  • Project War Mantle is in full swing and the TK stormtroopers have more or less taken over for the clone troopers... and that might not be a bad thing. At least not for the Empire.

    Alan makes the big point about the clones here: they really were the perfect soldiers, doubly so after a few years of fighting side by side with the Jedi. They were incredibly effective on the battlefield. But the moment the fighting is over and the helmet get to come off they are also personable and likeable people. They can vanquish whatever foe you point them at quickly and effectively. Order 66 is perhaps the greatest example of this, but afterwards they will also make some friends with the people they just saved. And that right there, that is impossible place a value on.

      Yeah, but he's wrong. You can't make sweeping statements about the clone troopers by looking at fringe cases. Howzer may have been kind to the people of Ryloth and doing a decent job, but we see clearly that the majority of clones decide to stay with the Empire any way.
      The clones, bar some exceptions, were only heroes in the war due to Palpatine. Palpatine made the CIS evil, and thus by defeating the CIS, the clones would always be the lesser evil. This doesn't make public opinion of them good, it just means that people are willing to have them there instead of the battle droids. Heck, on Kashyyyk, it was the clones poor peace keeping that resulted in them attacking the Wookies, not Imperial orders.

    • @GeneralBlackNorway
      @GeneralBlackNorway 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @7 Indeed, one should not expect clones bred and trained for war, essentially 9 year olds in the bodies of 18 year olds, with limited to no life experience besides the little theory (about the galaxy they were to fight in) they were taught in their short lives, before spending the rest speeding between one battlefield after another with little time for respite. How could these clones be good peace keepers or understand the populations they were liberating/occupying? How could they be so restrained as to not go on murderous rampages in response to their brothers dying in attacks by the rebelling population, when all they know is war and violence.
      I'd bet only a few clones, particularly the commanders close to the jedi were able to learn and emulate the jedi ways, while the rest who only saw and communed with their fellow clone brothers would not learn anything other than the few brief interactions they would have with local populations. They would only be used to friendly populations happy to be recently liberated before they head off to another active battlefield. Only after the war would they stick around in one place long enough for resentment to build up enough for confrontations to regularly take place. Thus facing an unfriendly population would be something rather new to them and they'd be unprepared to deal with that. They would simply not be mentally equipped to handle a hostile population.
      Thus it's not all that surprising why the TK troopers would come in to be garrison troops, as they are regular people who would have much more intimate understanding of local populations. Further clones wouldn't make good detectives as they would be too inexperienced with real world life and too naive. So the clones as an occupation force is a recipe for disaster leading to only more and more violence.

      I always think of it like this: Stormtroopers/TK-Troopers/Shore Troopers/etcetera are like the standard Marine Corps Infantry (not Special Operations like Force Recon, Raiders, etc, which i liken more to, say, Death Troopers and/or Purge Troopers) and don't get me wrong, theyre VERY capable infantryman if used correctly and the individuals planning & executing a full-scale, all encompassing (involving all branches basically) campaign/invasion/operation/etcetera, understand their limitations and don't demand more than the average "Grunts" in the infantry are trained & equiped to handle. The reason i state it this way is because I think, in the US, a lot of us have this misnomer that the average Marine Corps units are equivalent/near equivalency to the "Tier 2" Army S.F. "Green Berets," or Army Rangers, Navy SEAL's, or any of the other SOCOM/Special Forces units of the other branches, and while I would definitely say the average Marine is more capable & closer to the "Specialized" units than the average Soldier, Airman, Sailor, etcetera, both individually and collectively, they definitely fall short of those more "elite" troops/units, and they should based on the training level & equipment the average Marine Corpsman has. The reason j say all this, is because I think the "propaganda" point you brought up is pretty close to my head canon as well when in comparison to the real world. Everybody expects the Stormtroopers to perform on the level of what the, for example, Death Troopers of their own era or the experienced, frontline, battle-hardened Clone Troopers of the previous era were/are capable of on average. Whereas, the average Stormtrooper hasn't seen any full fledged combat like the Clones did, nor have they engaged in high-intensity, Special Operation type clandestine/localized missions on a regular basis like the Death Troopers, Purge Troopers, ISB Operator-type Trooper classes/Soldiers, which would give them a totally unique set of skills & experience that training, no matter how long, high quality or extensive, can't fully prepare one for. As many of the small/minute and relatively larger details of skills & tactics (both large and small possibly being life & death) simply can't account for especially in a universe like SW where there's SOOOO many different environments, threatening beings & different weaponry, and their tactical/strategic variations, not to mention morality & ethics. Stormtroopers get a bad rap in my opinion, they would do a LOT better if they USED THE F'ING STOCKS on their E-11's though 😂.
      Edit: Does anyone know if the underfolding stock that the E-11 (and the Clones DC-whatever # of the same type) is actually a functioning stock that can be folded out & extended to provide a 3rd point of contact on the shoulder and a cheek weld? I know the real world British Sterling SMG that the E-11 is based on could be unfolded rather easily.

