Your romantic colour imo doesn't refer to a cultural convention 'red is romance' rather it points at your arousal colour (and that's the reason why red is seen as a 'romantic' colour too). Your romantic colour is your orgasmic / flushed colour.
I think a lot of people are taking this, too literally. I’m a black woman and this is super easy to understand (maybe also because I’m an artist and I use color therapy to help with pstd and depression so I’ve delved into the complexities of color as well (shade, tone, depth) and this is so much more than what Ellie can explain in one video. As a black woman who followed this method, I was able to find that I don’t need to literally take the shades of my skin or features (which will always give me the darker category because I am a woman of color) and transfer those exactly into colors. For example in the video Ellie’s veins are not purple but her color is lavender because of the way it looks up against those feature or enhances them. My eyes, hair, and skin are all browns. My eyes however have the tiniest gold flecks when I stand in the sunlight which led me to pick golden champagne color that makes my skin also look naturally glowy. My veins (the parts I can see) are like a dark forest green or sea green and so I picked a dark teal color to play off of that. Nowhere am I literally gold, teal, and purple, but those are the colors I was able to see played the best off my features and give myself the option of using the gold in the place of a stark white if I want to spice the white up a bit. What women of color need to look at are the undertones of a lot of things, because even though I’m dark, my undertones are yellow, and so, as long as I have some thing with a yellow or warm undertone, typically I’m in a safe area with colors and my mom has yellow in her undertones too and she wears the last to darkest shade of Fenty if that helps anyone too, but her version of white is rose gold since it plays off her skins natural tone and highlights. @@palomapardo1744 what me and my mom and sis have always done is press a finger against our palm or wrist and it happens super quick but it’s the color your skin is when you let go - but before it turns red from the blood flow returning to the area. Mine is like a pale yellow almost butter or white wine color so that’s why I chose the shade of champagne I did, my moms skin turned a pale berry or coral color so she picked rose gold! My litter sister is a bit more of light olive tone and she picked like a dark pearl shade like Ellie but the sheen still gives it a champagne look like mine - I hope that helps!
@@palomapardo1744 also we aren’t using cotton or like a casual tee either since this is the idea of outfit elevation my sister and I chose silk and my mom did a thin stretchy long sleeve with a shimmery thread through it in that rose gold color but the shirt is light mauve I think, so also that could be it too bc a off white plain casual t shirt could be bringing the look down rather than taking it up a level?

For those who are critiquing Zyla's method for lack of inclusivity, I found it helpful to think of colors this way (I have dark brown hair and eyes and medium olive skin): Brown is not really a 'pure' color, it is a blend of pigments that is usually based around red or yellow. So a cool brown might be red + blue = purple, or yellow + blue = green. A warmer brown could be red, orange, or yellow. It's up to you to determine the amount of red, yellow, and blue pigments that make up your coloring's "brown" and then translate those into colors that flatter you. And as others have said, also check out what colors are reflected from your features! With neutral-cool undertones, I found that my energy color is a deep olive, that my 2nd base can range from eggplant to maroon, and that my 3rd base can be either wheat or silver. All by looking deeper than a simple "brown"!
Did anyone else think, "Wow, that's a lot of brown." As a brown girl with brown hair and brown eyes, I feel like this would end up so monotone on me. Or on most non-white people, really.
So I went on a bit of a zyler deep dive he has his own YT channel. He has a series of videos where he breaks down how he finds the colors and he always shows an examaple on both a light and dark skinned person (note these are segements in the begining of each video). He describes brown as a combination of many colors so often times the lighter colors in your hair and eyes will be greens blues, purples, and reds.
I really liked this video and found it very easy to understand! The author of the book does sound like he genuinely has a passion for colors as he suggested color examples in a way I had not thought or heard of. I will say this, though: it is very lacking for people with darker skin. I tried to follow and pick my colors using his method, as you said, and I got various shades of brown, one shade of a dusty berry red, and like 1-2 shades of black. Which honestly is so limiting when there is a whole range of colors! Honestly, it made it harder to find my colors than the color season method did. It was definitely a unique and interesting perspective, but I'm afraid it was not really helpful if you have darker skin.
Does your hair have different tones in the sun? Like more of a natural chestnut or reddish tone in the sun? Because my hair is super dark/almost black but I have rich chestnut and red highlights in direct sun. But the lack of clarification for darker skin tones is an issue.
It's only because you just see "black and brown" that you think it's limited. But this system isn't that literalistic. He pulls out the colours that make up the brown or black (both colours that are made up of other colours) and it works just as well on POC. Sometimes he chooses VERY surprising colours.
@TheKarebear666 My hair is like a Black/Brown color. It looks black when it is wet or freshly done, but it's really just a very, very dark brown. Surprisingly, my hair color doesn't change in the sun. I don't think it has even gotten sunbleached before either. My hair doesn't really help me out much as far as extra colors goes. 😄 I've even tried highlights before, but they make me either look old or odd.
Go and have a squiz a this channel - he types women of colour there and he never picks black and brown for anything that isn't 'your version of black / brown'.
i love the idea of having an essence colour being our version of white, but as a woc with a fair medium-olive skintone, the colour wouldn't be white at all. im wondering how it could be adapted for poc who have a deep-darker skintone 💛
But this is the point, its not literally a shade of white it’s what you would wear INSTEAD of white, so if you have a darker skin tone a dark colour that represents your skin tone would be a much better for you for scenarios where the standard is white!

I mean, even with her the white she is wearing looks more like the highlights of her skin than a color close to her skin. People with dark skin tones can get really bright white highlights. Maybe that would be a better way to think of a white for you? It doesn't make sense to me anyway that your version of white would be a nude color... So, your white is what white light looks like when it reflects off your skin, maybe. Not sure how I feel about this system in general though. For example, no one is going to have bright red fingertips, so no one can wear bright red?

Really nice video! Just a question: I understand the general consensus that the color seasons and this color theory can be applied to everyone, however I feel like the dimensionality of POCs aren’t really considered, it feels more like nowadays we’re trying to fit POCs into color and season theory. For example a lot of POCs will have dark hair, dark eyes, our veins are more greenish, etc. and we all become winter or autumns. It would be nice to see more content about color theory and such, but maybe focusing more on how to discern it for people of color, as there isn’t as much content on that.
Agreed! There isn’t enough content on how people of color could be more seasons in color theory instead of just autumn and winter. I’ve watched some tiktok videos on Korean color analysis and they show how someone with dark hair and eyes could be any of the seasons!
This is definitely an interesting concept and I’m going to explore my colors based on this system. However, my skin, hair, and eyes are all shades of dark brown and I prefer more color and variety in my wardrobe. I do think it would be good for finding my best neutrals though.
I thought about that as well. What about someone with honey colored skin, chestnut hair with medium brown eyes? I would love to see this system worked on many different people.
@belén 🦋 I don't really agree with this. The concept is very close to color theory. No matter how deep your coloring you can still be warm or cool, light or deep in comparison to people who share similar features. Warm and deeper types tend to look really calm in neutrals and sensual in warm bright reds whereas cool and pale people tend to look more roses as opposed to red. A deep brown can beautifully be combined with lighter nude colors and the vein color of a warm/dark skinned person is probably a deep green. Increase the brightness and you will look more playful as it contrasts your deep skin color. To me as a soft summer I have a lot of gray in my features. As soon as I add white or black I look edgy/contrasted. If I add blue I look grounded/calm/most like me and grey is my true neutral. This will be similar to a darker soft summer but they might look better in darker shades of the same color which might look a bit too harsh on me.

