  • Following all of the repairs I have recently been doing on our clutch pedal system, I noticed that the fluid in the clutch fluid reservoir was fairly dark and murky. I am pretty sure the fluid has never been swapped out so after some research and reading from the Haynes Repair Manual, I figured it was time to do a flush of the system. In this video my brother in-law Tyler and I show you how to flush your Toyota's clutch system.

Dude, seriously... because of this video right here, I was able to find and bleed the air out of my clutch system on a snowy parking lot yesterday. I drove the truck for a good 100 miles in winter conditions with the clutch pedal needing to be pumped to change gears. Talked with my mechanic what can this be and he said probably needs bleeding the air. I searched on youtube, saw your video and, as always - you provided quality looks and explanations. 5 min of work and the clutch was as new again. Thank you!

Hey glad to hear it! Gotta love being able to do simple road side fixes on these things. Also appreciate the feedback.

I've changed the slave and master 4 times clutch fluid turns black and we can can't get into 1st gear anymore somehow the flu is eating the rubber?

From my limited experience with transmissions on these things, makes me wonder if your clutch bracket is cracked (would also make it hard to go into reverse), how old your transmission oil is, or if your clutch pedal is adjusted properly. All things other than a problem with the gears themselves or the clutch. After flushing the clutch the first time, the fluid has become darker for us as well. We had trouble shifting to first and reverse due to the limited travel on our clutch pedal bracket. I recommend looking at your clutch bracket and swapping out the transmission oil just to see if that fixes it.

Hopefully you are using only conventional Dot 3, and NOT synthetic. These master Cyl require a bench bleed procedure. (a shop helped me) I tried the 2 person way pumping clutch pedal while I was under trying to bleed the slave cyl. It didn't work well.

Nice videos ...in 1994 when I bought my 1990 4Runner coming off a lease in AZ, I went down to the dealer and bought the orange shop manual which is about 3" thick. I used it to fix the sunroof cable. I paid like $110 dlls back then. It is well written and a real necessary book. You can search e***ay for (1990, or 1991, or 1992 or 1993 Toyota 4Runner SHOP MANUAL and you can find them in good condition now for roughly $50 Dlls. I highly recommend them, and any of those years would apply to your rig. Like servicing the TOYODA steering box. I bought a spare salvage one on the other side of town for $45. I used the manual recently, the factory orange shop manual book was correct on how to efficiently remove the CV axle with minimal disassembly using two floor jacks. Honestly I did it wrong but i should have studied that manual better. Just go on e****ay and send a note to the sellers that if they are willing to accept $50 for the factory orange shop manual. I bet some will bite and you can get the very best manual for your rig. I saw that you mentioned you are using haynes. Back then, barely anyone had a desktop computer.

Hey that's awesome and thanks! I managed to get my hands on a pdf of the factory service manual which I use now. It's awesome. Thanks a lot for your support and commenting.

@@roughcutsgarage if you have opportunity to get actual manual (used of any model year close to yours), you might like it better. I also have the PDF but its not as easy to use as the manual. For sure it would be a valuable tool for you, you wouldn't reget having it.. Also I just bought & tried the Phoenix Systems V5 Reverse Brake Bleeder for $53 which allows 1 man brake & clutch bleeding. Its low cost, and seemed to work for me. I discovered a problem with rear brake slave cyl. I only used Dot 3 conventional fluid. Some very dark fluid came out. In the instuctions it talks about bench bleeding clutch & brake master Cyl
