Little details like the sharpie changing colour while he talks about editing content are what makes a TOT video great. Love this humour / knowledge mix.
Tony! I think I speak for everyone (yes, EVERYONE) when I say we missed you. It’s the little things, pausing to rotate the scotchbrite pad for no discernible reason. The cap on the sharpie changing color. It’s just magical.
I noticed the screwdriver and the scotchbrite but missed the pen top changing colour (or color depending on which side of the pond you’re on) I’m so disappointed in myself. Ha
The only reason that the saw blew-up was that there wasn't a second saw within reach. My experience has been that all saws will work the charm if you have two. If you only bring one with you into the woods it knows its alone and will either refuse to start, run so badly that you can't cut a toothpick or shake and sputter so much that it's basically the equivalent to a Soviet made adult toy.
It is fun because it is true, you will also never run out of gass in a car that hase a filled gascan in the trunk, but the same week you have used the can to fill up the lawnmower, guess what happens in rush hour on a bridge...

Two small additions. You can grease the needle bearing with a chainsaw grease tube, by squinting into the hollow part of the shaft it is on. You should also squirt some grease into the sprocket hole at the end of the chainsaw's bar. I would do this at the same time you flip your bar which should be every 8 hours or when you file down the depth setters (not really rakers). I loved the attention to details on switching maker caps in the intro!

Finally I have something to teach Tony, never thought I'd see the day. The bar should be dressed when flipped, you can make a simple bar dressing jig from a piece of wood, ( mine is black walnut,, ahem ,,) that holds a file flat at 90˚ to the bar, you dress the edges smooth, they will have wear patterns top and bottom, clean out the groove and flip the bar. The 2 sides of the bar are never equal heights, the reason for dressing them flat. The jig ( a small piece of flat wood about 10" long and 1" wide) has a small rabbit to hold the file and 2 separate pieces of wood with wing nuts and bolts to clamp the file. A well dressed bar helps the saw cut straight, not a big issue on a 16" bar, but the smallest bars we ran were 42" in the Canadian west coast. This is very important for nice straight cuts, using the double dogs for bucking logs, not so much on the falling end of the business. Yes I ran double dogs, not everyone does, we owned all our own equipment as contractors. We used Canon bars from Germany, love that German steel, outlasts any bars from other usual brands. Two TOT videos, 3 days... be still my beating heart. You have been greatly missed. Edit: Ok, I'm going to mention it. There is a screwdriver from another dimension that popped into the last video and this one. Be careful some of the bigger shop tools don't also jump dimensions.
I had an 029 for over 20 years, when all of a sudden boom! Loved that saw we cut thousands of cords of wood. I had such a sad day, I bought a MS 661C and it is my new beast! Love you videos! Truth I broke about one needle bearing a year! Easy on yourself I’ve been there done that,,, twice!
Seeing you upload again, reminds me how much I missed seeing your videos Tony! You just have a talent in letting my mechanics mind unwind in the 15 minutes of a vid, you always make me smile! Thanks for that friend!
That happened to my dad's MS290 too, he never greased the bearing, the bearing exploded, the clutch clips broke, the oil pump got some scratches, and half of the crankshaft tip broke... I could probably have welded it and cut a new groove for the C-clip with a dremel, but I found a good genuine crankshaft for 20€ and I wanted to replace the seals anyway.
Yeah most people dont realize that depending on the saw model, the indent in the end of the crankshaft is actually designed to take a bar nose sprocket grease tip, and its one of those - daily maintenance items that get neglected, like cleaning all the shmoo out of the bar rail groove so the oil can actually flow.
6:38 the screwdriver appears on the bench when Tony talks about time travel for the same amount of time it dissapeared in the previous video before returning. I absolutely love little things like this. You're easily my favorite TH-camr by a long shot and I'm happy yo see you back uploading again!
Ah, But it's back again at 7:42 for a further 25 seconds, but then that's the beauty of time travel, it doesn't matter how long it's being used in the future(aka Now) as long as it's only gone from the past for those important 5 seconds(when no-one will miss it and won't affect history)
For me it is the other way round. I could have teached my son so many things in my very well equipped shop, but he was never interested in anything but fishing. Seems like you are the son I never had.
“I did have the foresight to buy two of these…” Yes, always buy extra woodruff keys, circlips, tiny hardware, etc. so much cheaper than a return to the store. Also easier on the knees, searching around with a flashlight and a magnet. Excellent video- again.