Maybe my favorite video you’ve ever done! Immediately after watching I used the Adobe Capture app to upload pics of myself and identify the hues in my coloring. Such a great way to bring your colors into areas other than fashion too.
I love most of this! Although I'm still waiting for a deep dive into colorseasons, because this didn't fully confirm my suspicion. As someone with dark brown hair naturally, finding my 3rd base color was a little tricky. My hair gets a little lighter with sun damage, so I decided to pick the color of my highlights, which is a warm brown that can look copper have reddisch hues... Especially with darker features, we tend to say "it's just brown, or black" but even brown hair or eyes have undertones. We really need to get rid of that mindset, that dark hair, brown eyes or skin are "boring"
Omg totally agree. I have dark brown hair, that can get kind of reddish auburn highlights if I’m in the sun a lot. But yes, dark brown gets written off ALL the time.

An interesting concept. I’m intrigued. The ideas gave me a happy sort of feeling in my body. I like the idea of taking colours from your own body and using them to communicate moods/energies. It’s what I like so much about Kibbe - my clothing is best when it’s in harmony with the lines of my body which in turn makes me feel more myself, more IN my body, and more confident and at peace. I don’t know if this will make sense, but just like a lot of older “style” systems basically try to make everyone into a sort of classic type regardless of wether they are or not, not working WITH your lines but rather trying to disguise them, something about the colour seasons has always felt a bit like that, a bit removed from the actual person. This feels to me like “if you want to know what colours suit you best, look at the colours on your own body and harmonize with them.”. Maybe it’s that it seems more intuitive and organic to me. Like, you’re already walking around, living and breathing in your own palette. Hunh. I’m gonna have to let that one marinate in my brain for a bit, but I like it 😊
Dark Autumn here! I have to say, the results chime pretty closely with where I sit in the 12-season system. (Essence color: cream. Romantic color: paprika red. Dramatic color: Peacock blue or kingfisher blue. Energy color: Black-brown. Tranquil color: Lichen green. First base: Fir green. Second base: Chocolate brown. Third base: Mahogany or copper.)
I LOVE this! I’ve been trying to figure out my color season for years, but I’m one of the hard to place olive-toned folks, and I’ve been noticing lately that honestly it seems like I’m a different season depending on witch hue I’m trying to find. I’m a HUGE color theory person (I literally wrote a thesis about in college, actually quite similar to this concept although I was applying it to painting rather than style), and I’ve just been thinking that I felt like the colors season concept a little bit missed the point because there are so many colors in each season that no one person ever looks their absolute BEST in every single one. And I really wanted to hone down my BEST colors, being a bit of a minimalist with regard to my wardrobe, it matters to me that every item I wear looks truly harmonious on me. I had already figured out on my own that it seemed like a dark aqua blue-green was really what looked the most dramatic/regal on me without me washing out and now I realize that it is the exact color of my veins, and that a vivid but darker berry-pink brought out all of the more “blushing” or “lip” tones on me, so it makes perfect sense that this would be the most intimate or sensual color on me. I just think this way of looking for your colors makes way more sense that the color season approach.
I had heaps of fun today at a local op shop (thrift shop) trying on colours I normally wouldn’t, after watching this video. Came home with everything from a slate blue top to a salmon pink cardigan, shades of grey and silver, a pumpkin gold top, chocolate brown and shades of green. I’m really excited to play around with them. Thank you!
I already wear a lot of dark colors which would go in line with this book since I have brown hair, dark brown eyes, and nearly black eyebrows. I do have light skin with pinky undertones. But to be honest, this system isn't one that I am too interested in. It seems like a lot of colors would be off-limits since they are not naturally occurring in the skin and eyes.
I just want to say, your eyes are like, SO PRETTY. It's mesmerizing too. There were times it seemed like your pupil disappeared, probably lighting, and when you blinked it came back, and in that moment, it just was a blue-green color😭❤️. It's so beautiful😭❤
Hi, I loved the theory… it seems much more easy to understand that the regular seasonal method. I think seasons are not covering WOC. Another thought, most WOC (especially darker) would have a very dark, almost monochrome palette?
Hi, I agree. For WOC, it would be mainly different versions of brown (and maybe black). As a WOC too, I think the essence/ base & romantic colors are OK but for the others, I'll stick to my seasonal palette since I don't want my colors to be just shades of brown.
If you go on his channel or Pinterest, you'll see he types WOC and this is never the case. That's the trickier part of Zyla - a lot of it is colour that harmonises with, say, your eyes, rather than their exact colour. He never gives black or brown as a colour for your energy or tranquil colours, for instance. Such a tricky system, but super worth it once you figure it out! It also helps to look at his archetype boards and try colours from there. I'd never have said, for instance, that my eyes had yellow in them, but corn yellow harmonises beautifully with my eyes, hence it's my tranquility colour. I figured this out by looking at his videos and Pinterest boards. He swatch thing was way too confusing 😂 Hope this helps!

I'm intrigued by this, but it's hard to look at myself and see my coloring. The veins are the hardest for me because they're purple and green. Update: Thank you again for this video! I examined my features more closely, even took pictures to help figure out some of my colors. I organized everything into a slideshow with swatches and pictures of the recommended objects you mentioned. I love the way it came out. What I'm seeing is that these new colors are more associated with Summer. In the 12 color season I settled in Deep Winter and some of the colors are shared by both seasons. What I love about David Zyla's system is that I can, and will, use these colors as my base and add other colors from the Summer and Winter palettes into it. As a Winter, you're told that we can only wear one shade of brown because they are usually very warm but Zyla's suggestion of looking at your eyes allows me to wear more of it. My eyes are reddish brown and I have nearly black, cool-toned brown hair with coppery red highlights as well as silver from my grays. This doesn't replace what I've been wearing but expands my color palette.
I love your channel and it has some helpful tip if you look for them. Though, most of it as a whole is only works for a white demographic. Try looking for some inspiration for videos from books that are written by poc.
I believe that you did this video with the best intention, and I am thankful that you explained that book, then I don't have to read it. I'm happy to learn more about other systems, but this one wasn't for me. I really rather to wear optical white than nude, like in my wedding. I'm kind of yellowy or orangy shade, I have a soft tan the whole year. I also feel better with bright black, bright red and electric blue. I feel that those are more my colours. And I don't find those colours in my features. And know thinking about the people of colour, I know this is not about race, but many of them will wear beautifully an optical white, sand or pearl, and wouldn't want to change them for brown or maybe wouldn't like to paint their room dark brown or whatever shade they are. Maybe I'm wrong, and some of them would love the idea. But it feels like that author wasn't thinking about a wider range of people.
Yeah, this author seems very unconcerned with deeper skinned people and, to a degree, brown-eyed brunettes generally. How many shades of brown can one tolerate? It sounds incredibly bland in execution.
Even for very pale people, my romantic color and my neutral color would be about the same. Going with skin tones simply won't look good on everyone or provide the versatility some people love. Bright, vibrant colors DO look great on a lot of people. This is definitely not for everyone.
@@kelliwalters1728 I really appreciate those in fashion and beauty who can serve the needs of clients of a range of shades, because they are truly experts. Some f&b folks may be popular on social media, but they are only experts in themselves (body shapes, face shapes, etc) and not much beyond that. When I heard an American YTer say she doesn't advise black eyeliner or mascara, I realized that she didn't consider people of color as her viewers and I unsubscribed. After all, most people in the USA and on Earth have dark eyelashes.
I don't think this theory is saying people of colour couldn't wear white. If white is in your colour season, then no matter what your skin tone is you can wear white very well. I think this theory is just for if you wanted to create different affects, like the one where u wear an almost nude colour will make u feel intimate etc. White won't do that. That doesn't mean u can't wear white, but it will have a different affect.

