Football players are among the tippity-top of elite athletes across the world. Players like Ronaldo are at the very top, 1% of that peak. They absolutely SHOULD be given the free reign to thrive. Ancelotti said it best: you don't coach a player like Ronaldo, you leave him to do the thing.
Medias criticizing players for being selfish and asking them to be "team players" is exactly like Leo Beebe asking Ken Miles to slow down to make the Fords cross the finish line together. It's a ploy to make them lose.

    Great video 👏🏼👏🏼
Just one key point that can be added imo. The players are faster and stronger in todays game. More muscle affects the technical ability as well. Physically strong defenders and midfielders are more widespread in modern football
Even Zidane said: "Football today, physically it has changed a lot. For me, on a physical level, it would’ve have played tricks on me"

    • @BartolomeoColleoni94
      @BartolomeoColleoni94 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Speed tests today when running without the ball don't really stack up in confirming just how fast a player is when having control of the ball ( because those speed tests are mainly based upon narrowed drills during practice to run at top flight without the ball and therefore more importantly proves absolutely nothing in how fast a player really is today when moving at top speed and with control over the ball / versus the prior era so / thus there is no true baselline to determine from this as it's not measured with the ball and in the prior era they didnt measure it at all ) . That is measuring top speed with control over the ball. Thus to say a player today is truly faster than one 20 years ago - apart from perhaps sprinting without the ball alone due to being based on drill stats today where as in the prior era where they didn't have such stats - tells us very little than they are fast ( without the ball and worthless because they cant be contrasted by like wise stats as they didnt have them. Therefore the FIFA player analysis type of stats are practically irrelevant when comparing the speed of players today versus the former era - well apart from only telling us how fast they are today ( based on no stats from the prior era ) when moving without the ball at top flight. Great. Proves little really.
Secondly even if players are stronger and have more muscular mass today ( again debatable as players like Christian Vieri and Eric Cantona looked like they could play rugby out there and were class bombers ...ever see Ginola with his shirt off ? ) then what use is additional muscle and strength when you consider all the recent implementation of over officiating rules that serve mitigate the physicality of the game due to player fear of foul ? In summary if you can't freely use your physicality and strength for fear of penalization ( because the goals posts have been widened excuse the pun ) then what good is it? That being said ironically in the former were players on averrage were optically bigger than they are today. And when I say bigger , I dont just mean masss , I also mean taller to the naked eye ( not paying any mind to the lying statistics where all the teams too often give out exaggerations to imprint the false impression their squad is bigger than they actually are.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank was a physical specimen from Chelsea. Luca Toni from Fiorentina and Bayern was a class bomber . I don't buy into the hype that they are bigger , stronger and faster due to FIFA game analytics. The naked eye often says enough alone . I see undersized players billed at exaggerated heights and weights - Because it's shameful how they are not living up to the prior era in the least in those 3 categories. Where in the prior era it was actually a physical game where blood was drawn too often. With players who could actually move at top flight with total control over the ball. I don't really care today that these guys sprint well. Tells me very little as it should tell others.

I laugh every time I see someone say Pep Guardiola prevents players from expressing themselves or showing flair and individuality. Aside from his time at Barcelona where he created a special false 9 role for Messi to unleash his full skillset and put together one of the most entertaining teams in football history, he has had many wingers at Manchester City who are comfortable attacking defenders in 1v1 situations, from Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez to their current wingers of Grealish/Doku/Savio

I think It's an ignorant take
But then again you will have at least 90 pc of football fans for company
That's why they worship stat padders and stat peddlers and ignore the actual best players in terms of talent and performance
Neymar was a great talent and his best was definitely at Camp Nou, where he showcased his peak potential
But the fact is that the Barca team of Luis Enrique was a beast and made him look way better than he was
That's why he couldn't replicate anywhere close to that level at PSG
And You might be right in comparison of Grealish in the city team to Neymar
Neymar is always better than Jack Grealish at city
But Grealish at Aston Villa was a different beast altogether
Not even prime Neymar would be able replicate Grealish's
      performances for Villa
It's just another case of players being underrated and their talent and performances ignored because they play in a much weaker team.
Also ur statement that Pep Guardiola allows creative freedom again proves ur ignorance
Pep famously gave freedom of play only to the few ones he liked like Messi and foden and controlled every other player like a puppet
He also Lambasted and destroyed the careers of every other player he didn't like and esp the ones who didn't approve of being his puppets and ruined their careers!
So the fact is that Pep is actually the biggest influencer in terms of the robotic football of modern age which is entirely stat obsessed and ignorant on talent
If the current trend continues Americans would soon be able to make a big mark on football because football will be entirely athletically inclined and stat-obcessed and completely disregard the technical, attacking, defensive and creative talents in the game
Pep's robotic football and the success of his model is the prime reason everyone is employing a similar robotic version of their favourite tactics
Note: Just cz u don't like it dsnt make it any less true!
So stfu and shove ur insults and abuses and comments up ur 🍑

