    I understand the confusion about the term "saturated" in this context, because in the visual art community "saturated" means very bright, and "desaturated" means the colour is closer towards grey. So it feels like the opposite to how i normally think of the word "saturated" when it comes to colour

    • @uwuowo4069
      @uwuowo4069 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Also confused me but I think it means when you have a mix of a bunch of saturated colors, they mud together and create an unclear colour. So its not so much "saturated" as "so many saturated colors that we're back into muted tones"

    • @mjfanta1915

      Color saturation refers to the intensity of colour, as the saturation increases, the colours appear to be more pure so the definition in this tutorial is incorrect. Highly saturated colours are the OPPOSITE to muted & greyish colours ❤💛💙

Yet I always felt somewhat off in those colours. Have always been drawn to and felt comfortable in soft muted colours…..after a lot of research I realized that I am a soft summer! Great video! I think there's a confusion about saturation. "Saturated" actually refers to a color's purest form. When you say a color is saturated you mean it's the most clear it can get. The opposite of saturated is desaturated, wich you get as the color looses it's vividness. The thing is most people relate "muted" with grayish tones, but in reality, with a medium value color, you'll notice it starts to look more grayish as it desaturates, but with a really dark or a really light value color, you'll only notice it by the absence of tone.

    • @tamaraarriola6582
      @tamaraarriola6582 ปีที่แล้ว +109

      As an illustrator, I was thinking the same. For example, if you totally desaturate a picture it will transform in a black and white image. On the other hand, a highly saturated image would have the brightest, more vibrant colors, the more vivid version of them.
      There are so many tricky words about color, it's perfectly normal be a little confused about them. 😊👍 Great video as always!

      In art classes, I got the same definition of saturated. Pure color without white, gray, black or brown added. Secondary and tertiary colors which are Blends, can also be saturated, with no white &/or black added. In some systems, clear colors are always either tinted with white or left clear and saturated. Like springs, with a touch or more of white. Or Icy Winter colors, white with a tiny hint of pure color. Summers have a touch of gray in the colors. Autumns have a touch of black added to their colors, but some autumn colors are so muddy (thinking of some hideous camping clothing) that just frankly don't bring a glow to anyone's face that I can find. Who knows what they put into those colors, lol! That said, certain colors with a touch of black added is stunning on dark winters (and cool summers, which is probably the closest to her soft summer.) I like the 16 type system, and I feel like I fall closest into “dark summer“ but I’ve never seen that type anywhere except on the Kettlewell Website.

I feel like with most of these color analysis videos with women being white or light in color, you guys never really go into actual black women, which I understand may not be your fault. But I would love to see more people pull in color analysis that is geared for women of darker skin as well & include us more. Determining whether you're warm or cool is way more difficult than I initially thought it was. My mom and I always thought we were both very cool toned, but after swatching my mom yesterday with the various colors we have around the house, lo and behold, she glows in the bright, *warm* colors! We were both so used to seeing her skin in cool tones, that it took us awhile to recognize how much better she looked in warm. Then I got to thinking about me, wondering if I was truly a soft summer because I had recently found a very muted, very blue top that washed me out. So I looked up several soft autumn color palettes and thought, "Would you lookie there, all of those colors are the colors that look good on me." I can't wear *clear* warm colors (the horror of me in bright yellow or orange 😬), and so I always thought I must be cool. Nope. Just need to be wearing *muted* warm colors instead.

    It’s so hard to be objective about these things! I thought I was cool for years and years, mainly because I have blue veins. Thought I had super grey ashy hair. Wore a lot of turquoise, which overpowered me (but brought out the blue in my very… hmm… bluegreengraynotreallyacolour eyes).
    Began to realise only last year that I’m neutral and leaning towards warm when I got a muted terracotta coloured t-shirt as a gift, thought “oh no, I’m never gonna be able to wear this colour…” and put it on only to find it brought a healthy glow to my skin and coppery and brown tones in my hair. Now I’m pretty certain I’m a soft autumn.
    However, since I’m more neutral than warm my first feature is muted and then light, so I need to stay away from the brighter colours of soft autumn, or pair them with neutrals such as off white.