I think you’d look so beautiful in brown mascara! I learned in getting my color analysis done (true summer here!) that most people that aren’t winters should wear brown or navy mascara and it truly makes a difference!
I have a bit of a neutral skin tone, so I was never quite sure what my colour season would be. This was very easy to understand, and I have now been able to narrow it down to either Spring or Summer. Thank you very much. :)
I had to have a think about how this would apply to POCs and I think I understand it now. It's about colour theory from an artist's perspective. To paint, we need a red, blue, yellow, white, and maybe a black. These colours will allow you to mix everything required for your painting. But of course there are many different types of whites, reds, blues etc. So we need to think of ourselves as the subject of a painting, and find the correct primary colours that will allow us to accurately paint ourselves. We won't be able to easily identify our colours using the methods he outlined, but we can think of it as "what shade of red do I need to mix into my skin tone so that it gives the natural colour of when I blush?" "What colour do I need to add to my black hair so that it reflects the streaks of my hair reflecting the sunlight?"

I have brown eyes and brown hair. I like them that way, but I was a little bummed that according to this theory I have to wear... Brown. And brown. Maybe copper. I don't really like to dress in brown. I am soooo brown myself that I feel I'd be washed out in brown. 😢
I don't agree with this total Brown look result : i think we should not only see the color Brown but think the version of Brown in the palette of dark or black, in thé palette of green, on the palette of each color. More a question of sensation or sensitive thing than a rigide way of choice. (Sorry for my poor english )
I love this approach!! I've just ordered his book too, looking forward to going through it. Having gone through a Theatre Design course, this info should really have been in it! We had fashion history lectures, focusing on women's clothing (a lot of stuff I already knew), but barely any guidance as to how to style and design costumes that work with the actor(s).

Yeah,... I really like Ellie-Jean's content (this is not a complaint about her) but Zyla doesn't seem to work for me as a Dark Autumn latina either (or for the other WOC in the comments). And the suggestions were kinda too out there for my taste, too 'energy and vibes' for me, I think I will stick with the slightly more scientific 12 seasons system LOL

I think it's fun! My mom (God rest her soul) used to decorate our house in her warm Autumn colors, and it made the place feel like a personable home that reflected her so well. I could really feel a difference when I walked into anyone else's place. It just wasn't the same vibe. It's so wonderful the way everyone is unique and can express that in such an authentic way. Also, the colors need not all be shades of brown if you have brown hair and/or eyes. My hair is brown, but Zyla has incredible color vision and brings a theatrical flair to the palette. He saw overtones of a cool shale green in my hair and chose varying levels of that for my casual 2nd base, from an amazing "jack pine" deep bluish green color all the way down to a "morning rush" cool pale green. I love it! Some winters (with black hair) wind up getting a lovely eggplant color (with options of varying shades) as their second base neutral due to these subtle overtones that he can see and that also express (in an effortlessly authentic way) some aspect of the personality as well, usually. Not sure why that almost always works out that way, but the world is wide and fascinating!
My eyes are very dark brown, they have faded with age, when I was young they were so dark that you almost couldn't see the pupil.The same with my hair. Now my hair ranges from bright white to charcoal grey and my eyes are a deep cocoa brown. This sounds like an interesting book.
Love your channel, as a soft classic myself. Would you be open to make a video about what NOT to wear, as in you dress in outfits that are obviously and not so obviously not meant for soft classic and your skin tone? I think the contrast/dual screen shot would be immensely helpful as you are so great at explaining!
I knew it was just a matter of time before you came around to talk about the Zyla system 😆 I am glad you are talking about it! Most people don't know his system, but I personally find it one of the most accurate ways to determine your best colors, besides trying them on of course (one by one...)
If I had to guess, Zyla is probably the one who took it too literally. It feels like it was not the most inclusive of him to suggest you can find multiple tones in your hair or irises, or that you'd look good in colors that match your flushed skin if there isn't a difference in saturation, and that the colors will match up with what he identifies as your "true" white/black/brown/khaki, etc. Still this was fun~ because I am not White, I found the associations with the colors suggested rather funny. I found my essence color is probably sand or beige Romantic color is somewhere between coral and crimson. (It's hard to get the right saturations when our meat suits are all kinda translucent.) I have two dramatic colors because I have three colors that show up in my veins. These two were a similar level of "dark." I got olive green and like, a cobalt? (I find this funny because we're supposed to have our own shade of khaki down the line.) My energy color is umber (like a cool-neutral brown) My "tranquil" "spa" color is a honey or butterscotch color 😂😂😂 Gotta love how bright yellow is so peaceful~ My first base, or personal shade of "black," was navy blue 😂 while my second base, or personal brown, was like, an ash-brown or walnut. My third base, or personalized khaki was rust (I have like, 2 red hairs that grow on one side of my head 😂😂😂) I think it'll be fun and inspiring to play with these color palettes, especially in my makeup. But i don't think it's worth taking super seriously. What counts for your job or partner is your experience and character, not whether you're decorated in ways that are flattering 100% of the time.
This is fascinating, thank you for breaking it down so clearly! I just received one of your packages and I can tell that this will be really helpful for determining which colors within my color season are best suited to which pieces in my wardrobe.
I just did a little experiment. I zoomed in on a bunch of my photos and I did a screenshot on a bunch of really zoomed in parts of the photos so the whole screen was a sample of a colour(hair, eye, hand, lips, etc, you get the point.) than I ended up with a colour palette that turns out to be a beautiful warm full of rosy pink, peach, gold, and deep ocean blue. First of all it made me really appreciate my features and I think I’ll wear these colours a lot more. Also I’m definitely a soft spring and now I know why I look so washed out in cool tones like dusty pink makeup etc

Enjoyable! Your hair appears to be in the natural blonde shades. Something like Klorane chamomile cleanser or a more gentle dye like naturtint could replace the more direct bleaching process if that's what you are doing. Just sharing, if you are happy, there's no need to change and I'm not a licensed cosmetologist. Even natural recipes are effective. Your hair is beautiful and healthy, btw. I enjoyed watching this. I may be between spring and summer. Pastels or slightly deeper tones, variations of pink, lilac, creamy colors with a hint of pink work for me too, but I don't regularly prefer pink. I like black and white because it eliminates options and is suitable for most occasions, but it's nice to make changes sometimes as you stated. I avoid wearing a lot of red too. It was fun trying this activity!