I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF at, "Unless you are my sister-in-law" I don't know why, maybe its because I am three Moosheads in, maybe I am just so glad Tony is back.
Somewhere from in the dark recesses of my mind, a tiny memory trickled through telling me that maybe there's a little hole (about 1/10th") in the region of your surgery for pumping grease into the evaporated needle bearing ? Maybe there's a niche on America's got talent for small engine comedians ? You'd fit right in. Great video, mate.
Tony, you are appreciated far more than I could describe. Your humor puts me in a whole other state of mind, a grinning from ear to ear, stress relieved, warm my heart kind of state. Thank you.
Im procrastinating my long overdue Stihl sainchaw restauration video for ages. Now this dude shows off his Stihl. I feel a little pressured here, okay? :D
It’s also good practice when flipping the bar, to take a file and carefully remove the burr that is created by the pressure of the chain wearing against the bar. Helps keep the bar cutting straight when cutting larger diameter logs. Great video!
When i was logging my 16" was my limbs saw , my 20" was my bucking saw (got to be careful how you say that ! ) my 32 " was my felling blade and weighs a ton by the end of the day, Logging is a great job for a young man but it can be very dangerous!
Man I love your videos they always bring a smile to my face when I'm feeling down or am sitting in the hospital getting chemo I always go to a this old tony video keep up the good work I love learning the way you teach I always learn something new when I watch
i work on chainsaws every day, and as a bonafide chainsaw doctor, i will confirm you did get pretty lucky. a relatively common mistake people make (one much dumber than yours, but im usually gentle with how i break that to people) is leaving the chain brake on while the saw is in half choke. which leaves the saw fighting itself until it literally bursts into flames from the friction in the chain brake band and the clutch drum. compared to that, this saw is mint.
I had to burn down my shed along with every tool I’ve ever owned to justify replacing my Sthil for a Husky. I wish I could say “it was worth it”, but l think operator error might have something to do with it. Anyhoo glad you’re not dead ToT and thanks for the great content.
I never had any interest in this as a teen, but between you and that salty Canadian AVE . I have been watching tons of these video's on machine work and now kick my self in the ass I never got involved with it sooner. You learn so much while at the same time having a laugh and that is genius.
@@gregpenismith1248 Yes I soak stuff up like a sponge too. Just wondering, I'm trying to determine the radius on the corner of a table. The only info I have is; the table is square and the crown of the radius is 1/2" shorter than the apex of the corner before the radius was cut. I do not know the cord length. I can pick this up in my machine shop, even if the radius was swung off center. I've been searching the internet all day for a way to determine this on paper, with just those two values. Just checking and hoping you are a mathematician. Thanks
@@davidrule1335 IIRC the mathematics of sqircles and ellipses are (and may be proven to be) impossible in some sense or another. Pehaps you would be far better off with direct measurements or perhaps thinking of it as a curved line (ie bezier) rather than the "radius" (major|minor axis) of an ellipse? 🤷♀️ As a botch (if it is indeed a 90' arc of a circle) wouldn't the radius just be the length from the crown to the missing corner? Either way, I'm pretty sure that the one delta value you have isn't enough information to determine which radius circle your length sits on; since it's just a single scalar value which _could_ land on the circumference of a circle of any size.
I've come to the conclusion that as men age, get married, have kids, etc, this becomes our porn. We no longer fantasize about f__king smoking hot 18 year olds, we fantasize about unf__ing 70 year-old 4-strokes. We don't look forward to sex, we look forward to tooling around in our garage fixing/building things. Because your riding mower will never nag you for cursing in front of the chainsaw; when the lathe chatters, that's a bad thing, not something you need to quietly pay rapt attention to, lest it refuse to do anything for you for a month; and most importantly, your table saw doesn't have emotional needs.
I would only consider myself a "casual" chainsaw user, in that I use one occasionally for small landscaping jobs and/or to clean up the occasional fallen tree. But that being said, when I do chainsaw, it's with my dad's Stihl, which is several years older than my pushing 40 self. The thing is a tank. As long as it's somewhat warm it fires right up and with basic maintenance has never crapped out on us. It I ever have to stop being a mooch and buy my own saw, I know what brand it'll be. :-)
I'd just like you to know that your hiatus lined up almost exactly with my wife's pregnancy. She had just gotten her first positive test around the time of your last (last) video, and now I'm watching with a baby on my chest!