It used to be the tactic. The tactic was... "well crap, we don't really have a plan to beat this fullback or get around this midfielder so uhh make something up?". The entire job of a winger is "Get around that guy" and either cross, shoot, etc just get him out of the way so the team can have a chance. That can be by clever passing, runs, distracting him for someone else to go, losing him so you are a free pass, beating him with skill, just being good at passing/crossing and never having to beat them... any number of "make a chance oh and by the way this guys gonna try stop you so don't let him"

  • @samymetadjer1442
    @samymetadjer1442 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

Imo, that take on Pep is so off. Pep Guardiola systems always leave a space for creativity. It’s not Pep’s fault if the only way to beat him for most teams is to park the bus. It’s not his fault if everyone want to copy Pep style even if if their teams are not fit to. Pep style comes from Barcelona/Ajax. When you have a look at how players are trained there in the youngest stage, they are not asked to be rigid as you may think.
Just have a look at how Spain plays now with so many players from La Masia.
This rigid approach of football is due to coaches being unable to counter Pep style (but not only him, basically any coach that was able to destroy his opponents with an offensive style, like Klopp or Flick) but also because we always put more and more emphasis on athleticism and we teach less how to master the ball. It was always like that ever since I watch football: athleticism versus skill. Nowadays the first one is favored, that’s all.

I always love to make a comparison between Pep Guardiola and Hollywood's biggest franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)
    - In 2008, they both erupted in the scene, and spent the next 4 years building up something great (Pep's Barcelona and MCU Phase 1), which becomes so successful that it revolutionised said scene (Tiki Taka becomes widespread and Hollywood learns that building a shared cinematic universe is something possible)
    - After 2012, they start building up something great, as they go on to become so successful that they always have banger after banger (Pep's Bayern and early days at City, MCU Phases 2 and 3), so they now seem unstoppable
    - As a result, in the 2020s, many still try to replicate what they did (coaches now seem to be closer to the way Pep plays the game, and Hollywood acts as if you can only do blockbusters "the Marvel style", so action adventure movies that don't take themselves too seriously). In both cases, they are seen as the reason why everything's changed and ruined
This could seem somewhat forced, but I just love how they both started in 2008 and, after over a decade of success, are now the centre of discussions about "things were better before"

thoughts on Ancelotti (generally, with Real Madrid & its many Brazilian players) as Seleçao head coach for the World Cup (if by some act of God Dorival gets the boot)?
apologies if this is an amateur question: I am not so familiar these days with the field of football, as I stopped following for ~8 years as I became homeless and addicted on the streets without a tele - I am in recovery now and began following again, but things are so so different! I am adjusting to it and trying to understand. I had hoped since the last time I had really followed o jogo bonito was the 2014 disaster...I had hoped for better, not just for the Seleçao. Real Madrid gives me hope, but I am learning everything again it feels!

Everything you've said is correct. But the problem is much more the freedom and liberty defensive players have to hold, push, shove, grab attacking players. A While back DeBruyne got body checked and broke a bone on his face and not even an yellow card was shown.
Want to stimulate FLAIR and bring JOGA BONITO back to football, make sure defenders can't be so physical with the attacking player. That and getting rid of 2 players from each side and giving back the space we once had before football players became track and field athletes.
The lack of space works for the ANAL Guardiolian approach we have always seen on FUTSAL in Brazil, but not for flair and imagination. There is simply no space for it anymore. One or two genius maybe but the rest is forced in line by just how overwhelming the lack of space is.