I love this and I am excited for your next video. This did confirm summer for me! I got a little confused around the colors from the eyes. My eyes are light golden around the pupil and then a fairly solid grey color and then a dark almost black ring. I will have to listen to the video again to see if I can figure it out. It would be amazing to see a diagram with arrows pointing to an example eye. I am excited to play in my closet and look for these colors!

Y'all I'm a Brown girl too with stark black hair, chocolate brown skin and black iris. It's really not difficult to understand undertones. For the longest time, I've been wondering how I would look with dusty Rose colored hair. Found out , my natural hair colour suits me best but the dusty rose might actually be my ESSENCE colour since I feel so ...bright and lively with it. Matte Black colours accentuate my eyes and brown skin. Teal , blue and lavender colours makes my Veins look Alive. Although I have yellow undertones but Soft Spring colours look better.

Honestly all of these systems sound awfully complicated and not like something I would want to consciously think about every time I want to dress myself. But it's interesting to see how these experts think of color and what their theory around it is, in order to just gpick up some key criteria to choose colors for myself and perhaps develop a more intuitive approach. So rather than pick out and restrict myself to a few colors that are supposed to represent me, I think it's more interesting to understand how and why these experts choose these colors and what they convey and how to relate them to my own body.
Watching this while I am eating and I am going to rewatch this so I can try to figure things out. I have watching you video on Seasonal colors (and a few other youtube videos on the same topic) and I still am having issues for I am either a Summer or Spring. I just have a combo of both warm and cool tones. As a kid and even into my early teens, I was TOTALLY a Summer, but I've warmed up more eventually because my hair went from platinum blonde to either a honey blonde or just golden blonde (there are some browns in there now). I tan before I burn and my eyes are still grey-blue. In the past though, I've always look good in pastels, but I can wear a variety of colors, so that's why it's been hard to pinpoint specifics. One color I definitely did NOT look good in was a very dark green. I wore a dark green gown for my Senior Prom and while the gown shape looked great on me (I am very curvy), the color washed me out, I look stark white in my pictures. I went with my best friend who has similar coloring like me and she looks way better in her peach color gown. Still, I just view this stuff for fun. It's rare for me to buy new clothes anyway. I only buy it when I need it because I am very frugal with my money.
As a colour-consultant i'm always very interested in all these theories. I' m working with another system, where every type can me mixed with another, so for example spring-winter, summer autumn and so on. This is a good system for all kind of skin tones. I'm between yelloish and rose with a kind of olive undertone, and i'm summer-autumn. Also poc can find themselves in this sytem, because it's all about the reflection of a colour in your skin tone. The difficulty we have today about finding the right coloured clothes for us is, by the way, a result of a loss of thousands of dying-colours since the 60/70ties of the last century. We often only have the choise between pur tones, cold tones, pale or warm colours. But all the thousands of variations between them have been lost by saving money and making more profit. My way of solving this problem is to dye my clothes in my colours.
@pouchika: But yes, there is! Many people with this colour-combination are winter-types, but i tested also some Winter-summer -types and a Winter who needed softer colours because of her overall vibe. But possible is also: Winter-autumn and Winter- spring. It all depends on what's going on in your face with what type of colour underneath. I did not yet test poc, but they have such a great variation of scin- tones, that i'm absolutly shure, that they are not all winters! There is often a golden glow beneath the darker scin-tone, so that they even can be spring!
@kind_of_willow I'm actually an autumn. If you are interested in learning about poc in colour analysis, you should watch cocostyling yt channel. She goes through all the seasons with examples. Unfortunately, when it comes to dark skin and dark features, we always get put into winter, which I find weird considering there many people with yellow undertones as you said.
This was interesting for me as a color nerd in general, but ultimately I couldn't really conclude anything from this in regards to seasons as I'm a neutral, or rather a wild mix of cool and warm. Essence color: for this I picked ivory, a very warm off-white. It's what I'm drawn to instead of pure white and reminds me of the most yellow aspects of my skintone. Romantic color: this was an easy pick for me as it's my go-to shade for blush, lipstick, even eye shadows, which is a very neutral and hard to find antique pink. A lot of my skin actually has this color. This is what got interesting for me in regards to seasons. Although it's close to the shade "cool dusty rose" in the spring palette, it's not quite it. At first I wanted to pick wine red though, as it's the shade of red I wear the most, it's my all time favorite color, and it's what I feel is my true "romantic" color. It does feel like wine red is really just a darker and bolder version of antique pink, and I often wear them together, because it's such a luscious combination! Dramatic color: my veins are a cool greenish shade so I picked petrol green. I actually really like this color but I rarely use it because it's difficult to match. Energy color: my eyes are hazel with a mix of golden brown and bluish gray creating an illusion of warm, mossy green, so I chose olive green for this. This is where my color palette is getting messy for real lol. Olive green is clashing hard with petrol green. I look fine in both, just not at the same time. So even if my "romantic color" could be squeezed into a specific season, olive and petrol can absolutely not. Tranquil color: the brightest parts of my iris is some kinda pale, orangey yellow. It was hard to not just say "ivory" again, so I went with gold for this one. 1st base: the outer color of my iris is a very crisp, dark gray, so I went with charcoal gray, and I actually really like this color for formal wear. Another neutral color that shows up. 2nd base: my hair is a very ashy dark blonde that can look almost black in some of my body hair, so I chose a dark ashy gray-brown. Basically same color as you! I only really use this color for contouring in makeup. Whenever I wear brown in clothing I prefer warmer chocolate and leather browns, because they go better with my skin and eyes. 3rd base: I've always had a few sprinkles of very blonde, ashy, almost white in my hair, like this extreme platinum situation that I long thought was early graying, but it's not. So let's go with alabaster/chalk white for this one. My hair definitely throws off my color palette as it's so extremely cool in contrast with everything else that it makes me look very off. My skin being a mix of neutral pink and warm yellow, and my eyes being a mix of cool bluish gray and warm brown, they kinda go together much better, as the both have both warm and cool tones. So I tend to kinda lean in the warmer direction, especially because I think warm brown and blonde hair works much better with all the yellow in my skin and eyes. I also tend to come together better in deep, rich colors. I wear a lot of cool reds, burnt orange, mossy greens and emerald, deep black and ivory white, and all possible shades of blue. So for whatever it's worth if I had to put myself somewhere in the season mess, I'd say I'm a mix of autumn and winter. I take a lot of inspiration from especially those two seasons. But I think I'm too neutral to really be categorized any singular season.
I was trying on a jumper at a store, the ladies in the stalls next to me seen me step out and show my sister, and immediately they were like it's too close to your skin tone it washes you out. So in that case, teal was best. But the skin tone jumper may not have had enough of my tones in it; like yours, I feel like mine is dusty rose, and the first jumper was a warm beige.
I've never looked at my veins so closely, but I realized the blue-green sweatshirt I was wearing (that I always get told looks so good on me) is my dramatic color!
This is fascinating and feels intuitively sensible! I’m curious, does the natural colour of our lips correlate with any particular theme? I would think that would be a very prominent and telling feature, psychologically speaking!
Once again I’m right in between fall and winter - also this was kind of confusing as someone who has darker features. It felt like all my answers were some version of brown lol