To see if that was a cheap graphic of did he...Noooo! 🤣🤣🤣 This old Tony glad to see you back! This guy, who plays Tony in new videos, is very good actor. I mean, heck, I can't tell them apart, tell the director that new TOT cast is great. Thanks for next season anyway!
I'm glad these are back. My dad's a machinist and this is the only way i can talk to him without awkward silence. I can finally see my dad again with no shame
I, for a brief moment, thought there was a "disturbance in the force". Naw, just a notification that Tony posted a new video (better than a disturbance in the force).. Thanks Tony!
Time traveling screwdrivers aside, I really enjoy these cutting-room-floor bits (the marker gag was awesome btw)! Let me just say that I'm glad you're not dead. I am also beginning to suspect that a time travelling ThisOldTony is actually ThisImmortalTony.
I am devastated, a TOT video that may have actually solved an issue for me! Several years ago I found the workshop fairies had turned my chainsaw onto its side so that all the bar oil leaked out over the chain. They had also sprinkled magic dust over the oil to turn it and the chain into a solid mass. Many hours of soaking in petrol(gas) and scraping. eventually got the chain moving. Ever since then the engine will start but will not tick over, today Tony told me the answer, the clutch must be sticking.
I ran my chainsaw the other day and when I started trying to pull her over she was real stiff. I thought she was a gonner. I sprayed some premix in the carb and she started going easier. Then she fired up. I ran the saw pretty hard the last time I used it then didn't use it for a while. I'm thinking those may have been contributing factors.
Maybe the Best long story joke I've ever heard! He even warned us to patiently wait, and then told us it exploded! I'm hyperventila... ...ing! Thank you a million times!
6:53 It's not This Old Tony who died, but his Father-in-law, my sincerest condolences for that and for Mrs ThisOldTony, hope you and your family is doing well, it's nice to see those hands again, can't wait to learn more about welding =>
@Why So Serious? Good try. You'll be hard pressed to make anyone but yourself feel bad with these ignorant remarks you keep making. Take a look in the mirror boy. That person is responsible for you. Quit fucking it up.
Those little clips on the clutch hold the clutch pads from moving sideways. You can buy them separately, assemble the old clutch and save it ready to use next time. Maybe you will never need it again tho since clutches are a durable part on homeowners saws.
I find that if you have an extra you will never need it, but when you have none, you will need one. So i often save the old parts, and refurbish them, because i know that if i have them in my drawer the new stuff i put in will never break. Usually the parts only break, shortly after i throw away the backup, because the new one seemingly never breaks anyway and i need the space the backup is taking up.
I’m left wondering what the hell happened to that metal table top. I’ve been wondering that since I started watching the channel. Weekly Elephant rave get-together with mandatory carbide sole reinforcement for all dancers heavier than 3 tonnes? Or just elbow imprints from all retakes?
I've been a professional chainsaw operator my entire working life, and this is one of only two or three TH-cam chainsaw videos that haven't induced a stroke while listening to some expert absolutely talk out of his ass for 15 minutes.
Tony, Thoughts and prayers for you and your family for what you have been through. Also happy to see you back, even if less than before due to your new normal. Your humor and subtle sharpie cap color changes, or drivers disappearing and reappearing are hilarious. Look forward to your next upload, and hope you can keep up with it!! -Rene
The timing of this video (and the previous one) were interesting for me. I modified my (old) chainsaw to be a Halloween prop with LEDs instead of a chain. To light the LEDs in sequence (to simulate movement), I attached a magnet to the clutch that triggers reed switches as it spins. There are 72 LEDs in four banks glued to a plywood blade.
Thanks for being back! Waited for you so long. Hope all of you are fine! Don't know why but you are not just one out of many, you are simply the one of all 😁 All the best to you and your family!
Welcome back ToT, glad to see your are back in form. I actually did accidentally install a new chain on a chainsaw (aka the "Lefty Maker") backwards, and after taking a full tank of gas to cut a 2" tree down, I finally came to my senses. Hope to see you in the future referring to 2045 in the past tense! My favorite "tangent" was how much it added to the power bill to time travel...

I just think his future him is just borrowing it for the next vidéo

"Swinging your saw around on Friday nights at the bar" ....That one got me. You still have it Tony....You still have it.
Who doesn't do that?
I'm a Lumberjack and I'm okay!
Thanks Stefan for saving Tonys saw!
