      Love those flex head ratchets, you can fold the handle, then use two hands on the handle to spin it like you do with a speed handle. Faster than an air ratchet, given room to use and some experience.

    I'm guessing there used to be a second, weaker spring on the back side of the reduced section inside the barrel. When someone took it apart, or maybe when it broke, the spring went sproing across the shop it's now under a cabinet somewhere.
    The spring you've got provides the main detenting force; the second spring takes up the slop and provides some resistance for the button-pushing.

      I'm glad I scrolled down to find this, because it's exactly what I was going to suggest: there's a spring missing.

    • @CJ-ty8sv
      @CJ-ty8sv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      No, no second spring or missing parts and yes, the spring is supposed to be in the front.
      When they are installed, the plunger is proloading the spring and all slop is removed and the assembly works flawlessly.
      The only reason I know is because we use to have a large detent locking turntable at work that had a release detent mechanism identical to that one in it got broken at the mount collar just like that one did and we did the same thing.... Machined a new body from bar stock...
      Not sure if every application is / was the same but for our turntable, when it was properly adjusted and installed, the release lever sat at about a 25° relative to the body and this gave just enough movement that when the lever was parallel to the body (squeezed as much as it would go), the detent would just release from the pocket it was in on the table.
      Basically the adjustment of the plunger threads adjusts the amount of preload tension (well compression) was on the spring when installed and the adjustment on the clevis threads set the angle that the release lever was at when installed.

    You probably know this but I'm going to write it anyway. The style torque wrench you have (or torque yank as we used to call them) actually use a pivot block instead of detent. Think of holding two blocks together and you press them together. Now push one of them in a perpendicular direction while squeezing. The more you squeeze, the harder it is to get them to pivot.
    Snap on actually made another type that had a slip mechanism similar to the center punch too.

    Be careful Tony - I think people are just pretending not to know stuff and are leaving comments on your videos to guilt-trip you into making another one. They should be ashamed of themselves. Anyway, how do they make those ball bearings on the detents so round ?

    • @ThadEGinathom
      @ThadEGinathom 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      When they take the block of steel, wrapped in a cloth, and hit it with a hammer, they use exactly the right hammer and hit it exactly right. Result is exactly-sized, exactly-round ball bearings.
      Of course, this is mostly done on an industrial scale. A clue about Tony's day job, maybe?

      Serious answer: Drop towers. If you drop a liquid, it forms a perfect sphere while it's falling. So mostly they just build really big towers (The afformentione "Drop towers") and sprinkle liquid steel/ally inside it. It forms a sphere and solidifies as it falls.

      Of course you can. These things are called *spring* detents because they hold back spring. Studies have shown that they reach maximum efficacy if you deploy them a short while (two to three weeks) before spring would nominally begin. But be careful - spring detents cannot hold back spring forever.

    Take an old socket and grind a bevel around one end. Use the socket along a hammer (or a 20 ton press as long as it isn't a boring grayish-color) and swage the detent hole. The socket will self-center on the ball and simultaneously hold it in while you swage it.

      You know what, that actually seems like a pretty reasonable assumption. I was wondering why the level you pressed down was damn near 45* to the body of the part, but it would make sense if its mounted upright and you press it with your foot. I haven't seen too too many of them but the ones I have usually have that similar shaped pin head and it might explain why there is so much play if it doesnt affect how it operates.

    If I were a marketeer I would add a checkvalve to make sure the checkvalve itself keeps getting lubricated. That would make the part look more advanced.
    And don't forget the BPA-free foodsafe recycled plastic handle that gets rotten up within 3 months. You don't want this part to outlast it's warranty period!

    Neat! One of my first jobs was working at a torque wrench factory. My job was installing the socket retention balls. And it went like you said, drop the spring in, then the BB, then stake the edge of the hole. It wasn't a press though, it was more like a huge power hammer that would come down and smash the edge of the hole in less than a second.

    We use these in the orthopedic bracing industry. The ball is set using a hand punch called a corking tool. It is created very similar to the one you peened over except it is done with a punch. The surface has to be flat, so you would have to mill a flat first, drill a hole for the spring/ball diameter, then push the ball down with the punch. It is then struck sharply with a hammer to swage the rim in to hold the ball. It will look just like your ratchet detent when done. Here are a couple of pictures at the links. The hole for the punch is obviously a little smaller than the diameter of the ball so the ball can't come out. P.S. If you are creating an oiler type application, you would use a smaller through drill out the back side so the spring would be contained, but the oil could drip through.
    You won't likely be able to order from the links provided, and I can't find a public source, But I think you can "make like picture"