I think a lot of people are taking this, too literally.
I’m a black woman and this is super easy to understand (maybe also because I’m an artist and I use color therapy to help with pstd and depression so I’ve delved into the complexities of color as well (shade, tone, depth) and this is so much more than what Ellie can explain in one video.
As a black woman who followed this method, I was able to find that I don’t need to literally take the shades of my skin or features (which will always give me the darker category because I am a woman of color) and transfer those exactly into colors.
For example in the video Ellie’s veins are not purple but her color is lavender because of the way it looks up against those feature or enhances them.
My eyes, hair, and skin are all browns.
My eyes however have the tiniest gold flecks when I stand in the sunlight which led me to pick golden champagne color that makes my skin also look naturally glowy.
My veins (the parts I can see) are like a dark forest green or sea green and so I picked a dark teal color to play off of that.
Nowhere am I literally gold, teal, and purple, but those are the colors I was able to see played the best off my features and give myself the option of using the gold in the place of a stark white if I want to spice the white up a bit.
What women of color need to look at are the undertones of a lot of things, because even though I’m dark, my undertones are yellow, and so, as long as I have some thing with a yellow or warm undertone, typically I’m in a safe area with colors and my mom has yellow in her undertones too and she wears the last to darkest shade of Fenty if that helps anyone too, but her version of white is rose gold since it plays off her skins natural tone and highlights. @@palomapardo1744 what me and my mom and sis have always done is press a finger against our palm or wrist and it happens super quick but it’s the color your skin is when you let go - but before it turns red from the blood flow returning to the area. Mine is like a pale yellow almost butter or white wine color so that’s why I chose the shade of champagne I did, my moms skin turned a pale berry or coral color so she picked rose gold! My litter sister is a bit more of light olive tone and she picked like a dark pearl shade like Ellie but the sheen still gives it a champagne look like mine - I hope that helps!

Finally someone covering Zyla. He is so hard for me to understand but I feel like there is gold there.
For those who are critiquing Zyla's method for lack of inclusivity, I found it helpful to think of colors this way (I have dark brown hair and eyes and medium olive skin):
Brown is not really a 'pure' color, it is a blend of pigments that is usually based around red or yellow. So a cool brown might be red + blue = purple, or yellow + blue = green. A warmer brown could be red, orange, or yellow. It's up to you to determine the amount of red, yellow, and blue pigments that make up your coloring's "brown" and then translate those into colors that flatter you. And as others have said, also check out what colors are reflected from your features!
With neutral-cool undertones, I found that my energy color is a deep olive, that my 2nd base can range from eggplant to maroon, and that my 3rd base can be either wheat or silver. All by looking deeper than a simple "brown"!

So I went on a bit of a zyler deep dive he has his own YT channel. He has a series of videos where he breaks down how he finds the colors and he always shows an examaple on both a light and dark skinned person (note these are segements in the begining of each video). He describes brown as a combination of many colors so often times the lighter colors in your hair and eyes will be greens blues, purples, and reds.

I did at first, and then I learned I was doing it wrong. Knowing my color season actually helped me figure out.
I really liked this video and found it very easy to understand! The author of the book does sound like he genuinely has a passion for colors as he suggested color examples in a way I had not thought or heard of. I will say this, though: it is very lacking for people with darker skin. I tried to follow and pick my colors using his method, as you said, and I got various shades of brown, one shade of a dusty berry red, and like 1-2 shades of black. Which honestly is so limiting when there is a whole range of colors! Honestly, it made it harder to find my colors than the color season method did. It was definitely a unique and interesting perspective, but I'm afraid it was not really helpful if you have darker skin.
Does your hair have different tones in the sun? Like more of a natural chestnut or reddish tone in the sun? Because my hair is super dark/almost black but I have rich chestnut and red highlights in direct sun. But the lack of clarification for darker skin tones is an issue.
It's only because you just see "black and brown" that you think it's limited. But this system isn't that literalistic. He pulls out the colours that make up the brown or black (both colours that are made up of other colours) and it works just as well on POC. Sometimes he chooses VERY surprising colours.
@TheKarebear666 My hair is like a Black/Brown color. It looks black when it is wet or freshly done, but it's really just a very, very dark brown. Surprisingly, my hair color doesn't change in the sun. I don't think it has even gotten sunbleached before either. My hair doesn't really help me out much as far as extra colors goes. 😄 I've even tried highlights before, but they make me either look old or odd.
Go and have a squiz a this channel - he types women of colour there and he never picks black and brown for anything that isn't 'your version of black / brown'.

i love the idea of having an essence colour being our version of white, but as a woc with a fair medium-olive skintone, the colour wouldn't be white at all. im wondering how it could be adapted for poc who have a deep-darker skintone 💛
But this is the point, its not literally a shade of white it’s what you would wear INSTEAD of white, so if you have a darker skin tone a dark colour that represents your skin tone would be a much better for you for scenarios where the standard is white!

I mean, even with her the white she is wearing looks more like the highlights of her skin than a color close to her skin. People with dark skin tones can get really bright white highlights. Maybe that would be a better way to think of a white for you? It doesn't make sense to me anyway that your version of white would be a nude color...
So, your white is what white light looks like when it reflects off your skin, maybe. Not sure how I feel about this system in general though. For example, no one is going to have bright red fingertips, so no one can wear bright red?

Really nice video! Just a question: I understand the general consensus that the color seasons and this color theory can be applied to everyone, however I feel like the dimensionality of POCs aren’t really considered, it feels more like nowadays we’re trying to fit POCs into color and season theory. For example a lot of POCs will have dark hair, dark eyes, our veins are more greenish, etc. and we all become winter or autumns. It would be nice to see more content about color theory and such, but maybe focusing more on how to discern it for people of color, as there isn’t as much content on that.
I suggest the Merriam Style channel for a better approach to color analysis, and it is even simpler than the 12 color seasons!

Agreed! There isn’t enough content on how people of color could be more seasons in color theory instead of just autumn and winter. I’ve watched some tiktok videos on Korean color analysis and they show how someone with dark hair and eyes could be any of the seasons!