It's the little things that make his videos the best...
The fact that he still does it knowing almost no-one will notice it is what makes it for me (I didn't notice it at all)
Or the Sharpie changing colours 😁
To those wondering, it is at 8:27 on this video: th-cam.com/video/-4A3lQBM80o/w-d-xo.html
Ah, But it's back again at 7:42 for a further 25 seconds, but then that's the beauty of time travel, it doesn't matter how long it's being used in the future(aka Now) as long as it's only gone from the past for those important 5 seconds(when no-one will miss it and won't affect history)
Watching your videos is like visiting an uncle that tells you about his hobbies. Such a wholesome experience. I'm glad you're back 🙌
"Sharp side up" is a solid rule to live by. I'll put that next to "When in doubt, numbers out." Thanks Tony
Best moment when I’m in the middle of bingeing TOT videos, TOT releases a new video.
I’ve been trying to figure out why my forrest grew back when I was trying to cut firewood, I went back the the old axe! Thanks ToT!!
Psst! Double check your message!
This Old Tony you are that dad i never had. Teaching me usefull things and dropping dad jokes like there's no tomorrow. I thank you for that.
Holy hell this is the most accurate way I heard tot described. Yes
For me it is the other way round. I could have teached my son so many things in my very well equipped shop, but he was never interested in anything but fishing. Seems like you are the son I never had.
Hi Old Tony It's nice to have you back . kudos Nick
“I did have the foresight to buy two of these…”
Yes, always buy extra woodruff keys, circlips, tiny hardware, etc. so much cheaper than a return to the store. Also easier on the knees, searching around with a flashlight and a magnet.
Excellent video- again.
We missed you uncle tony good to have ya back
I'm so glad to see you back! I was checking your account once every couple weeks and softly sobbing there for a while.
Had you been subscribed you would not have to look, just wait for that notificication that ToT had made a new video :)
@Why So Serious? ok dude.
@Why So Serious?you ok?
@Why So Serious? So you work through the comments saying people are pathetic and then Like your own comment? Guess what you are?
I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF at, "Unless you are my sister-in-law" I don't know why, maybe its because I am three Moosheads in, maybe I am just so glad Tony is back.
I didnt get It
That, I'm embarrassed to say (maybe, maybe proud), took me a very long time to process.
@@alk555 is... oh no...
@@tommasofossati5123 Moosehead is a beer. And a mighty fine one at that. Available in a Western Canadian province near you!
@@lwizzit hey hey hey, eastern ones too
".. Turning firewood back into piles of branches.." Genuine, laugh out loud moment!
"a little disjointed maybe"
Man, all your videos are a little disjointed. And I love it. Never stop.
Tony, you are appreciated far more than I could describe. Your humor puts me in a whole other state of mind, a grinning from ear to ear, stress relieved, warm my heart kind of state. Thank you.
As a tree engineer, this was fun. I've definitely forgot to put the bearing back a couple times.
Have you ever forgot plug cover when soldering full scart cable?
@@yetihehe did you use some "macgyver" tape or redo the whole job (not forgetting it a second time)
@@jyvben1520 Redo, cursing my forgetness the whole time.
I'm so glad you are back, your video's make me laugh out loud a lot :)
So good to have you back! Your calming voice is needed in today's hectic world ☺️
Im procrastinating my long overdue Stihl sainchaw restauration video for ages. Now this dude shows off his Stihl. I feel a little pressured here, okay? :D
WE MISSED YOU SO MUCH TONY!!! SO glad to have you back.
That was fast 😂😂 glad to have your humor back!! 💚💚💚 As to the impact spots, tis but a plastic-flesh wound ;D
So good to have you back.
It’s also good practice when flipping the bar, to take a file and carefully remove the burr that is created by the pressure of the chain wearing against the bar. Helps keep the bar cutting straight when cutting larger diameter logs. Great video!
Whoa! 2 ToT videos in 1 week!? Christmas came early this year!
When i was logging my 16" was my limbs saw , my 20" was my bucking saw (got to be careful how you say that ! ) my 32 " was my felling blade and weighs a ton by the end of the day, Logging is a great job for a young man but it can be very dangerous!
Don't you hate it when you're just bucking a round and some feller...
Great to see you back TOT! Not even a month ago I was pondering your absence and I hope things are going well or at least picking back up!