    The M1 Carbine wasn't just about ergonomics. The 1911 was arguably easier to handle and less obtrusive than it was, but statistically didn't allow rear echelon troops to achieve much in the way of effective fire if they encountered enemy troops. The carbine and the M3 were good options for support troops and other non-infantry specialties due to higher capacity and increased firepower compared to a sidearm they might otherwise be stuck with. This philosophy extended across the lines and persists to this day, which is why Personal Defense Weapons like the P90 and MP7 were originally conceived.

    • @nicorozner7417

      PDWs never really saw much use outside of SF since it was discovered that carbines could do the same job with only marginally more weight and simplified ammo supply chains, but you are right about the original M1 carbine. US military doctrine heavily emphasizes individual firepower, so the carbine fits nicely into the role of rear echelon self-defense weapon.

    Also have to consider that TK troopers are new. It takes training and experience to make an elite soldier. Clones had several years of that, practically from the day they were pulled out of the tank. TK troops have only been around roughly a year at the time of Bad Batch. Clones, particularly the older ones, are battle hardened. TKs are fresh to battle. There is going to be a significant difference in skill levels between them.

Scorch is, obviously, but there seem to be an awful lot of them available for units that hardly ever appeared on-screen during the war. I think most of them are regular CT clones who were evaluated after the war as extremely obedient. They get promoted, issued new equipment and declared part of an elite force while the rest of the GAR get drummed out or reduced to test subjects. This leaves a small, well-equipped core of clone soldiers usable for assignments like Mt. Tantiss where droid-like obedience is required while cutting the overhead of the remaining units.

Yes, I remembered when Palpatine made a proclamation to pass a bill to decommission the clone troopers and replace them with normal humans. But at the moment, we are seeing that the TK Troopers cannot do anything right without the clone troopers preparing everything for them. So when the last of the clone troopers have either died or leaving the Imperial Military's services, that is when and where the TK Troopers' incompetence will be displayed and that most likely will led to the harsher training for the elite troopers that eventually become the Stormtroopers. But the point here is when and where that the TK Troopers displayed such incompetence that it costed the Empire a victory?

    About quantity vs. quality, there was an interesting exchange in the beginning of the original Battlestar Galactica show (paraphrased a little):
    Apollo: "They day they beat us 10 to 1."
    Zac: "10 to 1 is one thing, but check your scanner, 1,000 to 1 is just not fair."
    Palpatine could drown any opponent. Even an entire sector together with their local Imperial Forces would rebel against him, he could drown them in troops. Now if the entire Imperial force of a sector was made out of elite soldiers on every level, they might have a chance to reach him on Coruscant and actually kill him. Their losses would still be horrendous even if they make it, but that's not the point here. It's Palpatine's paranoia at work. So what if the TK troopers were just enough to do the jobs that Palpatine needed them to do? They still did what he expected them to do and a possible, even if just distant possible, source of trouble was eliminated in the planning stages.

    The M1 carbine was originally designed to replace the pistol, which it failed to do as the pistol it was trying to replace was the M1911 ACP. From talking to veterans that were issued the M1 carbine, they had the same issue with it that later soldier had with the M16 taking the place of the M14. A smaller round, even when compared to the .45 caliber 1911 that it was to replace.