    • @wanjahe8749
      @wanjahe8749 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      If you don't really click with either of those seasons, maybe play around with some summer colours. A lot of people think if they have darker skin that leans yellow or olive they need to be warm seasons but they can totally be cool seasons. Especially olive skin gets mistaken for warm toned skin a lot. Take Shay Mitchell, she has olive, bronzed skin but she looks best in cool, bright colours, while the warm honey blonde balayage she used to wear did nothing for her complexion. At first glance one might think she was an autumn but she is actually a winter. Now I think we can rule out winter for you if that is you in the foto,but you could still be a summer if you feel like you lean quite light. If you look at Zoe Saldana she has quite dark skin from a eurocentric point of view but she has a lightness to her appearance and looks her very best in powdery pinks and other summer colours. She is a soft summer.
      I used to have a similar problem the other way around I knew I was very light skinned and warm toned so I thought I could only be a spring, since I wasn't dark enough for an autumn. But as it turns out my colours are medium light and very muted, so spring colours just look loud and out of place on me. As it turns out I'm actually a soft autumn. It's not about the skin tone it's about the general appearance of your colours so sometimes too much emphasis on skintone can make things hard
      Edit: I was thinking of soft summer since that is right next to soft autumn on the colour wheel and those two seem to get mixed up a lot. I like to use Lucy Hale as an example as well. She has brown hair, hazel green eyes and very light, slightly olive skin so she could be confused for a soft autumn but she looks best in soft, pastel summer colours

      What’s annoying is I’m fair skinned and everyone automatically assumes because I’m fair I must have a pink undertones and classes me as a winter. But I actually feel like I look awful in the winter colour palette and I never understood why. I even hate cool toned blonde hair next to my skin tone. My skin in my opinion is more neutral. I actually think I’m a “clear spring”. I read somewhere that clear springs can often be mistyped as winters. When I l read that it all made sense. I held up the spring colour palette next to my complexion and it really suits me.

    I think the clear/saturated-muted-soft-dimentional names are still confusing. I would opt for something like "streamlined vs. complex" colouring. This way it is clear what is meant: is your colour easy to name, it's simple and straighforward? Or is it compound, complex. with many add-ons, hues and tints mixed in?

    • @kjeanpociask
      @kjeanpociask ปีที่แล้ว +89

      Totally agree. Art School graduate and color theory nerd here. The confusion is coming from a misuse of ‘saturated’. Saturated means ‘vivid; very bright, full and free from an admixture of white and/or black.’ I.e., there isn’t any grey mixed into the color (because in order to add grey, you have to mix in white + black). The word you’re looking for is ‘desaturated’ to mean muted or less vivid.
      So the terms that line up are: saturated, vivid, clear, bright, easily named
      vs.
      desaturated, muted, soft, hazy, faded, muddied or dull, not easily named - more complex. (Some of these terms feel less than flattering, which I think might be why there is such a variety in use - people are trying to avoid words like ‘dull’ or ‘muddy’.

      There are also 16-box color systems, and some people are just in the middle of a cool to warm spectrum and can wear either. Or else their skin tans more at certain times and they can wear a more intense color at that time. All kinds of things can be at play. I also feel like I have oddball characteristics, (and people have tried to put me in all four boxes at one time or another with spring the least successful), and I don’t think there’s a single box that perfectly fits me but the one that is closest is something called dark summer which is different from soft summer, but leans into winter and autumn. It’s not a convenient color palette for living in a very hot area, but it’s always the most becoming on me. Kettlewell website has it on their website, along with more info on finding one's colors. In the end, I kind of did what you did, I focused on what looks good on me. And I experimented with wearing colors from adjacent palettes, which confirmed that those colors suck on me. 😂 I have a book called “the triumph of individual style,“ which was fun and informative. it encourages you to look at ALL of your features individually, all of your proportions, as well as your coloring, and how to create outfits that reflect those elements. I had fun one year going to the store to see What scale of print worked best on me, what kind of stripe, what kind of plaid (none at all), sheen/texture, embellishments like sequins versus beading, Type of embroidery, the different lines of jackets, and of course colors. The book helped me pay attention to the scale of neck lines, all kinds of things. It made it very clear why I continue to reach for the same things in my closet. As I did my shopping I used voice dictation on my phone as I went from rack to rack and section from section, holding up anything and everything to me and making a note of my reactions of good, bad or indifferent, and specific things I liked or did not like. I did that on a couple of other trips to the mall, a few months apart. That way I could span the fashion seasons a little bit. My impressions were remarkably consistent and now act as a guide. From my notes, I made a short list of words that describe my style preferences that I use to evaluate things. If an outfit that I am looking at doesn’t evoke that list of qualities, there’s a 99.9% chance that I’m not gonna like it on my body. So you can apply your own observations to all those details, too, and make it even easier to shop.