This is definitely an interesting concept and I’m going to explore my colors based on this system. However, my skin, hair, and eyes are all shades of dark brown and I prefer more color and variety in my wardrobe. I do think it would be good for finding my best neutrals though.
I thought about that as well. What about someone with honey colored skin, chestnut hair with medium brown eyes? I would love to see this system worked on many different people.
@belén 🦋 I don't really agree with this. The concept is very close to color theory. No matter how deep your coloring you can still be warm or cool, light or deep in comparison to people who share similar features. Warm and deeper types tend to look really calm in neutrals and sensual in warm bright reds whereas cool and pale people tend to look more roses as opposed to red. A deep brown can beautifully be combined with lighter nude colors and the vein color of a warm/dark skinned person is probably a deep green. Increase the brightness and you will look more playful as it contrasts your deep skin color. To me as a soft summer I have a lot of gray in my features. As soon as I add white or black I look edgy/contrasted. If I add blue I look grounded/calm/most like me and grey is my true neutral. This will be similar to a darker soft summer but they might look better in darker shades of the same color which might look a bit too harsh on me.

As someone with dark brown hair naturally, finding my 3rd base color was a little tricky. My hair gets a little lighter with sun damage, so I decided to pick the color of my highlights, which is a warm brown that can look copper have reddisch hues...
Especially with darker features, we tend to say "it's just brown, or black" but even brown hair or eyes have undertones.
We really need to get rid of that mindset, that dark hair, brown eyes or skin are "boring"

An interesting concept. I’m intrigued. The ideas gave me a happy sort of feeling in my body. I like the idea of taking colours from your own body and using them to communicate moods/energies. It’s what I like so much about Kibbe - my clothing is best when it’s in harmony with the lines of my body which in turn makes me feel more myself, more IN my body, and more confident and at peace. I don’t know if this will make sense, but just like a lot of older “style” systems basically try to make everyone into a sort of classic type regardless of wether they are or not, not working WITH your lines but rather trying to disguise them, something about the colour seasons has always felt a bit like that, a bit removed from the actual person. This feels to me like “if you want to know what colours suit you best, look at the colours on your own body and harmonize with them.”. Maybe it’s that it seems more intuitive and organic to me. Like, you’re already walking around, living and breathing in your own palette. Hunh. I’m gonna have to let that one marinate in my brain for a bit, but I like it 😊
Dark Autumn here! I have to say, the results chime pretty closely with where I sit in the 12-season system. (Essence color: cream. Romantic color: paprika red. Dramatic color: Peacock blue or kingfisher blue. Energy color: Black-brown. Tranquil color: Lichen green. First base: Fir green. Second base: Chocolate brown. Third base: Mahogany or copper.)

I’ve been trying to figure out my color season for years, but I’m one of the hard to place olive-toned folks, and I’ve been noticing lately that honestly it seems like I’m a different season depending on witch hue I’m trying to find.
I’m a HUGE color theory person (I literally wrote a thesis about in college, actually quite similar to this concept although I was applying it to painting rather than style), and I’ve just been thinking that I felt like the colors season concept a little bit missed the point because there are so many colors in each season that no one person ever looks their absolute BEST in every single one. And I really wanted to hone down my BEST colors, being a bit of a minimalist with regard to my wardrobe, it matters to me that every item I wear looks truly harmonious on me.
I had already figured out on my own that it seemed like a dark aqua blue-green was really what looked the most dramatic/regal on me without me washing out and now I realize that it is the exact color of my veins, and that a vivid but darker berry-pink brought out all of the more “blushing” or “lip” tones on me, so it makes perfect sense that this would be the most intimate or sensual color on me. I just think this way of looking for your colors makes way more sense that the color season approach.
I had heaps of fun today at a local op shop (thrift shop) trying on colours I normally wouldn’t, after watching this video. Came home with everything from a slate blue top to a salmon pink cardigan, shades of grey and silver, a pumpkin gold top, chocolate brown and shades of green. I’m really excited to play around with them. Thank you!

I already wear a lot of dark colors which would go in line with this book since I have brown hair, dark brown eyes, and nearly black eyebrows. I do have light skin with pinky undertones. But to be honest, this system isn't one that I am too interested in. It seems like a lot of colors would be off-limits since they are not naturally occurring in the skin and eyes.
I just want to say, your eyes are like, SO PRETTY. It's mesmerizing too. There were times it seemed like your pupil disappeared, probably lighting, and when you blinked it came back, and in that moment, it just was a blue-green color😭❤️. It's so beautiful😭❤

Hi, I agree. For WOC, it would be mainly different versions of brown (and maybe black). As a WOC too, I think the essence/ base & romantic colors are OK but for the others, I'll stick to my seasonal palette since I don't want my colors to be just shades of brown.
If you go on his channel or Pinterest, you'll see he types WOC and this is never the case. That's the trickier part of Zyla - a lot of it is colour that harmonises with, say, your eyes, rather than their exact colour. He never gives black or brown as a colour for your energy or tranquil colours, for instance. Such a tricky system, but super worth it once you figure it out! It also helps to look at his archetype boards and try colours from there. I'd never have said, for instance, that my eyes had yellow in them, but corn yellow harmonises beautifully with my eyes, hence it's my tranquility colour. I figured this out by looking at his videos and Pinterest boards. He swatch thing was way too confusing 😂 Hope this helps!

I'm intrigued by this, but it's hard to look at myself and see my coloring. The veins are the hardest for me because they're purple and green.
Update: Thank you again for this video! I examined my features more closely, even took pictures to help figure out some of my colors. I organized everything into a slideshow with swatches and pictures of the recommended objects you mentioned. I love the way it came out. What I'm seeing is that these new colors are more associated with Summer. In the 12 color season I settled in Deep Winter and some of the colors are shared by both seasons.
What I love about David Zyla's system is that I can, and will, use these colors as my base and add other colors from the Summer and Winter palettes into it.
As a Winter, you're told that we can only wear one shade of brown because they are usually very warm but Zyla's suggestion of looking at your eyes allows me to wear more of it. My eyes are reddish brown and I have nearly black, cool-toned brown hair with coppery red highlights as well as silver from my grays.
This doesn't replace what I've been wearing but expands my color palette.
You have to pick the darkest colour in your veins - there’s a lot of variation so picking the darkest shade is what he recommends!