      The M1 carbine was just that a carbine. It wasn't trying to replace a pistol.
      If you had to only be armed with one weapon, the M1 carbine is leagues better than a 1911(which is pretty average as pistols go) or any other pistol being a carbine.
      Pistols serve a much different role than carbines do. It's like saying the M4 was supposed to replace the Beretta because it's lighter than an M16a4.

    The other thing to look at is that Palpatine likely didn't WANT elite military units or highly versitile carrier ships.
    One of Palpatine's major tactics was to stab allies in the back as soon as it suited his needs. He generally only did this through other pawns, rarely bringing himself into direct conflict. But that philosophy can be turned against him as his (sigh) first death showed.
    So if the backstabber expects to be backstabbed, what kind of knife does he give his underlings to use? Do you want their ground forces to be elite Jedi killers whose loyalty can be flipped like a light switch? Or do you want them to be poorly trained unless you've properly indoctrinated them? Do you want a carrier ship that can deploy itself in unexpected ways and perhaps infiltrate a planet's defenses? Or do you want set piece battleships that can be easily countered by 2-3 of the same while you safely sit under planetary shields immune from their guns?
    The ISD and stormtroopers still do their jobs, but we don't see them exhibiting the plot armor of Bad Batch or using fighters to infiltrate and behead (literally) the enemy leadership like in RoTS. I'd go as far as to say that he equipped his Royal Guard with melee just so he couldn't be shot in the back while walking to the bathroom at night.
    Palpatine didn't want an Empire that could effectively run without him, he wanted one that he could keep clenched in his fist.

    Clones age twice as fast, you don't even need to keep them for that long before they're no longer a threat physically. The extra 5 years service for them is a full decade, and a decade is two. Just keep them around and retire them, it would be better for morale, it would be better for PR, and they are legitly useful, often time the only solution you have in may threat of the Post-Clone War era.
    You could even pay them pension for their retirement. They only need half of what any Stormtrooper would have demanded, because again, they only live half as long.

    • @tk-6967
      @tk-6967 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @jacobhunt8379 Nope, that is part of it, and that isn't even fully true. Dooku, by this point, Darth Tyrannus, had already formed the Confederacy of Independent Systems. He was speaking to corporate leaders, not Separatist leaders, about them pledging their droid armies together. The corporates weren't really interested in rebellion against the Republic. They had grievances, sure, but the Republic allowed them to do largely whatever the hell they wanted, just like in Episode 1. They had a similar goal to Sith; to prevent genuine dislike and grievances of the Republic from being widely accepted. The corporates also sought to earn a ton of money in the process.
      The corporate leadership made everything for both sides but also helped the Sith weaken their own droid forces under the CIS. The corporations and Sith also made the CIS look incredibly bad morally and made sure they had bad strategies in place. This is why a lot of important CIS military leadership gets taken out at the start of the war. While the CIS needed to be dangerous, they didn't want it to be a competent threat.
      The Separatist parliament and most genuine Separatist movements had little to no actual say in how the CIS was run. This led to Onderon, one of the founding CIS planets, becoming disgruntled under CIS rule, and Dooku made sure to respond with military force and depose and detain the king, purposefully stoking a pro-Republic rebellion amongst the population.
      Ryloth and Kashyyyk were both 2 prime candidates to join the CIS and had every reason to leave, with Kashyyyk only really being split due to their good relationship with the Jedi Order and the loyalty of the Royal Family to the Republic and Ryloth being split due to Senator Orn Free Taa and the other Rylothian elite's loyalty to the Republic. However, the Sith and corporates pushed them away from secession with pro-slavery policies, and on Kashyyyk, they murdered the Crown Prince. These events led to Ryloth and Kashyyyk becoming staunchly anti Separatist, and the Wookie warriors and Cham Syndulla's resistance fighters becoming allies of the Republic despite neither being natural allies, particularly Cham, who was not pro-Republic.