    I think it would be great to have a colour wheel for every continent/ complexity classification; let’s say southamerican and african (with often green undertones) heritage, asian heritage and european/australien/northamerican heritage. Because when it comes to comparing my complexity (european) with one from e.g. african ethnicity the differences are so confusing. I can totally imagine that people with african/southamerican complexity having a hard time looking to the ‚white‘ colour wheel to picture themselves.

    A thought to share in case it might help someone:
    Something that really helped me in being able to tell the undercurrent color of a person is how they look against their background. Like for example, your background is grey and you still look really alive and healthy in front of it. That tells us you have either grey or another matching color to grey in your undercurrent coloring. If a person has a warmer undercurrent they would look kind of sickly, pale, ghostly or tired against the grey background bc their undercurrent doesn't match the grey. Grey is typically a cool color, so if one looks good against a grey background it means they are cool toned. If they look good against both cool and warm backgrounds it means they are neutral toned.

My most prominent feature is definitely that I am so light, but I’ve struggled with figuring out if I am warm or cool as I fit both silver and gold. The vein test is also of no use on my skin. From your description of saturation it is also clear that I am a saturated type. My eye colour has always been a bit of an enigma. They are blue, but I have gotten questions about them being green all my life, even from close relatives, and my hair has strands that go from extremely light to quite dark while still being a blonde. I'm so glad that you focus on colours of the face, eyes and hair to determine whether someone is cool or warm because that's exactly what I do, and it's far more accurate. I have a yellow overtone to my skin, so I often get forced into warm colours, even though my hair is ashen dark-brown, my eyes are a cloudy hazel and my skin has a grey undertone to it making me a pale cool-toned olive (I also have a slight green undertone). Olive skintones are all over the place in marketing because they're wrongly attributed to skin colour instead of skin undertone. Just because you are tanned doesn't make you olive.
    I am a Dark Winter but since I am an olive I have to stay away from bright tones because they will wash me out.

    This has helped me see why I've struggled with colour analysis for so long: I don't seem to be clearly anything!
    Dark or light: I have extremely fair skin for my ethnicity (Mediterranean/Hispanic), medium-dark brown hair and dark brown eyes
    Cool or warm: my skin is actually pretty neutral, my hair learns cool, my eye are very warm. From experience, neutral-cool colours are best, but it's definitely not something I would've figured out from my features at all
    Saturated or clear: I have olive undertones so multiple colours are a natural part of my skin tone, my hair is pretty saturated I think (the exact shade it looks changes a lot with lighting), my eyes are more saturated than you'd expect considering how dark they are. But I know from experience that black works for me like no other, which seems to contradict all that
    I've considered BW (feels too bright), DW (feels too heavy), TW (too cool) and SSu (but the black thing). Maybe I just need a different approach to colour!

      Same here, I felt I am medium/neutral/moderate, etc in all the values used. I am Spaniard but very pale, almost totally neutral, with ashy caramel brown hair wich gets blonder in summer, but my eyes are a very dark brown. I really don't feel I fit perfectly in any season, but maybe I am too pale, or my eyes too dark for whatever my ethnicity would be.

    • @AndreeaMitan
      @AndreeaMitan ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Same here. For many years I wore black and vivid winter colors, as well as a lot of makeup, because my dark circles were very obvious while I was wearing those colors. I had my hair dyed jet black for a number of years, and I wore lots of lipstick in cooler reds. Snow White was my icon. I now see that I actually lean towards Autumn, and I find that medium shades of green (sage, olive, even uniform green), and some caramel shades make me look best. Wearing them also helps me ditch the heavy under eye makeup. The only colors that really suit me are medium/ moderate in all values used, as @Tamara Arriola pointed, and they need to be natural (as in colors you may find in forests or natural fibers, such as linen). It is a pity, as I love black and bright colors, yet they make me look older and tired.

