Oyola would be valuable for any company looking to build a real, raw, East Coast street skating team. He knows what it takes. There should be more opportunities in skating for people with his dedication and ethic.
Thanks for exploring some of the emotion these figures, who in many cases are so influential for so many for what actually turns out to be a sadly brief, yet brilliant time. I think the Oyola doc and Elissa's really are valuable regarding this topic, and I'd like to see more. I hate to see amazing epochs end.
In the movie Napolian Dynamite there's this uncle who lives in a van and used to be a football player. A lot of these old skaters remind me of that character.
Vice has been doing Epicly Later'd videos for years. Everyone thinks that Vice is just documentaries about North Korea and warlords but Vice has always done stories about a wide range of random topics, thats what makes Vice special. A lot of you new subscribers don't seem to realize that.
Love the dude, he's one my favorite skaters and seems pretty cool. However, he needs some humility, man.. It's like, skateboarding doesn't owe him anything. We all started because it's fun, and pros it just so happens were/are good enough to use it as a job. what he IS owed by the industry and skate community as a whole is simply some recognition for what he did: made skating everything you find in the streets cool and never lost sight of that despite always being at love, Muni, city hall Cecil b etc, he helped put love park on the map and finally...stuck to his guns
As Phelps said in his episode from the Rambo movie that coincides with Oyola's opening comments... "Just let it goo" Men are gonna die. I appreciate the intellectual cynicism, Ricky. It is genuine which means the more than anything.
I first noticed Ricky in an early 90s z skates video. My friend was on z at time so had z vid. He caught my attention but it wasn't until mid 90s that people realised this guy was a bit special
Stop crying man! Skateboarding owes you NOTHING! It has a shelf life. It doesn't last forever! I always liked Ricky he always killed it. Sucks that hes bummed.
@tm agad you have no idea what you are talking about. Who "deserves" something? Life is about being in the right place at the right time, People from Philly have a habit of the opposite. And yeah, say that in person.
they are referring to the vice that existed only a few months ago that would not have incorporated promotion for companies such as "bangbros" ( that specialise in commercialising the degradation of women ) into one of their segements, as just one example. i'm only watching this because it's epicly later'd.
He found out the hard way that being a dick and throwing out racist comments wasn’t conducive to a long term career. Lesson to all you youngins….. don’t burn your bridges or you’ll end up driving a truck to earn money in your later life. He definitely is uncle Rico….
Skaters should take after the graffiti writers of old and just let their craft do the talking, leaving the personality of the artist a constant mystery and intrigue. Your hero's are kooks, skate legends being the worst.
And I'm glad we do! Dude is super weird and does infinitely questionable stuff, but after watching him, I HAVE to skate. Skating needs more Mr. Miyagis. Not Richie Jacksons though.
@@justinneal1817 Nah. He's just working a stupid angle. There's a difference between being genuinely weird and unique, and forcing every aspect of it, trying too hard.
I reckon VICE should do a separate channel for all the extreme sports like skating, surfing, snowboarding series, etc. It would make more sense to have them in their own channel considering the low views they get on here.
Skateboarding owes you nothing Ricky. Sure you kept it to the streets and quote real, which I respect. But you are not a memorable skater. Cardiel is a memorable skater with more killer tricks in one part than your entire career. Dude was paralyzed and was more positive than you in this series. He found a way to make life work for him after his accident and stay positive. You my friend are a drag and a reason you'll never be as remembered as highly as someone like Cardiel. I watched his episode again after yours and was like so what if dude has to drive a fucking truck to support his family. At least he can walk and skate. Whatever man. All hail Cardiel.
+highonangeldust Oyola is not a memorable skater? You're one clueless dipshit. He's a legend. Finest style, aesthetically clean skating, raw, fast real east coast street skateboarding. There is nothing better than that. I have nothing bad to say about Cardiel, because he is one of my favorites as well, but who the fuck cares about being positive? Why would you have to pretend if skateboarding nowadays is terrible? Oyola is opinionated and honest, he's not gonna kiss someone's ass and act "correct" just to stay neutral and be good guy around. He says these things like they are. Industry is full of ass kissers, where you get excluded if you rub someone the wrong way and skateboarding community loves awful ugly trickstering and lives in skateparks. He has left a huge legacy in the culture and this is how we treat him? Koston doesn't own a board company, rides for fucking Nikes and McDonalds and is milking the shit out of industry. Forget about Koston, just look at all this youtubers "Revive" thing. They haven't done anything for skateboarding neither they are memorable, but they have huge following, kids buy their stuff and can afford to maintain their company. How fucked up is that?
+Painless1992 Like Jake Phelps said " Skating doesn't own anyone shit. It owes you a wheelbite in the rain". Oyola is sick and definitely helped skating evolve, but skating doesn't own him or anyone a thing.
Artificial Dissonance Well I don't agree with that statement. Is that how we should treat our "ancestors" in skateboarding? For what they have done, how they've done it, what influence they have left, for the fact them being the first to do, without copying what's already been there, done before or looking up someone to mimic but their own vision, idea and expression. Skateboarding isn't some jock sport which is about current act of skateboarding, exact moment in skateboarding culture, progression and success of someone's results. Skateboarding is timeless. Legacy lives on. I don't want my favorite pros have to do 2 jobs just to support their families and the end of their career. I want them to have comfortable life after they have given their whole life to skateboarding and are not physically able to perform at their best anymore. After 15+ years I still want to be able to buy a board with my favorite pro's name written on it or a shoe.
+Painless1992 See, that mentality there is jock-ish. Skateboarding is nihilistic by nature. Most pros hate being called an influence because they don't see themselves as important. Skateboarding doesn't owe them anything, Mullen, Reynolds, and so on will agree to that. Anything material they have gathered is only a by product not the main reason why they skate. Skateboarding isn't a sport, it's an art and lifestyle. We join it becuase we love it, not because we want something material out of it. Im not saying their influences should be forgotten, they shouldn't at all. All I am saying is skateboarding owes them or us nothing. It never has and never will. Peace.
Why does the east coast get romanticized for having shitty spots? Lol there’s nothing raw or awesome about shitty skateparks and the worst flat ground you could imagine.

Been on a 24 hour Epicly Later’d binge. Seeing the Jake Phelps one after his death was so heavy
ricky oyola's story is my favourite of all the epicly laterd

Those Eastern Exposure movies were so raw and so dope.
This just proves what all the pros say. That talent isnt everything when it comes to becoming pro
Ricky is a true street skater Legend if u kno Philly you know......
Rickys situation inspired chapelles "when keeping it real, goes wrong!

Of course he got beat up. Cuz if he didn’t, they would still all say he got beat up…. Their coast their way
I watched it through, have no idea why you'd dislike the video... *?*
My big cousin's on vice im proud :)
Ricky always reminds me of a young Robert De Niro, the Taxi Driver era in the 70s. Watch Taxi Driver and you will see what I mean.
You guys need to make an Epicly Later'd on The Gonz!
too raw too real

the sub titles in these are a little questionable. Dont think anyone that skates did them. pretty funny though
