Great analysis. Also cant understate the fact that City were not only playing against an extremely well prepared Inter team, who were fantastic in the execution of a near-perfect game plan, but also the magnitude of the occasion and expectation.
Uncharacteristic errors, missed passes and decisions in possession certainly undermined City's tactical advantages and emboldened the Inter press. Cant help thinking that if it was just a 'regular' old Champions League game then the execution and performance from City would have likely been significantly better.
Would that have been enough to win and perform more convincingly? Probably but we'll never know. And I guess they probably don't care.

At the end of the day the conclusion is that Inter played very good, City played bang average (by their standards) but still won within 90 minutes. If that doesnt make City deserved Champions in your eyes than nothing will.
The way i see it: Attacking football won against defensive football, and i think that should be viewed as a big positive for all football fans

A good analysis but Peps tactics didn't work well until they went narrow for a few reasons which are all a mix of
Inter's amazing defense and City's nervous attacking play and poor passing:
    1) Grealish could not get past Dumfries. Dumfries was amazing in defense.
    2) Silva struggled with DiMarco too and usually ended up playing back passes. DiMarco was very good.
    3) Halaand, the biggest and one of the fastest guys on the pitch was bullied by Bastoni and Acerbi and contributed very little. Even his dropping back to get the ball/hold up play was poor. His movement was poor and did not use space on the wings so made ManC wide play ineffective on the left. One of his worst performances in a City shirt.
    4) DeBruyne was carrying an injury that finally took him out of the game. He was sub par before that (because of the injury).
    5) Ake replaced Walker and did a similar or worse job than Walker would have done in the same role. Added little to the attacking threat.
    6) Almost everyone on City was either nervous or tired or intimidated by Inter's physical play or a mix of all 3 and passed badly.
    7) City had to overload the middle and needed luck and an amazing strike to get their goal after very few chances. See points 1)-3).
    8) City needed a Lukaku block and a v poor Lukaku header for Inter not to draw even.
Pep moving things inside was definitely a good move given the lack of progress down the wings.
I hate parking the bus but that was (almost) a masterclass by Inter.
Conclusion: City were lucky (for once) in a CL final.

I'm surprised none of the yt analysts or commentators mention how all that watering on the pitch had a significant impact:
    * Players were constantly slipping over even Martinez vs Ederson, he was skating too far beyond the ball and his chip went right into the goalie as a consequence of lack of traction in his feet. That's one of almost dozen such example or how KDB broke through then slipped over and at some point that slipping caused his hamstring to finally go.
    * Even Foden's shot on goal might have been impacted by the pitch. Others ballooned what are normally easy corners or long-balls from the ground it looked like to me.
My guess, is a normal pitch and possibly not the heat in Instanbul in June, things might have been easier for ManC?
I think your conclusion is right Guardiola's team made their luck tonight:
    1. Tactics helped with the goal as did the over-bearing presence of Haaland dragging the other defenders to an extremely low line for a cross to him while the bounce was pure luck the running positional play of Rodri was not
    2. ManC's stacked defence compared to previous years held on by a knife-edge to deflect Inter's final shots. Foden should have put the game to bed earlier tbh.
The 3 variables I see as curve balls:
    * Hand ball in the penalty box is pure random insanity - I'm sure one Inter player went for a cross at a player to get this?
    * Pitch condition being slippery.
    * Psychology and pressure and nerves breaking discipline eg ManC falling back
So even good tactics need to counter the "unexpected" or "unpredictable".

How can anyone blame Guardiola for the poor performance? If anything, it was his inability to calm down the players who were uber ansious and did not rise to the occasion as they needed. In that regards, Rodri (despite his goal), Haaland, Grealish to name a few did not rise to the occasion. Only Dias, Bernardo, Stones and Ederson had the killer instinct of a Champions. Guardiola's tactics would have work from the start if the players weren't so nervous.