She looks sensational in neutrals, especially when they are made of linen. I covet that look so much! She can wear black but it just isn’t as successful on her as the light soft whites with taupes and beiges. The black wears HER, instead of the other way around.

      @amywhoknits ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you have quite high colour contrast, and lean cool, makes sense you have thought you are one of the winters, TW sounds like a good fit as the brightness seems to clash. I find that if you have more neutral colouring, you can choose the more neutral colours in the palette. Or perhaps balance out a cooler colour with a more neutral one when you are playing with colours outside of black. For example, more jewel toned looks that lean cool but they’re not super dark.

      if you want to go buy a general rule, if you look good in black and truer colors you are in winter. If you can you get away with wearing black but it isn’t the best dark neutral on you, or if you need a touch of black to deep in the pure colors of dark winter, you might be a dark autumn or deep autumn. I was still a bit unsure because even if I'm high contrast I'm not SUPER high contrast as some Dark Autumns I've seen online, I have lighter (somewhat golden and tbh kinda cool) medium brown hair and a medium-light-warm-olive skintone so it would always confuse me. Zendaya is such a good example! I think Natalie Portman is another good example of ''bright for an Autumn'' (often categorized as Dark Autumn from what I've seen).

    Thank you for the video! This is the first time I've heard this definition of "saturated" but it makes so much more sense for the specific context of color typing -- I've only ever heard the term "saturated" to mean "intense," which always made my attempts at typing myself not feel intuitively "right." I love that you referenced Merriam! I adore her color system and body geometry system, as I am such a mix of features and colors that I seem to defy and confuse every single typing system otherwise 😂 per her color typing, I seem to be extreeeeemely close to neutral, but very, very, very, VERY slightly warm and delicate with strong olive undertone (I did the lip test just now and I seriously think my lips are right between peach and purple -- cool test btw, had never heard of it!), which makes things....tricky. By the color season test, I appear to be some type of Autumn, but because of my green undertones, lots of colors from the winter and summer palettes suit me better than the autumn ones. Cool and muted greens, steel blues, warm and muted rosy pinks, and russet/copper tones seems to suit me best. Add in some super strong ethereal essence and a body type that seems to not fit any of Kibbe's types 😂😂

      @Bennyedit99 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I find myself in the same exact situation as you, I couldn't type myself. My olive skin brings out a slightly yellow, almost sickly undertone if paired with some colors of the autumn or winter palettes, but at the same time I find the best colors to complement it also in these two families.

    • @FilippaSkog
      @FilippaSkog ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe you should take a look at the cooler tones of soft autumn? You’ll find some jades, soft warmish blues and rosy pinks there. Those work very for me, because I’m neutral too and leaning slightly more towards warm than cool too.
      Edit: it’s also a wheel for a reason! 😊 If you’re leaning one way or another you can usually strategically borrow colours from the closest neighbour, in your (and mine) case soft summer.

    • @berlineczka
      @berlineczka ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think the olives are just outside of the seasonal analysis. Maybe we need a 16 colour wheel, and create olive subtypes to each.
      Then we'd have olive winter ( these could be e.g. Audrey Tautou, Liya Kebede, Paz Vega, Leopsie, Audrey Coyne, Nina Dobrev, Rachel Weisz, Ruth Negga),
      olive autumn (e.g. Aishwarya Rai, Eva Mendes, Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Freida Pinto, Megan Markle),
      olive summer (e.g. Kim Kardashian, Nazanin Boniadi, Adriana Lima, Gemma Chang, Thandie Newton),
      and olive spring (Eva Longoria, Mila Kunis, Rihanna).
      I may lay completely wrong with some of the sorting, though. There is no bulletproof way to sort the olive skin tones into the seasonal categories, and I went with gut feeling.