Very amazing video. It is however surprising when mentioning the best flair players of the past era overlooking the greatest and most efficient dribbler of all time in Lionel Messi and perhaps with Hazard the ones with the ability to beat 3-4 players in a single run and carry the ball over a great distance but with Messi able to end the run with either an assist or goal. Neymar and Ronaldinho definetly have more flair in terms of the variety of their flicks and tricks but would mostly focus on beating 1-2 players in a short distance and then release the ball and for zizou it was the magical elegance and playmaking and beating players on one-on -one as he did not have the blistering pace of the others. We have already witnessed the death of the no.10 with perhaps Liverpool Coutinho being the last no 10. of our era. Otherwise great analysis and video.

I got into football in late 2022 around the World Cup and have since then been trying to learn about the game and it’s tactics and all that stuff, this topic of Pep Guardiola bringing this new style of tactics to the game and then everyone copying him and then Pep Guardiola getting flamed for ruining football by changing it really reminds me of how Steph Curry changed the game of basketball simply by the way he PLAYS the game, see in Basketball it used to always be driving to the paint or take a mid-range shot, and only take a 3 pointer if you’re ABSOLUTELY wide open or if you’re on fire, but when Curry entered the Nba he introduced this new style of basketball and then also analytics was discovered which showed that if you shoot a 3 pointer at I believe 33% it is a more EFFECTIVE shot than shooting a mid range shot at like 45 or 50% so now Basketball is system of strictly just layups or dunks and 3 pointers! But many people like they do with Pep Guardiola BLAME Curry for RUINING Basketball when he was just playing HIS way but everyone wanted to copy him because that’s how you beat him, just like Pep Guardiola, all these managers introducing tactical football where it’s strictly possession heavy and low risk is because they think to beat Pep you must play like Pep! I don’t know I just see a lot of similarities in these two topics

The situation right now is there are no talents like Ronaldo, Zedane Neymar you mentioned. Anthony is a great example, he has creativity, but he just can not convert it to real efficiency. There have been players with less skill that didn’t feign injury and were better to watch. The game has changed with tactics becoming more sophisticated but the ideal is to use flair within a tactical system. Even 50 years ago some extremely skilful players were under acknowledged because they didn’t fit into the tactics adopted by a particular manager.

I don’t think Mikel Arteta is as rigid as Pep is when it comes to tactics. That’s why Saka and Odegaard have thrived under his management, because he allows them to roam and express themselves. Arteta prizes versatility. You have to be creative and good on and off the ball to be a versatile player that can be effective no matter where you’re deployed on the field. If Arteta had a chance and the funds to sign a player like Neymar, I think he would do it in a heartbeat. This is a guy who played with Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, and Robin van Persie under Arsene Wenger. “Wengerball” is famously artistic but nevertheless direct in its design and approach, and you can still see elements of that in the way Arsenal play today under Arteta. It’s just that Arteta is trying to bring back that edge and tenacity that made Wenger more successful in the first 10 years of his tenure. And while Arsenal are a team that likes to press high and tend to dominate possession, they’re unlike Man City and Pep coached teams in that when they win possession, they’re trying to press forward and score fast. It’s why he wants players like Calafiori, who is willing to go forward and even drive into midfield to make something happen, and Mikel Merino who is effective in the air and on the ground. He wants his team to be unpredictable and be able to attack in different ways, and that requires players with unique skills and creative ability.

Pep's playstyle was forced by lack of flair, in my opinion. Coaches would obviously choose naturally talented players who can win matches single handedly over players who can't play out of system. He exploited the flair when he was at Barcelona, having naturally talented players such as Messi, Xavi, Busi, Iniesta, Eto etc.
But moving to England, he faced a challenge as players weren’t as technical or gifted as they were in Barca or even some players in Bayern.
I think this is what made him emphasize more on a rigid system. Still, after getting De Bruyne, Bernardo, Foden, Sterling etc, he gave them that freedom to showcase their natural abilities, while still maintaining low risk as most other players in the team aren't as good as the abovementioned players.
    Just an opinion tho.

It has happened in other sports too, particularly basketball - once it became obvious that the most efficient way to win was to lob up endless 3 point shots and get as many free throws as possible the art of dribbling and taking on difficult mid range shots disappeared. Every NBA game looks the same now. Baseball had become reduced to the Three True outcomes, Home Runs. Strikeouts and Walks but they changed the rules to get more stolen bases and balls in play recently.
Football is 'worse' than 30- 40 years ago but ironically it is because footballers are better. There were lots of crap defenders for the more skilful players to make fools of back then, now they are all athletic, fitter and stronger with better positional sense.