I love your channel and it has some helpful tip if you look for them. Though, most of it as a whole is only works for a white demographic. Try looking for some inspiration for videos from books that are written by poc.
“Moonlight green” is the green-ish hue that white turns when in moonlight. Moonlight in general gives a green shift to the light.
I believe that you did this video with the best intention, and I am thankful that you explained that book, then I don't have to read it. I'm happy to learn more about other systems, but this one wasn't for me.
I really rather to wear optical white than nude, like in my wedding. I'm kind of yellowy or orangy shade, I have a soft tan the whole year. I also feel better with bright black, bright red and electric blue. I feel that those are more my colours. And I don't find those colours in my features.
And know thinking about the people of colour, I know this is not about race, but many of them will wear beautifully an optical white, sand or pearl, and wouldn't want to change them for brown or maybe wouldn't like to paint their room dark brown or whatever shade they are. Maybe I'm wrong, and some of them would love the idea. But it feels like that author wasn't thinking about a wider range of people.
Yeah, this author seems very unconcerned with deeper skinned people and, to a degree, brown-eyed brunettes generally. How many shades of brown can one tolerate? It sounds incredibly bland in execution.
I completely agree.
Even for very pale people, my romantic color and my neutral color would be about the same. Going with skin tones simply won't look good on everyone or provide the versatility some people love. Bright, vibrant colors DO look great on a lot of people. This is definitely not for everyone.
@@kelliwalters1728 I really appreciate those in fashion and beauty who can serve the needs of clients of a range of shades, because they are truly experts. Some f&b folks may be popular on social media, but they are only experts in themselves (body shapes, face shapes, etc) and not much beyond that. When I heard an American YTer say she doesn't advise black eyeliner or mascara, I realized that she didn't consider people of color as her viewers and I unsubscribed. After all, most people in the USA and on Earth have dark eyelashes.
I don't think this theory is saying people of colour couldn't wear white. If white is in your colour season, then no matter what your skin tone is you can wear white very well. I think this theory is just for if you wanted to create different affects, like the one where u wear an almost nude colour will make u feel intimate etc. White won't do that. That doesn't mean u can't wear white, but it will have a different affect.

I think you’d look so beautiful in brown mascara! I learned in getting my color analysis done (true summer here!) that most people that aren’t winters should wear brown or navy mascara and it truly makes a difference!

I had to have a think about how this would apply to POCs and I think I understand it now. It's about colour theory from an artist's perspective. To paint, we need a red, blue, yellow, white, and maybe a black. These colours will allow you to mix everything required for your painting. But of course there are many different types of whites, reds, blues etc. So we need to think of ourselves as the subject of a painting, and find the correct primary colours that will allow us to accurately paint ourselves. We won't be able to easily identify our colours using the methods he outlined, but we can think of it as "what shade of red do I need to mix into my skin tone so that it gives the natural colour of when I blush?" "What colour do I need to add to my black hair so that it reflects the streaks of my hair reflecting the sunlight?"

I have brown eyes and brown hair. I like them that way, but I was a little bummed that according to this theory I have to wear... Brown. And brown. Maybe copper. I don't really like to dress in brown. I am soooo brown myself that I feel I'd be washed out in brown. 😢
I don't agree with this total Brown look result : i think we should not only see the color Brown but think the version of Brown in the palette of dark or black, in thé palette of green, on the palette of each color. More a question of sensation or sensitive thing than a rigide way of choice. (Sorry for my poor english )

Having gone through a Theatre Design course, this info should really have been in it! We had fashion history lectures, focusing on women's clothing (a lot of stuff I already knew), but barely any guidance as to how to style and design costumes that work with the actor(s).

And the suggestions were kinda too out there for my taste, too 'energy and vibes' for me, I think I will stick with the slightly more scientific 12 seasons system LOL

I think it's fun! My mom (God rest her soul) used to decorate our house in her warm Autumn colors, and it made the place feel like a personable home that reflected her so well. I could really feel a difference when I walked into anyone else's place. It just wasn't the same vibe. It's so wonderful the way everyone is unique and can express that in such an authentic way. Also, the colors need not all be shades of brown if you have brown hair and/or eyes. My hair is brown, but Zyla has incredible color vision and brings a theatrical flair to the palette. He saw overtones of a cool shale green in my hair and chose varying levels of that for my casual 2nd base, from an amazing "jack pine" deep bluish green color all the way down to a "morning rush" cool pale green. I love it! Some winters (with black hair) wind up getting a lovely eggplant color (with options of varying shades) as their second base neutral due to these subtle overtones that he can see and that also express (in an effortlessly authentic way) some aspect of the personality as well, usually. Not sure why that almost always works out that way, but the world is wide and fascinating!

My eyes are very dark brown, they have faded with age, when I was young they were so dark that you almost couldn't see the pupil.The same with my hair. Now my hair ranges from bright white to charcoal grey and my eyes are a deep cocoa brown.

If I had to guess, Zyla is probably the one who took it too literally. It feels like it was not the most inclusive of him to suggest you can find multiple tones in your hair or irises, or that you'd look good in colors that match your flushed skin if there isn't a difference in saturation, and that the colors will match up with what he identifies as your "true" white/black/brown/khaki, etc.
Still this was fun~ because I am not White, I found the associations with the colors suggested rather funny.
I found my essence color is probably sand or beige
Romantic color is somewhere between coral and crimson. (It's hard to get the right saturations when our meat suits are all kinda translucent.)
I have two dramatic colors because I have three colors that show up in my veins. These two were a similar level of "dark." I got olive green and like, a cobalt? (I find this funny because we're supposed to have our own shade of khaki down the line.)
My energy color is umber (like a cool-neutral brown)
My "tranquil" "spa" color is a honey or butterscotch color 😂😂😂 Gotta love how bright yellow is so peaceful~
My first base, or personal shade of "black," was navy blue 😂 while my second base, or personal brown, was like, an ash-brown or walnut. My third base, or personalized khaki was rust (I have like, 2 red hairs that grow on one side of my head 😂😂😂)
I think it'll be fun and inspiring to play with these color palettes, especially in my makeup. But i don't think it's worth taking super seriously. What counts for your job or partner is your experience and character, not whether you're decorated in ways that are flattering 100% of the time.

This is fascinating, thank you for breaking it down so clearly! I just received one of your packages and I can tell that this will be really helpful for determining which colors within my color season are best suited to which pieces in my wardrobe.
I just did a little experiment. I zoomed in on a bunch of my photos and I did a screenshot on a bunch of really zoomed in parts of the photos so the whole screen was a sample of a colour(hair, eye, hand, lips, etc, you get the point.) than I ended up with a colour palette that turns out to be a beautiful warm full of rosy pink, peach, gold, and deep ocean blue. First of all it made me really appreciate my features and I think I’ll wear these colours a lot more. Also I’m definitely a soft spring and now I know why I look so washed out in cool tones like dusty pink makeup etc

Enjoyable! Your hair appears to be in the natural blonde shades. Something like Klorane chamomile cleanser or a more gentle dye like naturtint could replace the more direct bleaching process if that's what you are doing. Just sharing, if you are happy, there's no need to change and I'm not a licensed cosmetologist. Even natural recipes are effective. Your hair is beautiful and healthy, btw. I enjoyed watching this. I may be between spring and summer. Pastels or slightly deeper tones, variations of pink, lilac, creamy colors with a hint of pink work for me too, but I don't regularly prefer pink. I like black and white because it eliminates options and is suitable for most occasions, but it's nice to make changes sometimes as you stated. I avoid wearing a lot of red too. It was fun trying this activity!
Also for essence Also thinking bed frame too! And a swim suit cover for relaxing at the beach! Or essence color for a solo hike or hanging out at the beach or general time alone in nature :):)
I love this and I am excited for your next video. This did confirm summer for me! I got a little confused around the colors from the eyes. My eyes are light golden around the pupil and then a fairly solid grey color and then a dark almost black ring. I will have to listen to the video again to see if I can figure it out. It would be amazing to see a diagram with arrows pointing to an example eye. I am excited to play in my closet and look for these colors!

