Same here! Though not a designer per se, I use design a lot in my work, so these videos are soooo good. I like your casual style better, though, Will. :P But I say this only because I have nothing else to complain and moan about! :)))
@@electricimpulsetoprogramming I'm self-employed, mainly translation and copywriting. But all these come in handy, I design restaurant menus not graphic-wise, but sales-wise :) Basically I think of how to put things in a menu so that the sales go up. :)
I started my graphic design job in 1972. There were no computers, no Adobe, everything created by hand using felt markers, airbrushes and gouache for visuals, Letraset or Mecanorma, Rotring pens, French curves, Pantone colour sheets and sometimes we were working with 4pt white type on sheets of Pantone film to create a mockup to be photographed. Artwork drawn on sheets of CS2 or CS10 board, lots of scalpel blades and opaque white. Today is SOO much easier, faster and flexible. I would not go back for anything and I'm still working. Yeah baby!

Another great video, Will. Thought you were a brand logo designer (as the videos I've seen of yours focus on this) but either way your tips were spot on!
I know this might seem obvious but when I was first starting out it would have confused me a little. When he says white space it doesn’t literally mean white space. If the background of the poster you are designing is black for example it’s still called white space. It just means the parts of the design that doesn’t have any text or pictures or anything on it.
Hey Will. Quick question. What do you do when people in advertising tells you "that looks empty we have to fill it more" and you tell them is not needed or something similar to that ? As a professional what do you say in this circumstances?
@@aaroncphelps you can do that if you to be fired out of your work. After all, it is the client who is going to suffer the loss, if they don't get enough hits from the advertisement you made. So you will have to come up with a reason of why you choose to put a white space onto the design you've made. You should know that if you're a designer...
Really helpful video, One question, why instead of making grids manually, just use from View-Grids-Show grids? please provide us with more of these videos really helpful. Thank you Mr.Will
Super helpful that you give the distinction between the use of Grids vs the Rule of Thirds. I wish I had just stuck to this general guideline before I went all buck wild with trying to figure out the Golden Spiral / trying to calculate phi grids for all these different dimensions I'm reproducing the same design for 🙄lol. What a rabbit hole...😅 I took it way too far when I should've just gotten back to the basics! So would it be fair to say, when first approaching a landscape design to use the rule of thirds as a good starting point vs starting out with a basic column or module grid for portrait? Thank you for clarifying!
The rules of first, in my opinion, is more of an overall principle that you should be aware of. I would also have an underlining grid, both horizontally and vertically. Then you can consider if you want to place a text block or an image in accordance to the rule of thirds. Also it helps if you need to reframe some photography or something to know how to deal with rule of thirds within your artwork. Hope that clarified and made some sense.
I enjoyed this video so much. Thank you so much! Do you have any tips for designers who work for a company and have to design for marketing? For Example: My boss said i´m using too much white space and that the clients don´t take the time to look at the stuff. I somehow get the "keep clients attention"-thing but it feels like i have to design differently, this causes that the design looks not as good as it should be, you know. Any Tips? Thanks!
Love your videos its really helping me become the graphic designer I want to be. ATM I’m competing in logo contest but I just can’t seem to get the best design… have you got any tips?
Will, this might not be your area of expertise but I'd love to see videos or resourcing for designing tab sized (17 x 11) interior newspaper pages. (and for bonus difficulty, when the bottom half of that page is ads and all you have to work with is the top half).
Most of the time you won't get chance to think and you will be expected to deliver good layouts at speed of light. So don't just learn to develop good layouts but also learn to develop it at a pace. In other words learn to solve problems at a fast rate. This is a good video, but also watch as many you can and put it to practice and see what you come up with and are you able to think and think fast in resolving design problems.
Not sure if the box method is really life-changing. I still prefer the white space, the balance, repetition, and other principles of design to be the most important.
I really wish clients knew design basics as well even a good brief clients who really don't know say they like can't you make the logo bigger etc 🤦🏽♂️
Hello , sir . I am a student of class 10 and I am 15 years ar old . I want to be a graphic designer as like you . Can you please tell me how can I start 🙂
Dunno how Will would answer, but I'd say start by using the fundamentals, type hierarchy, composition on a page, text vs image, appropriate font usage and grid systems. As mentioned in the video there are plenty of books that can help with these. I would also look at advertising posters that you like/dislike, analyse why you believe they work/don't work.
