I know a guy who went back to school when he was 47 years old. He's like 56 now and is a teacher. An amazing teacher. It's never too late to change directions and go someplace new.
I love this guys’ skating. I’ve always loved “power skaters” like him, Keith Hufnagel & Dennis Busenetiz. You know pushing real fast through the streets, big ollies over stuff. I know “power skating” sounds cheesy but I don’t know how else to explain it!
Nah you're right that's the way to describe it. I skated alot with ricky in the late 90s early 00s. When you see how he skates in person power is the first word that pops in your head.
My friend was on z skateboards in early 90s in England believe it or not. Ricky caught my attention in z vid in 91. Had to wait another 2-3years before he got attention he deserved. Much underrated and heavily influence for mid 90s skating
I don't think he's a dick, I think he's being open and honest about his opinions. He even admits that though he should let go, he can't. Nobody apart from Ricky can understand the emotions and experiences that he has gone through, and he's entitled to have those opinions. Instead of completely brushing off anything he has to say, or disregarding him as a person because you disagree, try to understand that this guy was unknowingly pioneering skateboarding purely by skateboarding over 25 years ago, only to see it become so commercialised, judged and even regulated to a degree with contracts and obligations. I hope he can continue to love the skateboarding that he appreciates in all the crap that's out there.
not to be nebby. . but are you from Pittsburgh. I grew up right out by the airport. so I was just curious. cause I was always in the city, and moved to Oakland by Pitt around the end of 95
@@forevershampoo lol i can’t believe I said this. Tbh my current day feelings is that he wishes he moved to cali m etc etc. He honestly is technically a legend in the philly scene
@@samuelborchardt-cho7379 f u not everyone can be koston! Rick seems like a cool dude back in the day skaters didn’t get paid shot and probably still don’t unless your top 10 . We all grow up and need to support ourselves that’s just life .
And he's broke n Koston is half owner of the Berrics and a multi millionaire. Hmm, sounds familiar to Josh Kalis story and Stevie haha that's what u get for being a dick ur entire life
8:38 is exactly how I feel. I think it comes from having limited space to skate or something. I just had a garage, small basement and the neighbors 'h' shaped driveway for about 45 minutes after school each day. I love living in suburbia California since it makes the trip to and from places a lot more fun than driving. I like the idea that some kid will see and it'll change their life. As long as you can ollie up a curb you're set...Rest in Peace to all the rippers that are passed on....
Rick gave me a few tips at Love park... he was a cool ass dude, ran into him at a few spots around philly being in the skate scene.. i always stayed out of the way of skaters better than me, I think he noticed that one day at Love and mentioned a movement i was doing wrong to correct. skating Philly in the 90's was a privilege.
@@drinkingpoolwater i thought it was.. the only gatekeeping i saw was more of a battle for time at a given spot against getting chased away by cops, it’s much more skater friendly nowadays so you don’t really have to compete for time on prime locations like it used to be, generally speaking.
people that cling to their glory days make me sad. arrogant people that think they're entitled to judge others because of their achievements during their glory days annoy the fuck out of me.
To every one complaining believe it or not this is actually the old Vice. They've been making skate documentaries for years on their website long before all of the North Korea and warlord third world country stuff.
Met him a few times in Philly. Truly cool guy. Still a lil intimidating. Has a true ethos. Gotta respect that. Edit: By the way, Philly is a fucked up tough town. No shit.
I have to be honest w/ ya .. half the people who bought boards it wasn't about the name on it. If the graphic was shit nobody wanted it. Skaters with shitty graphics I feel like never realized that. At 1:45 is a sexy deck.
Just learn to skate, turning around is what a 9 year old would do. It looks stupid. You look like a dork, same with pushing mongo switch because your not capable of pushing switch, skateboading is all about board control, if you can't even push right then you suck.
Nahh man. No rules in skateboarding, do what you want, be creative and do your thing. If you want to do a trick to fakie then fucking do it. Oyola's wrong on that.
I hate how every video on Vice that isn't about a third world country or north korea or a warlord seems to automatically get at least 50% dislikes. Vice is more than just documentaries about third world countries, Vice has always been about doing different stories that cover a wide range of topics. I don't think a lot of the new subscribers realize that.
Me me me me me me me it’s all out me I did this and everybody owes me; to me that’s how Ricky is I can’t like someone on the board if I don’t respect you off the board. Dudes got a terrible outlook ands it’s no wonder Stevie and kalis are where there at and Ricky probably still crying somewhere in jersey about how people skate the way they do because of him. I respect your impact Rick and recognize you did do something special in something I love so much but I don’t put on blinders just because you did something special at one point
It's how a lot of Philly people are honestly. I live like 40mins south west of Philly, can go there every weekend. It's the whole greater Philly area that is like that, even in my area 40mins away. It's a pride thing I guess. I'll talk about listening to AFI or Poison The Well before anybody else and not think at all how hipster I sound cuz we're honestly not in our minds. It's just a Philly thing, I don't know it's just how a lot of us think lol
Vice was covering skating long before any of that stuff, all these people are ignorant to dislike, literally no point. If I had the option and I maintained vices channel, I'd auto block every ungratefull immature person to do so. Ahaha
What? How so? I was simply agreeing with pozos88, and giving my opinion on the dislikers. If thats being trolled I wasnt effected by it at all. And nah, my tolerance is fine :)
Hes completely right about going to fakie in a line for no reason it looks horrible i never see people push mongo anymore but i see that shit all the time if you want to go to fakie in a line then do a trick to get back to reg if you cant do that then you dont get to go to fakie
yea i feel like the mythology of love park gets a little embellished at times. people talk about it like it was studio 54 or something lol. it was a public park downtown, not mecca.

The only skater I've ever cared about meeting. Real dude. Real East. True East!

haha Ricky Oyola is probably one of the only skaters who would talk shit on Koston on camera.
Jai Bronson he’s just más that he’s a bum doing nothing with his life, while Koston flourished and is still in the industry today.

Ricky is nice but Koston is on another level.
I had that Zoo York board. great board. Oyola straight awesome Sk8er.

Just do a half cab, then everyone’s happy
You sure seem like a happy, successful individual.
6:28 pure madness!!
Does doing a simple switch 180 as a follow-up trick to a trick to fakie count, or does it have to involve some flip or grind?

Who cares what rules some turd made up one time. But, a 180 is a trick.

please do an episode with josh kasper. i know he is out of the scene and stuff but it would be sick if you did

Seeing that Sub Zero deck is weird! It totally looks like what early Zero decks would look like later on.
People who leave random comments to strangers are fucking Hacks too! Oh wait that’s you! Ya Fucking Hack!

I love VICE, would love to work for them, Some Day , i will!, wish me luck guys!
Where do u work rn brother
I wonder how many shoes and decks he wore out ._.

His skating is amazing obviously, but I dont know if I can listen to him pat himself on the back for another 3 episodes...
Rob Schlegel good bye

no shit - that's why they're putting up their old stuff now.
i also didn't like when people did a trick to fakie and than just turned around without doing a trick...
