  • Layout design can be tricky to many designers, but today I will be showing you a step-by-step process for creating the perfect layout on your designs, each and every time. Also we will make great use of the Visual Attention Software (VAS) by 3M, as a means to make sure we are grabbing the attention of the viewer, and directing their gaze around our design efficiently.
    You can learn more about VAS by visiting vas.3m.com and sign up for a free trial. You can also use promo code “Thomas” for five extra free trial credits when you sign up.
    When embarking on a new design project, you will want to consider the layout as one of the most important aspects of the entire process, from start to finish. In the video we walk through that process starting with grids, and then heading onto aspects such as hierarchy, alignment, negative space and so on. The grid is one of the most helpful methods of getting all of this correct, and it can be considered much like the backbone of your layout, or the foundation of a successful graphic design. Layout design cannot and should not be ignored or underestimated.
    If you found today’s video on layout design enjoyable or useful, let me know in the comments section and drop a like on your way out. Subscribe to stay updated to all of my uploads and until next time, design your future today, peace.

    Here's an ULTIMATE guide to layout design: th-cam.com/video/yUvGHNzqG7M/w-d-xo.html
    I wanted to add a section about alignment, yet it was cut out from the edit. If you use grids properly however, your alignment will come naturally almost without thinking.
    Have a great day

    I’ve been at it close to 20 years now, and I find your videos very useful, most of what I do is automatically and while I do incorporate a lot of principles, tricks etc., its key to remind yourself the theory and philosophy behind it. And I still learn some things here and there too of course :), thanks for these videos!

    I'm almost finished with my graphic memoir of how I used my health and fitness knowledge to stop my mother with mild dementia from forgetting me, and it worked. I tricked her off caffeine, then no prescription meds, forced her/tricked her/incentivized her to drink water, kept her away from high fructose corn syrup and other poison, because they made her mean and delusional, and kept her away from gluten. I labeled layers by text vs. images, and then by page number, and all of that is linked through word. When I add in pages, it becomes all scrambled. I thought writing this memoir digitally would be faster, but I don’t think so anymore. I did spend time going through all of my layers in every document in my 250-page book, renumbering the layers according to the new page number, but now reviewing all of my journals, I need to add in more. Do you have any suggestions for organizing?

    • @SatoriGraphics
      @SatoriGraphics  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's such a moving and selfless adaption of design skills. You've done a truly great thing for your mum:)
      They do say that dementia is type 3 diabetes, so the corner syrup and fructose idea was good.
      As for the design side of things, I would use 1 document per day of week, and then save them into folders. So have 2022, then inside that folder have the months, and in each month folder, have the days or weeks, and save each diary entry accordingly

    Awesome video (as always).
    I feel your teaching methods have evolved considerably and I truly feel you should be teaching, as in developing a design course.
    Side note: I believe this is the second time I have heard you mention that you are not a fan of the golden ratio. Myself, I believe it has been overdone and I would akin the golden ratio more for art than design. When designers try to come up with a project following the golden ratio, they seem to fall flat. The fundamentals work and they work for a reason imho, which is why I am such a big believer in simplicity and minimalism.
    That said, why are you opposed to the golden ratio?

    In your first grid example layout (two columns at the beginning of video) there is a basic typographical mistake,: gutter is at least five times too wide in relation to copy leading. the principle is: gutter shoul be as close as possible to leading of the body text. It would be extremely difficult to read such text.
