy and travel. Look at the Arab oil embargo in the 70s but imagine that Saudi Arabia was the only country on the planet that had oil.

      When the first movie came out, my father said it was a thinly veiled reference to LSD, but in hindsight "The oil must flow" is our society's mandate and addiction. If the oil stopped flowing, society would collapse as all transport is dependent on it, not a GPS drug.

  • @lordmuaddib
    @lordmuaddib 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

    the way herbert keeps up with the mysticism sorrounding the spice is amazing.
    it's everywhere on arrakis, and yet its true raw form has never been shown. it's almost treated like a philosopher's stone. it takes the shape it needs to be every time it shows up

    • @lordmuaddib
      @lordmuaddib 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Bryson Reins i wasn't talking about its properties or it being a jack of all trades, i was merely speaking of its physical form.
      what you're saying is true tho.
      it certainly enhances whatever capabilities the user has got, as long as they got the right training to unlock em.
      even paul's prescience can be somewhat explained. the spice unlocked his mentat powers to the extreme, and the breeding program made it so he had enough past legacy in his genes to embrace his powers brimming of possible knowledge he could dig into. the night of the first awakening basically shows his mentat predictions goin overdrive to the far reaches of the future.

    • @lordmuaddib
      @lordmuaddib 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Bryson Reins we keep missing each other :) the scene i was talking about was the first night in the deep desert, before paul and jessica meet the fremen. my mistake this time :D.
      this is all my own understanding, since even when leto in the god emperor is working on a way to kill prescience to keep the golden path open he still doesn't explains much of how the prescience works in conjunction to past and future memories.
      paul's visions aren't always perfect. there are somewhat fixed points but the rest is always fluctuating. the fixed points might be a result of an extremely high number of converging possibilities to that direction.
      of course, i'm not saying that mentat+spice=kwisatz haderach, still, it's a way to see the powers in a more grounded side and it's also true that genetic memory is a concept heavily used as well, so that a keen mentat spice user might tap into that. i'd say it's not beyond reason.
      it's clear that in all the duneverse, there are 2 sides of it. the missionaria protectiva was an attempt to instill stories about a superbeing with godly superpowers, but in reality most of the moves done by the bene gesserit and later by jessica were based only on analytical logic, they abused a system put in place. by the end of each arc though, paul and the others "superbeings" are so engolfed in it, that what they do is actually becoming part of the legend itself, so much so that they can't escape from it

    • @lordmuaddib
      @lordmuaddib 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Bryson Reins the missionaria protectiva is a sort of religious mission of the bene gesserit to seed targeted mysticism "about a bene gesserit and her son" and prepare the world to the arrival of a messiah to natives of various planets. all this in order to make them accept the kwisatz haderach they wanted to create and have control of, supposedly.
      it wasn't a prediction, the bene gesserit just knew that someday they would create this being somehow, thru the breeding program. so they wanted to ease its acceptance to the universe, creating legends about it, over millennia.
      the bene gesserit finally lost control over the breeding program due to jessica disrupting their chain. but the legends remained

    • @lordmuaddib
      @lordmuaddib 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Bryson Reins don't, dune books are so complex, each time you read em you find new angles to understand stuff, denying what you previously thought as facts :). most of the juicy concepts aren't even explained to the letter, the reader must get those thru the intricate chain of events :)

    • @lordmuaddib
      @lordmuaddib 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Bryson Reins glad you're enjoying the chitchat. well, on the surface, dune is a straightforward story. what makes it intricate is the whole reasoning and actions each player has put on the table to reach their goals.
      momoa doesn't certainly look a duncan but, surprisingly he seems to pull it off, the kinda feline eyes, the playful side, his stealth-y poses with the dual blades, he seems to have got the espionage side of his role right too.
      i'm waaay more concerned about liet kynes, honestly. while the genderswap is a big issue, i hope that they will not make the char being married to stilgar or something like that as well, it would change the dynamic between paul, chani and stilgar too much.
      i wouldn't base too much on what actors say on the mic, it's marketing. if you hear stuff from rebecca ferguson it's even worse. while it would be nice if everyone was a dune addict to play the role perfectly, i would say it's more important that the director knows what to do with the story and move the actors accordingly.
      lynch's was a mess because he didn't understand the source material and he didn't like it even tho the cast was stellar and some of them were dune fans. villeueve is in his wonderland with a stellar cast, he can do great.
      duncan changes drasticly everytime he shows up later on in the saga. if new movies come up i'm sure the actor at that point will be totally invested in learning each differences

    This masterpiece has three interesting SF settings. 1.Forbidding AI, there are limited techs for human improvement,
    natural selection, selective breeding, and rare drugs. 2. The drugs affect differently to men or women. They improve
    logical thinking of the former (to control outer material environments), recognition of human senses, needs & emotions of
    the latter (to deal with body-internal & social environment). 3. The drugs improve both abilities in the case of the hero.

    Dune is basically the story of an entire civilization hooked on space heroine. It makes for a great story, but realistically, mankind doesn't really seem much better off then they did before.

    • @NATIK001
      @NATIK001 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dune isn't meant to be an optimistic view of the future, it's actually pretty pessimist.
      In Dune humanity has grown stagnant as a whole. There is no development socially, technologically or evolutionary (outside of small very limited programs by the Bene Gesserit, Ix, Bene Tleilax and the Spacing Guild). Dune also zooms out its view on humanity and deals with humans on massive scales where humans stop being human and become instinctively driven mobs or floods. Paul Atreides tries fighting the mob mentality of humanity constantly through his rise to power and his later reign and is eventually consumed by it. Leto II has to basically destroy human society in the hope of forcing its rebirth and giving it new life.
      The factions of Dune are pessimistic portrayals of humanity's problems as well. After discovering Spice and colonizing the known universe the strongest factions of the empire become entirely focused on maintaining the status quo, everything done becomes about ensuring that tomorrow is exactly the same as today and no one tries to fix the issues of society because that might upset the status quo.

