  • Elden Ring certainly made good use of all the scraps it could take from the previous games.

Another interesting detail conveying the intention for Rosaria to have been a boss fight is her character ID, c5210. Characters are often "grouped" together by their IDs, with From Software reserving certain ID ranges for certain types of NPCs. Going back at least as far as Demon's Souls, the 5000 range of IDs has historically been where they put the bosses. Out of every NPC in the 5000 range in Dark Souls III, only two aren't bosses, the Fire Witch and Rosaria. I made a previous video covering how the Fire Witch was likely designed as a boss that was later replaced by Pontiff and now we can see Rosaria's in a similar position.

Of course both if them are barefoot too, truly showcasing Miyazaki's vision

One thing I really appreciated in Elden Ring is that they took a step back from how grotesque and grayed out everything in DS3 felt. It made a lot of sense for things to be that way in the decaying, near burnt out world of DS3, and I'm glad that's all it was. It wasn't a sign of their visual design for Soulsborne games going forward.

The fact that the scholars respawn by falling from the cribs somehow makes that fight even more creepy.

If those girls from Rennala's fight were more present in Raya Lucaria, and they acted like the slugs from DS3, that would be way more terrifying than a couple of stone masks with tiny shields

It's also worth noting that the Deacons of the deep (the bossfight of the area Rosaria is in) share the same "hot potato" mechanic with Rennala's first phase: only one of them must be hit to go on.

Another thing is that Rosaria has a soul item. You get it from Leohard's questline. Other than the demon under the catacombs, she's the only non-boss to have a boss soul, and the only non-enemy to have one (if I recall correctly).

I wonder if there’s any hidden data that could tie Malenia to Sekiro. A lot of her moves seem straight out of Sekiro, like her kick which has the same visual effect as Senpou Monks

Ima be honest, I always though Rosaria had slug legs with a human Torso, I didn't realise she's embracing one of the mangrubs.

Rosaria being an unused boss might also explain that mysterious treasure chest that Limit Breakers found under her bed all those years ago.

I always thought Rosaria was meant to have a boss fight. Itrs a mix of her motif, the connections to a questline and her location in the map. When you come across her it feels like a pretty great time for a boss fight and I always thought it was odd that there wasnt one

Another DS3 character that I see having some connection with Rennala, is Filianore. There’s the obvious connection with both of them caring for an egg and with the "don’t disturb their slumber" that we hear from the other characters associated with them, but both of them also share similar resting poses and physical features with one another. I of course do not know all of the details behind their development, but these similarities to both Rosaria and Filianore are something that I really jump out to me.

The concept of failed ascension/transformation/transcendence via unnatural means is a very common theme throughout the Souls games if you look for it. Seathe and his crystal experimentations, the various dragon cults throughout DS1-3, Rosaria's mangrubs, Renalla's sweetings/Boc, and practically the entire lore and basis of Bloodborne. The idea of failed metamorphoses seems like something Miyazaki is big about.

This is always one of my favorite things that Fromsoft does. They’re always revisiting old concepts that may have been scrapped or otherwise underdeveloped in previous games. No good idea is left untouched, and eventually each of their ideas gets polished up and used, even if it’s years and several games later.

Some Rosaria shuffling might also explain the unused chest hidden under her bed, and damn that doorway makes a super cool boss fog wall, I'm almost sad we didn't get to have it.

It fees like From really scraped together all the partially completed concepts/code/animations etc. from old game so they would have enough content to make the Elden RIng's scale just absolutely massive. Has me super excited for what they do next, it'll probably be a new era of ideas!