    My skin tone is so comlex. Only thing that I'm sure is that I'm muted and medium contrast. I'm a SN, with a lot of grey in my skin tone (as you said saturated) medium ash brown hair, hazel eyes. Skin is light in winter and medium tan in summer, tone is confusing neutral, with pink, yellow and a lot of grey. Veins are green. At summer easy tan never burns, and get lot of yellow in skin and hair. I can pull off cool pink, cool lime, warm vanilla yellow, cool cobalt blue, warm camel, warm khaki, muted colors, and always look bad in any any orange, light grey fits on me, in dark grey and whole black outfit look like dead... I cannot find myselft within these types, feeling like crazy neutral cameleon 🤯

    This was a really excellently presented video.🙌👍 For years, I thought I was a Bright or Cool Winter but I think now I realize that I'm actually a Soft Summer. I used to dye my hair black since age 15 but at 39 shaved it all off and discovered my natural shade was dark ashy-grey chocolate brown. My skin is light olive/neutral and I can easily wear gold/silver/rose gold. Actually rose-gold jewellery is nearly IDENTICAL to my skin tone!! My skin turns exactly rose-gold with any sun exposure. My eyes are cloudy grey-blue-khaki green with no warmth and jet-black rings (wolf eyes😉 🐺). I have really grey undertones and suit Asian/very canary-yellow 🐥 undertoned foundation best. It's hard when you're mixed-race to know but I think you're "dimensional" explanation helps a lot. Most beauty counter people see olive skin as warm and blue eyes as cool but true warm/cool colours look deadful on me and I disappear. More faded/muted colours bring me to life. Sad though for me as I love strong autumny colours (browns/yellows/reds) so much more lol 😏😒 I hate wishy-washy/pastels 🤢😝😬🥴😵

    • @onica1330
      @onica1330 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I think she used the word saturated incorrectly in the video. (or maybe it has a different meaning in fashion). To me Saturated means vivid colors, so it is the opposite of muted.

    • @calliope6623
      @calliope6623 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had this same confusion myself. I found something online about it. They said that dark autumn and bright spring both look nice in bright, strong colors, and both of them can pull off some shades of black too (I know that's controversial, but I have warm tones and look very good in black). They said the difference is that dark autumn looks particularly good with all the dark brown and dark greenish brown colors too, but not so much in bright yellow because it's too light for them, and bright spring is the opposite. They can do light, bright colors, but not as much the dark muted colors. So with that reasoning, I settled on dark autumn.

    I had my colours done professionally and I am supposedly 1% of the popular where I am actually a Warm Autumn though alot of the tests will learn me to light and cool. I can't actually remember the exact reasons for why she said this is. But I spent years trying to understand why, being I'm fairly sure I was cool I wasn't working great with Spring colours. I then tried the only other, what seemed to me obvious option in Summer and found the colours were just not quiet right. It had never came to my mind, being so pale white with light greeny blue eyes and blue veins I could be a Autumn. Since finding out, it hasn't made it much easier as I always need to find the lightest and most muted of the warm Autumn colours, as I just tip the scale.

My eyes are a deep brown but my hair is a lighter version of the very dark hair that we have (it’s still dark obviously, but it’s comparatively lighter when I stand next to my peers). My lips are peachy and become a gross yellowy creamsicle color when I’m sick, but I don’t look good in anything too warm (or too cool for that matter). I also don’t look good in really bright/clear or really greyed/dusty/muted colors either. Everything needs to kind of be in the middle so I end up picking a little bit from a bunch of seasons.

    You seem to have a more clear chroma than muted…I would say ‘bright, cool and light’ according to Jen Vax’s “your colour style“ theory.
    Her system is an advance on the 12 season model in my experience as, like Merriam, she places a high importance on chroma.
    I think this is basically important if you are light - which can easily be confused with muted. The cutaways you use show you in fairly clear, light cool colours, and I just don’t think muddy colours would work on you.
    Also, as you know you are cool, I am puzzled why you wear orangey lipstick, which in my opinion isn’t flattering (you are so pretty!) and TBH lowers my confidence in your analysis abilities… sorry to be blunt!

      I think you’re wrong and right. You’re right that she has more brightness than a True Summer. But you’re confused about Light Summers being muted. Here’s something I copied from a color analyst.
      Light Summer is the very beginning of Summer. It borders Spring. Recall that Spring colors are light, bright and warm. So adding a little Spring to Summer makes the summer colors lighter, brighter and just slightly yellow-y.
      We say that Summer is a season characterized by softness. But your Light Summer colors aren't particularly soft. They're suprisingly un-Summery in their level of saturation - bright enough to rival Light or Warm Spring's palette.