    I'm not super well-versed in Dune lore; I've only read Dune twice and the second and third ones once. But I don't seem to recall Herbert ever talking about how the Fremen's lifespan was affected by their massive spice intake, if at all. In fact, I may be wrong, but he doesn't seem to talk about any of the other effects others get from spice ingestion, except the blue eyes.
    So, have the Fremen developed a tolerance or resistance to it over time? Are their lives considerably lengthened, and it's just not mentioned? Or is it covered in other works of his, and/or I'm forgetting something that was addressed?

    • @daniels7907
      @daniels7907 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There are a *lot* of inconsistencies in the novels that Herbert simply never bothered to deal with. You're entirely correct. If the spice extends life then why does it seem like every noble house seems to only have two living generations? In real life, Queen Elizabeth II has *three* generations of direct line heirs at age 95. Herbert is also all over the place when it comes to Other Memory. Based on how it is described to be transmitted, most ancestors' memories should only extend to the moment that they conceived the next ancestor in line, since no further genetic exchange happens after the child is born. But the story routinely behaves as if *all* memories from every ancestors' entire lifetime are preserved.

    • @NATIK001
      @NATIK001 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daniels7907 I definitely agree with all your points.
      I would point out though that we only really see the lineages of three noble houses in Herbert's Dune and those are all central to the Bene Gesserit breeding program at that point. It's very possible that the reason Houses Corrino, Atreides and Harkonnen don't have huge families running around is the Bene Gesserit's tight control of when and whether their females produce any offspring and even what sex the offspring is.
      That said given that Spice is supposed to drastically increase lifespans it is remarkable how few characters are described as being outside normal human lifespan. You would expect a huge proportion of the leadership of the empire to be people well on the other side of 100 years old, but we don't seem to see many or really any described as that old.

    • @daniels7907
      @daniels7907 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NATIK001 - True enough. But the BG's had to manage a delicate balancing act, because at least in theory they were not supposed to have as much influence over the Landsraad as they really did. This is why they publicly assumed a subordinate role, and why they concealed many of their abilities. The Landsraad would turn on them very quickly if the noble houses realized just how much the BG were pulling their strings.
      But how does *anybody* not notice that even the ruling class isn't living as long as they ought to given their access to a *very* powerful anagathic drug? The Fremen I could actually understand, just because they live in an *extremely* harsh environment and have a high mortality rate that is unrelated to old age.

      spice did not mutate humans to replace computers, self aware machines trained humans to be like computers and was helped in the progress of this ability by another drug like substance.
      The mutated evolution of the Atreides lineage caused by life extension manipulation did allow for the genetic passing on of these abilities .
      Also the genetic cloning of Duncan Idaho allowed for the ability to genetically pass on this ability.
      Spice did not, spice opened the genetic abilities of a lot of other stuff though.

    I wonder if the reason the Guild Navigators mutate is because they’re infusing their dna with the dna of the sand worms and are basically turning into a human/sand worm/trout hybrid.

    • @NATIK001
      @NATIK001 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an interesting thought, but I don't think it fits.
      Leto II had to merge with the actual sandtrout to become a worm himself (although a Spice overdose was involved in the process).
      Leto II turned into an actual worm (with a human head) during his process, but the Guild Navigators are described as gaining fins and various other marine or amphibious features.
      My thought it is that like the Spice enables the mind to see into the past lives of some users, the Spice also awakens old genes and DNA sequences. Basically I think the Navigators appearance comes from ancient pre-human DNA rather than that of the worms or the sandtrout
      That said could really be either and your idea is interesting as a possible option.

      No one knows where they came from or how they were introduced to Arrakis. A few people who unlocked their genetic memories have memories of Arrakis being a watery planet long ago before the worms, but no one has memories of the arrival of the worms.
      As for the home planet of the worms. It might not exist anymore or it may no longer have worms on it.
      Lack of knowledge of the planet of origin means there is little anyone can do to search for it, instead the factions of Dune who wants to break Spice monopoly focus on trying to transplant worms off Arrakis and unto other worlds. Though they fail because they don't understand the worm life cycle, they try to transplant the adult worms and they die to water, they should instead be transplanting the sandtrout in large numbers but outside the Fremen basically no one knows this.

    According to Fremen prophecy, the chosen one is supposed to turn Arakkis into a paradise by bringing the water to the surface. By doing this there will be no more spice. The Fremen are addicted to spice. If spice withdraw is deadly, won't this kill all or most of the Fremen? Wouldn't this prophecy be unfavorable to the Fremen? I'm not a Dune lore expert so I might be mistaken with some of the facts.

    • @NATIK001
      @NATIK001 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The terraformation of Dune is slow and take thousands of years.
      If the Fremen lived forever the terraformation and loss of Spice would kill them, but as the planet is terraformed the Spice quantities in the air, soil, water and food lessen so subsequent generations gradually grow less addicted to it. By the time the Spice production (almost) ceases the Spice addiction is basically non-existent.
      The addiction is in a natural balance with the presence of the Spice and as the latter decrease the former does as well.