Y'all I'm a Brown girl too with stark black hair, chocolate brown skin and black iris. It's really not difficult to understand undertones.
For the longest time, I've been wondering how I would look with dusty Rose colored hair. Found out , my natural hair colour suits me best but the dusty rose might actually be my ESSENCE colour since I feel so ...bright and lively with it.
Matte Black colours accentuate my eyes and brown skin.
Teal , blue and lavender colours makes my Veins look Alive.
Although I have yellow undertones but Soft Spring colours look better.

Honestly all of these systems sound awfully complicated and not like something I would want to consciously think about every time I want to dress myself. But it's interesting to see how these experts think of color and what their theory around it is, in order to just gpick up some key criteria to choose colors for myself and perhaps develop a more intuitive approach. So rather than pick out and restrict myself to a few colors that are supposed to represent me, I think it's more interesting to understand how and why these experts choose these colors and what they convey and how to relate them to my own body.

Watching this while I am eating and I am going to rewatch this so I can try to figure things out. I have watching you video on Seasonal colors (and a few other youtube videos on the same topic) and I still am having issues for I am either a Summer or Spring. I just have a combo of both warm and cool tones. As a kid and even into my early teens, I was TOTALLY a Summer, but I've warmed up more eventually because my hair went from platinum blonde to either a honey blonde or just golden blonde (there are some browns in there now). I tan before I burn and my eyes are still grey-blue. In the past though, I've always look good in pastels, but I can wear a variety of colors, so that's why it's been hard to pinpoint specifics. One color I definitely did NOT look good in was a very dark green. I wore a dark green gown for my Senior Prom and while the gown shape looked great on me (I am very curvy), the color washed me out, I look stark white in my pictures. I went with my best friend who has similar coloring like me and she looks way better in her peach color gown. Still, I just view this stuff for fun. It's rare for me to buy new clothes anyway. I only buy it when I need it because I am very frugal with my money.

As a colour-consultant i'm always very interested in all these theories. I' m working with another system, where every type can me mixed with another, so for example spring-winter, summer autumn and so on. This is a good system for all kind of skin tones. I'm between yelloish and rose with a kind of olive undertone, and i'm summer-autumn. Also poc can find themselves in this sytem, because it's all about the reflection of a colour in your skin tone. The difficulty we have today about finding the right coloured clothes for us is, by the way, a result of a loss of thousands of dying-colours since the 60/70ties of the last century. We often only have the choise between pur tones, cold tones, pale or warm colours. But all the thousands of variations between them have been lost by saving money and making more profit. My way of solving this problem is to dye my clothes in my colours.
I mean, if you are dark with dark hair and dark eyes, there isn't much variety for you to choose from.
@pouchika: But yes, there is! Many people with this colour-combination are winter-types, but i tested also some Winter-summer -types and a Winter who needed softer colours because of her overall vibe. But possible is also: Winter-autumn and Winter- spring. It all depends on what's going on in your face with what type of colour underneath. I did not yet test poc, but they have such a great variation of scin- tones, that i'm absolutly shure, that they are not all winters! There is often a golden glow beneath the darker scin-tone, so that they even can be spring!

Unfortunately, when it comes to dark skin and dark features, we always get put into winter, which I find weird considering there many people with yellow undertones as you said.

This was interesting for me as a color nerd in general, but ultimately I couldn't really conclude anything from this in regards to seasons as I'm a neutral, or rather a wild mix of cool and warm.
Essence color: for this I picked ivory, a very warm off-white. It's what I'm drawn to instead of pure white and reminds me of the most yellow aspects of my skintone.
Romantic color: this was an easy pick for me as it's my go-to shade for blush, lipstick, even eye shadows, which is a very neutral and hard to find antique pink. A lot of my skin actually has this color. This is what got interesting for me in regards to seasons. Although it's close to the shade "cool dusty rose" in the spring palette, it's not quite it. At first I wanted to pick wine red though, as it's the shade of red I wear the most, it's my all time favorite color, and it's what I feel is my true "romantic" color. It does feel like wine red is really just a darker and bolder version of antique pink, and I often wear them together, because it's such a luscious combination!
Dramatic color: my veins are a cool greenish shade so I picked petrol green. I actually really like this color but I rarely use it because it's difficult to match.
Energy color: my eyes are hazel with a mix of golden brown and bluish gray creating an illusion of warm, mossy green, so I chose olive green for this. This is where my color palette is getting messy for real lol. Olive green is clashing hard with petrol green. I look fine in both, just not at the same time. So even if my "romantic color" could be squeezed into a specific season, olive and petrol can absolutely not.
Tranquil color: the brightest parts of my iris is some kinda pale, orangey yellow. It was hard to not just say "ivory" again, so I went with gold for this one.
1st base: the outer color of my iris is a very crisp, dark gray, so I went with charcoal gray, and I actually really like this color for formal wear. Another neutral color that shows up.
2nd base: my hair is a very ashy dark blonde that can look almost black in some of my body hair, so I chose a dark ashy gray-brown. Basically same color as you! I only really use this color for contouring in makeup. Whenever I wear brown in clothing I prefer warmer chocolate and leather browns, because they go better with my skin and eyes.
3rd base: I've always had a few sprinkles of very blonde, ashy, almost white in my hair, like this extreme platinum situation that I long thought was early graying, but it's not. So let's go with alabaster/chalk white for this one.
My hair definitely throws off my color palette as it's so extremely cool in contrast with everything else that it makes me look very off. My skin being a mix of neutral pink and warm yellow, and my eyes being a mix of cool bluish gray and warm brown, they kinda go together much better, as the both have both warm and cool tones. So I tend to kinda lean in the warmer direction, especially because I think warm brown and blonde hair works much better with all the yellow in my skin and eyes. I also tend to come together better in deep, rich colors. I wear a lot of cool reds, burnt orange, mossy greens and emerald, deep black and ivory white, and all possible shades of blue. So for whatever it's worth if I had to put myself somewhere in the season mess, I'd say I'm a mix of autumn and winter. I take a lot of inspiration from especially those two seasons. But I think I'm too neutral to really be categorized any singular season.

I was trying on a jumper at a store, the ladies in the stalls next to me seen me step out and show my sister, and immediately they were like it's too close to your skin tone it washes you out. So in that case, teal was best. But the skin tone jumper may not have had enough of my tones in it; like yours, I feel like mine is dusty rose, and the first jumper was a warm beige.