Tony and zip ties..... Night and day. 😁
I am also a chainsaw doctor, burnt clutches are some of my least favorite repairs, can confirm, this saw is mint
Both of you better keep that a secret from TH-camrs, lest you face a sudden surge from fools chasing memes spawned by maniacs.
I find having at least a basic understanding of how somethings work can apply to random shit I would have never thought.
Thanks
@@davidrule1335 you need radius gauges
you can print some out on paper in a pinch.
🤷♀️
As a botch (if it is indeed a 90' arc of a circle) wouldn't the radius just be the length from the crown to the missing corner?
"We all know its best to ignore stuff until it gets worse"
Amen brother
I'd just like you to know that your hiatus lined up almost exactly with my wife's pregnancy. She had just gotten her first positive test around the time of your last (last) video, and now I'm watching with a baby on my chest!
This Old Tony went to film school during the pandemic! Got us on a cliffhanger waiting for the next episode! To see if that was a cheap graphic of did he...Noooo! 🤣🤣🤣 This old Tony glad to see you back! You’re the first channel here on you tube that I saw doing machining and have been watching every since got me through the pandemic!
Unfortunately, pretty sure he 'sploded.
This guy, who plays Tony in new videos, is very good actor. I mean, heck, I can't tell them apart, tell the director that new TOT cast is great. Thanks for next season anyway!
I'm so glad you're back to posting videos. I look forward to every day I see a new one pop up. Thank you for what you do.
Glad you're back. With blue and black sharpies to accent the telling of a good ol yarn, about the life and times of a chainsaw.
I'm glad these are back. My dad's a machinist and this is the only way i can talk to him without awkward silence. I can finally see my dad again with no shame
Again already? AWESOME!! Keep them coming 👍🏼
I feel like I'm dreaming. 2 ToT videos. Welcome back buddy!
This Old Tony is posting videos again. Nature is healing.
Rainforest issue resolved! We sneak in the camp and reverse all the chainsaw blades!!
It took me 7 minutes to realize this video wasn't uploaded 2 years ago. I'm so used to watching old videos it goes through me different
Congrats on the 1 million subs!
I, for a brief moment, thought there was a "disturbance in the force". Naw, just a notification that Tony posted a new video (better than a disturbance in the force).. Thanks Tony!
Yeah, I had a brief feeling of "hmm, you should check yt, there is something there", checked and yup, there is new TOT video.
whenever This old tony posts something its a good day
Time traveling screwdrivers aside, I really enjoy these cutting-room-floor bits (the marker gag was awesome btw)!
We missed you TOT! I hope your family is doing well and your family is getting back to normal
We call those "jesus clips" because when they go flying off you go "JESUS!" haha
no, they are called Jesus clips because he is the only one that knows where it went.
I call them AH F#CK !! clips, for the same reason.
Yup, Jesus Clips are what I call them.
I've met many a Jesus clip in my time.... always only very briefly though for some peculiar reason.
The trick is to set things up carefully...
Then you can catch them with your eyelid.

@Why So Serious? Good try. You'll be hard pressed to make anyone but yourself feel bad with these ignorant remarks you keep making. Take a look in the mirror boy. That person is responsible for you. Quit fucking it up.
I'm less worried about the bar being on upside down than I am about that tool that's been popping in and out of existence.
God thank you. he's back missed you man
I did not realize just how big a hole in my life not having your content had created. Thanks for the new uploads!
The disturbance in the force was strong during your absence. Long live the king.
I was just watching old ToT videos when this wideo notification blew right in to my face. Someone is hearing my prayers 😆
I've been a professional chainsaw operator my entire working life, and this is one of only two or three TH-cam chainsaw videos that haven't induced a stroke while listening to some expert absolutely talk out of his ass for 15 minutes.
Tony,
Thoughts and prayers for you and your family for what you have been through.
Also happy to see you back, even if less than before due to your new normal. Your humor and subtle sharpie cap color changes, or drivers disappearing and reappearing are hilarious. Look forward to your next upload, and hope you can keep up with it!!

“This whole thing may have been my fault.
… Man that was really hard to say on camera.”
Brute force honesty.
Loved it Tony! I’m
Good to hear of a design which doesn't just use an Arduino.
Can't wait for the future episode where we get to see why that screwdriver is phasing in and out of the time space continuum.
Thanks for being back! Waited for you so long. Hope all of you are fine! Don't know why but you are not just one out of many, you are simply the one of all 😁
All the best to you and your family!