Foden coming in was really a blessing. And if he would've converted the chances he had instead of trying to feed Haaland City would've won this game easily. And before some says Lukaku sold the game ,lol ... He basically was the reason inter were even a threat going forward in that game . Great game all around.

It's wild to me that people are trying to make the case that Inter were the better side here. Inter deserves any and all credit they get for making it difficult for a team that is probably higher-quality than them in almost all aspects. Brentford and United did this to City this season as well, with good results for Brentford but mixed results for United. Inter played like teams that have given City trouble this season and in past seasons, and of course if they were more clinical it could've been a different result.
However, if you're going to make that argument, you need to also recognize that if City had been more clinical it wouldn't have mattered if Inter were able to finish their chances. If each team scored their clear-cut chances, City wins like 4-2. Bernardo just missed his early curling effort, Haaland couldn't quite beat Onana when he was in on goal, Foden had a clear look that he should've put away, and obviously Rodri scored his goal. The headed effort that Inter had off the bar was offside. The one Lukaku accidentally blocked probably was going to be blocked off the line anyway, but let's count it in their chances tally alongside the Lukaku header that Ederson saved.
City had more possession and created higher-quality looks at goal. Was it their best day? No of course not, but a lot of that comes from playing in a big final, and especially when you're up against a quality, well-organized side like Inter. They played against City about as well as you can, with the exception being that they weren't able to put away chances. But even if they had, you could make the same argument that if both teams put away their chances then City would still have won. Of course goals change the complexion of a game, and we'll never really know what could've been, but City were the better side and I don't know how you come away from this game thinking otherwise, even if they weren't at their best.

So which was the genius trick? You mentioned like three or four adjustments starting with moving Stones from right cb to right back and rotating the box midfield to a diamond.
But that quibble aside, this was a very good bit of tactical analysis. My worry as a City fan was how they would pull apart Inter's back 5. Rodri's goal on that pullback was due in significant part to luck but it was the cumulative result of the several tactical adjustments you pointed out that opened all that space he was able to exploit.

I think you didnt give Inter Milan enough credit in your analysis. City had bigger possessions but Inter were more dangerous with ball. The chances created was almost equal especially at half time. The goal was created due to a mistake made by Inter Milan, which was very few in that day. With the quality ManCity had, Inter has effectively limits Haaland, Gundogan, KdB chances with the players they had. Add together the chances Inter had at the end of the game, and the poor crosses theyve made when they had the chances, Mancity was lucky theyve won. They were outsmarted. I think the reason theyve won other than the tactical aspect youve mentioned was the quality of individual players and preseverance. ManCity doesnt miss chances like that.

To me Guardiola was lucky too because Inter were technically sound and had there opportunities too. He was not better than Simone on the night of the final. If those goals missed by Inter entered. We will not be saying Guardiola had a better tactics. People always say he is the best coach ever but i always disagree. If he was that great when he was at Barca he was suppose to win the Champions leagues consecutively with the likes of Messi, Iniesta & Xavi but he never did. But Zidane did that not two times but 3 consecutively times. I agree he is good nut not the greatest.

Zidane did that with a madrid side that has about 9 ucl already (mentality) pep did with a barca side with just 2 ucl lol you see the difference in mentality? Sometimes quality isn’t just enough you need the monstrous mentality and in ucl madrid is the only team that has such crazy mentality and it showed in city final they didn’t have the mentality And besides pep did a sextuple.. only one other coach has done that .. zidane did the 3peat neglecting other competitions!

Mourinho, Arteta & Klopp have named Pep as the greatest tactician to walk the earth..... its not just about what Pep has won its also his influence.... World Football tactics revolves around Pep.. in other words to beat Pep in the Epl for example, a team has to atleast gather a 90+ points end of every season something no manager in the history of the epl had achieved before.. teams have to adapt to Guardiolas tactics not the other way around.... Guardiola is the Messi of all managers !!..
